CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA

Chapter News
Haaa-chooo! “You’re so good looking!”
So Seinfeld would have it, as springtime in
the great Northeast has ushered in the
song of the bird, the scent of the flower,
and, yes, the pollen that ever tickles our
nasal passages and waters our eyes. On
the links such a cleansing sound is more
often replaced, or perhaps drowned out,
by the echo of “Fore!” that courses
through wood and vale after those shots
that are not so good looking yet leave us
teary-eyed for quite another reason. So
began ASGA Fairfield’s 10th season of
fun, fellowship, and fairways.
Our chapter’s inaugural 18-hole outing
at Sterling Farms, Stamford was held on a
lovely end-of-April Saturday amid clear
skies and mid-60 degree temperatures.
Twenty-four golfers – balanced pairings of
twelve women and a dozen men – scurried about the practice putting green, chipping area, and driving range prior to our
12:15 pm starting tee time. As always, a
chipper Bill Rilley (more by personality
than golfing skill!) snapped photos here
and there of folks eager to begin their
round. Thanks, Bill! We’ll pose for more
at future events! Within an hour six foursomes weaved their way down the first
fairway, more like drunken sailors than
anything resembling respectable golfers.
Good thing for the pairing captains who
eventually were able to keep us on the
somewhat straight and narrow. By the
time we’d passed the mid-point of our
rounds, closest-to-the-line honors would
be awarded to Andrea Anthony and
Charlie Miller, both in the final group,
who boasted drives measuring a mere
1’10” and 1’0”, respectively, from the 9th
fairway bisector. And by the time we had
all made it through Hole #15, an uphill
Par 3 playing directly into the then setting sun, George Hill managed a
greenie some 23’ from the hole for
“closest-to-the-pin” honors. Each winner
was awarded a $25 ASGA gift certificate
to be applied to a future outing. Eighteen of us repaired to The Players Club
for post-round pre-prandials and dinner,
abundant laughs, not a few tall tales, and
more smiling-face photos, which supplemented the golf course hurrahs, groans,
and shots we’ll either long remember or
prefer to forget. In short, a great time
was had by all!
Six days later some sixteen of us descended upon our usual 1st Friday watering hole, the SONO Brewhouse. Our
originally scheduled guest speaker, a
chiropractor, apparently stiffened before

the spotlight had a chance to shine upon
him; thus we had to make our own adjustment by creating, as the Irish would say,
some good crack. Our group is seldom at
a loss for doing just that! And that’s not all
– we were able to welcome a 40+ single
who seemed quite interested in ASGA. In
fact, a few new golfers have joined our
ranks of late – even some men, ladies!
Our most recent recruit, Jeff Parker, came
from the ranks of the 40+ singles. I first
met Jeff only three weeks ago at Oak Hills,
Norwalk where we played 9 holes in a drizzly mist with a woman from the 40+ singles
meet-up. Those interested in social golf
from that meet-up are beginning to sign up
for our outdoor clinics at Sterling Farms as
well as attend our socials. I encourage
you to greet them, engage in some chat,
and make them feel welcome among us
ASGA members. It’s always a shot in the
arm to meet new folks who enjoy golf as
we do and to see our membership grow.
Our ASGA chapter board has been
meeting regularly each month, doing the
best we can to keep outings and social
events organized and up-to-date on the
calendar. George Emmons has a full
shot clinic planned for Friday, May 20 at
Sterling Farms; and he has one more
scheduled there for our 3rd Friday in June.
Regular Meeting Dates: First Friday Social is at SONO Brewhouse, Norwalk, CT at 6:30 pm; and our 3rd Friday Social is at
Zody's 19th Hole, Stamford, CT at 6:30 pm
Next Meeting: May 20th, 2011

Linda Woodruff continues to arrange our
1st and 3rd Friday socials as well as our
after-golf dinners for 18-hole outings. This
coming Saturday, May 21, after our outing
at Ridgefield Golf Course, Linda has reserved some tables for us at Southwest
Café in Ridgefield. Word is they have
some fine Mexican cuisine there. Carla
Klein and Sue Schettini keep word of our
events in the local paper, and they encourage us who have taken tear-off flyers at
our February all members meeting at the
SONO Brewhouse mezzanine to post
these flyers in our local golf course pro
shops or club houses. Recruit new members – that’s where it’s at. Our treasurer,
Barbara Geraghty repeatedly reminds us
that we continue to operate comfortably in
the black, even as she doubles as chapter
secretary. And as president emeritus and
long standing chapter member, Greg
Walker usually has some words of wisdom
to keep us going in the right direction. Kudos to Lynn O’Donnell for coordinating
our initial Nine & Dine at The Orchards last
month; said Lynn, “I wouldn’t mind doing
so again.” That’s the spirit any president
loves to see; this president will be calling
out that spirit from others. Last but not
least, our co-web designer, Elliott Whitney, continues to put in countless hours
“behind the screens” tweaking our chapter
website. It seems every other day Elliott
installs a new function, making our website
updates and communication absolutely
state-of-the-art. Bravo, Elliott!
As I write this letter, our outdoors atmosphere is soggy and seems sullen. Unfortunately we had to cancel our Nine & Dine
this past Sunday. But smile, chin up,
friends: this weekend looks as promising
as May should be. We tee it up on Saturday shortly after noon for our first visit to
Ridgefield in a few years. The temperatures promise to break 70 degrees and
we’ll soak in the sun for sure! See you on
the links.

