Spring Fling
raises $6,000 for
cancer aid
T
he Maryland Horsemen’s Assistance
Fund’s Spring Fling was a huge success.
Several hundred members of the
horse community turned out for the
event on June 8 at the Mt. Washington
Tavern in Baltimore, helping to raise
more than $6,000 for backstretch workers facing hardships from cancer.
The final tally could be much higher,
because the Spring Fling is one of the
frontrunners in the Mt. Washington Tavern’s guest bartender contest. The
restaurant is hosting a series of charity
events throughout the summer, and will
donate $10,000 to the group with the
highest receipts in food and drink at the
bar. Contest results will be announced
in November.
The Maryland Horsemen’s Assistance
Fund thanks everyone who helped the
Spring Fling reach its goal of horsemen
helping horsemen.
Following are those generous individuals who donated or purchased items in
the live and silent auctions. Special
thanks goes to J F Sports Marketing, for
its assistance in the production of bobbleheads.

eminder to trainers and all backstretch employees: Environmental
regulations require that manure containers be used in the proper manner.
Straw and other materials should be
placed directly in the container, as far
down as possible. Material should not
be placed in an already full container.
The area around containers must be
R
swept free of debris. Running water
should not be used to clean the area, as
contaminated water presents an environmental hazard.
Failure to comply with these guidelines could lead to sanctions by the Environmental Protection Agency, which
monitors the situation at all three Maryland tracks.

Pimlico
John
Franzone, a current
member and former chairman of
the
Maryland
Racing Commission, has been
named to the
board of the
Maryland Horsemen’s Assistance Fund.
Mr. Franzone’s appointment fills a vacancy created last summer by the death
of Frank Hopkins. Both Mr. Hopkins and
Mr. Franzone have proved strong advocates for horsemen during lengthy service on the Racing Commission.
“I am truly honored to be asked to fill
the place once held by Frank,” said Mr.
Franzone. “Not only was he a great
friend of racing, but Frank was also a
personal friend. I will do my best to con-
tribute my efforts to the Assistance Fund
with the same caring attitude and compassion that he evidenced throughout
the years.
“Improving the facilities and quality
of life on the backstretch is of utmost importance to me,” said Mr. Franzone.
“And I have always held in high regard
the work of the Assistance Fund.”
The Assistance Fund works closely
with the MTHA, but is a separate organization founded in 1947 to provide necessary financial assistance to eligible employees actively working at Maryland
race tracks and/or thoroughbred farms.
The Assistance Fund is supported by
starting gate fees, fines levied by the
stewards and the Racing Commission,
and by private donations.
Rich Meyer is the current president of
the Assistance Fund.

Thoughts and comment
orsemen have enough problems
these days without bringing on new
ones for themselves.
A small minority is making a bad situation for all of us by failing to follow basic, simple procedures in filling manure
containers and trash bins. You can see it
all over, although it’s especially prevalent at Bowie. (See article on page 1.)
Huge piles of manure and trash are
not only unsightly, but dangerous.
Often, people do not take the time to
deposit the manure all the way down
into the container. This can create the illusion of a solid surface when there is
H
none. Recently someone was seriously
injured after stepping into an unseen
gap created by this very problem.
Track management often gets criticized by horsemen when there are
things that need fixing on the backstretch. And sometimes it is tough to get
management to make improvements.
But it’s hard to complain about management’s failings when we have obvious faults of our own.
When you’re right, you’re right, and
this time horsemen are in the wrong.
