May Sampler of the Month from Gigi
“The Rose Wreath Sampler” (C. Matthews 1841)
Another absolutely stunning sampler from Gigi’s private
collection that seems the perfect sampler for the month of
May for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere. May,
known for flowers, is typically the most beautiful month
of the year, a warm, springlike month ~ and this year,
more than most, this will be most welcome! May is also
the time when we honor mothers, frequently with flowers.
What a lovely reverie this sampler gives us to enjoy while
recreating this exquisite sampler!
Thank you, Gigi, for sharing so many lovely antique
samplers from your collection that have given us endless
hours of pleasurable time with our needles and fine silks
and linens. We are most grateful to you and all you’ve
done to enhance our needlework journey. The exquisite
samplers on the following pages (with more to come in
our next issue) represent your immeasurable legacy to the
sampler makers of the world.

Above, my meager start on this glorious sampler! I’m stitching on 52/60 linen
with Tudor silks, and for the large border, I chose Granny Smith Green rather
than Spanish Moss, which was a more yellow green and closer to the cotton
overdye but with much less variegation ~ I get bored easily and wanted more
color change as I worked my way round the border. I will probably use some of
the Spanish Moss in the interior areas, like some of the trees and leaves.
The overdyed silk threadpack includes a yellow-green silk. However, if
you are ordering the Tudors, please give us your preference: 2 Spanish Moss
or 1 Spanish Moss & 1 Granny Smith Green or 2 Granny Smith Green.

Sew Darling . . .
... a wonderful Attic
exclusive kit coming in June!
A Jackie du Plessis limited
edition that she calls a needle
case, but it will be so much
more, a needlework
accoutrement, a utilitarian
accessory but oh, so
ornamental. Jackie describes
this beautiful project thusly:
The outside of the needle case will
feature wonderful sweet silk stitched
red roses with other dainty flowers and leaves. The interior will be
finished with luxury silk fabric. A tiny silken bag for your treasured
thimble or any other trinket can be fastened, while the second area allows
for a needlebook made from doctor's flannel pages. A special hand-turned
wooden spool attaches to the mid area allowing for fiber or laces to be
wrapped and stored here. The needle case closes and ties with a soft
vintage dyed double-sided silken ribbon. Jackie and John collaborated on this when Jackie was
visiting last November, and I was so excited about it when I
heard them discussing it. It will be a patriotic tribute to
America featuring the rose, which was designated the official
flower and floral emblem of the United States of America in
1986. Updated photos as available ~ but feel free to get your
name on our reservations list now!

Patriot Patty and her Pin Perch
Patriot Patty is inspired by the Flapper garter buttons that were
popular in the 1920's. She perches on a navy velvet cushion at one end of
the doubled cushion box. Patty is constructed of vintage French patriotic
ribbon, and her face is printed on fabric, reproduced from a vintage
flapper garter button printed on silk ribbon. The pin box is embellished
with motifs inspired by vintage Army and Navy needle books that were
printed after both World Wars. The pin box measures approximately 6
1⁄2” long by 2” wide and 2” high. There are two velvet cushions; one at
each end of the box. The center opening of the box features a slip pocket,
and will house patriotic smalls. The smalls include two needle keeps,
scissors and a scissors sheath and fob. There will be available for separate
purchase a set of ivory scrimshaw pieces (below right), including two thread
winders, a petite ruler, and a star shaped charm with a monogram.
Workshop Fee $195 ~ pre-stitching kits shipping now; fees must be
paid in full prior to kit shipment.
Stitches include Cross Stitch, Tent Stitch, Chevron, Rice, Tied
Oblong Cross Stitch, Oblong Cross Stitch, Stem Stitch and Portuguese
Knotted Stem Stitch.
Kit includes linen, silk floss, pearl cotton, vintage patriotic ribbon,
velvet ribbon, printed fabric pieces, suede, wool, printed card templates,
cotton batting, interfacing, petite scissors, dipped pins, beads and vintage
star sequins.
Students will need to bring to class basic sewing supplies, plus paper
scissors, tape measure, thin sharp sewing needles, sewing needle with an
eye large enough for 4 plies of silk, straight pins, neutral basting thread,
glue pen or stick, double stick tape, and small rotary cutter, mat and ruler
set (if you have one), and pliers for pulling needles.

