CongratulaƟons as well to the 7th & 8th grade Girls Basketball team led by coach Jeff Morris, on their championship win. As we ushered in Chodesh Nisan this week, and our Pesach preparaƟons and learning have begun in earnest, I encourage you to conƟnue learning at home around the Shabbat table. Children and quesƟons are central to the Pesach experience, and this is a wonderful opportunity to bridge school and home. Condolences To Shmuelik Kedmi and Naomi Kedmi (gr. 5) on the passing of their beloved mother and grandmother, Chava Kedmi. Finally, I look forward to joining our seventh graders and Yachad for the annual Yachad Shabbaton. We are grateful to the New Rochelle community for so graciously hosƟng our students. Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Binyamin Krauss ACADEMY NEWS Native American Studies The third grade began a unit on NaƟve American studies this week with an outstanding educaƟonal workshop on March 11th. Our guides were familiar faces to SAR. Jamie, a Cherokee Indian greeted the children in Mohawk language: “seh-go” which means “it’s good to see you looking so fine.” He introduced the children to an array of objects used by the Eastern Woodlands. The mulƟ-purpose room was transformed into a NaƟve American museum with tools, weapons, headdresses, pots, cradleboards, wampum belts, clothing, masks and a longhouse. He showed the children photos of himself dressed in tradiƟonal garb. Bob, a cultural anthropologist, explained how Indian children learned many skills of coordinaƟon and cooperaƟon through games. The children had a great Ɵme playing with corn kernels and dice on deer 3/15/2013 1:21 PM SAR Academy Mail - Chadashot 3.15.13 - Parshat Vayikra 3 of 20 https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2&ik=e6a71dc6c6&view=pt&sear... skin as well as trying to catch rings in a handheld ring toss game. The children were amazed by Bob’s adopted Indian family as well as Jamie’s life growing up as a Cherokee Indian. They loved hearing stories about Jamie as a liƩle boy learning about NaƟve American culture from his grandfather. As the third graders begin their research, we hope they will keep these values in mind. We look forward to an exciƟng unit! We Bet Legoland doesn’t have this! The “Lego and the Mishkan” Enrichment Cluster completed their project this week. The children were able to deepen their understanding of the Mishkan through building a replica of it with Lego and were very proud of their accomplishment. The Mishkan is located in front of the teacher’s room. Please come by and take a look! Kol hakavod to Ben Craimer, Yonah Fenster, Jedidiah Konovitch, Charlie Maryles, Benj Rosen, Yisrael-Dovid Rosenberg, Max Sandel, Lyla Tesler, Ella Weisz and Shimmy Wohlberg on a job well done! 3/15/2013 1:21 PM SAR Academy Mail - Chadashot 3.15.13 - Parshat Vayikra https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2&ik=e6a71dc6c6&view=pt&sear... Names Not Numbers CULMINATING EVENT: The screening of SAR's fiŌh documentary oral history film opened to a full house on the evening of March 13th. The stars of the film were seven survivors of the Shoah: Dr. Moshe Avital, Mr. Philip Bialowitz, Rebbetzin Hadassa Schneerson Carlebach, Mrs. Gerda Gross Kahan , Mr. Jerry Lindenstraus, Mr. Curt Lowens, Mrs. Johanna Gerechter Neumann and the 21 students in Mrs. Hasson's NAMES, NOT NUMBERS elecƟve class. The audience included: family members of both survivors and students, SAR Board members, administrators, faculty, alumni, survivors interviewed in previous films, and the extended SAR community. They were able to interact with each other at the conclusion of the film, to ask quesƟons and share what they experienced. All agreed that it was a powerful, meaningful, and unifying event. The evening was enhanced by the refreshments prepared by chef Eran Ginzberg, Mrs. Ruthie Stavsky's superb 7th& 8th grade wait staff, and the decoraƟve touches provided by the Bezborodko-Horowitz family. Thank you to Leo & Rochelle Goldberg and Marc Hasson for sponsoring this event. In library, fourth graders were capƟvated seeing Haggadot from Morah Beth Braunstein’s collecƟon. Classes focused on comparing how the arƟsts rendered their version of the four sons (children). A variety of styles were studied and students decided which picture matches with which type of child. The main emphasis was on the beauty and detailed work of the Moss Haggadah published in 1988. Hand calligraphy, micrography and papercuts are all part of this richly illuminated, hand wriƩen Haggadah. One of the pages in the Moss Hagadah allows for space to document seder guests each year. Students were encouraged to begin a family history of seder aƩendees in their family. Morah Beth shared the family history she is keeping for Pesach. Kedushat Haguf For the month of Kedushat Haguf, keeping our bodies healthy, we are conƟnuing the fitness logs. Here's what you need to do: Exercise at least four Ɵmes a week for 30 minutes, get it signed, and turn it in to the gym by the end of the week. Winners are chosen on Mondays. We will be including all students who parƟcipate at least one week in the final raffle (which will take place at the end of the month). Handouts will be available outside the gym. Some of the acƟviƟes the students logged were swimming, jumping, basketball, running, walking their dog and trampoline. Last week 125 students parƟcipated we would love to have an even bigger showing. Next week is the final week so fill out your log for a chance to win a prize at the end of the week and to be included in the final raffle! 