Derby Trailblazers v Reading Rockets
Good evening and welcome to Noel-Baker for
tonight’s home game against Reading Rockets. If it
feels like it’s been an age since we were last here for a
division one match, that’s because it has been age –
five weeks to be precise! Not surprisingly, an awful lot
has happened since then, so we’ll be rounding up all
the latest news in tonight’s programme.
On the court, last weekend was a disappointing one
for the club. A number of injuries led to back to back
defeats for the first time this season. The loss against
Kent was softened by news that title rivals Essex
Leopards had also lost, but makes tonight’s game
against Reading even more important, as it was the
Rockets who inflicted that defeat.
First and foremost, we would like to welcome our
friends from Reading to Noel-Baker for tonight’s
game. We’re always made to feel very welcome
whenever we visit Rivermede, so I hope you join us in
welcoming Gary Johnson, his players and coaching
staff and any travelling supporters who have made
the trip up from Berkshire.
Elsewhere, our defeat last Sunday ends our
involvement in the National Trophy and sets up an
intriguing final between two very physical sides
– Manchester Magic and Leicester Warriors. This
means we’ve now been able to rearrange our trip to
Westminster for Saturday February 21st.
Secondly, we must thank everyone who helped to
make the Clarence Wiggins Memorial event such a
huge success. Our colleagues at Noel-Baker school
did a great job in helping to put the event together, in
particular, Lee Jepson, whose IT team masterminded
the technology being the multi-media presentations.
I’m sure you’ll agree there were some particularly
moving speeches and to see over 1200 people packed
into the Sports Hall was a true demonstration of the
love everyone had for Clarence. We intend to make
sure his legacy will continue through the work of the
Trailblazers organisation.
Plans are continuing for a basketball related event
after the season is completed and we will keep you
posted with these and also the proposals to rename
the Sports Centre in memory of Clarence.

Derby Trailblazer - Mini’s
Training every Saturday morning 9:30 - 11:30
Clarence Wiggins Memorial Evening
It was standing room only at the memorial
service for Clarence Wiggins at Noel-Baker
School on Saturday night.
More than 1,200 people who knew
the charismatic American through
basketball or as a teacher at the
school came to celebrate his life in
the sports hall that will soon bear
his name as a lasting tribute.
This was a chance for the many
people whose lives he touched
since he arrived in the city to play
basketball in 1983 to pay tribute.
Noel-Baker head teacher Mal Kerr said
Clarence, who had worked at the school
as a PE teacher since 1991, was a “superb
teacher and a one-off”.
Derby suffer heart breaking league loss against Worthing

Worthing Thunder...................................... 95
Derby then brought Raheem May-Thompson off
the bench and his introduction gave the Blazers an
immediate lift. The explosive forward netted six straight
points, four of them preceded by offensive rebounds.
The 6-2 run prompted Worthing to call their first timeout of the game, after the Trailblazers had cut the gap
to 17-15.
An emotional night at Noel-Baker school finished with
a heart breaking two point defeat against Worthing
Thunder, when Dan Watts three-point attempt bounced
back off the rim just as the buzzer sounded.
Prior to the game, Derby had paid tribute to Coach
Clarence Wiggins with a perfectly observed minute’s
silence in memory of the man who had contributed
so much to basketball in the city and who had sadly
passed away in between Christmas and the New Year.
Before the crowd rose to stand in silence, the
Trailblazers Chairman Charlie Wright read an emotional
tribute to the man who had inspired so many people
during more than thirty years spent in the UK.
Then, during the twelfth minute of the match, the
game was paused to enable the crowd to stand again,
this time for a minute’s applause, the significance being
that Wiggins had spent much of playing career wearing
the number twelve vest.
Had Watts’ shot have dropped through the hoop, it
would have been a magical ending to an evening
which was already tinged with sadness, but it was not
to be. Coach Matt Shaw admitted Worthing had shot
the ball exceptionally well, but felt Derby should have
been sharper at the defensive end of the court:
“It was an exciting game which could have gone either
way with the lead switching frequently throughout.
Ultimately we just couldn’t get enough stops
defensively and I guess it’s always tough to win when
you give up that many points,” he said.
