ominated for ten Academy Awards and winner
of seven, Gravity is a British American fictitious
movie that explores the understanding of gravity.
Directed, co-written, co-produced, and co-edited by
Alfonso Cuarón, the movie stars Sandra Bullock and George
Clooney. The two superstars play astronauts who go on a
space mission and end up the last two survivors of the trip.
To create the story, the film incorporated motifs
from shipwreck and wilderness survival stories about
psychological changes and resilience in the aftermath
of catastrophe. Bullock’s character, Stone was used
to demonstrate the clarity of mind, one’s persistence,
and improvisation in times of isolation. The film also
uses spiritual themes in the form of Stone’s daughter’s
accidental death, the will to keep going against
overwhelming odds, and the impossible rescue. Then,
to create a heightened impact within the film, Cuarón
fully utilised the perspectives between objective and
subjective. For instance, the contrast between the Earth
and the depth of endless dark space, as well as the chaos
of the debris with the silence of space vacuum.
The production had a budget of USD$100 million
and began filming in late May 2011. Live elements were
shot in the UK while the landing scene was filmed in
Lake Powell, Arizona, the same place where the 1968
Planet of the Apes landing scene was captured. The rest
of the movie required CG animation, 20 percent more
than that of James Cameron’s Avatar. The reason for
this move was due to the making of realistic scenes. For
most of Bullock’s scenes, she was placed inside a giant
mechanical rig for up to 10 hours a day, communicating
with others through a headset. To honour and celebrate
Bullock’s dedication, the team nicknamed the rig
“Sandy’s cage’’ and gave it a lighted sign to create a less
claustrophobic atmosphere during filming.
Grossing at an impressive amount of USD$712 million
worldwide, the movie became the eighth highest grossing
film in 2013.