5 of 20 3/15/2013 1:21 PM SAR Academy Mail - Chadashot 3.15.13 - Parshat Vayikra https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2&ik=e6a71dc6c6&view=pt&sear... One of our goals during these past two semesters of Enrichment Clusters has been nurturing the passions and interests of our students. In MulƟple Intelligence Theory (the work of Howard Gardner) he believes there is not just one type of global intelligence, but numerous specific types. Our wonderful faculty and parent and grandparent facilitators provided excepƟonal learning opportuniƟes in diverse disciplines, allowing children to develop their potenƟal in areas in which they display strengths. We all need to be exposed to many different experiences to discover our interests and talents and our Enrichment Cluster facilitators and assistants lovingly supported this exploraƟon. As each Enrichment Cluster was guided by a Driving QuesƟon and the children's understanding of the topic deepened over the course of the semester, through their own exploraƟon as well as meeƟng with experts in the field they were 6 of 20 3/15/2013 1:21 PM SAR Academy Mail - Chadashot 3.15.13 - Parshat Vayikra https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2&ik=e6a71dc6c6&view=pt&sear... exploring, they applied their knowledge to create products, services, or performances. For instance, in Caleb Fitzsimmon's, "build~a~computer," computers were created from scratch (watch for an upcoming ad in Chadashot for the sale of the newly built computers-there was a run on them last semester). Original games were designed-ready for play-in Renata Cohen and Chani Jaskoll's Enrichment Cluster, "Become A Game Designer"; mp3 files of music engineered in Chazan Shim Craimer's, "Music Producers In Session" are being emailed home for families' enjoyment; Chana Sommer's, "Fireworks, Fortune Cookies, and Fried Rice: Journey East" offered children the opportunity to experience many facets of Chinese culture as well as the chance to engage in independent research on a topic of their choice within the broader study; students in Lauren Lieberman's, "Top Secret: Say It With Sign", most who had never before explored sign language, "spoke" and then translated full sentences to a visiƟng guest. In "Just Clowning Around InsƟtute" led by Tommi Blank, the children developed unique clown characters as well as communicaƟon skills to liŌ the spirits of elderly residents at The Hebrew Home. Click on this link to watch a clip of their visit: Mitzva Clowning 2013-Large_2.m4v Sharon Sturm's, "Lego and the Mishkan" has an intricate model of the Mishkan built with heart and with meaning on display outside the Teachers' Room; Rivka Heisler's, "Lights! "Mindbenders: Riddles, Puzzles, and Lateral Thinking ConsorƟum" led by Chana AdaƩo and Gail Krasner created a mind-stretching presentaƟon (click here to view). Children in Jen Sokol and Tamar Kreiger's, "Whodunit? Mysteries, Clues, and Forensics" created a mystery of their own that could be solved with forensic informaƟon with which they had become familiar; and many, many more wonderful, interesƟng products, services, and performances comprised our Enrichment Program and our children's experiences. Thank you to the many parents who joined us as guest speakers and really kol hakavod to our faculty and parents and grandparents who shared their experƟse and passions to make this rich program the success that it is. Coming up, are Brown Bag Seminars: "Fashion Forward" with SAR parent, Toby Smith, fashion designer and "On A Roll: Or How A Kid From The Bronx Started With Hot Dogs And Ended Up Making A Fortune" with SAR parent and grandparent, Howard Jonas, entrepreneur. Also, our first grade Enrichment Cluster semester, is set to launch aŌer Pesach with an array of exciƟng offerings. Please be in touch if you would like to parƟcipate as a facilitator of an Enrichment Cluster or as visiƟng speaker for next year's program. [email protected] Chesed in Action With Pesach less than two weeks away, many of us have begun preparing for the chag. Our students heard about these residents and the important role they play in the packaging of these necessary items that will hopefully bring a liƩle simcha to these families for Pesach. Tizku L’Mitzvot! Kids in the Wild We all know that the SAR parking lot can be a jungle—so what beƩer place for the “Kids in the Wild” Enrichment Cluster to learn outdoor skills. This week, the students learned the safe way to build a campfire, complete with wood and twigs. They first aƩempted to start the fire by rubbing sƟcks together (see photo), but were unsuccessful. On the next try, with the facilitators using matches, they made a perfect fire. And what would a campfire be without marshmallows? Needless to say, the children had a great Ɵme! SAR's Ninth Annual Pi Day CelebraƟon in the Sixth Grade The enƟre sixth grade enjoyed Pi Day on Thursday, celebraƟng the relaƟonship between the circumference and diameter of the circle with circle-related food, music and games. Led by the sixth