April is now behind us and May
brings the start of Parade season.
As always we lead off with the
Miamisburg Spring Fling Parade
May 21st where Antioch Noble Dick
Church is Mayor followed by the
Springfield Parade on the 30th. Both
are fabulous parades with great
attendance. Our first Ceremonial is
May 7th and the Clubs and Units
are encouraged to set up displays to
attract potential new members. Also
the Middletown Car Show is May 8th
and it is one of the biggest shows of
the season.
If you missed the Antioch X
GAMES you missed a great meal
and the funniest show ever at our
Shrine Center. The Bobbies took
home the 1st Place Traveling Trophy
and have committed to defending
their success next year. Our newest
Club the Young Shriners (YOSHI)
meeting the 4th Friday of each month
is rapidly growing and have their
Friday Night Bites where everyone
is invited. They play Trivia, Karaoke,
and many other spontaneous games.
I have been asked from time to
time why Shriners spend so much
time and resources Parading in the
ANTIOCH CRIER
communities. I tell them we do it
for the KIDS who are less fortunate
than us and need medical attention
as only our Hospitals can provide. I
recently met with a gentleman who
bluntly told me he has 2 months
to live. Cancer. He stated he had
seen our Hospital Vans transporting
the patients and often took his own
children to see us at the parades.
They loved the “LIL RED CARS”
the CLOWNS and the “MINI BIKES”
the best. His own children grown
and successful he spoke candidly
about a Church family he is familiar
with whose daughter was burned
and treated in our Cincinnati Burns
Hospital. His voice trembling and
hands wringing he further stated he
wanted to give back to the Shriners
for all we do for the kids. The door
bell rang and a well dressed man
entered and I was introduced to the
Trustee for his estate. As the Trustee
sat he was instructed to read the text
of the Trust Document. I was flooded
by emotions as the Trustee read
that Shriners Hospitals for Children,
Cincinnati Burns, will inherit almost
his entire estate... a HIGH 6 FIGURE
amount of money. All from a man
who lived modestly, saved his entire
life and was touched by how our
Parades entertained his own children
and the good work our Hospitals do
for others.
That my Brethren is why we do
what we do!

Knights of Columbus was a good time.
Looking ahead to our May meeting at
the Troy Fish and Game with the meal
catered by Christies Catering. Our can
crushers continue to work diligently to
raise money for the hospitals.

There are plenty of left over
Activity Books that we did not sell
at the circus. Please take a book to
anyone that may have bought an
ad. If you are part of the hospital
transportation team, they are great
to have in the vans for the kids to
pass the time, while you are driving
them to their appointments. Come
to Antioch to get a box. If there is
no one in the Circus Office, someone in the main office can get them
for you.
Anyone that would still like to
contribute to the Circus Fundraiser
is encouraged to send in their coupons along with the payment of $40
or $80. Remember this is the only
fundraiser that totally supports the
management and operations of the
building. We were down $10,000
from last year’s Noble Contributions. Check your unit by-laws
they may say that you need to buy
at least one book ($40) to be in that
unit.

Well, it looks like Spring finally
arrived. Steve Yelland rode his Harley
to our April meeting. It was cold and
by the time we adjourned, it was also
raining. He did not have far to ride
to get home though. I still love those
white tennis shoes contrasting against
all the black riding leathers he had
on. We welcomed Noble Mike Hayslip
to the Parade Escort unit and look
forward to seeing him at our parades.

Tis the season!! Parade season
that is! Provost Guard is ready for
this month’s Miamisburg Parade
on the 21st and the recently added
Springfield Parade on Memorial Day,
Monday the 30th.
At our regular April meeting at
T.J.Chumps in Fairborn, we were
honored to have our Potentate,
Illustrious Sir David Heizer with us.
He spoke extensively on the Provost’s
positive contribution to successful
parade set-ups. He requested our
Provost Police Golf Cart be included
as a “follow-up” at parade’s end. We
also had First Ceremonial Master
Todd Pultz and his Lady Lisa in
attendance.
Guest speaker for the evening
was Parade Marshall Randy Izor and
his Lady Bonnie. Noble Izor shared
his requests and expectations of the
Provost to continue the ever improving
interaction with our fellow parade
Nobles and their units. Chief DeLong
gave an overview of the Provost
Guard “Duty Performance Guide”
specifying our post priorities.

