Manakamana Temple, Popular Pilgrimage
Hari Panta
Pokhara: The Manakamana
Temple situated in the
Gorkha district of Nepal is
the sacred place of the
Hindu Goddess Bhagwati,
an incarnation of Parvati.
The name Manakamana
originates from two words,
"mana" meaning heart and
"kamana" meaning wish.
Venerated since the 17th
century, it is believed that
Goddess Manakamana
grants the wishes of all
those who make the
pilgrimage to her shrine to
worship her.
The Manakamana temple
lies 12 km south of the town
Gorkha. The temple is
located on a distinguished
ridge 1302 meters above
sea level and overlooks the
river valleys of Trisuli in the
south and Marsyangdi in the
west. The spectacular
views of the ManasluHimalchuli and Annapurna
ranges can be seen to the
north of the temple. The
temple is approximately a
104 km drive from
Kathmandu and can also

be reached via bus east
from Pokhara in around
three to four hours.
The legend of Manakamana
Goddess dates back to the
reign of the Gorkha king
Ram Shah during the 17th
century. It is said that his
queen possessed divine
powers, which only her
devotee Lakhan Thapa
knew about. One day, the
king witnessed his queen in
Goddess incarnation, and
Lakhan Thapa in the form
of a lion. Upon mentioning
the revelation to his queen,
a mysterious death befell
the king. As per the custom
of that time, the queen
committed sati (ritual
immolation) on her
husband's funeral pyre.
Before, her sati the queen
had assured Lakhan Thapa
that she would reappear in
the near future. Six months
later, a farmer while
ploughing his fields cleaved
a stone. From the stone he
saw a stream of blood and
milk flow. When Lakhan
heard an account of this
event, he immediately
started performing Hindu
tantric rituals at the site
where the stone had been
discovered thus ceasing
the flow of blood and milk.
The site became the
foundation of the present
shrine. According to
tradition, the priest at the
temple must be a
descendant of Lakhan
Thapa.
There is a tradition of
sacrificing animals at the
temple. Some pilgrims
sacrifice a goat or pigeon in
a pavilion behind the
temple. However, recently
the District Livestock
Service Office, Gorkha has
banned the sacrifice of birds
such as pigeons, roosters,
and ducks to name a few.
Senior livestock service
officer Chhetra Bahadur
K.C. said Hen sacrifice
would not be permitted until
further
notice.

Shri Ballav AstroNational Library in Nepal
'Shri means Prospering at all aspects. Ballav
indicates power & lord of the world. Astrology is
vedic Science which studies about the past & the
present also about the future of human beings living
& non-living objects existing in the world. Ved is
symbol of knowledge and library has had been
regarded as the ocean of knowledge. Library is the
eye of society & light of the nation. Library is, more
over, ocean of the world. Therefore there must be
one library at each village. Village being the
smallest unit of the government, every
developmental activity enhanced in village makes
the nation bold. There were 3,915 villages in Nepal.
But due to merging of villages into municipalities
there may now less than 35 hundred villages in
Nepal. After declaration of 72 municipalities,
government's attention would be towards
municipalities more than the villages. On the other
hand, capable educated community seems to be
moving towards the cities. Thus, old ladies & gents
& children have been the inhabitant of the village.
Every day over two thousand population is flowing
in foreign countries, nearly the same educated
community towards the capital of the district & the
kingdom. At the sametime old people are being left
at village houses. So, our goal is to serve the village
folk, old ladies & gents as well to the children by
establishing this library at pang which lies 6
kilometer from the capital city of district Parbat
Kusma. Our second plan to open this library at Pang
is due to the national wide popularity of this Pang in
the field of Astrology. This Pang has had been a
pilgrimage of Astrology where still hundred of
people come, meet the astrologers & after
consulting about the past, present & future back to
the respective houses. When the whole literacy rate
of the nation was not much than 40 present, people
of Pang Khurkot were aware of the education &
educated. Especially Pang village in the district
Parbat had over hundred years centre of
Astrological learning. Keeping in mind the glory of
the past, & the real contribution of the forefathers it
was necessary to revive the ancient high value of
this village. In the past two hundred years, this
village Pang has had been the producer of
Astrological men power in the world. Another
reason behind establishing this astrological library
is starting of the subject wise library in Nepal. At
schools, colleges, university library are furnishing
subject wise books & educational libraries but there
has had never been a single astrological library in
Nepal. However there are over 25 thousands
Astrologers, Lecturers professors as well over 500
Astro Programmers in radio & Televisions but there
has not been the subject wise library of astrology
so far. Our motto is to fulfill the astrological need of
today. We have our own land for establishing library
which has been made available by late Sri Ballav
Upadhyay Regmi. We need financial assistant to
build the library building. 'Room to Read' has in the
past few years being helping hand in establishing
library in Nepal. So, we expect the support of Room
to Read & well wishers of Astrology in and abroad.
Jupiter planet being exalted this year we have
decided this year to register & conduct the Sri Ballav
Astro National Library. In this occasion, we express
thanks to all of you readers & extend warm welcome
at our library Khurkot-4, Pang, Regmi chowk, district
Parbat, Nepal.

