Principal’s Message – May 2016
NRHS Students’ Council
To all members of our school community:
It is finally beginning to feel like spring! Although the change in weather
is much appreciated, it brings with it the start of a very hectic race to the
end of the school year. If your mid-semester marks were lower than you
had hoped, now is the time to talk to teachers about how you can
improve your grades and achieve your goals for your classes. If you
feel that you need further support, please make an appointment with
guidance or an administrator to discuss how we can help. Waiting until
the last minute is never a good idea, especially for those of you in grade
12. We have many supports available, but it is up to you to take initiative
and ask!
I would like to take this time to ask that all school community members
use the garbage cans that we have placed around the parking lot. We
are having a problem with littering in our parking lot and I am asking
everyone to please try and clean this up. Our beautiful school is in the
middle of a beautiful area where people like to walk in the woods, go
fishing and enjoy the outdoors. Please be respectful to both the school
and community and put your garbage in the trash.
And finally, to the graduating class, please remember to pay your grad
fees in the office. As discussed at our grad meeting, these fees help
cover some of the cost of graduation activities and the graduation
ceremony itself. All graduates must pay their student and grad fees.
Fees can be paid by cash, check or debit. If your family is not able to
pay the fees at this time please have a parent or guardian contact me to
discuss possible options. I would not want financial difficulties to cause
any student to miss out on any of these activities.

We’re finally in the home stretch Nighthawks! With the closing of
April comes only a month and a half of classes – which will be
gone in the blink of an eye! To our graduates: enjoy these next
few weeks! We can’t believe it’s almost over either. This past
month has been very laid back for Students’ Council since we’ve
been preparing for a busy upcoming schedule. A fine group of
students represented NRHS well at the NSSSA conference in
Truro, and our Bowl 4 Kids’ Sake team had a blast raising money
for Big Brothers/Big Sisters at the bowling alley. Shout out to you
all! Cool shades and water bottles became available at our store
so get them while they’re hot. Our grads hosed PA and NNEC
grads in the ultimate dodgeball tournament, and although we were
not successful, we won in measure of heart. We had a party for
Mrs. Ervin (“Lord love a duck”) who will be retiring at the end of
the year.. We hope everyone enjoyed! Our Environmental
Committee ran a very green and very wonderful Earth Week
promoting re-useable water bottles and mugs, turning off the lights
to save energy, taking your own pledges and daily tips and facts
on taking care of the environment, and Green and Blue Day. And
finally – it’s that time of year again. Co-President applications
were filed and submitted with election week right around the
corner. Is our time seriously up already? We look forward to an
exciting and busy May with you, Nighthawks, with lots of events in
store! CAW!
CEP Now Accepting Applications for 20162017
Any student interested in applying for CEP (Career Exploration
Program) for the 2016-2017 school year may pick up an
application package from Mr. Foley. Shop choices are Property
Maintenance, Automotive, Retail Sale, and Food Services. If you

Advisory Council sponsor the Students of the Month
Program and we are pleased Subway sponsors the
Athletes of the Month Program. Students of the Month
are nominated by NRHS staff according to the following
criteria:
--someone who is caring and thoughtful
--someone who is a good citizen
--someone who is an active participant at NRHS
--someone who is achieving at his/her academic ability
level
--someone who demonstrates NRHS’s Guiding
Principles
(Safety, Opportunities, Achievement, Respect)
Students who are selected as Students of the Month
receive certificates and Mr. O’Toole will take them to The
Appleseed for lunch.
Appleseed Restaurant Students of the Month
Fourteen NRHS students participated in the annual regional leadership conference at
the École Acadienne de Truro on April 9 & 10th. This year's theme for the Chignecto
conference was Motivational Opportunities and Outcomes (MOO). The students are
looking forward to the provincial conference at StFX on the May long weekend.

Yoga 11 Trip
The Yoga 11 students were great representatives of the school on April 14.
They got spoiled, had a yoga session in the Mindfulness Centre with Amanda
Arnold, did a tour of the NSCC Truro Campus and had a free lunch in the
cafeteria. Everyone went home with a little swag bag too!

