Yuri Landman (1973) is an experimental instrument builder and musician. After a career as a comic book artist as well as a musician in the bands Zoppo and Avec-A, Yuri
Landman began designing experimental musical instruments. Based on prepared guitar
techniques, he built his first instrument in 2001 to solve the inaccuracy of instant
preparations.
In 2006 he got in contact with Liars. Developed over six years of prototyping, he fully
realised the Moodswinger for them with commissions from numerous other musicians to
follow. Yuri has custom built derivatives for such musical luminaries as Sonic Youth, Half
Japanese, Enon, Lou Barlow, dEUS, The Dodos, Blood Red Shoes, Liars, HEALTH, Liam
Finn, The Luyas, The Veils, Melt-Banana, Micachu & The Shapes, The Go! Team, These
Are Powers, Kate Nash, Women, Action Beat, Rhys Chatham, Dustin Wong, Philippe
Petit and others.
Around 2008 he started giving lectures and presentations with his instruments, leading to a request in 2009 for a practical building workshop. This became the rise of the
Home Swinger project. A Gesamtkunstwerk consisting of a DIY-workshop where people
build their own electric instrument and often followed by an afternoon rehearsal on
the second day and a 40 minute ensemble performance with multiple Home Swingers,
drums, basses, and guitars in the tradition of the Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca
compositions.
Soon after the rise of the Home Swinger project, other building workshops followed,
featured in this booklet. Events have taken place in AU, BE, DE, FR, UK, IR, NL, SV
and US.
The Moodswinger as well as the Home Swinger are included in the permanent collection
of the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, AZ.

The Parts
1 - HOME SWINGER
17 Mar ’12 Nantes FR
The Home Swinger is a simplified version of
the Moodswinger designed to be easy to assemble and play. It does not feature the slick
finished design of the Moodswinger, but is
exactly the same sounding instrument. Yuri
Landman presents a 4 hour long Do-It-Yourself
workshop whereby participants will leave with
a finished Home Swinger instrument as well
as a strong understanding of its structure and
workings. The difficult soldering part will be
taken care of by Yuri. Participants require no
special skills and the difficulty of the process
has been compared to building a piece of IKEA
furniture!
After Four Hours
In advance of the workshop Yuri will prepare
the component parts of the instrument for the
participant to use in construction. These include: 4 pieces of ready shaped wood in the
required sizes and predrilled with holes, easy
to employ machine heads for the strings, one
pickup (good quality, equal to Fender), an on/
off switch, a jack output, a few screws, bolts
and nuts and some metal for the bridges, as
well as two sets of strings.
The participants pay for their own materials.
Each workshop is limited to 16 persons.
Duration of the workshop is approximately four
hours.
Artists who own a Home Swinger are Micachu,
The Luyas, These Are Powers, David Holmes, Ice,
Sea, Dead People, The Go!-Team, Action Beat,
Jay Malhotra (Kate Nash), We vs. Death, Zoppo,
Thread Pulls, Signe Tollefsen, Susies Haarlok,
Kapitan Korsakov, At No Bikini Beach, Jad Fair,
DAAU, and Wu Fei.
4
The Moodswinger, a predecessor
The Moodswinger is an electric 12-string instrument
invented by Yuri Landman.
Developed over six years of prototyping, he fully realised the first Moodswinger in 2006 for the band
Liars.
The Moodswinger features a uniquely designed string
field that includes an extra movable rod (called a ‘3rd
bridge’), which divides the strings into two sections.
This string preparation creates mutually occurring
resonance in both sections of strings, resulting in a
sound more akin to a group of clocks and bells than
the common sound of a vibrating stringed instrument.
The unique timbre of the Moodswinger has often been
likened to Eastern instruments or Gamelan music.
In 2008 Landman developed the Moodswinger II for
Jessie Stein of the Luyas. The Luyas published their
second album Too Beautiful To Work on Dead Oceans
in Februari 2011 with four tracks played on the Moodswinger.

