HISTORY OF VALMEINIER
PRESENTATION
Nestled on the border between the Northern and
Southern Alps, not far from the Ecrins and Vanoise
national parks, Valmeinier is the Maurienne’s newest
resort. It includes a village resort at an altitude of
1,500 m, which has managed to retain its authentic character, and a high-altitude resort perched at
1,800 m, which is beautifully integrated into its surroundings and features understated architecture.
The resort is on a human scale and is bursting with
appeal thanks to its warm and simple hospitality
and its dramatic landscapes between the Aiguilles
d’Arves and the famous Mont Thabor, away from
the crowds and the hustle and bustle. This is a great
place to recharge one’s batteries. Valmeinier is popular not just because of its beautiful surroundings,
but also because of the multitude of holiday activities available to families.
HISTORY
Valmeinier is a contraction of the French “val-minier”
or “mining valley”, perhaps because of the presence
of silver-copper ore and lead, which was mined in
the 18th century using traditional methods. Another
reason could be the presence of veins of anthracite,
which was used mainly by families for domestic heating purposes.
Valmeinier is nestled in the Neuvache valley, whose
steep slopes required the soil to be retained by terraces, which are still visible in the winter: terraces
for the cultivation of cereal (primarily rye), but also
beans, turnips and, as of the 18th century, potatoes;
the valley features alluvial fans whose streams were
the birthplace of villages comprising stone and
wood houses, interlinked to leave more space for
farming, with pastures scattered between altitudes
of 1,300 and 1,800 m, and up to 2,500 m during the
summer grazing season. Thus, people led a tough
agro-pastoral lifestyle that changed little from the
12th century to the 20th century. Their existence
was governed by the seasons and regulated by religious practices, as illustrated by the crosses scattered around the area, the old chapels found in the
hamlets and the local church, which has been rebuilt
several times.
However, despite various epidemics (including the
plague in the 17th century), wars, the sacking of Valmeinier in 1793 during the French Revolution and
years of poor crops, the population continued to
increase, reaching its peak (850 inhabitants) in 1848.
But with industrialisation came decline. After following two simultaneous careers for a few years (in
the factories or mines in the winter, and in the fields
in the summer), the men became full-time factory
workers and left the mountains to live near their
place of work. Valmeinier gradually faded away. It
had just fifty or so permanent inhabitants in 1971 and
the last of its five schools closed down in 1972.
Then a new team came in to govern the district, and
it decided to develop tourism at Valmeinier 1500.
The Crêt du Quart facility became operational in the
winter of ‘73/’74. Equipment was then supplied by
the capital of the county (linking the two villages)
in 1984-85-86, together with two holiday centres, a
number of co-owned residential properties, trade
premises, a new school, a cable car to connect the
two sides of the valley and the Roy chairlift.
In 1986, the 3rd phase of Valmeinier’s tourist development project was launched, with the construction of the new road, the cable lifts and the first residential buildings at Valmeinier 1800 (Auberge Grand
Fourchon, Aquarius Club Med, Les Carrettes, etc.).
Valmeinier 1800 continued to grow and enhance its
residential capacity with Pierre & Vacances, Odalys
and Espace 2, among others, in surroundings blessed
with landscapes that ask only to be explored.

3 The
environment
Valmeinier is deeply concerned about ecology, which is why all the resort’s
socio-economic players have joined forces to set up projects geared
towards environmental preservation.

Landscape improvement
Ever mindful of improving the landscape and the
local architecture, the district of Valmeinier is gradually burying its power lines. This means that views
are being cleared and the building facades freed of
visual pollution, which enhances the resort in general.
The snow is produced naturally using additive-free
water. Thanks to the low winter temperatures, the
water droplets sprayed into the air turn into snow
flakes. When the snow melts, the artificial snow returns to its liquid state and flows into streams and
other natural water reserves.