Actually Forbes is an American media
publishing company headed by former
Republican candidate Steve Forbes. It
claims of providing the world's affluent
business leaders with strategic insight and
information since 1917 AD. Its mission is
to deliver information on the people, ideas
and technologies changing the world.
In Sanskrit, the lord of wealth is called
Kuber, who is often depicted as a fat man,
adorned with jewels and carrying a moneypot or money-bag and a club. The scriptures
describe that Kuber once ruled in Lanka but
was overthrown by his demon step-brother
Ravan. Later he settled in the city of Alaka
in the Himalayas. Descriptions of the glory
and splendors of Kuber's city are found in
many scriptures. He is considered in Hindu,
Buddhist as well as Jain religions.
In the Vishnudarmottar Puran, Kuber is
described as the embodiment of both Artha
(wealth, prosperity, glory) and Arthashastras
(Economics). The Agni Puran states that
Kuber should be installed in temples as
seated on a goat and with a club in his hand.
Kuber also enjoys the titles "King of the
whole world", "King of Kings" and "Giver of
Wealth". In the Atharvaved, Kuber is the
chief of evil spirits and son of Vaishravan.
In Manusmriti, he becomes respectable as
Lokpal (world protector) and the patron of
merchants. In Mahabharat, Kuber is
described as the son of Prajapati Pulastya.
By this time, though still described as an
Asur (demon), Kuber is offered prayers at
the end of all ritual sacrifices.
Anyway, in oriental society Kuber is the
treasurer of the gods and overlord of the
semi divine Yakshas. He is worshipped with
Laxmi, the goddess of wealth during Tihar,
which is primarily dedicated to her. While
Kuber still enjoys prayers as the god of
wealth, his role is largely taken by the god
of wisdom, fortune and obstacle-removal,
Ganesh, with whom he is generally
associated.
Whether it is by the blessing of same Kuber
or else, William Henry "Bill" Gates, (born
October 28, 1955) is the richest person in
the present world. He is an American
business magnate, philanthropist, investor,
computer programmer, and inventor. Gates
# K. P. Parajuli
(Advocate)
is the former chief executive and chairman
of Microsoft, the world's largest personalcomputer software company, which he cofounded with Paul Allen.
Gates is one of the best-known
entrepreneurs of the personal computer
revolution. Gates has been criticized for his
business tactics, which have been
considered anti-competitive, an opinion
which has in some cases been upheld by
judicial courts. In the later stages of his
career, Gates has pursued a number of
philanthropic endeavors, donating large
amounts of money to various charitable
organizations and scientific research
programs through the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation, established in 2000. Gates
stepped down as chief executive officer of
Microsoft in January 2000. He remained as
chairman and created the position of chief
software architect for himself. In June 2006,
Gates announced that he would be
transitioning from full-time work at Microsoft
to part-time work, and full-time work at the
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. His last
full-time day at Microsoft was June 27, 2008.
Gates was born in Seattle, Washington, in
an upper-middle-class family to William H.
Gates, Sr. and Mary Maxwell Gates. His
father was a prominent lawyer, and his
mother served on the board of directors for
First Interstate Bank System and the United
Way. Gates' maternal grandfather was JW
Maxwell, a national bank president. At 13 he
enrolled in the Lakeside School, an
exclusive preparatory school. Gates took
an interest in programming the GE system
in BASIC, and was excused from math
classes to pursue his interest. He wrote his
first computer program on this machine: an
implementation of tic-tac-toe that allowed
users to play games against the computer.
Gates was fascinated by the machine and
how it would always execute software code
perfectly. Gates graduated from Lakeside
School in 1973.
He scored 1590 out of 1600 on the SAT and
enrolled at Harvard College in the autumn
of 1973. While at Harvard, he met Steve
Ballmer, who would later succeed Gates as
CEO of Microsoft. From Microsoft's
founding in 1975 until 2006, Gates had

