OUR GARAGE
Welcome to Domestic Driver
Magazine, the new expanded version
of J-Body Magazine. Our plan to
keep J-Body Magazine in the second
portion of this magazine ended when
we found that it took up more space
then was nessecary and that our readers don’t care about the name of the
magazine as long as there is cars they
are interested in it!
Our Garage is our place to say
what we want. It will contain annoucements about the magazine, but also information on what we have done to our
cars. This will be the only page that
may not always have just car related
information.
This issue you will find is very
small becuase of the lack of submissions during the winter months. We
hope to have the magazine larger and
better then ever with our 3rd Quarter
issue!

ABOUT THE MAGAZINE
Domestic Driver Magazine is a place to
show what you can do to your own car
and see what others are doing as well. We
hope to help increase the Domestic Tuner
population.
This magazine will not feature halfnaked women or anything of the such, as
this magazine is intended for those who
are looking to see cars, after all it is a car
magazine.
We are a Christian owned and operated
Magazine and don’t want you to put cars
first in your life. That is not our goal. We
don’t want you to endanger yourself or
others becuase of stupid choices. After all
their are many more important things in life
than cars. Like having faith in Christ and
accepting him as Savior and Lord so that if
you were to die you would have eternal life
with Him in heaven.

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMITTING TO DOMESTIC DRIVER
Featured Rides - Must have at least 10 photos taken with a 4+ MegaPixel camera (set on the
highest setting) and must include an article about the car. Write the article as if you did not own
the car yourself and make the article more than just a history of the car. Be creative with it and
make sure it’s something you would like to read yourself in a magazine. Please be sure to give
your opinion of the car and how it runs compared to other cars. Include all the specifications that
you have for the car, and if you have them: 1/4 mile, 1/8 mile, 0-60 mph, 0-100 mph, and track
times. Dyno information is one of the best things to include if you have access to it, but it not that
is okay too.
Reader’s Rides - Must have at least 2 photos (taken with a 2+ MegaPixel or 35mm camera) and
must include a paragraph about your car that is brief and to the point. You may also include any
specifcations that you have, but space is limited and they might not be printed.
How To’s - Must have at least 4 photos (taken with a 3+ MegaPixel or 35mm camera) of the steps
taken in the how to. Must include a complete article that answers the readers questions about how
to do it themselves.
Computer Edited Photo’s - Must have at least 2 images (before and after) at a resolution over
2 MegaPixels (1600 x 1200 pixels). Please include any tips you might have for our readers and
how you made it.
Product Reviews - If you have road tested a new product then please send us as many pictures
that you have and write up a full article on what you thought about it, how it performed or looked,
and if you would buy it again or not. You may also give it a rating if you would like.
News - If you have any inside information be sure to send it to us first! We are all about
exclusive!
Club Insider - If your Domestic Car club would like some exposure, all you have to do is send
some photos of your club members in a group and individually with an article about the club, each
member, and their car.
Creative Idea - If you have any ideas that you have come up with and would like to share them
with other Domestic Car owners then here’s the place. Please include a drawing that has been
scanned or made on the computer. If you scan it and send it to us please scan it at 300 DPI. Also
include how it works, what it does, and what’s involved. If you have already made something, you
can take a photo of it at a high resolution and we will gladly accept it.
Events - If you have attended any domestic car related event, please send us all the pictures that
you have of the event. Please include a 1-4 paragraph article of the event describing the activites
and what went on. If it was a competition, please include any winners of the event.
Wreckage - Must have at least 1 photo (taken with a 3+ MegaPixel or 35mm camera) of a wrecked
or severely damaged Domestic Compact Car. Please include how it happened.
Letters - To be in the Letters section, Email us something about Domestic Compact Cars in
general or the magazine.
Everything Else - We are always looking for new stuff to put in our magazine. Just send us your
ideas. Rally action, drifting, burnouts, track race photo’s and information are always good.
Important things to know when submitting
All pictures that you send to us must be your own pictures that you took or have permission to give
us. Please include who we should give credit to for the submission. You may also include your
Email address so people can contact you with any questions they have. By giving us your articles
and pictures you are giving us FULL rights to it. Please keep all submissions as exclusive as
possible and try not to release your car to other magazines or other places on the internet until it
has been printed in our magazine and until the magazine has been sold for a few weeks.

