Degree Conferral
Creighton University confers degrees three times per year: August, December and May. Annual University commencement ceremonies
are held in May. Students who complete their degree programs in August or December may attend the May commencement ceremony
following completion, or with approval of the Office of the Dean, in the preceding May. Participation in a commencement ceremony does
not guarantee a degree is officially earned. A degree is conferred only after the dean verifies all academic requirements are met and the
degree is posted on the student’s transcript by the Office of the Registrar.

Doctor of Pharmacy, honoris causa
John P. Wareham, BSPHA’64
Since his graduation from the School of Pharmacy
and Health Professions in 1964, John “Jack” Wareham
has carried the credo of Creighton University into the
world. A humble man who embodies the principles
of a Jesuit education, his scholarship and support of
academics, research and service have touched many
lives. Professional excellence, fostering leadership
and advancing knowledge are key components of
Wareham’s practices.
Dean Chris Bradberry has stated that Wareham exemplifies the highest ideals
of the School of Pharmacy and Health Professions. He is a loyal supporter of his
alma mater and of young and upcoming researchers in the pharmaceutical sciences
and clinical translational research in pharmacy. With his wife, Lois, the Warehams
created the Jack and Lois Wareham Research Award that is focused on seeding
significant and innovative research.
Upon his graduation from Creighton, Wareham began his professional career as a
pharmacist in the family business and credits his father as a major influence both
personally and professionally. He earned his Master of Business Administration from
Washington University and in 1968 joined the SmithKline Corporation in Philadelphia,
where he swiftly rose to executive positions. His professional background reflects
significant executive and operational experience, and he was widely known for his
friendly and gracious leadership. In 1984, Wareham joined Beckman Inc. as group
vice president; in 1993, he was named president of Beckman Instruments and named
CEO in 1998.
Wareham maintained an illustrious career and fulfilling work-life balance until
his retirement in 2005. Wareham has served on a number of boards and with various
professional organizations. He is a member of Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit honor society
and in 1997 received the Creighton University Alumni Achievement Citation for
service to his community.
For his distinguished accomplishments, for his leadership in the biomedical industry
and for his efforts to advance and improve health care, Creighton University is proud
to confer upon Dr. John “Jack” Wareham the degree Doctor of Pharmacy, honoris causa.

Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Award
for Teaching Achievement
Kenneth J. Melilli, JD
Professor of Law
Creighton University
Each year, students from all colleges and schools
nominate exemplary Creighton University professors
for the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Award for
Teaching Achievement, sponsored by the Creighton
Students Union. The Creighton Students Union is
the University’s comprehensive, unified student
government representing students from all nine
colleges and schools of Creighton University.
Nominees must demonstrate a high level of competence in their field and be able
to present subject matter in interesting and effective ways. They must inspire and
serve students and the University and have considerable interest and concern for
students as individuals. This year, Professor Kenneth Melilli, a Professor of Law in
the Creighton University School of Law, has been selected as the recipient for the
46th Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Award for Teaching Achievement.
Professor Melilli’s career in law has taken him from the New York University Law School
to the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. He later
served as the Assistant United States Attorney in Washington, D.C. Professor Melilli’s
teaching career began in 1987 at the Albany School of Law and in 2000 he joined
Creighton University.
At Creighton, Professor Melilli is known for his extensive knowledge of some of the
most challenging aspects of law. Professor Melilli doesn’t back down to adversity and
he leads by example, emboldening students to be the best they can be. His ability and
desire to make boring topics fun is evidenced by his jokes, his songs, his inclusivity
and his genuine passion for those he encounters. A nominator states, it is “impossible
not to feel envious of Professor Melilli’s boundless intelligence and inexhaustible
sense of humor.” Professor Melilli’s students put him in a category of his own, unique
to his ability and desire to “live and breathe his subjects.”
For his gift of spreading his expansive knowledge in innovative and enjoyable ways
to every student and for the high standards of “eloquence and detail” that he holds
himself to, the Creighton Students Union is proud to recognize Professor Kenneth
Melilli of the Creighton University School of Law with the 2016 Robert F. Kennedy
Memorial Award for Teaching Achievement.