If April showers bring May flowers,
what does April snows bring? Answer:
E-Wheels in parades! Hopefully this
Ohio weather will settle down in May.
Our Director Ron Rhoades wants
to have a few practices before the
parade season starts, but the weather
has to cooperate. We want to ask all
of our patrol members to support the
functions at the Shrine Center. There
is a lot of things going on, so be there!
It is with deep regret to report the
passing of J.D. Wilson a great friend
and fellow poker player. Our sympathy
and thoughts to his family and Lady
Shirley.
We need a few good men to join our
unit and have fun riding the E-Wheels,
they are a crowd-pleaser!
As always, we send our thoughts
and prayers to all those patrolmen and
their family members who are having
health problems.

GUN CLUB

The Gun Club changed their
meeting day last month to a week
later as the regular Wednesday for
Vandalia Range & Armory was the
same day the “Circus Update” was
presented at Antioch. None of us
wanted to miss the update!
The VR&A gathering was the first
one we held with an “open shoot”
prior to the meeting. Nobles and their
Ladies are invited by Noble Doug
Hague to come in early and have
a little fun plinking. Where else can
you go for half an hour and have so
much fun for only 8 bucks? This was
something the members wanted to
include in addition to the “registered”
shoots (i.e. Turkey Shoot, Poker
Shoot, Annie Oakley Shoot) we have
several times a year. Nobles were
encouraged to bring their personal
handguns and ammunition but rental
guns are always available.
This month on May the 18th, we
meet at Antioch at 7:00pm.

Pearls” Ball!!!
In March we welcomed new
Colonels into our unit: Tom Hail
(Lady Sandi) and Tim Hammel (Lady
Pamela). Looking forward to seeing
you at all future events!
Colonels, here are two very
important parade dates in May: 21st
at Miamisburg and 30th at Springfield.

looking forward to a great parade
season for Antioch in 2016.
We will attend Antioch’s Ceremonial
on May 7th in Class “A” uniform.

Are you ready ? This is going
to be a busy month starting with
the Ceremonial on the 7th and the
following two parades on the 21st and
the 30th. Don’t forget, Nobles, you
can’t be in the parades if you have
not shown proof of insurance to Noble
Dave Sweeney. Get your PROOF IN
P.D.Q.
May 10th is our last Motor Corps
meeting before our first parade, and
if any Corps Nobles need uniform
ribbons, flags, ball caps, etc prior to
the parade season call me at 2337469 or E-mail me at lfbpete@gmail.
com. I will bring the items you desire
to the May meeting or our first parade.
Because of recent physical
limitations Noble Phil Hansen desires
to sell his 18 wheeler semi truck which
we have all seen in the parades. Phil
would like to see the rig sold and
continued as part of the Motor Corps
in the parades. The rig will be sold
complete with the special trailer and
ramps to load and unload the miniature
vehicle. The Rig was recently painted
with the reclining Rabbit on the side.

Greetings travelers it’s finally time
to break out the firewood, gonna need
it due to this Ohio weather.
The RV Club had an outing that
will go down in the record books at
Cowan Lake, the wind was blowing
and the trees were swaying sideways.
Our next outing will be May 13th at
Anchor Down RV Resort in Dandridge,
Tennessee, minutes away from
Pigeon Forge. Then we are off to
Kings Island for Family Day, June 4th.
We are looking to stay at Beechwood
Acres just a short drive on I-71 to the
fun park. Remember to get up, get out
and travel.

and then we travel to Springfield on
the 30th for our Memorial Day parade.
The Bobbies will start their practice in
April at UD Arena parking lot, if you
are thinking of joining us come out
and give these classic mini bikes a
shot. You may get hooked like the rest
of us and don’t forget to like us on
Facebook.
Any place we go our fans just love
us.
So get ready Nobles it’s going to be
a fun ride.
Brass
Band

The last performance the Brass
Band had was at the Cabiri Fish Fry
on March 18th. We had another great
turnout, and everyone enjoyed the
fish dinner. The Brass Band had a
family carry-in dinner on March 29th,
and we also invited those musicians
that sat in with us at the Shrine Circus
performances. Our dinner featured
prime rib cooked by our president Jim
Broughton as well as other delicious
dishes brought in by our members.
While we had no performances
in April, we were not idle. We had
our regular practices throughout the
month in anticipation of parade season
starting on Saturday, May 21st with the
Miamisburg Parade, as well as the
Memorial Day Parade in Springfield.
Remember, we are always looking for
new members; so if you, or anyone
you know, play a musical instrument,
please come join us! We practice
every Tuesday at 7:30 PM in the
basement of the Shrine Center.