TECH ARTICLE: CARBON FIBER WHAT IS IT?
It has become apparent to me over
the past few months that almost everyone in the
sport compact scene is aware of carbon fiber as
it explodes in popularity. Another thing that has
become apparent is that although many enthusiasts
are aware of it, very few actually know what it is.
It is being used to manufacture everything from
popular hoods to fenders and interior pieces. In
this month’s column we will discuss where carbon
fiber came from, the properties of the material, and
how it is used.
Carbon fiber has been around for over
fifty years with its earliest history in the aerospace
and military industries. It was originally reserved to
these industries because the cost of manufacturing
carbon fiber was sky high, and these industries had
two of the largest budgets. Only in recent years has
production of carbon fiber climbed, lowering the
price and making its use much more widespread.
Carbon fiber can be produced using
two different processes. These are “wet” lay-up
and pre-impregnated lay-up processes. The “wet”
process has been used since the beginning of composites. It creates molded shapes from fiberglass
or carbon fiber and resin. Do-it-yourselfers use this
practice extensively as it is the least labor intensive
and least expensive. When manufactured in the
“wet” lay-up process, dry fibers are laid into a
mold. Then the resin is brushed over the fibers in
a relatively uncontrolled manner. Resin is added
in layers and layers until the desired thickness is
achieved. If this process is not performed correctly
the fibers can become saturated with resin which
causes added weight, and reduced strength and
stiffness. This method can also create inconsistent
products as certain areas are saturated and others
are not thick enough.
Pre-impregnated lay-up has been refined
over the past 20 years to create better products with
more predictable results. In this method the fibers
are pre-impregnated with resin at the factory. It is
then rolled onto spools and then frozen to prevent
the material from curing too quickly. Materials
made by this method are typically 20-30% stronger
than “wet” laminate of the same thickness. Preimpregnated lay-up materials can be cured in one
of two ways: vacuum bag compaction and also
vacuum bag compaction plus an auto clave. The
composite is placed under vacuum bag compaction and is placed into an oven. The resin will then
solidify or “glass.” When the autoclave is used it
essentially pressure cooks the fibers. The maximum allowable temperature of the cured laminate
is used and the continuous temperature is lower. It
is normally is between 250 and 350 degrees.
Automakers first began experimenting
with carbon fiber in the 1970s. In one example,
Ford built an entire car out of carbon fiber composites in 1977. In the 1990s GM manufactured a
concept car out of carbon fiber that got 100mpg.
The motivation for automakers is to produce
vehicles with lower emissions, lighter weight,
lower cost and better fuel economy. The problem
carbon fiber has presented though in the past is its
astronomical price compared to other materials. At
one point, it cost $100 per pound versus .40 cents
for steel. Now days though, the prices are hovering
somewhere in the $5-$10 price range and it is
making many other industries experiment with the
material. With the recently lowered price, many
enthusiasts can afford to purchase carbon fiber
products solely for the looks. However, they offer
other benefits as well. Carbon fiber reinforced materials perform at higher rates for strength versus
steel and aluminum.
So the next time you think about purchasing a carbon fiber hood or other products, you
will know how to investigate the manufacturing of
the product to make sure you are getting what you
are paying for. Carbon fiber is just getting started
with a bright future ahead, especially in the sport
compact industry.

COBALT NEWS:
I
n the past few months a new
car has hit the streets. It is the
Chevy Cobalt. A replacement
for the Cavalier, it has been
revamped and upgraded with newer
equipment. It comes in several
different types, the sedan, coupe,
and the highly anticipated Cobalt

THEY ARE HERE!
SS Supercharged coupe. The
vamped up Cobalt contains a 2.0
liter Ecotec engine, equipped with
an Eaton roots type supercharger
and intercooler. The engine puts
down 205 HP at 6500 rpm compared
to the 145 HP of the standard 2.2
liter Ecotec. In addition to more
power the Cobalt SS Supercharged
is given a complete body kit and
spoiler strait from the factory, with
countless other goodies. I recently
had a chance to interview two new
cobalt owners, Kristin Buzon and
James Nutt, and here is what they
had to say about their new car:
DD: How did you get one?
Owners: Actually, we just stumbled
upon one. We weren’t even in the
market for a new car. I was getting
work done on my car, when I walked
into the showroom and saw the Cobalt
sitting there. Then when my girlfriend
came to pick me up, I had her come
in to look at it. They pull it out of the
showroom for a test drive, and after 2
hours of paperwork, we’re the proud
new owners of a Chevy Cobalt.
It was a GM Northeast
division show car. I had no idea how
rare they were when we first got it,
until I visited cobaltss.net to find out
that we were pretty much the only
people that currently had one.
DD: What looks does the car get?
Owners: A lot of strange looks,
because most people have never
seen one. It basically turns heads
everywhere. Usually when we come
out of a store or restaurant there is
at least one person standing there
looking at it. Most people are in
disbelief when I tell them that it is
stock.

Cobalt News
T
he arrival of this new sport compact
has created a new enthusiast website.
CobaltSS.net was started back in March
2004, long before the TV commercials and
print ads began. The Cobalt was little more
than a pre production twinkle in GM’s eye
when the site first took form. The sites
creator, Jonel, has been an active member of
the online auto community and decided to
take the opportunity to give back by creating
the site. CobaltSS.net has gained a foothold
since its inception and traffic levels for the
site have doubled on an almost monthly
basis since the Cobalt’s release to dealers.
The site is home to news about the Chevy
Cobalt and is also home to an active forum.
The forums, being the most active
part of the site, house a cyber community
of Cobalt enthusiasts like Jonel. Discussion
topics range from speculation about the
Cobalt, to discussion with Chevy dealers
and interaction with aftermarket vendors.
CobaltSS.net is currently partnered with
4 aftermarket vendors in an effort to help
link the drivers to the aftermarket industry
that supports them. In addition to this GM
employees involved with the design and
12 | | | D o m e s t i c D R i v e r
production of the cobalt have been know
to drop in from time to time to provide
some insight. CobaltSS.net is by far the
most active and comprehensive Cobalt
communities on the Internet today, and only
plans to get better.
The Cobalt already has a great start
and looks to have a very promising future.
I’m sure we will be seeing and hearing more
about this car in the very near future