Alumni Achievement Citation
George F. Haddix, PhD, MA’66
Alumnus and Trustee Emeritus Dr. George
Haddix embodies the Creighton mission through
distinguished service, intellectual ability and moral
principles guided by Jesuit ideals.
Dr. Haddix earned his master’s in mathematics from Creighton in 1966 before
pursuing his PhD from Iowa State University. He was a civilian mathematician for the
United States Air Force and the Army Corps of Engineers, and he taught math at Creighton
until transitioning to a career in business.
Dr. Haddix spent his career at the center of the information technology revolution
and is a respected businessman. He retired in 2009 as chair and CEO of PKWARE, Inc.
and PKWARE Holdings, Inc. of Milwaukee, and in 2011 was inducted into the Omaha
Business Hall of Fame.
Dr. Haddix is a public-spirited citizen who gives freely of his time and talent. He is
known for investing generously in the advancement of higher education and is a proud
supporter of STEM programs. Senior philanthropic advisor Steve Scholer has stated that
Dr. Haddix lives a life of service and continues to support the institutions and community
where he started.
Dr. Haddix and his late wife, Sally Hansen Haddix, graduated from Omaha North High
School and dedicated much of their lives to helping students succeed. Dr. Haddix
generously funds an annual scholarship at Omaha North. At Creighton, he has funded the
John N. Mordesen, PhD Endowed Chair in Mathematics and helped found the Center for
Mathematics of Uncertainty. A faculty research fund was also named in his honor.
His reach has touched organizations such as the Boys Town National Research Hospital,
Cues, Child Saving Institute and the Omaha Jesuit Academy. Dr. and Mrs. Haddix were
named the 2015 honorary chairs of the Child Saving Institute Cabaret and in 2013
Dr. Haddix was named honorary chair of the Fontenelle Forest Feather Our Nest. He is
a co-founder of the Fontenelle Forest Honorary Trustees, a group that is dedicated to
working to ensure the strength and solidarity of Fontenelle Forest.
In recognition of his distinguished service and constructive philanthropy, Creighton University
is proud to confer upon Dr. George Haddix the 2016 Alumni Achievement Citation.

the papal conclave of 2013. In 2014, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops invited him to speak at
World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro; he has been invited by Catholic dioceses and archdioceses, and
colleges and universities across the country to give talks, workshops, and retreats.
Fr. Martin has worked in hospital settings, housing projects and community centers, a Nativity school,
and with refugees in Cambridge, Mass.; Kingston, Jamaica; Chicago; New York City; and Nairobi,
Kenya. He currently assists on Sundays at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in New York City.
More than a half-million people follow Fr. Martin on social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and
Instagram. Reflective, provocative, prayerful, and pithy, he offers insight, support, and challenge in
wide discourse. He is a social media maverick who provides purpose and depth in public messaging.
Born in Plymouth Meeting, Pa., in 1960, and a 1982 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania,
Fr. Martin worked in corporate finance before entering the Society of Jesus in 1988. As a Jesuit he
studied philosophy at Loyola University Chicago and earned master’s degrees in divinity (1998) and
theology (1999) from Boston College. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1999, and professed
final vows to the Society of Jesus in 2009.
In recognition of his achievements as an author, communicator, and minister, and as a prophet of
social media, Creighton University is proud to confer upon Father James Martin of the Society of Jesus
the degree Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.