We would like all Seniors ( Noble’s )
in Dayton and outer counties to join us
at our Tuesday morning meetings for a
good social get together. We all have a
good time.
Every second Tuesday of the month
we put on a great breakfast for our
Seniors and ladies are always invited.
At our breakfast this year we have a
guest speaker.
Our speaker in April was Noble
Henry Dodson on Organ Donations,
he is a 17 year survivor of a heart
transplant. A lot of questions were
asked about the organ donations.
Our speaker in May will be Mr. Bill
Broomhall on the Grottoes of North
America. The Humanitarian
Foundation Charity.
The carpet in Antioch’s dining room
will be coming out around the first of
August. We are getting prices to have
wall hangings, entrance carpet and
hall runners made out of it and will be
for sale. This will be a fund raiser for
Antioch Seniors.

the Pote’s Lady Linda Heizer. Please

Parade Season is about a month
away and the 4-Wheelers are tuning
up their engines, filling tires, changing
oil and shining the cars. Some cars are
having some re-painting done and will
be ready to shine when Miamisburg
gets here. We will be ready and
zooming through town this summer!

activities for 2016. The Club’s next
big activity is the Golf Scramble on
June11 at the Woodlawn Golf Course

Patti. Be sure to get your entry forms

solicitation of business card ads for

We will also be discussing the annual
picnic. Noble Smart will be updating
us regarding the date and location for
our Shrine Children’s Hospital fund
drive.
The first parade will be in
Miamisburg on May 21. We are
to report no later than 8:45am –
directions and other information can
be found it the Crier. The Middletown
YMCA Car show (which we discussed
at our last meeting) will be coming up
on May 22. More information will be
provided by Nobile Bill Simison at our
May meeting.

Greetings from the First Lady
How refreshing to see the Tulips and Daffodils blooming along with some warmth from
the sun. Spring has finally arrived!! Along With that, the Month of April was packed with funfilled events.
On April 11th, while our Nobles were conducting business at their Stated Meeting, we
turned up the music. With Phyl and Tammy from the Yellow Rose teaching us some new
steps, we chased away the rain Line Dancing. We had a grand time. Thank you Phyl and
Tammy!!
As if Line Dancing wasn’t enough, we had the return of the X Games!! Talk about
laughing, cheering, and winning!! Thank you Todd Pultz for taking on the task of organizing
all the fun events. Can’t wait to see how you top it at next year’s games!! Great fun!!
Elissa Guild welcomed Imperial Maharaee Tammy Priest for her Annual Imperial Visitation and Inspection. She
also became a dual Guild member by joining our Elissa Guild. How sweet it is!! A special thanks goes to Mary
Shifflet and Amy Thorpe for organizing the festivities. Well done, Ladies!!
Nothing like ending the month of April than with the Potentate’s “Diamonds and Pearls” Ball. What a wonderful
time. We hope you enjoyed all of the surprises and had lots of fun. To our Aides, You are awesome. Everything
was just amazing.
With the warm weather returning, so do our fabulous parades and other outside activities. We kick it off with
Miamisburg parade on May 21st. Looking torward June we have King’s Island Family Day on June 4 and the
Ladies trip to Piatt Castle and Shopping on June 8.
Please stop by and see the Ladies Lounge. All the furniture has been delivered and the cornice boards are up.
The next step is replacing the tables, lamp shades, and a few odds and ends to finish it’s look.

with Margaret Piatt, I decided this could be a fun-filled outing right here

Miamisburg Parade Saturday May 21, 2016
By call of the Illustrious Potentate David Heizer, all units will report to Miamisburg, Ohio no later than
8:45 AM on Saturday May 21, 2016. The Parade steps off at 9:45 AM.
All unit personnel will report to Miamisburg Community Park which is located at (550 First Street) for
Staging. Roger DeLong, Director of the Provost Guard Unit and his men will be there to assist everyone in
the staging area.
The recommended route to Miamisburg Community Park is as follows: I-75 to St. Rt. 725, Miamisburg
Exit, turn West on St. Rt. 725 (Central Avenue), continue on Central Avenue until you get to Main Street,
(Downtown) Turn South (left), on Main Street and go about 4 blocks to Community Park which is on
the left. The Parade ends at Central Avenue and 6th Street.
Immediately following the parade there will be an afterglow at the American Legion Post # 165 which
is located at 35 North Main Street. When you leave the Community Park go North on First to West on
Buckeye Street, go 1 block and turn South on North Main Street, the American Legion is on the West
(right) side of the street. Plenty of parking should be available with some additional parking on the back
side of the American Legion.