1992 Chevrolet Beretta GTZ
I
n Toledo, OH you won’t find very many
Chevy Beretta GTZs around. This is why
Josh Wexler, the owner of this 1992 GTZ
decided to buy his car in late summer of 98’.
Since then many parts of the car have seen
modifications. The car has been through many
different stages, but now has found one he
is happy with, at least for a while. Although
the car is not very fast, he does have a few
mods under the hood, such as a cold air intake
and a full Magnaflow exhaust system. This
takes Josh and his Beretta down the track at a
respectable 16.4 seconds.
The exterior work is obviously
where this car really shines. Started out with
stock Medium Quazer Blue paint this car was
no eye candy but with the later added orange
and sliver graphics running along the sides and
down the hood it started to get some attention.
He also ended up adding a full body kit from
FX Design. Along with the aggressive front,
he installed BMW M3 headlights and a 2”
cowl induction hood. To keep the look going,
there was a Battle F spoiler added. To finish
off the exterior, he went with a blue/chrome

This Beretta still called out for
more, so the interior work began. Looking
inside you will find that the seats have been
recovered in blue and silver. Also inside is
the brightest blue carpet Josh could find. The
stock gauges were replaced with white face
indiglo gauges. A 7” directed monitor was
molded into the dash where the radio once
was. He couldn’t have the killer interior
without an amazing stereo system. For this he
decided to go with JL Audio, everywhere he
could put it. You will find components in the
kick panels, and also on the rear deck. In the
trunk there are two 12” W6 subwoofers and
an assortment of JL amps to make this Beretta
heard from blocks away. The Beretta is not a
car of choice in the tuner world, but with time
and dedication anything can be done. 

T
his 1989 Chevrolet Cavalier is
obviously not one of the newest
cavaliers around but definitly is
not the slowest. It’s age sure didn’t stop
owner Kraig MacWatters (A.K.A Dubeez)
from making his car eye candy either.
This 2.8 Liter V6 engine is modified with
a Hypertech chip and breathes through
a K&N warm air intake system. The V6
then feeds into a 2xdual exhaust, equipped
with 2.5” piping the whole way back. The
ride is kept tight with Eibach pro springs
which are assisted by Bomz Racing sway
bars, in both the front and the rear.
Aesthetically, this car is perhaps
the nicest ’89 Cavalier you will see on
the road. The blue aftermarket drop top,
with glass back window, doesn’t hurt
that assertion, nor does the Diza racing
hurricane body kit which is molded into
the sides. The blue drop top accents the
Candy Liberty Blue paint job in a way
that is uncommon in today’s customized
vehicles. Then again, the metallic blue
flakes in the paint will make anything
look good! To continue the overall look
of this car, Dub went with the 19” Motegi
FF7 racing wheels equipped with Toyo
Proxy 4 tires. The semi shaved rear deck
20 | | | D o m e s t i c D R i v e r
lid, custom spoiler complete with LED
brake light, and the tinted tails actually
make driving behind this car a pleasurable
experience. However, when he switches
lanes, be sure to notice the BMW M3 side
view mirrors with LED blinker display.
When the car is parked it is a
joy to check the intricate angles and the
quirky lights that appear to be emerging
from every opening. Perhaps it’s because
they are. The racing seats seem to
glow in the light of the blue accented
LED’s that are laced throughout the cars
interior. A neon shift boot illuminates
the Momo shift knob at the front of the
center console while the lights from the
Nintendo Game Cube can be seen in the
rear of the center console. The Alpine
CVA-1004 Monitor/DVD player add the
necessary ambient light to finish off that
feeling of, “I’m not sitting in a normal ’89
Cavalier”.
When nightfalls, Dub turns on
the Gold Line Blue underbody lights
which illuminate the ground on both
sides, and turns up the beats. The Kicker
S12L7 in his custom fiberglass box rattles
the phlegm from your chest because the
1000 watt Zapco amp tells it to. Since
Dub likes to hear the rhymes he spits,
he’s got Infinity Kappas in the front, and
Kicker tweets in the back powered by
another 360watts of Zapco juice.
Dub has definitely created a fine
street machine. Not only does it have
the looks, but it has the speed and sound
to back it up. To top it off he has a killer
sound system that anyone would be proud
of. Keep your ears and eyes open cause
this car might be at a car show near you! 

WRECKAGE
Going on the 91 freeway in California; it was raining and was 6:00 a.m. I hit a
huge puddle in the passing lane and drifted into
the center divider. Then the car slid on the front
bumper, caught and spun around and slammed
the rear. The insurance company decided to fix
it. So a VIS carbon fiber hood and RK Sport
rear bezel piece was added. All fixed up now,
and it looks great!
