The Swedish Arts Council is a government authority whose principal
The Swedish Arts Council is a government authority whose principal task is
to implement the cultural policy objectives set by the Swedish Parliament.
the objectives state that culture is to be a dynamic, challenging and
independent force based on freedom of expression. We are confident that
international collaborative projects involving art on its own terms create the
conditions for fulfilling this goal. In our globalized world, the arts develop in
an international context, and the performing arts in Sweden are players on
the international stage.
This catalogue does not purport to offer a comprehensive overview of all
the performing arts produced and presented in Sweden. There are many
organization of various characters not listed here that present performing
arts of the highest artistic quality to diverse audiences of all ages.
However, the Swedish Arts Council is proud to present a catalogue featuring
a wealth of artistic expression: drama, dance, performance, circus, opera and
more. The featured practitioners of all these art forms share a desire to bring
their art to international audiences and, in so doing, to advance their artistic
development.
Readers will find everything here, from dance performances for young
children to the latest productions by the Royal Ballet of Sweden. A
contemporary circus venue is listed next to an independent choreographer.
This sums up the Swedish international performing arts today – a disparate
mix of high-level artistic accomplishment, where you can find exactly the
right production or scene to discover, explore and promote to others.
The featured practitioners sent in their information to the Swedish Arts
Council in response to an open call, so they are listed on their own initiative
and using their own words to describe their artistic activities. All the
featured practitioners receive public funding through the Swedish Arts
Council or the Swedish Arts Grants Committee.
Enjoy!

The Order of Dance premieres at Weld in Stockholm in January 2015.
It is said that we inhabit a capitalist realism, in
which we organize the world from an economic
perspective. Is it instead possible to discuss the
globally highest-ranked field of knowledge from
the perspective of the lowest-ranked – for dance
to describe economics? The project makes a non-
material, artistic claim as to the nature of economics and examines how physical knowledge can
secure its place in contemporary discourse.

Performance
In The Order of Dance, dancers Juan Francisco
Maldonado (Mexico), Igor Koruga (Serbia/Germany) and Josefine Larson Olin (Sweden) tackle the
subject together. From three different professional
perspectives on dance, and from differing experiences of cultural policy, they deliver a “movement

Backa Teater
Acts of Goodness is a theatrical trial of the
deeply problematic concept of goodness from
political, religious, ethical, existential and aesthetical perspectives.
In an extensive interview project, young people
in Greece, Serbia, Germany, France, Romania,
Hungary, Britain and Sweden have answered the
question of whether they have performed an “act
of goodness” in their life. Their stories form a
contemporary document over a Europe ravaged
by economic crisis.

Out of the collected material Backa Teater has
sculpted a performance with the use of acting, music, recorded voices, images and choreography – a
theatrical now is created. A now, where audience and
actors together explore what an “act of goodness”
could be and how a person’s story might be manifested in something that could be called theatre.

Boulevardteatern
Boulevardteatern, one of Stockholm’s longestestablished independent theatre groups, has
been around since 1984. The group offers two
productions relevant to international contexts.
The solo performance Hamlet – A Stand-up has
won numerous awards in Sweden and internationally – most recently Best International Show
at the world’s biggest monodrama festival in New
York in 2013. This densely packed performance
encapsulates the entire Hamlet story. Roger Westberg transforms the stage into a swarm of human
figures. Out of the shadows of the dead, from nowhere, he brings one character after another to life.
The dead and the living alike take their places.

Teater JaLaDa is a Malmö-based children’s theatre
group presenting multilingual performances.
When a busker starts singing the song of Parizade
from the Arabian Nights, he is interrupted by two
children who want to join in. The three of them
act out and sing the tale of Parizade, the girl who
doesn’t know she’s a princess and tries to find out
her origins by capturing three magical things: the
talking bird, the singing tree and the golden water.
Through the story, the two children examine and
process their own issues regarding heritage and
identity.

Belgrade in CZKD’s premises.
“How do I react to my life story? What is possible
to tell about my past? What do I dream about now?
Must I say farewell to the old to begin anew? What
do I distance myself from in my past: what must I
forget or repress? What do I tell my children?”

Viktor Fröjd
Viktor Fröjd’s art is all about exploring, developing and casting a critical eye on street dance
as a performing art.
In its creations, the ensemble both affirms and
questions established norms in street dance and
in the performing arts as a whole. It also takes
inspiration from the creative tools and methods
of contemporary dance. The performance work
TUGG premiered at Dansens Hus during the Urban Connection International Street Dance Festival 2014. In this work, some of Sweden’s leading
street dancers explore the mechanical versus the
organic. A visually appealing journey where the
hybrid of dance styles results in an innovative
language of movement.
TUGG goes on tour internationally in 2015 and
2016.
