as Next Bishop of
The North Georgia Conference
New Bishop of The North Georgia
Conference, Sue Haupert-Johnson,
was announced Thursday, July 14, by
t he Sout heast er n Jur i sdi cti on
Committee on Episcopacy at the 2016 Southeastern
Jurisdiction Conference meeting at Lake Junaluska, NC
on July 13-15.
Rev. Haupert-Johnson will be the first female bishop in
the North Georgia Conference. She was the fifth of
five new bishops elected by the 376 delegates, an equal
number of United Methodist clergy and laity, from the
nine states that form the Southeastern Jurisdiction (SEJ).
She was nominated by the Florida Conference. Rev.
Haupert-Johnson is District Superintendent of Florida’s
Gulf Central District; has served as pastor of churches
throughout Florida; and has had numerous leadership
roles in the Florida Conference.

She holds a law degree from the University of Florida,
was a litigator with a Tampa law firm before answering
the call to ministry and graduating summa cum laude
from Emory University’s Candler School of Theology.
She was ordained a deacon in 1996 and an elder in 1998.
Following the SEJ announcement of her assignment as
new Bishop of The North Georgia Conference, the North
Georgia delegation greeted Rev. Haupert-Johnson whom
they referred to as “Bishop Sue”, her husband Rev. Allen
Johnson and their daughter, Samantha, at a reception
immediately following the announcement. A
consecration service for the five new bishops was held
on Friday, July 15, at Lake Junaluska.


Her assignment as Bishop of The North Georgia
Conference is a four-year term and begins September 1,
2016. Bishop Mike Watson, currently Bishop of The
North Georgia Conference, retires September 1 and will
assume the role of Ecumenical Officer of the Council of
Bishops.
