Animals
Matter
Hello
and a very warm welcome to the first issue of Animals Matter for 2014.
It only seems like yesterday that we were looking forward to Christmas,
and here we are already anticipating the Spring! Thanks to your support,
we were able to care for the hundreds of animals who needed our help
over the festive season, we receive no government or lottery funding so
every penny you give really does make a huge difference – thank you.
One of the events Wood Green supports every year is Rabbit Awareness
Week. On page 14 we have details of this year’s campaign and how you
can make “One Small Hop” towards a happier and healthier future for
your rabbits!
If you loved our cover photo then turn to page 19 – we have a simply
stunning photography book which delves into the history of the cat up
for grabs; every page features beautiful images of one of the country’s
most loved animals – make sure you have your entry in by April 14th!
Finally, we would love to welcome you at one of our centres over the
coming months. We are only able to keep our doors open thanks to
your generosity and we love to meet our supporters – we have details
of just some of our forthcoming events on page 22.
Best wishes,

The Bee Hive
Wood Green’s partnership means that we will be
using the centre as a base for ‘Hands On’ work in the
Northamptonshire community as well as a small rehoming
facility where pupils will be able to gain working experience
and accreditation in animal care and rehoming services.
In January 2014 we moved 27 rabbits, guinea pigs and
For the first time since the opening of its Godmanchester Centre in 1987,
Wood Green has started rehoming small animals from a new centre at
the Bee Hive in Northampton. It’s an exciting new project which we are
delighted to be involved in; here we take a look at the background and
introduce you to some of the animals who will be making the Bee Hive their
temporary home.
Wood Green has been associated with the residents and
communities of Northamptonshire for a number of years.
Initially this was through the rehoming of animals and
attendance at events, but more recently through visits to
schools and other education establishments, working with
community groups and social support organisations such as

These animals will be available for rehoming and we will be
following the same rehoming procedure that is in place at
our three main centres – visitors are welcome to come along
on Saturdays and Sundays between 10am and 3pm.
The Charity will also run a small retail outlet from the site,
which in the first instance will sell a range of animal food.

Insuring your
pet’s future
One of the hardest things about working for Wood Green is seeing elderly pets
brought in for rehoming. Many will have spent their entire lives with one family or person,
and often it will be the death of their owner, or the owner moving into accommodation that does
not allow animals, that forces the separation, which can be heartbreaking for both parties.
Sadly, many of our older animals will not be rehomed as quickly

Nanook has an active home with owners
who understand the needs of his breeds. He
would like to be the only pet in the home.
Barry is a typical lurcher; he enjoys lounging
around with the odd few minutes of madness
to burn off his energy! He could possibly live
with another dog but no cats please.
The Foster Circle is a dedicated group of volunteers
offering love and temporary homes for dogs and cats
for periods of up to six months.
Fosterers need to live within easy travelling distance
(maximum of 30-40minutes) of our Godmanchester Centre in
Cambridgeshire or Heydon in Hertfordshire (cats only). We ask
for this distance as it ensures the animals can access our own
veterinary services (or those of Cromwells in Huntingdon if out of
hours). Own transport is usually essential, although on occasion
we can arrange to drop off and collect animals or resources.
Ely Pet Blessing
Sunday 4 May, 1.30pm, Ely Cathedral

Pets are welcome,

terms – she will let you know once she

Pooh 11548 (Heydon)
Pooh came in with her son Tom Tom and
would like to find a home with him, as
they love to curl up together. Pooh is the
extrovert of the pair and enjoys bringing

To be a fosterer you do not necessarily need experience but
must be realistic, practical and compassionate. Support and
advice is on hand or easily accessible at all times throughout
your fostering experience.