Worthing got off to a decent start, surging to a 9-1 lead
as Hank Rivers found his way to the hoop three times
and Milton Chavis struck from long range. Watts then
found Dorr open for a triple and after a drive to the
hoop from Brendan Okoronkwo, Watts netted a threepointer courtesy of a Chris Shalvoy assist.
8
Thunder scored the next six points, but the run was
ended as May-Thompson found John Stewart in the
corner from where he drained a three-pointer. Chavis
responded with an and-one basket for the visitors.
Derby then attempted the same play again, only this
time, Stewart’s shot rimmed out, meaning Worthing
were able to take a 26-18 lead into the first break.
The Trailblazers came out on fire in the second quarter.
Stewart scored twice, either side of a basket from Dorr,
with the pair responsible for providing each other with
the assists which made each other’s shots possible.
The last of those scores happened just into the twelfth
minute of the game, providing referee Roger Harrison
with the opportunity to suspend play. The crowd
were then invited to acknowledge Clarence Wiggins
contribution to basketball in the city with a minute’s
rapturous applause.
The moment seemed to provide a catalyst effect for
Derby, as the Trailblazers embarked on a 16-8 run,
which included a pair of three-pointers from Shalvoy,
five points from May-Thompson and a triple from
John Gould.
Worthing were also having success from downtown,
with Louis Allen striking three times and Josh Brown
adding another, but the Trailblazers ended the quarter
with another strong sequence. They outscored the
visitors 9-2 over the final two and a half minutes to lead
51-46 at the break.
Unfortunately, Derby were unable to take that
momentum into the third quarter and a fired up
Worthing side began the second half with a 13-3 run.
Although the Trailblazers rallied briefly towards the end
of the period, it was Worthing who took a 69-67 lead
into the final quarter, with Rivers scoring at will and
grabbing almost every rebound going.
The game was far from over though and Derby
began the fourth with nine unanswered points. A
three-pointer from Dorr was followed up by a pair of
free-throws for Stewart and back to back scores from
May-Thompson.
Twitter: @derbyblazers & Facebook: facebook.com/derbytrailblazersclub
At 76-69 down and only seven minutes remaining,
Worthing called time-out and responded with an 11-1
burst of their own. Midway through that run, Tomas
Seduikis was called firstly for an offensive foul and then
for a technical for his subsequent dissent, but Worthing
seemed unfazed.
While Shalvoy sank the resulting free-throw, a turnover
allowed Allen to chance to knock down his fifth
triple. Shalvoy was then stripped of the ball and Allen
punished him again, with yet another huge shot from
downtown, which opened up an 80-77 lead with 4’40”
on the clock.
A Derby time-out followed and when Dorr’s shot rimmed
out, Lee Goldsbrough was on hand for a tip-in which
provided hope, but after an exchange of baskets, Chavis
hit five straight points to put Worthing 90-86 ahead.
Dorr then cut the gap to four points before Rivers
sank one of two at the line, but the Trailblazers were
running out of time. They began a barrage of threepoint attempts. The first, from Shalvoy was no good,
but Watts converted one of two at the line after the
Trailblazers had bagged a crucial offensive rebound.
Rivers then scored to make it 93-87 with 34 seconds
left, before a three-point attempt from Dorr failed to
drop. It meant the Trailblazers were forced to foul and
they had three to give before Chavis was sent to the
line, where he converted two for an eight point lead
with just twenty seconds remaining.
Anyone who thought it was game over at that point
hadn’t bargained for Derby’s incredible resolve. Watts
hit a three-pointer and having forced a turnover,
Shalvoy added another.
With eight seconds left on the clock, Worthing immediately
called for time-out and the Trailblazers couldn’t believe
their luck when Thunder’s pressurised inbounds pass fell
straight into the hands of Watts for a vital steal.
Derby quickly worked the ball up court and as the seconds
ticked down, Worthing worked hard to prevent an inside
option. As it was, it fell to Watts to go for glory with a threepoint attempt that would have won the game.
It was one of those moments when everything went
into slow motion and both he and a packed Noel-Baker
Sports Hall were left devastated when the shot clanged
back off the metalwork. Head Coach Matt Shaw was
never-the-less philosophical in defeat:
“Being down by eight with twenty seconds left and still
having a shot to win it at the end shows the fight we
have in the team. I thought we battled all game, but
you have to give credit to Worthing because they shot
the ball very well,” he said.