News from Cincinnati
From Routine to Rare
Our pediatric plastic and reconstructive surgeons can help.
When Liz and Dan Malarkey got pregnant in 2012 the last thing on their
mind was that their baby would be born with a craniofacial deformity. At an
ultrasound appointment in December of 2012 they were given the news that
their baby girl, Lola, would be born with a cleft lip and possibly a cleft palate
but they wouldn’t know until she was born.
Over the next 4 months the Malarkey’s did everything they could to prepare
themselves and their families for the challenges Lola might face once she
was born. They met with a cleft lip and palate clinic in Jacksonville, FL an
hour from their home in St. Augustine. They felt as prepared as they could
be. And when Lola was born on April 11, 2013 and doctor’s confirmed she
also had a cleft palate but they were ready for it. Of course that didn’t
change the love they felt for their baby girl.
What the Malarkey’s were unprepared for was the extensive costs of Lola’s
surgeries. Liz said, “Even with insurance, we quickly learned that the cost of
surgery would wipe out our savings and then some, essentially bankrupting us.”
After weeks of thinking things over and debating what to do, a family friend
told Liz about her father and grandfather who were Shriners. She went on to
tell Liz about Shriners Hospital for Children and the expert care they provide
for cleft lip and palate repair.
The Malarkey’s did their research on Shriners and made their first appointment at Shriners Hospital for Children
– Cincinnati with Dr. Pan. They were pleasantly surprised at how welcoming and comfortable the staff, nurses
and doctor made them feel.
Dan said they were extremely nervous but after their appointment with Dr. Pan and discussing his plan of care for
Lola they were completely relieved. Like any parents, they wanted to best for their child and they finally found it.
Over the next year Lola had two surgeries to repair her cleft lip and palate. She has a slight scar that is often
unnoticed on her lip. She’s now a vibrant, joyful 3 year old that enjoys the beach and being a princess.
As Children who are born with a cleft lip and palate grow up, they may have issues with delayed speech and their
teeth. Shriner’s will work with orthodontists and dentists to ensure Lola gets everything she needs.
Though she may need additional surgeries in the future, her parents know they are in the best capable hands for
Lola’s care. “The support system they received from everyone in Cincinnati was more than they could have asked
for, especially being so far from home,” said Dan.

WHAT TO TELL A CANDIDATE?? SHRINERS INTERNATIONAL was founded over 100
years ago. Shriners membership consists of Master Masons who look forward to a little FUN with
their fellow brothers in Free Masonry and want to become Shriners. Our fine Organization has
196 Temples Internationally with a total membership of over 260,000 members. Antioch Temple
in Dayton, which was founded in 1898, has a membership of over 2,200. The Shriners philosophy
has been expressed as Pleasure without Intemperance, Hospitality without Rudeness, and Jollity
without Coarseness. Shriners are Internationally known for their fun pageants, big parades,
circuses, and football games which they sponsor.
They are especially known for their fine charity, Shriners Hospitals for Children. Our first
hospital was built in 1922. These Institutions of mercy numbering 22 throughout North America,
(Canada & Mexico) are wholly supported by the Shrine at a cost of over $800,000,000 annually
unquestionably the world’s largest fraternal philanthropy.
The advantages of membership in Antioch are many and varied, here are a few:
First, belong to one of many parade units and participate in their activities. These units are
looking for talented individuals.
Second, Antioch has regional Shrine clubs throughout West Central Ohio which is always
welcoming new members to their monthly dinner meetings and activities. There are also many
social events, dinners, picnics, golf outings etc.
Third, Antioch offers many fun filled events during the year capped off each year with the annual
Potentate's Ball.
Members are advised of these events through our monthly publication “THE ANTIOCH CRIER”
and also on-line at our website www.antiochshrine.com.
Lastly, Shriners take great pride in wearing their shrine pins, where one is often greeted in strange
places by fellow nobles & by OUR children from our Hospitals. All wear the Red Fez as a symbol
of our unity and say I AM PROUD TO BE A SHRINER!
We now face major hurdles in front of us. As we continue to drop in membership it is more
important now than ever to find those new candidates. Our greatest opportunity is at our
feet. There are over 10,000 Master Masons in the Antioch footprint. I am sure each of you knows
just one who you would like to welcome to the Shrine and bring to events as a fellow Noble. What
better way to help complete their masonic journey then becoming a noble of Antioch? What