Do you want to update your personal information on our chapter’s roster? You can now
do this yourself. Simply click on the MY ACCOUNT link at the national website
(SinglesGolf.com). You can update your address, phone, add your cell phone, change
handicap, etc. Doing it yourself takes the burden off of your chapter leaders so they can
spend more time on the golf course and less time on the computer!

CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA
AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION — MAY, 2011
Event Dates: Thursday, May 26 – Sunday, May 29, 2011
Included in the Standard Package:
With great excitement and anticipation, we’re happy to announce our
continued association with the fine folks at Pinehurst Resort in announcing our “Reunion in Pinehurst”. The Reunion on Memorial Day Weekend has shown to be
ASGA’s largest-attended event each year with
attendance soaring over 400 in years past.
It’s a great time to see old friends and meet
friends you never thought you had.
Dates set for this year are May 26-29, a Thursday through Saturday (we polled you and that’s
what you wanted!).
We asked Pinehurst to price this event as if
you walked-in on your own and wanted the
same exact package on the same dates. The
standard package would be
$1593 and the room-by- Details: SinglesGolf.com/Pinehurst
yourself package would be $2349 at the Carolina. Our packages start
at $515 per person, based on
double occupancy and $674
per person based on single
occupancy, which includes all
taxes, resort service fees,
gratuities for wait and bell staff,
etc.
Also, ASGA will rebate to
your chapter $20.00 per attendee if your chapter sends 10%
or more of your membership (as of 5/26/11) to this event. Got 100
members? Send ten and we’ll rebate
$200.00! Details at the event website,
SinglesGolf.com/pinehurst
If you priced this event on its own, you’d
easily pay $1200-$1300 (dbl. occ.) for all
that’s included. Optional rounds on the
day-of-arrival (Thursday at Pinehurst) as
well as day-of-departure (Sunday at Tobacco Road Golf Club — Rated #4 Public
Course in the U. S. by Golf World magazine and a Top 100 Golf Digest)
are being offered as well.
A registration form is enclosed with this newsletter and you can also
obtain one at www.SinglesGolf.com/Pinehurst
Of course, outside of everything Pinehurst has to offer, you get to
meet hundreds of singles from various ASGA chapters. As with all
ASGA multi-chapter events, you must be a member to attend. To join
ASGA, simply go to www.SinglesGolf.com/join
• 4 days / 3 nights, based on double occupancy
• 2 rounds of golf, cart, range balls, prizes for winners and welcoming gift for all
• 6 food functions: cocktail party (heavy hors d’oeuvres and 2 free
drink tickets if you register by April 29), picnic-style cookout Friday
after golf, Saturday sit-down dinner and 3 buffet breakfasts in the
dining room
• Dancing with our DJ on 1st and 3rd nights (Mike still dances!)
• All resort service fees and taxes. The resort service fee pays for
bicycle rental, practice green, afternoon tea, on-site transportation,
fitness center, tennis courts, outdoor pools, etc.
In addition, Pinehurst is offering ASGA members a coupon good towards a 20% discount on a spa service or one round of golf club rentals. See SinglesGolf.com/Pinehurst for details on this coupon.
Room-by-Yourself packages and non-golf packages are also available. Non-hotel packages are available only to our Pinehurst chapter
members.
Make Sure You’re a Member Before Traveling!
It really should never have to be said, but sometimes we have to remind
folks. In order to attend ANY multi-chapter event, you must be a member
of ASGA. Multi-chapter events are special events and it’s very important
that you are a member before showing-up.
Who wants the embarrassment of being told to join on the spot or else?
Also, we occasionally need to remind folks that our official national policy
on guests is that you can attend one (1) event as a guest, either a meeting
or a golf outing, but to attend any other event, you must be a member of
ASGA. We’ve had comments from members asking “why should I renew
my dues if others don’t have to pay?”
ASGA has four (4) employees and dues income is our primary source of
revenue. No revenue - no organization. Thanks for helping to spread the
word about the importance of dues.
To join or renew, go to www.SinglesGolf.com/join
Imagine Yourself in Ireland in 2012 - We’re looking at bringing a group to Ireland in the Summer of 2012.
Have you been there? If
you’re interested, go to our
website and put your name
on the list with the other 100
people. Just go to our homepage (SinglesGolf.com) and
click on the photo of Old
Head Golf Course in Ireland.