Allen was probably the pick of the Thunder’s marksmen,
converting seven of 13 three-point attempts on his way
to twenty-three points, although Chavis perhaps had
the best all-round game with thirty points, six rebounds
and eleven assists.
Derby were led by May-Thompson, who produced a
double-double of 27 points and ten rebounds, while
Dorr added 23 points and Goldsbrough was impressive
on the boards, capturing fourteen rebounds, seven at
each end of the court.
Derby: May-Thompson 27, Dorr 23, Shalvoy 15,
Stewart 12, Watts 7, Gould 5, Goldsbrough 4,
Bowen 0, Denholm 0, King 0, Morrison 0.
Worthing: Chavis 30, Allen 23, Rivers 20, Baker 11,
Brown 5, Okoronko 4, Seduikis 2, Hind-Wills 0.

Trailblazers progress to
Trophy semi-finals with South Coast win

fitness, which was encouraging considering we had
five guys playing more than 30 minutes on the back of
yesterday’s game too.
“Either side of half time we really managed to limit their
scoring particularly well and that was the key part of
the game for us,” he said.
Worthing opened the game with a pair of threepointers from Milton Chavis and Louis Allen, but four
straight points from Raheem May-Thompson in the
form of a basket and a pair of free-throws quickly got
Derby back on track.
Derby Trailblazers gained a degree of revenge on
Sunday night as they put together an accomplished
performance on the south coast, which resulted in an
83-73 victory over Worthing Thunder in the quarterfinal of the Men’s Trophy. Derby will now travel to
Manchester Magic on Sunday 8th February in the semifinals of the competition.
Derby travelled to Worthing on Sunday with a make-shift
team which was missing John Stewart, Lamar Morrison,
Lee Goldsbrough and Kayne King. To compensate, Head
Coach Matt Shaw kitted up for the first time since taking
charge and Paul Bowen was joined on the bench by
Deivids Krevalis, who was playing his first game in a year,
after recovering from injury.
Despite the under strength nature of their squad, Derby
were determined to make amends for their slip up at
home to Worthing in NBL Division one the previous night.
The players travelled down to Worthing straight after the
league match and stayed in local hotel, a strategy with
Shaw says reaped benefits for the Trailblazers.
“Travelling on Saturday certainly helped us. Although
we didn’t get to Worthing until the early hours, our
players were a lot fresher than they would have been if
we’d travelled the two hundred or so miles immediately
before the game.
“We were also able to watch game tape of Saturday’s
game and make some necessary adjustments,
particularly defensively. We played a lot more zone
defence in Sunday’s match and that was partly due to
the personnel we had available and partly as a result of
what we had seen at Noel-Baker.
“It was pleasing to see how well we bounced back
after the disappointment of Saturday’s game and I
felt our guys seemed very fresh and showed excellent
10
The two sides exchanged baskets, with Alex Dorr
adding the next four points for Derby before Worthing
launched a 7-0 burst as Tomas Seduikis scoring inside
and out to put Thunder 17-8 ahead and prompt a
Trailblazers time-out.
And what a difference the break in proceedings
produced. A Chris Shalvoy three-pointer sparked eight
straight points for Derby as they cut the gap to 17-16.
Worthing closed the first quarter with another triple from
Allen and took a four point lead into the first break.
The second quarter belonged to the Trailblazers, as
they took the period 27-9. A pair of baskets from Dorr
was interspersed by a basket from Dan Watts and a
three-pointer from John Gould as the Trailblazers hit
nine straight points and forced Worthing into a timeout with 5’12” on the clock.
of free-throws from Rivers and Chavis, both of whom
could only convert one of two at the line.
Gould struck again from down-town just three minutes
later, before Shalvoy joined in with his second of
the game, stretching the lead to 41-28. Worthing
responded with a triple from Baker, before Dorr hit the
final four points of the half and Derby went in with a
45-31 advantage.
After that, Worthing seemed to find an extra gear. Their
three-point shots suddenly started to drop, with six of
their twelve successful scores coming in the final period.
That they attempted a staggering thirty-nine shots from
beyond the arc almost defies belief and perhaps explains
why it was never going to be their night.