CCRSB Teen Reader’s Choice Award!
CCRSB's Teen Reader’s Choice Award is back for its fifth year! The a
ward program, facilitated by CCRSB Library Services, invites students in
grades 7 to 12 to read at least one book from the Top 10 and then to vote for
their favourite to be crowned the winner. The 2016 Top 10 books are:

favourite Top 10 book from May 16 until May 20. -The 2016 CCRSB Teen
Reader’s Choice Award winning book will be announced on May 31 with a
series of in-school awards ceremonies that week.

Get ready to share your thoughts!
On April 11th, CCRSB is starting a school-board wide
survey to talk to parents and guardians, staff and community
partners about how things are going now and what we can,
as a school board, do to make things better for students in
the future.
The survey is only three questions and can be finished in
five to 10 minutes. Your voice is really important, so it would
be great if you could take a moment to answer the questions
and share your thoughts!
You’ll receive an email from the Superintendent of Schools,
Gary Adams, explaining the process a little more. Then
you’ll get an invitation from me, as your school principal,
inviting you to join in. Click on the link in that email and you
are ready to participate!
The thoughts you share will be used to help prepare for
CCRSB’s next strategic plan and to provide some more
insight into how our school is doing.

Music Congratulations & Band Exchange
Congratulations to the NRHS Senior Band for achieving a gold medal at the New Glasgow Music Festival in April. The NRHS
Jazz Combo received a silver medal in their category. Below left: Tyler Green and Mullen Boulter. Mullen was also the recipient
of the Mary Embree Award. We also have a number of students who have done very well at the music festival this year.
Congratulations!
The NRHS Senior Band and Combos are preparing to host a group
of students from A.Y. Jackson Secondary School in Ottawa who
will be visiting NRHS May 21-28 as part of the Experiences
Canada Exchange program. NRHS visited them in Ottawa in
February and had a great time performing, learning all about the
nation's capital, and experiencing a true Ottawa Winter! NRHS
Band/Combo members have been busy fundraising and booking
cultural and historical attractions for them to visit while they are
here. So, if you see them around the school, feel free to say "hi"
and show them some of that good old down east hospitality!

like to study with us here in Pictou County. We are currently placing students for
the 2016-2017 school year, but we are in need of more homestay families.

Want to get your creative juices flowing? Saturday, May 7, Pictou United Church will be hosting a day of workshops, Hands On!
Arts, crafts and hobbies from A (Acting on Stage) to Z (Zentangle Inspired Art) will be available for people of all ages to explore.
From the traditional (basket weaving, needle felting, basic drawing techniques, water colour, beginner rug hooking, stenciling) to
contemporary pebble art there is a wide diversity of media on offer. Some workshops are performance based, such as the Spring
Sing under the direction of Chris Bowman and others allow you to develop technological proficiency through basic photography
and iPad instruction. If the kitchen is where your heart is, you may want to learn Syrian cookery and cake decorating, or if a spring
spruce up is in order learn how to repair plaster and achieve the perfect paint job. The roster is rounded out by sewing a useful
and colourful bag, learning how to brew your own beer, writing with passion, and for those in need of relaxation – reflexology.
With instructors graciously donating their time and talent, the cost of individual workshops is $20 in support of the life and ministry
of Pictou United Church, with an additional materials cost for some workshops.

NRHS Grade 9 PreIB Students Attend Atlantic Coast Conference
36 grade 9 PreIB students attended the 8th annual Atlantic Coast Conference celebrating the International Baccalaureate in Bridgewater on April
15 & 16. Students participated in a variety of workshops, attended two keynote addresses and met with Atlantic Canadian University
Representatives. One of the highlights of the event was the University Games; several NRHS students were on the winning team and NRHS also
received 9 of the 15 prizes awarded for asking excellent questions. The next conference will be hosted by l’École Mathieu Martin in Dieppe, New
Brunswick in November.