The Creighton University crest includes elements representing the Creighton
family, Creighton’s Jesuit tradition and the Omaha Archdiocese.
The gold stripes on the red field, in the upper left-hand quadrant of the shield,
come from the family coat of arms of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the
Society of Jesus (Jesuits). The lion rampant comes from the Creighton family
coat of arms and the three seashells on a field of white and red sable come from
the Wareham family coat of arms—giving nod to Creighton University’s founding
families. The design for the shield’s final quadrant, in the lower left, comes from
the coat of arms of the Archdiocese of Omaha. The starburst behind the shield
comes from the seal of the Society of Jesus.
U
Ceremonial Mace In the Middle Ages, the mace was a club used in battle and carried by a
bodyguard to defend a person of authority. Over the years, it began to lose its
warlike image and became a symbol of peaceful leadership.
At an academic institution, the mace is the symbol of the legal and chartered
authority of the leadership to whom the board of trustees has delegated
authority. When the ceremonial mace is present, the authority of the University
is present. Use of the mace is reserved for occasions of outstanding importance
and it is an honor to bear the mace. Carrying it today is the president of the
University Faculty, Bartholomew E. Clark, RPh, PhD.
The Creighton University mace was designed and fashioned by Brian K. Besack,
operations supervisor of the University’s carpenter shop, at the invitation of
then president, the Rev. John P. Schlegel, SJ, to commemorate the 125th
anniversary of the University.
Using a cherry wood baluster from a long abandoned staircase in the attic of
Creighton Hall, the oldest building on Creighton’s campus, Besack designed and
fashioned the shaft, head and foot of the mace. Each facet of the nine-sided head
displays a bronze, gold-plated medallion bearing the name and founding date
of the University’s schools and colleges. Its foot is sheathed in gold-plated
brass and cradled in its shaft rests the official seal of the University. At its top,
the mace is crowned with a three-dimensional blue and gold medallion symbol
of the Society of Jesus.

Graduation Honors Students may graduate with honors. Criteria for graduation honors can be found in the Creighton University catalogs.
Students who have completed their degree requirements and meet the honors criteria at the time of print, have their
honors listed in this program, as well as on their diploma and transcript. Students who meet their degree requirements at
a later date and meet the honors criteria, may receive graduation honors that will be listed on their diploma and transcript.
Academic Attire
The history of academic dress reaches far back into the early days of the oldest universities. A statute of 1321 required that
all “Doctors, Licentiates, and Bachelors” of the University of Coimbra wear gowns. In England, in the second half of the
14th century, the statutes of certain colleges forbade “excess in apparel” and prescribed the wearing of a long gown.
While European institutions continue to show great diversity in their specifications of academic dress, American colleges
and universities generally have adopted the Intercollegiate Code for Academic Costumes. This code specifies design
characteristics of gowns, hoods, caps and tassels, including pattern, material, color and trimmings.
For all academic purposes, including trimmings of doctors’ gowns, edging of hoods and tassels of caps, the colors
associated with the different subjects are as follows:

banking became a major force in the city’s economic development. The two brothers
were widely known for their business enterprises and the two couples were also
widely regarded for their philanthropy.
Edward died in 1874 and his widow included $100,000 in her will to establish
Creighton College in memory of her husband. Mary Lucretia died in 1876 and her
executors, who included her brother-in-law John, purchased 6.2 acres of land at
the northwest corner of what is currently 24th and California streets. They began
to build a school and transferred the land, building and additional securities to
Bishop James O’Connor of Omaha.
The bishop asked the Jesuits to operate the
school and the first president, Roman A. Shaffel, SJ,
arrived in Omaha in late 1877; the school opened
on Sept. 2, 1878. One priest, three scholastics,
a layman and a laywoman formed the faculty.
The school began with 120 students ranging
in age from 6 to 30. On Aug. 14, 1879, Bishop
O’Connor surrendered his trust to the Jesuits, who
incorporated “The Creighton University” under
Nebraska law. Much of the initial teaching was
secondary-level; in 1891, the first baccalaureate
degree was awarded.
Edward and Mary Lucretia’s generosity is credited with establishing Creighton
College, while John and Sarah Emily’s philanthropy enlarged it to a five-school
university. Today, Creighton University consists of nine schools and colleges:
