Start with our 5-channel HTR-5140 A/V Receiver delivering
70 watts RMS to each of the three front speakers and 70 to
both of the rears. Include Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Digital,
Yamaha’s unique DSP, Cinema DSP and discrete 6-channel line
inputs for adding a future external decoder (such as DTS or
MPEG2), and you have the makings for a powerhouse system.
The system also includes the CDC-505 5-Disc CD Changer
with PlayXchange, CD synchronized recording and Yamaha S-Bit

Dolby Digital
Dolby Digital, also known as AC-3, has
been available on laserdiscs for some time. It’s also been established as the standard for audio on the new generation of DVDs.
This advanced technology at last gives home theater
enthusiasts surround
sound performance
that can
maintain the
precise spatial
relationships the
director originally
envisioned.
The major advance offered by
Dolby Digital Surround is the availability of 5.1 channels of sound. Why
5.1? Because the left front, center, right front, right rear and left
rear speakers all receive their own discrete signals carrying the full
frequency spectrum. An additional sixth channel carries only the
lowest, non-directional frequencies to a subwoofer.
What this means is that Dolby Digital is able to create a sound
image that positions dialogue and effects—including moving
ones—with a precision previously unheard of in a home system.

that behavior in your home, using proprietary microchips
designed and fabricated in our own facilities.
We call this DSP. And it’s short for Digital Sound Field
Processing. It can make a few home speakers reproduce the
seamless curtain of sound created by multiple-speaker arrays in
your local theater. It can recreate the ambiance of a stadium, a
concert hall or an intimate club. And when combined with Dolby
Digital and Dolby Surround Pro Logic, it can even expand the
apparent dimensions of your room—letting you experience the
spaciousness of a large theater, while hearing every sound coming from exactly where the director intended.

Our PlayXchange system
uses separate trays to hold
the disc in use and the four
awaiting play. This means
you can easily replace any of the
non-playing titles even while the

And because PlayXchange
isolates the disc in use, resonance and vibration don’t have
an opportunity to degrade your musical signal.
The Digital-to-Analog, or D/A, conversion
is the critical step that translates the digital
code on your CD into the analog signal that
your receiver amplifies and your speakers turn into sound.
So it’s not surprising that Yamaha has invested considerable
time and technical resources to achieve the highest possible
performance from the D/A converter chips that accomplish
this function.
Our exclusive S-Bit technology is the answer. So you hear
smooth, dynamic sound, free of the sonic artifacts that can be
introduced by a less faithful D/A conversion.

satellite speakers. The CD player uses technology with

The satellite speakers are small, yet powerful, and
have magnetic shielding (as does the subwoofer) so