Rahu : Effects And Remedies
Unlike other planets of the
solar system Rahu and
Ketu are not observable,
substantial heavenly
bodies, with shape or
mass content. Rightly
termed as shadowy
planets, their movement
is interrelated and as
parts of one body they are
at all times just opposite
to each other. Greater
significance has been
attached to the role of
Rahu in influencing
human affairs in various
dimensions, especially in
Kaliyug.
The author of Lal Kitab
describes Saturn as a
serpent and Rahu and
Ketu as its head and tail
respectively. As a node of
moon, Rahu shall not
provide adverse results
so long as 4th house or
moon is not afflicted. He
gives good results when
Mars occupies houses 3
and 12, or when Sun and
Mercury are in house 3,
or when he himself is
posited in 4th house.
Rahu further provides
good results if placed
together with Mercury or
expected by him.
Rahu offers highly
beneficial effects if placed
in houses earlier than
Saturn. But if it is
otherwise,
Saturn
becomes stronger and
Rahu acts as his agent.
Sun provides very good
results when Rahu is
expected by Saturn, but
Rahu gives the effects of
a debilitated planet when
Saturn is expected by
Rahu.
Rahu gets exalted in
houses 3 and 6, whereas
he gets debilitated in
houses 8, 9 and 11.12th
house is his 'own house'
and he proves highly
auspicious in houses 3,4
and 6. Saturn, Mercury
and Ketu are his friends,
whereas Sun, Mars and
Venus are his enemies.
Jupiter and Moon are
neutral to him.
If Sun and Venus are
placed together in a
horoscope, Rahu will
generally provide adverse
results. Similarly, Rahu
will provide bad results if
Saturn and Sun are also
combined in a horoscope.
Here Mars will also
become negative. If Ketu
is placed in houses
earlier than Rahu, Rahu
will provide adverse
results, whereas Ketu's
effect would be zeroed.
Rahu in 1st House
1st house is influenced by
Mars and Sun, which is
like a throne. The planet
in
1st
house
is
considered to be the king
of all planets.
The native will achieve a
position higher than
indicated
by
his
qualification and will
obtain good results from
government. Rahu in this
house would give the
result of exalted Sun, but
it will spoil the fruits of the
house in which Sun is
placed. If Mars, Saturn
and Ketu are weak only
then Rahu would give bad
results, otherwise it will
give good results in 1st
house. If Rahu is malefic
the native should never
take
any
electric
equipments or blue/black
clothes from his in-laws,
else his son could be
affected adversely. its
malefic result too could
last till the age of 42 years.
Remedies
1. Offer 400 gram lead in
running water.
2. Wear silver in the
neck.
3. Mix barley in milk in ratio
of 1:4 and offer in running
water.
4. Offer coconut in
running water.
Rahu in 2nd House
If Rahu is in benefic form
in 2nd house one gets
money, prestige and lives
like a king. He will have a
long life. 2nd house is
influenced by Jupiter and
Venus. If Jupiter is benefic
then the native will live the
early years of his life in
wealth and comfort. If
Rahu is malefic the native
will be poor and have a
bad family life, suffer from
intestinal disorders. The
native is killed by a
weapon and is unable to
save money. In the 10th,
21st to 42nd years of his
life, he looses wealth by
theft etc.
Remedies
1. Keep a solid silver ball
in the pocket.
2.
Wear
things
associated with Jupiter,
like gold, yellow cloth,
saffron etc.
3. Keep cordial relations
with ones mother.
4. After marriage do not
take
any
electric
equipment from in-laws.
Rahu in 3rd House
It is the 'real house' of
Rahu. Third house
belongs to Mercury and is
influenced by Mars. When
Rahu is benefic the native
will enjoy great wealth and
a long life. He will be
fearless and a loyal friend.
He would be a clairvoyant
for seeing future in his
dreams. He will never be
issueless. He will be
victorious over his
enemies; can never be a
debtor. He would leave
behind property. 22nd
year of his life would be
of progress. However if
Rahu is malefic in 3rd
house then his brothers
and relatives would waste
his money. His money
once borrowed would
never be returned. He
would have defective
speech and would be an
atheist. If Sun and
Mercury are also there (in
3rd house) with Rahu
then his sister would
become a widow in 22nd
or 32nd year of his life.
