The Ontario SPCA asks that you consider helping
us protect animals from abuse and neglect by remembering the Ontario SPCA in your Will. Each
year, the Ontario SPCA rescues, provides veterinary care, rehabilitates, shelters and finds homes
for thousands of animals across the province. The
Ontario SPCA relies on the generosity of caring individuals like you to perform its life-saving work.
To facilitate and provide for province-wide leadership on matters relating to the prevention of cruelty to animals and the promotion of animal welfare.

The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
(Ontario SPCA): Protecting animals since 1873, the Ontario
SPCA is a registered charity comprised of over 50 Community
SPCAs and Humane Societies relying primarily on donations
to fund animal protection, care and rehabilitation, advocacy
and humane education. The Ontario SPCA Act mandates the
Society to enforce animal cruelty laws and provides Society
investigators with police powers to do so - making the Ontario SPCA unique among animal welfare organizations.

Peace of mind for your
pet’s future
The relationship we have with our pets is a very
special one. Pets provide us with unconditional
love and comfort us through difficult times. As pet
owners, we reciprocate by providing our beloved
companions with the best possible care now and
in the future. However, as we age, many pet owners have a growing concern over what will happen if we are no longer able to provide that care.
What can we do if we are no longer able to
care for our pet?
If you do not have a suitable family member or
friend you feel comfortable entrusting your pet
to, the Ontario SPCA will be there through the
Pet Guardian Program. Registering your pet in
the program will give you the peace of mind that
comes with knowing that should something happen to you; your faithful companion’s future will
be safe and happy.
When you register your pet in the Pet
Guardian Program, the Ontario SPCA will:
• Send you a wallet card indicating what is to happen to your pet upon your death or if you
are no longer able to care for the pet.
• Take in and shelter the pet immediately follow ing your death so it is not left unattended.
• Use the information provided about the pet(s)
to find it a loving home. (The Ontario SPCA is
experienced in re-homing animals; we find new
homes for thousands of animals each year).
• Shelter and care for your pet, providing any necessary medical treatment, until a suitable new home is found.
• Through the use of detailed research-based
surveys and behaviour assessments, both for
pets and potential adopters, the Ontario SPCA
will identify potential adopters that best suit
your pet’s personality and needs to make sure
that your pet goes to the most suitable home.
• Ensure no adoptable animals are euthanized.
How does the Pet Guardian Program work?
Is there a cost to register?
Five easy steps to register your pet:
Yes. Registration fees help us care for your pet until
they can be adopted into a new home. They also
help cover costs of administering the Pet Guardian
Program which includes maintaining records on
your pet, your wishes for your pet and your contact
information. Please contact us for a breakdown
of our enrollment fees. In the case of exotic pets
or large animals (i.e. horses, donkeys, ponies etc.)
please call us to discuss your options.
1. Complete the attached response form and
return it to the Ontario SPCA.
2. Once received, an Ontario SPCA representative will contact you to gather detailed information
about your pet, its habits, likes, dislikes etc.
You sign a Life Care Agreement and provide a current photograph of your pet that will be kept
on file at the Ontario SPCA. This information
will be used to help the Ontario SPCA find the
most suitable adoptive family for your pet.
3. Leave your pet to the Ontario SPCA through a formal bequest in your Will. It is vital that you
do this so there can be no confusion as to your
wishes. The wording to include in your Will is:
“I bequeath any pets that I may own at the
date of my death to the Ontario SPCA and I
direct my Estate Trustee to deliver my pets
to the nearest Ontario SPCA Branch. My Estate Trustee is to contact the Ontario SPCA at
1-888-668-7722 for specific instruction.”
4. Tell your Estate Trustee that you have a pet and
that you have registered it in the Ontario SPCA’s
Pet Guardian Program. Make sure that your Es tate Trustee knows that they must contact the
Ontario SPCA to receive instructions on next steps. We also suggest that you notify your vet erinarian that you are registered in the Pet Guardian Program.
5. The Ontario SPCA will confirm your pet’s reg istration by sending you a Pet Guardian Program Identification Card, which we suggest you keep
in your purse or wallet. You can also give a copy
to your Estate Trustee and veterinarian.
Would you like to save taxes and increase inheritances to loved ones?
You can, through a charitable Will bequest to the
Ontario SPCA.
Charitable Will bequests are:
• Convenient - Can be made no matter how old you
are and can be for any amount you want.
• Simple - Easy to arrange. Simply instruct your lawyer to include a bequest to the Ontario SPCA
in your Will.
• Cost-effective - No extra out-of-pocket costs. Your present income will not decrease.
• Tax Relief -­ A highly effective way to reduce
estate taxes.
• Tax Planning ­- The tax receipt will be used to re duce the tax payable on your final income tax
return. If your bequest exceeds 100% of your net
income in the year of death, the excess may be
carried back to the previous tax year.
• Satisfaction - ­Will bequests are made for personal
reasons in addition to ensuring that the Ontario
SPCA continues its commitment to helping
animals in need through its rescue, rehabilitation
and adoption programs. As well, your bequest
can create a lasting memorial for you, your
family, your pet or anyone else you may wish to
honour.