It has been a superb defensive effort from the
Trailblazers, who restricted the home side to just four
field goals in the ten minute spell and the prolific high
scorer Hank Rivers managed just one basket in the
whole of the first half.
It did however make for an exciting finale, particularly
when Allen’s fifth triple of the day left the home side
trailing by just seven points, at 80-73 with less than
a minute remaining. From Derby’s perspective, the
highlight of the final period and perhaps the game as
a whole was a monstrous single –handed jam from
May-Thompson.
Worthing started the third period in a better vein of
form, hitting seven of the first nine points, as they cut
the gap to 47-38. However, a Derby time-out refocused
the Trailblazers, who embarked on a 14-2 run of their
own. Shalvoy drained a pair of three-pointers during
the spell, in which Thunder were restricted to a pair
Twitter: @derbyblazers & Facebook: facebook.com/derbytrailblazersclub
The run took Derby’s advantage to 61-40, but their
biggest lead of the night came early in the fourth
quarter, as Dorr opened the scoring with a two-pointer
which left the Trailblazers 69-45 in the ascendancy.
Allen also fouled May-Thompson as the ball was
dunked over him, but the Derby forward unfortunately
missed the bonus shot, leaving the Trailblazers 72-52
ahead. It was a pleasing score for Derby for MayThompson, particularly as it came against a side
which is known for their own explosive and at times
flamboyant style of play.
Thunder’s late rally forced Derby into a number of
turnovers, but those two superb spells in the second
and third quarters meant the Trailblazers had already
done enough to secure their progression into the semifinals of the Men’s Trophy.

“a community basketball club
with a true community spirit”
This weekend’s Match Previews
We welcome Reading Rockets to Noel-Baker for
tonight’s important NBL division one league match.
The Rockets ground out a 73-69 home win over Essex
Leopards last weekend, a win that saw them overtake
the Trailblazers and move into second place, while we
slipped into fourth spot.
Derby’s trip to Rivermede back in November resulted
in a last gasp victory, as the Trailblazers won 89-88,
spurred on by 22 points from Dan Watts and 21 from
Alex Dorr, both of whom came up with some huge
plays down the stretch. The Trailblazers had overcame
a fifteen point second quarter deficit, but twice took a
nine point lead in the third, before finding themselves
trailing by five late in the game.
However, an offensive rebound from Alex Dorr sparked
the 11-5 run which sealed a memorable victory, which
teamwork was paramount. Chris Shalvoy dished off
eleven assists and Dan Watts adding a further ten
perfect passes and three blocked shots to his game
high points tally.
As for tonight, Assistant Coach Steve Baxter says the
fixture will be one of the most difficult Derby will
face in the remainder of the season, particularly as
Reading are currently on a ten game unbeaten run
in terms of league play:
“Reading will be a very tough match, no doubt about
it. They have probably been the
most consistent performing team in
the division over the last five or six
years. We will of course be looking to
bounce back after a disappointing
weekend last time out and hope
that at least three of the players
who missed the trip to Kent will be
available, which will undoubtedly
make us stronger.
“It’s now getting very close at the
top end of the table so to get a win,
and with it the head to head over
Reading could be crucial. It was
a very close game at their place
earlier in the season and we will be
going all out to repeat that result. It
12
appears that Alex Zurn could be missing through injury
for Reading and he had a huge game against us last
time, but if he does play we must do a better job of not
letting him get open three-point looks.
“Danny Carter missed out through injury in our first
matchup against them, but since his return he has
some really big games. He’s a difficult matchup for
opponents because of his size and ability to hit the
outside shot. One of the strengths of Reading is their
depth. They have seven or eight players who can have
good scoring games on any given night, so we need
to do a good job collectively in making it difficult for
them to score.
“To me, defence is key. We have ample players that can
score enough points to win us games, but we have
to do a better job stopping our opponents. This has
been the case most of the season and it’s something
we are working hard to put right in training. We have
made some improvements, but there are still too
many lapses where teams get easy scores. If we can
make Reading work hard for every point it will create
opportunities for us to get out on a run, which is
where this team really thrives.
“Our confidence in our own ability remains high,
despite last weekend’s results. We know that if we
had had our full strength squad available, or anything
close to it, we would have given a much
better showing of ourselves, but the
players who came in did a good job and
we fought hard in both games.
“We have ten league games left and
while some teams have slightly more,
it’s fair to say all of the sides around
us are very likely going to lose before
the end of the season. Our only losses
at home in the league have been by
three and two points respectively, so
we feel we are a match for anyone at
Noel-Baker.
With six of our last ten games taking
place at home, we will be looking for
a noisy home support to spur us on to
victory. Hopefully you can oblige!

Derby edge past Warriors in gritty local derby
Leicester Warriors....................................... 74
Derby Trailblazers....................................... 76
This was a typical local derby game. It was scrappy at
times, there were few big scoring runs from either side
and the intensely physical play coupled with strong
defence meant both sides were guilty of committing
more mistakes than might ordinarily have happened.
As expected, league positions counted for nothing.
Derby went into the game as leaders of NBL division
one, while the Warriors were in eighth place, but there
was never more than a handful of points separating the
two sides.
As it was, it was the Trailblazers who notched up the
biggest lead of the game at 50-44 courtesy of an Alex Dorr
three-pointer early in the third quarter. They also held
on to take a valuable two-point win, despite Leicester
managing to forge ahead late in the final quarter.
However, successive three-pointers from Dorr and Chris
Shalvoy put paid to Leicester’s giant-killing aspirations
and ensured Derby remain top of the division one table,
to the delight of Head Coach Matt Shaw:
“It was a very satisfying league win, because it’s never
easy to play against the Warriors. They have one of the
best defences in the league and make life very difficult.
That said, I felt we defended pretty well ourselves,
especially in the second half and in the last few minutes
got some crucial stops.
“Our offence wasn’t at its smoothest but again down
the stretch we hit some big shots. We can certainly play
better basketball but this was about digging out a win
and I thought the guys did really well in that respect,”
he said.
Derby began the match with the same line-up which
brought success against Worthing in the Trophy just
under a week ago, with Raheem May-Thompson and
John Gould utilised in preference to John Stewart and
Lee Goldsbrough.
May-Thompson got off to a great start for the
Trailblazers, combining with Shalvoy to net Derby’s first
eleven points of the game. Former Trailblazers guard
Carl Pearson on the score-sheet early for Leicester as he
sank a long range effort from downtown.
American forward Derek Knutty also netted six early
points and by the mid-point of the first quarter the two
sides were tied at eleven-all.
The introduction of Goldsbrough and Stewart off the
bench made an immediate impact, with the pair adding
two and four points respectively. Former Trailblazers
14
player Leome Francis caused a few problems for Derby
over the next few minutes, adding six points for the
home side, before a Shalvoy triple ended the opening
period with the Blazers 20-19 ahead.
The two sides exchanged baskets early in the second,
but the Trailblazers were hampered by Dorr finding
himself in foul trouble, which limited his first half
involvement. The American was held scoreless before
the break and was only able to attempt four shots in
that time.
Midway through the period, Gould struck from
downtown to open up a 29-25 lead, but the Warriors
responded with a pair of free-throws and a threepointer from Leon Henry which saw them briefly take
the lead. However eight points from May-Thompson
and another seven from Shalvoy helped Derby closed
the period with an 18-14 run which saw them leading
47-44 at the break.
The third quarter was something of a turgid affair.
A long range basket from Dorr finally opened his
account and put the Trailblazers 50-44 ahead, but they
struggled to further extend their lead. Despite having
several good looks at the basket, Derby missed an
uncomfortably high number of open shots.
Fortunately, the Warriors were also out of sorts and
the twenty-six points scored within the period were
evenly shared at thirteen-all, leaving the Trailblazers
to protect a 60-57 advantage as the game entered the
final ten minutes.
Derby were dealt a major blow early in the fourth,
when Dorr was called for fourth foul when Knutty
grabbed an offensive rebound and seemed to clatter
into the Blazers American. When Henry drained a
three-pointer with 4’46” on the clock, the Trailblazers
called a time-out in a bid to protect their 66-65 lead,
but it was Henry who was next to score, putting the
Warriors in font by one.
Dan Watts then tied the scores with one of two at the
line, before a technical foul on Pearson sent Shalvoy
to the line. Although he made the bonus point, Derby
were unable to score off the possession.
Instead, a Jason Tucker three-pointer was followed up
by a mid-range jump-shot from Francis and suddenly
the Trailblazers were 72-69 down with less than two
minutes remaining. Thankfully, Dorr responded with a
big three-pointer of his own courtesy of a Shalvoy assist
to tie matters at 72-all.
Twitter: @derbyblazers & Facebook: facebook.com/derbytrailblazersclub
With 1’27” on the clock, the Warriors called time-out
but it didn’t help their cause, as Derby got a stop, after
which Shalvoy hit another big three-pointer to put the
Trailblazers 75-72 up. Both sides then missed shots
before Warriors called their final time-out with around
twenty seconds left.
Rather than attempting to tie the game with a threepointer, Leicester somewhat surprisingly opted to take
the ball inside in a bid to score and draw a foul, thereby
forcing overtime. With five seconds remaining, Henry
scored but failed to draw any contact, as the Trailblazers
players smartly moved out of his way.
That left Derby 75-74 ahead and they used their
final timeout to make sure they could have the ball
advanced to the half court.
When play resumed, the Trailblazers worked the ball
to May-Thompson who was fouled on the buzzer with
his legs literally swept from under him. Initially, it was
signalled that time had expired before the foul, but
after a lengthy consultation with the table, two shots
were awarded and May-Thompson made one of his two
shots to seal an important 76-74 away win.
Shalvoy led the Trailblazers with 23 points, to which
he added five assists, three rebounds and three steals.
May-Thompson completed a double-double with
nineteen points and ten rebounds, but also added five
steals and three blocks.
Elsewhere, Watts finished with seven points,
eight boards and four assists, Goldsbrough pulled
down seven rebounds and grabbed three steals
and Stewart combined six points with five assists,
leaving Assistant Coach Steve Baxter reasonably
happy with the result:
“It was a typical scrappy game, which was exactly
what I was expecting. Neither side shot the ball
particularly well, but that was partly because of
the strong defence being played by both teams. I
thought Chris played very well for us and Raheem
was brilliant at times,” he said.

Injury ravaged Trailblazers lose out in league
Kent Crusaders.......................................... 111
Derby Trailblazers....................................... 81
Injuries could not have come a worse time for Derby
Trailblazers. As they went into the most important
weekend of their season so far, it became apparent that
Alex Dorr, John Gould, Lee Goldsbrough and Lamar
Morrison would all be unavailable for the top of the
table D1 clash away to Kent Crusaders.
While Goldsbrough made a return for Sunday’s National
Trophy Semi-Final away to Manchester Magic, Dorr was
ruled out after testing his ankle during the warm up.
It was therefore hardly surprising that the Trailblazers
were beaten in both matches against quality opposition.
On both occasions, Coach Matt Shaw was forced to kit
up to bolster the numbers and he got his first taste of
D1 basketball in Sunday’s Trophy match, a game which
also saw Academy scholar Jake Wesselingh leaving the
D3 match in Derby early, in order to help out.
All in all, the Trailblazers did a better job of acquitting
themselves on Sunday, but Shaw admits it was a bitterly
disappointing couple of days:
“It was a tough weekend, but we have to put things into
perspective. With four guys absent on Saturday and
three on Sunday it was always going to be tough. I was
pleased with the effort the guys put in, particularly as
we had several guys racking up over seventy minutes of
court time, but they never gave up,” he said.
With Derby so desperately short on numbers on
Saturday, Alex Denholm made his first start for the
club and in twenty-six minutes of court time, he
demonstrated the kind of skills he often displays in for
the Derby Wolves University team.
He finished with four points, gathered four rebounds
and produced an impressive block as he swatted
away a shot from Akwase Yeboah midway through
the third-quarter.
Paul Bowen and Deivids Kravalis also contributed well in
extended court-time, but it was Chris Shalvoy who led
the team with thirty points, which included eight of 19
three-point attempts.
Elsewhere, Raheem May-Thompson’s haul of twenty-six
points featured an impressive 12/15 from the free-throw
line, while John Stewart was the only other Derby player
to make double figures, finishing with twelve points.