later than 7:45AM on Monday, May 30, 2016. The Parade steps off at 9:00AM. All Units will report
to 100 block W. Main St., Springfield for staging.
Roger Delong, Director of the Provost Guard Unit and his men will be there to assist everyone
in the staging area.
The recommended directions to the staging area is from I-75 to I-70 East to exit #47 St. Rt.
4 to Springfield. Continue on St. Rt. 4 towards Springfield. Rt. 4 becomes W. North Street and
then turns into Columbia as you goes towards downtown. Continue to North Fountain Street, in
downtown Springfield, turn right. In one block turn right on East Main Street. Follow E. Main St. to
staging area. ALL cars not pulling equipment please park to the rear of the staging area.
Immediately following the parade there will be an afterglow at the Springfield Shrine Club on
Shrine Road. After parade continue west on Main St. until it dead ends. Turn left on Park Road to
Upper Valley Pike. Turn right proceed to Shrine Road and turn left.

The 9th fold is a tribute to womanhood, and Mothers. For it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty and
devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded.
The 10th fold is a tribute to the father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of their country
since they were first born.
The 11th fold represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies in the Hebrews eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for them the rights, privileges and freedoms they enjoy today.
There are some traditions and ways of doing things that have deep meaning.
In the future, you’ll see flags folded and now you will know why.

IMPORTANT!! PLEASE READ
Antioch Shrine Center has a newly installed Safety, Security and Entry System.
We have COMPLETE video surveillance inside and outside the facility. Our system
records and stores all images for an extended period of time and is infinitely
programmable for situations as they occur.
Antioch has had an increasing number of individuals enter the building and roam
around for periods of time unnoticed. And as we all know there is an increasing
level of threatening events happening everywhere. Therefore, we are doing our
best to protect and secure our full time employees and the Nobility. You never
actually know what is prevented but it is recognized by security specialists that
most crimes are committed to "soft targets" and our system typically takes Antioch
out of that category of targets. A PROXIMITY card system with automatically
locking doors should be completed by April 15TH. Much like hotel door
locking systems a card is simply placed close to the readers and the doors will
unlock and record your entry in a memory bank.
Each entry has a camera and automatic voice so anyone without a card may
press the button and their picture appears, communications enabled, and manually
unlocked by office staff. Each Noble and Ladies organizations members are entitled
to an entry card programmed for normal business hours. You must visit the Antioch
office to receive your card and have it programmed. Additional cards are also
available for spouses that regularly visit our Shrine center. There will be a learning
curve to ensure a complete working system for everyone. Please recognize it
will take a period of time to get the bugs worked out. Club Presidents and Unit
Directors that meet at Antioch will be responsible for notifying the office of
meeting times and active members that may be attending to enable cards to be
programmed for ease of entry.
Bruce Puff is not being eliminated and can therefore open the door for anyone
overlooked and we can disable the system for special events. Bear in mind we
also have a burglary entry system with motion detectors as well in the building that
require a special code to disable and enable. Therefore we have to be cognizant of
entry times to make sure the system is in the proper mode.
Very few people have a code for internal security so there are redundant safety
and security systems we are dealing with. The proximity cards are NOT cheap like
a swipe card, so we will be administering cards to only those individuals that come
to the Shrine Center to be registered. A replacement card if yours is lost is $20 so

THE FUTURE IS NOW !!
We have major hurdles in front of us. Membership is more important now than ever before to find those
new candidates. We need to replace ourselves so our BELOVED Antioch Shrine lives into the future!! Our
greatest opportunity is at our feet. There are over 10,000 Master Masons in the Antioch footprint. I am sure
each of you knows just one who you would like to welcome to the Shrine and bring to events as a fellow
Noble. What better way to help complete their masonic journey then becoming a Noble of Antioch? What
about the LADIES and the FAMLIES you ask?? Bring them too! Most events they are welcome and encouraged to join you!
We have our Spring Ceremonial scheduled for Saturday, May 7th. What a great time to get that candidate
initiated and involved in the upcoming summer events!! Get your petition turned in to Pam Kraska in the
office, to any Divan Member, or me no later than May 2nd.
Ills Sir Dave Heizer has set a special fee of just $60.16 for a new or restored candidate. As a first line
signer you will receive the following:
1 - 1st line gets new golf shirt
3 - 1st line gets free dues in 2017 -$105.00
5 - 1st line gets your GLSA rooming paid $300.00
How SWEET it will be in 16 if we can achieve Gold Membership Status at Antioch by having a positive
membership gain! It only takes YOU to find that ONE to join out great fraternity!!