2 - QUICKSTEP KALIMBA 2.0
The Quickstep Kalimba Workshop features an electric version of an African instrument
called Kalimba. This electric variant is handy to plug in any amp and to use at live performances. The tuning is adapted to the 12 tone common in Western music, but can be
adapted to the traditional tunings as well if desired.
Initially the Quickstep only had the 12 rods, in the up dated 2.0 version these rods have
enlarged tailes that also can be plucked near the bridge and cause sounds remniscent
of church bells.
The Quickstep Kalimba is based on the electric kalimbas built by Konono No.1 from
Democratic Republic of the Congo and the kalimbas of the band Neptune from Boston.
The participants pay for their own materials. Each workshop is limited to 16 persons.
Duration of the workshop is approximately four hours.
Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo owns a copy of the Quickstep 2.0.

3 - CATERPILLAR DRUM GUITAR
/ SLIDE GUITAR
The Caterpillar is an instrument which can be used as a noise drum guitar in the tradition
of Glenn Branca’s ‘Mallet Guitars’ as well as a convenient bowed instrument or a more
traditional slide guitar commonly used in country music.
With two drum sticks you can easily develop a percussive sliding technique with one
stick functioning as a slide to select a pitch and with the other stick you hit the sliding
stick. The instrument also functions well with drum techniques such as double strokes
and bouncing.
The instrument features two pickups. It can be used as a stereo instrument and creates a
beautiful audio spectrum at recording sessions when two amps are being used. A switch
can change the stereo signal in a mono set up which is easier for live situations.
Three musical scales are drawn on the instrument that all together clarify the played
tones and the harmonic positions. The color dotted series are equal to the system used
on the Home Swinger. Two small movable bridges allow the player to select four fundamental tones.
Women
Melt-Banana
The participants pay for their own materials. Each workshop is limited to 16 persons.
Duration of the workshop is approximately four hours.
HEALTH
Melt-Banana, HEALTH, Women, Garçon Taupe, Philippe Petit (3) and Ice, Sea, Dead People
own copies of the Caterpillar Drum Guitar. The instrument is featured in Women’s final
Pitchfork.tv special, filmed just before they broke up.
The Caterpillar Drum Guitar
8
Note: The bridge system on this pic is slightly different.
On the currect one, the strings can be reconfigured to a country slide guitar set up with equal spaces inbetween the strings.
9
4 - WHITE EAGLE TAILED BRIDGE GUITAR
The White Eagle is a tailed bridge guitar, which means there’s an additional amplified
string field in the tail behind the bridge of the guitar.
The instrument has two pickups. It can be used as a regular electric guitar when played
mono on the normal bridge pickup. Behind the bridge there is an additional pickup.
It’s a stereo instrument and creates a beautiful audio spectrum at recording sessions
when two amps are being used. A switch can change the stereo signal in a mono set up.
More practical for live situations, amplifying both sections.
The string length of the tail section has a 1:4 ratio to the open string on the guitar section, causing bright overtones two octaves higher than the open string. On harmonic fret
positions (5th, 7th, 12th, 19th, etc.) the tail area gives a beautiful humming harmonic
overtone. On lesser consonant positions such as the 6th fret for instance, the resonance
is more muted. With alternate tunings you can arrange desired harmonic resonances on
specific notes.
The participants pay for their own materials. Each workshop is limited to 16 persons.
Duration of the workshop is approximately four hours.
Dutch electro artist Rude 66 (Bunker Records), Sam Dook & Ian Parton (The Go-Team),
Rhys Chatham and the two guitar players of The Van Jets (Belgium) own copies of the White
Eagle Tailed Bridge Guitar.

The White Eagle tailed bridge
guitar is based on the Twister
guitar Landman developed for
Enon’s John Schmersal in 2009.

5 - EMPIRE STATE ROCKER
17 Dec ’11, 11.00-17.00, Rotterdam NL
The Empire State Rocker is Landmans most off sized workshop instrument so far. The
length of this instrument is approx. 2 meter (±78 inch).
The body features a very worked out overtone scale up to the 16th harmonic in the top
plate as well as a common Western scale on the big plate. Different from what the size
might suggest, the instrument is not a bass instrument. It is mostly played flat on a table
playing harmonics or with a slide playing it behind the slide, creating highly atmospheric
enhanced tones.
The picture features a twelve string version with four clusters of three strings that are
equally tuned.
6 - TRIOCHORD
18 Mar ’12, Nantes FR
The Triochord is an enhanced version of the monochord/Didley Bow. All strings are tuned
in unisono giving an excellent natural chorus effect. This instrument workshop is very
cheap compared to the other workshops and therefore highly suitable to organise at music
education centres and conservatories.

