Build a Home While Framing a Family’s Life and Your Own
Larry Brubaker – Volunteer
Read about Larry’s experience supervising at the jobsite.
“The families – those who are about to become homeowners are really great to work with because they are
so happy and cheerful. They do everything and anything – and do it with a smile. They don’t always get
it right, but they keep trying. Most have never used a
hammer, much less a power hammer or drill. Some
who have never painted need to be shown how to hold
a paint brush and use it properly. I watched their
faces as the houses developed and took shape. You couldn’t help but notice the
oooh’s and aaah’s from the women when the kitchen flooring and cabinets were
installed. Imagine the excitement of watching a house come together and knowing
you will have one like it very soon! This is my greatest blessing and excitement their joy and excitement. We who have our homes can remember the excitement of
our first home. Come and experience it again by supporting the Habitat/Thrivent
partnership and giving generously of your time as a volunteer and by financially
supporting the work to be done in the future in Fleetwood and Reading. The best part
is that you will experience that joy with them,” Larry stated.
While many people choose to volunteer their labor, you don’t have to get out and
swing a hammer to help build a Habitat home. Donating online makes giving easy
and donating online to Habitat has never been more secure. And best of all, your
online gift will go to work right away to help families in need of a decent, affordable
place to live.
Giving from a “full” heart is one of the most joyous feelings you will experience.
What you get in return is far greater than the gift itself!
Your gift could help buy:
$10 = Box of Nails
$75 = Window
$35 = Roof Shingles
$100 = Kitchen Sink
$50 = Low Flow Toilet $150 = Front Door
$500 = Siding
$1000 = Wallboard
$2000 = Flooring

Through building with Habitat, Bon Jovi helps
‘make volunteering hip’
Jon Bon Jovi is learning ways to help build communities…he
tells people, “I need you to help your kids do better in school.
I need the kids to go out and know what taking care of that
home is about, because their parents are struggling to keep a
roof over their heads!” Bon Jovi recalls, “In my 20s, I wanted
to be a big star. Now I see a world full of opportunities to
help those in need.”
Tune in to the sounds of rock group Bon Jovi’s music video for “Who Says
You Can’t Go Home,” the second single from their Have a Nice Day CD
(Island Def Jam). The video was shot on a real Habitat build site in North
Philadelphia. Just go to “Habitat for Humanity International” website, Under
“Faces and Places”, choose Video Gallery, then scroll down to find Bon Jovi.
You’ll be playing if over and over---it’s that good! It’s one of those tunes that
sticks in your head.
“This collaboration with Habitat stems from a shared vision,” said Jon Bon
Jovi, “The idea of getting personally involved in enacting positive change in
your own community just feels right to me.”

special contributions to
Reading-Berks Habitat for
Humanity over the past
three months:
Leesport Financial Corp.: $1,000
Sovereign Bank: $1,000
St. Peter’s Union: $682
St. Paul’s UCC: $553.43
Mosteller & Associates: $500
Pennside Presbyterian: $500
Tray-Pak Corp.: $500
Worth also points out that in times of
recession, more people rely on
human services organizations, and
in difficult economic times, these
groups need even more support.
Reading-Berks Habitat for Humanity is a 501(c)(3)
ecumenical Christian charitable organization which
exists to create affordable homeownership
opportunities with and for low-income families.
Families who purchase Habitat for Humanity homes
must first contribute 400 hours construction labor on a
Habitat home, a contribution we call “sweat-equity.”
Homes are sold to the families at no profit, and
financed by Reading-Berks Habitat for Humanity with
zero-interest mortgages. The payments made by the
families on their mortgages are then used to build
more homes in our community. We rely on volunteers
and families contributing sweat-equity for the “unskilled” labor needed to build the homes. Working in
this way, we believe we provide families a “hand-up”
rather than a “hand-out,” while also providing a way
for good people to assist hard-working families in our
community.
Reading-Berks Habitat for Humanity, Inc. is registered with the Pennsylvania Bureau of