Overall, it wasn’t a good shooting night for the
Trailblazers, who converted just 32% from the field,
compared to Kent’s 51%, but it was probably in terms
of rebounding where the Crusaders dominated most,
using their considerable height advantage to capture
almost double the amount of missed shot as Derby
could manage, at 62-33.
The Trailblazers led just once in the match, when
Stewart struck from downtown after two minutes via
a Shalvoy assist to put Derby 8-7 ahead. However,
that lead was cancelled out just twenty-three
seconds later, as Calvin Nevil-Kintu produced a threepoint buzzer beater.
It was one of seven three-pointers Kent converted in
the first quarter and by halftime, they had struck twelve
times from downtown. Thankfully, the Trailblazers did
a better job with their perimeter defending after the
break and the Crusaders were restricted to just four
more long range baskets.
By the eighth minute, Kent were 35-16 ahead and Derby
were facing a mountain, but there was worse to come
in the second quarter. After May-Thompson opened the
scoring with a jump shot, the Crusaders added the next
nineteen points without reply.
Indeed it was over five minutes until the Trailblazers
troubled the scorers again, with another jumper from
May-Thompson, which took the score to 58-28. Kent’s
biggest lead of the game came with just over a minute
of the first half remaining, as Nevil-Kintu converted a
jump shot to put his side 69-35 ahead.
From that stage onwards, the Trailblazers kept pace with
their opponents and they twice managed to cut the
gap to twenty-one points. The latter of those occasions
came as Shalvoy converted his final three-pointer,
taking the score to 102-81 with five minutes remaining.
However, they missed their final nine points and turned
the ball over twice to rule out any chance of what would
have been a remarkable last gasp recovery.
In summing up, Coach Shaw commented that he felt
Kent had been excellent throughout:
“They just didn’t seem to miss a shot, particularly in the
first half and we just couldn’t keep pace. Without Alex
and Lee we also really struggled on the glass which was
a big factor,” he said.

Trailblazers suffer more anguish with Trophy defeat
Manchester Magic....................................... 99
Derby Trailblazers....................................... 76
On Sunday, Derby were boosted by the return
of Goldsbrough and the raucous travelling fans
were given additional hope when Dorr came
out onto court to join in the warm up. However,
his ankle was deemed to be causing too much
concern for him be involved.
The Trailblazers actually got off to a good start,
winning the tip and using almost the entire 24
seconds of their opening possession before a
tightly marked Shalvoy found the space to knock
down a huge three-pointer.
Missed shots followed for Manchester’s
Ellis Cooper and Derby’s Dan Watts before
Goldsbrough blocked an attempt from Alvaro
Alarcon-Lizaur. That was the cue for MayThompson to leap into action, first grabbing the
defensive rebound then hurtling down court at
full pace to slam the ball home, while at the same
time, drawing a foul from Franc Garcia-Garrido.
He converted the bonus and suddenly
Derby were 6-0 ahead inside the first minute.
Manchester, being famed for their own
traditionally explosive starts, must have been left
wondering quite what had hit them.
They eventually got off the mark through Simon
Anumba, who added a pair of free-throws after a
Blazers turnover prompted a foul to stop an easy
score. John Stewart then scored via an offensive
rebound of his own missed shot and after a pair
of free-throws for Magic, May-Thompson scored
a pair of baskets either side of a steal to restore a
six point lead.
The lead was cut to five as Jack Minister scored
from inside and out either side of a Watts bucket
for Derby and moments later it was down to
a single point as Minister added four more
points. Stewart then made it 18-15 before MayThompson picked up a second foul and was
forced to sit with nine points and four rebounds.
With the explosive forward out of the way,
Manchester began a run which literally changed
the outcome of the game. They concluded the
18
first quarter with a 10-2 run and started the
second with a 9-0 burst which even an early
Trailblazers time-out couldn’t address.
The impressive American Cooper was at the
forefront of both runs, netting twelve of the
nineteen points and Magic were 34-23 up before
May-Thompson ended the drought with a highly
pressurised three-pointer off the backboard.
Manchester responded with a three-pointer from
Minister, the first of three in the quarter. His last
took the scores to 47-32 and prompted a Derby
time-out. Neither side scored over the next two
minutes and Shaw had seen enough.