grade math teachers, Adina Burian and Alisa Schenker, this year's fesƟviƟes were the most exciƟng and educaƟonal yet. Student speakers included Henri Kolb and Ben Stern with a comedy skit, Shammah Pepper-Fox with a history of Pi and fun facts and Avital Schwarz with a D'var Torah. Eran Ginzberg, provided delicious pizza pies, cookies and round crackers. The highlight of the celebraƟon was the highly anƟcipated, annual recitaƟon of the digits of Pi contest. Students recited the decimal digits of this irraƟonal number in English, Hebrew, French and Russian. This year's sixth grade was joined by prior winners, Rafi Kepecs and Aaron Benillouche, who sƟll remembered 140 and 300 digits of Pi, respecƟvely. Aaron holds SAR's record with 600 digits recited in 2012. He was able to recite 300 digits forward and then backward this year! This year's contest was exciƟng, given the large number of parƟcipants and the Ɵght compeƟƟon. The winners were Issac Shapiro with 220 digits, Nadav Schwartz with 218 digits and Yonatan Najman-Licht with 137 digits. The following students received prizes for reciƟng 50 digits or greater: Duly Rosenberg, Drew Greenbaum, Jonah Brooks, Yonah Bergman, Rita Feder, Moshe Wolff, Aliza Meller, Avital Schwartz, JJ Feuerstein, Avi Kroll, Sam Feder, Rebecca Shillingford, Akiva Hain, Yoni Perla and Danielle Dorfman. 9 of 20 3/15/2013 1:21 PM SAR Academy Mail - Chadashot 3.15.13 - Parshat Vayikra 10 of 20 https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2&ik=e6a71dc6c6&view=pt&sear... SAR Cultural Night On Motzaei Shabbat, March 9th, Academy and High School parents were treated to a cultural night sponsored by the PTC featuring a screening of the award winning Israeli film, Footnote, followed by quesƟon and answer with director, Joseph Cedar. Footnote portrays the conflict that ensues when a professor in the field of Talmudic philology at Hebrew University is mistakenly informed that he has won the Israel Prize, when in fact his son has been chosen to receive the award. Joseph Cedar fielded quesƟons from film goers about the characters, plot development, and influences on his filmmaking. He recounted his Ɵme in 4th grade at SAR during a family sabbaƟcal year in the U.S., and even recognized a former classmate in the audience. Joseph Cedar and his wife Vered Cedar-Kellner are the parents of SAR students Amalia and Levi. Cultural Night was chaired by Alice Lebowitz. Thank you to PTC Presidents Stephanie Minkove, Adeena Rosen, Tami Bezborodko and Sara Blechner and to Academy parent Joyce Kinches for assistance in making this event possible. QUESTION OF THE WEEK: In this week's Parsha we learn about giving a "gift" to Hashem. Today we don't give korbanot anymore. If you could send Hashem a gift, what would it be? Sefer Vayikra in general and specifically this parsha deal with all of the intricate and complex laws of korbanot. A very fundamental quesƟon can always be asked about korbanot. The most important part of bringing korbanot is Re'ach Ni'choach. Re'ach Ni'choach means that when we bring korbanot we bring Hashem saƟsfacƟon because it shows him that we are listening and obeying his commandment and law. However, by physically giving Hashem a korban he is not gaining anything. Therefore, what is the purpose? We’re killing an animal; How does that help anyone? We learn that the reason we do this (bring korbanot) is because it’s really the idea that counts. That’s why we find that a korban can easily be ruined by a bad thought. AŌer all, what use is the animal itself if the person’s thoughts are not good. In fact, it’s the thought that counts most! Obviously, Hashem does not need us to burn animals for him and therefore the reason why he values korbanot is because WE are the ones bringing them. Bnei Yisrael would bring korbanot to give thanks and appreciaƟon to Hashem for all he does for us. It is evident that Hashem 3/15/2013 1:21 PM SAR Academy Mail - Chadashot 3.15.13 - Parshat Vayikra https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2&ik=e6a71dc6c6&view=pt&sear... does not care about the value of korbanot, especially since people bring korbanot based on their monetary status, but instead he cares that people are bringing offerings for the right reasons and with the right moƟvaƟon. This idea can be explained through a mashal of a king. A king, who is wealthy and has everything that he wants in the word does not appreciate a giŌ from his people because of its’ value, but rather he recognizes that someone is saying thank you for all he is doing. They are bringing a giŌ with proper intenƟon to show graƟtude to someone who is helping them on a daily basis. I think that this is a very meaningful message that we can apply to our lives on a daily basis. Today, instead of giving korbanot we daven three Ɵmes a day. We can take the idea from korbanot and apply it to tefillah as well. The same way that Hashem does not value the type of korban if it’s for the wrong reasons, so too with tefillah, Hashem cares about the intenƟons behind our davening. Tefillah is really an opportunity for us, to appreciate the things that we have and ask for the things that we want. We therefore need to put in effort everyday to make sure we are having kavanah in our tefillot since this is ulƟmately the purpose of what we are doing.