7 - CROSSLANDER (Work in progress)
The Crosslander is a work in progress. When this instrument is turning out well, it will
pro-bably become a workshop instrument.
The focus of research for this instrument is based on the crossed string guitars of the
experimental NYC band Zs. Crossing strings is a known extended technique upon experimental jazz guitarists, Zs developed this instant preparation a bit further by restringing
their guitars in three X shaped crossed string pairs.
The crossed strings on guitars give a weird unpredictable gong like sound. The Crosslander was Landmans first attempt to do some research on the tone structure of the X
shaped string pairs. When both strings are tuned identical the gong sound is absent and
the tone sounds rather normal, a bit hollow though. As soon as one string differs in pitch
from the other the timbre of the X pair generates the gong sound.
With a screwdriver sliding technique Landman discovered the timbre is actually more
remniscent to the sound of a ring modulator instead of a gong. Two input tones pitched
in 500 Hz and 400 Hz generate in a ring modulator a tone of 100 Hz (the difference
tone of 500-400) and 900 Hz (the sum tone of 500+400). The crossed string instrument
generates something like that too and tones can be accurately chosen by placing the
slide on specific locations along one of the strings. Both strings function equal to the ring
modulation effect. Landman is working out the tonal scale for this instrument to make it
more appropriate to play nice tunes on instead of random experiment.
The planned 2.0 version will be more close to a V shape instead of a X shape for constructional and functional reasons. On the X-Crosslander you can’t exceed the octave, on the
V-Crosslander you can even go up to the 3rd octave and a little further. The strings cross
at 1/9+1/9 instead of exactly in the middle.
For practical reasons the X-Crosslander can be folded to one economic sized bar that fits
in a regular guitar bag. The V-Crosslander will feature a similar practical construction.

8 - ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE
10 Dec ‘11, The Hague NL
The day after the workshops Yuri Landman will play his musical compositions with the
group of builders and create an ensemble performance. The participants play two musical
compositions, starting in a minimal structure one by one, with each introduction creating
more sonic complexity and volume, resulting in a “wall of sound” crescendo comparable
with the drone works of Sonic Youth or the symphonic guitar compositions of Rhys Chatham
and Glenn Branca. The festival is free to fill in the line up, but it’s a recommendation to
include some trained artists as the backing band (drums, bass, guitar) to make the music
more solid.
Landman is often accompanied by multi instrumentalist Arnold van de Velde, singer/guitar
player René van Lien, guitarist Cees van Appeldoorn, experimental builder Kas van Hoek,
bass player Cesar Eisma and other musical acquaintances.

9 - SCHOOL PROJECTS
Besides festivals, art spaces and venues, Landman also hosts practical workshop and
performance events at schools.
In the past Landman did school projects at several education institutes ranging from for
instance the Royal Academy of Music in London to Special Education for kids with emotional or behavioral disorder or physical disabilities.
INTRODUCTION TO MUSICAL THEORY
The Triochord and the Home Swinger feature fraction scales and can easily be used as
teaching instruments to clarify overtone theory and the relation between musical scales,
maths and physics.
PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE
Besides this theoretical part, the children/students learn how to construct electrical instruments. Often the kids can take the instruments home afterwards as a reward.
STAGE EXPERIENCE
A group performance in front of their friends and family. Landman has written an easy to
learn composition for this event.

10 - EXHIBITIONS & LECTURES
Exhibition
In addition to the workshop Landman provides a fourty minute
presentation of his range of custom instruments. These include
the Springtime stereo-guitar, the Bachelor QS, the Moonlander
and notably the Landmine - a 25 meter one string instrument generating a variety of sounds remniscent of Star Wars laser guns,
sonar beeps, lightning flashes, jet planes flying and earthquakes.
These instruments are included in the ensemble performance a
well.
Lecture
In addition to the exhibition Landman tells about the physical
background of the Moodswinger and its relation with the musical
theoretical ideas of Confusius, Pythagoras and Harry Partch and
the Harmony of Spheres concept, Cymatics, Fractal theory and
Lichtenberg figures.
Lectures took place in AU, BE, DK, ES, FR, UK, IR, NL, US at several