He vented his frustrations by entering the fray as
a player for the first time and with virtually his first
touch, he delivered a wonderful pass to MayThompson, but was denied of a deserved assist as
the unchallenged three-point shot clanged back
off the ironwork. It proved to be a costly mistake
though, as Manchester were quickly down court to
convert a three-pointer of their own.
Stewart then brought the visiting crowd to their
feet with a slam dunk via a Watts assist, before
consecutive scores from the home side saw them
take a 54-34 lead into the locker rooms at the
half-time break.
Derby started the third quarter well. A foul by
Garcia-Garrido sent Watts to the line where
he converted a trio of free-throws and after
Magic responded with four straight points, the
Trailblazers set off on a 9-2 burst, with MayThompson at the centre of it.
After sinking a pair of free-throws, he completed
an insanely difficult off balance reverse lay-up
and drew a foul. He converted the bonus and
after baskets for Manchester’s Cantwell and
Derby’s Watts, he grabbed an offensive rebound
and scored another two points, cutting the deficit
to just fourteen points at 60-46.
What happened next was contentious. The
Trailblazers produced some stifling defence for
the entirety of the next shot clock. They thought
Twitter: @derbyblazers & Facebook: facebook.com/derbytrailblazersclub
they had forced a twenty-four second violation
but instead, the referees called a foul on MayThompson as he attempted to steal the ball.
At the other end, the impressive Cooper led
Magic with a double-double of 24 points, 19
rebounds, 7 steals and 4 assists.
Such things can change the momentum of a
game and that clearly seemed to have happened
as Manchester embarked on a 14-5 run. A pair
of Watts’ free throws along with a three-pointer
from Denholm were Derby’s only scores within
the spell, which opened up a 74-51 lead for the
Magic. One late highlight in the third came as
Wesselingh swished a three-pointer courtesy of a
Goldsbrough assist.
As for Derby, Coach Shaw was pleased with
manner in which his injury ravaged team
competed, particularly after the disappointment
of the previous day:
The Trailblazers weren’t going down without
a fight though and once again, it was MayThompson who sparked the last ditch challenge.
His two pairs of free-throws either side of a
basket from open play reduced the gap to 88-73
with three and a half minutes remaining, but that
was a close as they could get towards reaching
the final.
May-Thompson ended the week in which he
celebrated his birthday with a 31 point haul,
which included twelve of fourteen at the line.
He also added 16 rebounds, two steals and a
blocked to complete a monstrous weekend.
“Against Manchester we started well but they
had an outstanding run at the end of the first and
start of the second quarter and I felt that was the
crucial part of the game. Overall, we gave up way
too many points and we’ll have to tighten that up
in the coming weeks, because it’s not easy to get
a win if you’re giving up 100 points,” he said.

EABL Player of the Week: Kayne King
Derby College/Noel Baker School’s
Kayne King has been named EABL
Player of the Week for games
played during Week 18 of the
2014-15 EABL season, beginning
February 2 2015.
King proved instrumental as the
Trailblazers produced their best
performance of the season to end
Myerscough College’s unbeaten
start to their campaign, 77-75.
The 6’2” guard had 11 of his 16
points in the fourth quarter, and
added 9 assists while helping
Derby pull out the big win.
“Kayne was excellent today,
especially in the fourth quarter,”
Derby Head Coach Matt Shaw said.
“He made good decisions down
the stretch and got to the free
throw line well. He hit 2 key free
throws with 6 second left to seal
the game. I am happy for Kayne
to win Player of the Week, I think
his fourth quarter performance
probably got him the nod.”
D3 Men: Derby’s playmaker went 8/10 at the
free throw line, added 4 rebounds,
and 2 steals for the victory.
U18 Prem: Away to Cheshire Wire;
4pm at Priestley College
“I really enjoyed the game, I think
it’s the best we’ve played as a team
all season,” King said.
“We had a good game plan and
for the most part we stuck to it
well. Near the end they were really
focusing on Wess (Jake Wesselingh)
as he’d scored a lot in the first half.
It meant I could get to the basket
and I was happy that I was able
to help the team by scoring. It
shows us that when we play well,
we can beat really good teams, so
hopefully this week should be a
springboard for more wins.”
Derby, now 5-3, will travel to County
Upper (3-7) on Wednesday as they
look to continue their momentum.