A Word from Rosi, your SAL Leader!
Por L
uciana D
Happy May Day Stitch-Along Participants,
This is the perfect week to check in on your progress with
Luciana! Didn’t start yet? No problem! You can jump in any time you like! And, if you decide to join in the fun
now, we’ll be sure to get you links to each of the monthly updates so far this year.
Well, I must confess that gardening and a big Easter
gathering sort of got in the way of stitching for me this
month. I am forging ahead. However, I haven’t had a chance to play with straightening the letters, so I’m working along the bottom, instead of my initial plan to go
bottom, top, bottom, top. “Leading” this stitch-along really
made me realize that I like to jump around and change
motifs here and there. I guess I’ve known this all along, just never really thought about it before.
That said, I had this gorgeous butterfly almost finished
when I realized that little Luciana did it again! The right
side of the butterfly is prettier than the left. So, I’m restitching the right side, as you can see below. I also
realized that I grabbed the wrong silks, so my color may
be a bit different than yours. Thanks, Betsy, for showing
us your tree. Looks sort of like the ones in my back yard
that have been shedding with all the winds here in
Arizona. Nothing like those you’re experiencing down South and in the Midwest. Hope everyone’s safe and dry.

This is Betsy Bollinger’s
Luciana. She started in the upper
left and selected darker colors for
the tree. Send your photos to

I was stitching on my front porch earlier this week when Vickie
stopped by to shoot some photos. If it wasn’t enough that a fly pooped on the edge of my linen (yes, I can clean it), I set down
my project to talk to Vickie and when I went to pick it up, a
scorpion was right under my pattern and project. I had hoped to
share a few more photos with you, but the scorpion was pretty
dramatic, so the other pictures will have to wait for next month.
Meanwhile, here’s my butterfly (I love it) and the finished wreath. Hopefully by next
month, I’ll tackle the letters. If not, I’ll keep stitching along the
bottom, working from
right to left.
It’s not too late to start ~ and join
us in this SAL for this gorgeous
reproduction!

Barbara Ana Designs’ Long May She Wave $12 is an interesting tribute to everything
American. Uncle Sam and the American flag feature prominently. More discreet is Betsy
Ross, needle in hand, just about finishing sewing the very first American flag. So in a
way, its also a tribute to all the women behind the great men. The cross stitch pattern
(133 x 149) features a tiny cartouche in petite stitch with the date 1778.

Easter's come and gone, but this little Bunny Needle
Nanny $12 is perfect any time of the year ~ made with
those super strong rare earth magnets, it’s just the perfect
thing for holding your needles, pins and scissors. Heck,
just a cute little pin to wear ~ how great is that?
Sheep Eyeglass Holder $12 Can't find
your glasses? No where to put them? Here
is the perfect answer! These charming
Magnetic Eyeglass Holders are easily
attached to your clothing, with magnets
instead of damaging pins, and will keep
those glasses where you can actually find
them. The older I get, the more I need
these as well as my glasses! What a relief !
!
Kitties Counting Set $20 Originally designed for counting knitting gauges (as it
is photographed on knitting), it is the perfect tool to count your stitches on your
linen (or other ground fabric). Simply place the ruler, which is laser-cut for
extreme accuracy, onto your ground fabric. Align the ruler with the first stitch
you wish to count, place the magnets behind the ruler to secure it, and count! I
found Linda’s linen project handy, so I used it for the photo below.
Puffin Pattern Keepers-Kitty $14 Now with stronger
and larger magnets that are easier to keep track of ! Made
with beautiful honey-color finished laser-cut solid Alder,
these pretty and practical keepers mean you don't have to
drag along those clunky magnet boards for your project,
they work right on the pattern! How great is that?

Handblessings’ Cubistic Color Wheel
Needlepoint with One Charm $13 Every
stitcher needs a color wheel, and Cubistic
Color Wheel is a perfect color "wheel". With
its modern lines and bright colors, it is a very
striking piece, like a modern painting! The
“Create” charm finishes it perfectly!
And Even More New!
Handblessings’ “Puddle Dancer w/
Heart Charm” $5 recalls precious
moments and cherished memories, like
this little boy splashing in the puddle, a
special memory, and thus it includes a
heart charm to attach in the upper left
corner. Framed or finished as a standup, this small tabloid will become a
treasured part of your decor.