Remedies
1. Never keep ivory or
things of ivory in the
house.
Rahu in 4th House
This house belongs to
Moon, which is an enemy
of Rahu. When Rahu is
benefic in this house the
native would be intelligent,
wealthy and will spend
money on good things.
Going on pilgrimage
would be beneficial for
him. If Venus is also
benefic then after
marriage the native's inlaws could also become
rich and the native would
also benefit from them.
When Moon is exalted the
native would become
very rich and would
benefit from the works or
relatives associated with
Mercury. If Rahu is
malefic and the Moon is
also weak then the native
will suffer from poverty
and native's mother
would also suffer.
Collecting charcoal,
altering toilet, installing
oven in the ground and
alteration of the roof in the
house would be indicative
of malefic.
Remedies
1. Wear silver.
2. Offer 400 gram
coriander or almonds, or
both in flowing water.
Rahu in 5th House
5th house belongs to Sun,
which signifies male
offspring. If Rahu is
benefic native will be rich,
wise, enjoy good health.
He would enjoy good
income
and
good
progress. The native
would be a devout or
philosopher. If Rahu is
malefic it leads to
abortions. After the birth of
a son, wife's health will
suffer for twelve years. If
Jupiter is also in 5th
house father of native will
be in trouble.
Remedies
1. Keep an elephant
made of silver.
2. Abstain from wine, nonvegetarianism
and
adultery.
3. Remarry your wife.
Rahu in 6th House
(Exalted)
This house is influenced
by Mercury or Ketu. Here
Rahu is exalted and gives
very good results. The
native will be free of all
botherations or troubles.
The native will spend
money on clothes. The
native will be intelligent
and victorious. When
Rahu is malefic he will
harm his brothers or
friends. When mercury or
Mars is in 12th house
Rahu gives bad result.
The native suffers from
various ailments or loss
of wealth. Sneezing while
going to work would give
bad results.
Remedies
1. Keep a black dog.
2. Keep a lead nail in your
pocket.
3. Never harm ones
brothers/sisters.
Rahu in 7th House
Native will be rich, but wife
would suffer. He would be
victorious over his
enemies. If the marriage
takes place before twenty
one years, it would be
inauspicious. He would
have good relations with
the government. But if he
engages in business
connected with Rahu, like
electrical equipments,
then he will have losses.
Native would suffer from
head ache and if Mercury,
Venus or Ketu is in 11th
house, then sister, wife
or son would destroy the
native.
Remedies
1. Never marry before
21st year of age.
2. Offer six coconuts in river.
Rahu in 8th House
8th house is concerned
with Saturn and Mars. So
Rahu in this house gives
malefic effect. The native
would spend money
uselessly on court cases.
Family life would be
adversely affected. If
Mars is benefic and is
placed in 1st or 8th house
or Saturn (benefic) is
placed in 8th house, the
native will be very rich.
Remedies
1. Keep a square piece of
silver.
2. While sleeping Saunf
should be keept under the
pillow.
3.Do not work in electricity
or power department.
Rahu in 9th House
9th house is influenced by
Jupiter. If the native has
good relation with ones
brothers and sisters it is
fruitful; else it would
adversely affect the
native. If the native is not
religious minded then his
progeny would be
useless
for
him.
Professions influenced
by Saturn would be
profitable.
If Jupiter is in 5th or 11th
house then it is useless.

good or bad result of
Rahu would depend upon
Saturn's position. If Saturn

and rich and get respect
from all quarters. If Rahu
in 10th house is with
Moon it gives Raja Yoga.
The native is lucky for
ones father. If Rahu in
10th house is malefic then
it would adversely affect
ones mother or native's
health would also be bad.

11th house is influenced
by both Saturn and
Jupiter. Native could be
rich as long as his father
is alive. Alternatively,
establishing things of

According to a report
submitted
by
the
Department of Archaeology

wooden planks supporting
the temple are swarming
with termites. The improper
channeling of water has led
to the decay of the temple's

a research officer at DoA
asserted that the temple is
damaged beyond repair

In earlier times the only way
to reach the Manakamana