Wildflowers Pocket $12.50 Pocket size 5 ½ x 6.
Wildflowers Pocket was created, designer Eileen/
Handblessings tells us, to hold a small book of stitches.
The backside (chart included) of the pocket is a mirror
image of the front side shown. It can also be used to hold
stitching tools or any number of treasures. Instructions for
finishing as a pocket are included.
Coming Very Soon!
We were thrilled last week when Pam Schmidt of The Prairie Sampler visited us and
showed us the model for her beautiful sampler basket. It ties at the corners but, when
untied, lies flat, easily transportable to your stitching events/needlework classes. Charts
for this wonderful needlework accessory will be in the shop very soon. I love the verse:
Count that day lost whose low descending sun Views from thy hand no worthy action done.

New from Barbara Ana Designs
Something Wicked $12 A quote from Shakespeare's Macbeth where the 3 witches' dance
and songs are interrupted by a knock on the door and one of the witches playfully
remarks: "By the prickling of my thumb something wicked this way comes" Barbara
Ana's delightful interpretation of the witch is a red- haired lady with a pale, moon-like
face and freckles. Her full length dress is beautifully depicted in cross stitch, with frilled
cuffs, a narrow waist and an ample skirt combining several layers of fabric with Quaker
motifs. Her eerie, orange-eyed cat stands still at her feet. A discreet motif with moon and
stars runs in the background of the pattern. The choice of colors is very subdued yet
rich, as shown in the vertical diamond motif that structures the piece. 112w x 128h
The Rampant Cats Sampler $12 The traditional looking sampler is full of unexpected
surprises, such as the ones Barbara Ana loves to place in her designs. Look closely and
you will notice that the gentleman and the lady differ from Adam and Eve, not only
because they are fully dressed, but because they seem to be tempting the snake, not the
other way round, and further more they are holding a pumpkin! There are many
interesting details to stitch in this rather large sampler (157w x 184h) such as the
rampant cats that seem to be levitating on their hind legs. Colors have been very
carefully selected by Barbara Ana for this sampler. In two areas she uses a combination
of 2 strands in different colors so as to create the exact hue she is looking for. "All
hallows eve" and initials are stitched over a single thread.
The Witch, The Crow and the Pumpkin $11 An
orange-clad witch is riding her favorite mount, a
crow with a large eerie eye staring at us. The
pattern is full of Barbara Ana's favorite symbols
such as keys and houses, dates, Quaker motifs and
more. The chart comes with a free bonus pattern
(53 x 33) featuring a plant with tiny kittens and a
spider. The round circles featured on the picture
are not cross stitched but made of felt appliqué.
Or just stitch and frame the design (89 x 108)
without the felt appliqué!

“Speak to the Earth Sampler” $15. This
classic sampler by Sandy Orton received a
great deal of positive press on FaceBook a few
weeks ago when Robin posted her beautiful
finish, right, and Kooler Design Studios has just
released the chart. We have it ordered and on
its way. You may reserve yours now ~ and
we’ll save you one as well, Carol!
New!!!
Our advance copy of this just-published
soft-cover book by finisher extraordinaire
Marsha Brown arrived this afternoon, and
I couldn’t wait to give you a glimpse of it!
Paging through it quickly, it has 22
chapters filled with techniques and color
photos and graphic aids to help even a
novice to professionally finish your needle
art. It also includes lists of necessary tools
and materials to help you finish
beautifully! Reserve your copy now, $55.
Coming Soon!
We’re so excited about the collaboration with artist and former Attic staff member
Nancy ~ it was her artistry that inspired Vickie/NeedleWorkPress’s design for “Sweet
Land” ~ Andrea just completed the model, and the chart will be available soon!
Many agreed that it was the most beautiful wedding
ceremony they’d ever witnessed. Tess and Allen shared
their special day with hundreds of friends and relatives and
shared the story of how they met 17 1/2 years ago when
they were both married to their now-deceased spouses ~
over the years both lost their spouses to cancer, and now
they are continuing their life’s journey together. There
wasn’t a dry eye in the house ... that is, in the church!
