THE HOBBIT:
THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG (P13)
COMEDY/SPORTS
THE GRUDGE MATCH (P13)
This is the second installment of Peter Jackson’s
epic take on the J.R.R. Tolkien masterpiece.
Nominated for three Oscars and a slew of other
industry awards, the much acclaimed second
movie improves on the ground laid by the first
instalment and sees a lot more action and a
faster pace.
After making it over the misty mountains, the
motley crew of adventurers containing dwarfs,
a hobbit and of course wizard Gandalf the Grey,
journey on towards Erebor to reclaim the Dwarf
city from the clutches of the Dragon, Smaug.
Old enmities surface when they chance upon
the Wood Elves in Mirkwood, featuring some
well known faces; the elves are at first reluctant
to help and the Dwarves, mistrusting. It’s a race
against time to get to the secret door leading to
Erebor before the secret door is shut for good
or they become Warg meat at the hands of the
chasing Orc pack.
Meanwhile Gandalf, taking leave from the party
as is his wont, tries to convince Saruman, Elrond
and Galadriel of the ancient evil that is stirring,
reawakened by a certain Hobbit finding a certain
precious Ring of Power.
Starring: Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage,
Dean O’Gorman, Aidan Turner, Graham McTavish,
William Kircher, James Nesbitt
Running time: 3 hrs
Two well-past-the-final-round aging boxers,
Henry ‘Razor’ Sharp (Stallone) and Billy ‘The
Kid’ McDonnen (De Niro), who, after spending a
whole career knocking lumps out of each other
in a fierce rivalry, are convinced to get back in the
ring once more to settle a long standing grudge.
Of course, it is over a woman, the particularly
foxy Sally, whom Razor was seeing at the time.
She cheats on Razor with The Kid and winds
up pregnant, thus Razor decides to retire rather
than fight him one last time. A strong cast also
featuring Alan Arkin and Kim Basinger really
adds to the film’s weight and with some quality
cameos, this is a fun movie that throws some
good punches.
Starring: Robert De Niro, Sylvester Stallone, Kim Basinger,
Rich Little, Ireland Baldwin, Anthony Anderson,
Mason Mackie, Kevin Hart
Running time: 2 hrs 5 mins

DESOLATION OF SMAUG
starts to get into the thick
of the action as the dwarves
(with hobbit and wizard in
tow) resume their quest to
free Erebor, continuing from
the events of the previous
film An Unexpected Journey.
Only eight minutes
shorter than its predecessor,
the film is a whopping 161
minutes long but justifies
its length with stunning
visuals and action-packed
sequences. Like the first
Hobbit movie, The Desolation
of Smaug also proved a
box office hit, grossing over
$953 million worldwide and
making it the 24th highestgrossing film of all time.
Sir Ian McKellen, Martin
Freeman, Richard Armitage,
and a whole host of other
notable actors reprise their
roles from An Unexpected
Journey, accompanied by
new faces Evangeline Lilly
and Lord of the Rings firm
favourite Orlando Bloom who
make their first appearances
in this trilogy. Benedict
Cumberbatch also produces
a masterful display as the
voice of Smaug, the dragon
and primary villain, as well
as the Necromancer of Dol
Guldur.
Shot and produced
simultaneously with An
Unexpected Journey, this
film was meant to be the
conclusion of the originally
planned two-part adaptation
of The Hobbit, but the scale
of the project necessitated
the birth of a third movie, The
Battle of the Five Armies. It
is expected to hit cinemas in
December 2014.

People responded to
this and the film became a
huge commercial success,
raking in a staggering US$351
million dollars next to the
relatively modest budget of
$70 million, so much so that
a sequel has already been
planned and is due to start
production this year. A big
part of its success can be
credited to the director, Louis
Letterier, one of the new
wave of French directors
making it big in Hollywood.
He pulls the strings with
perfection and builds on his
previous work in Clash of
the Titans and the first two
Transporter movies.
In terms of the on screen
talent, there are a huge array
of solid performances to
choose from, Jesse Eisenberg
is geek chic man of the
moment after his absorbing
portrayal as Mark Zuckerberg
in the Facebook movie, and
despite not reaching the
same heights in Now You See
Me, his portrayal as puppet
master of the Four Horsemen
is still believable.
The other three
Horsemen don’t fare as
well in terms of character
development, however
much like Eisenberg, Woody
Harrelson, Isla Fisher and
Dave Franco all turn in good
performances, although a
little more exploration into
their relationships with one
another would have been
welcome.
Overall though, the film
is a lot of fun and well worth
sitting through the two hours
of fast paced magical heist
shenanigans.

The Gods of Olympus are weakening
and the Titans are out for revenge.
THE SAGA OF GODS,
MYTHS AND MONSTERS
CONTINUES IN WRATH
OF THE TITANS, the sequel
to the 2010 fantasy film
Clash of the Titans. Director
Jonathan Liebesman decided
to follow in the footsteps of
the previous film by using
3D conversion rather than
shooting it in 3D, both to
ensure better quality and
composition as well as to
give the imagery better
texture than he would by
shooting digitally.
Very similar in concept
to Percy Jackson & the
Olympians: The Lightning
Thief - which was also
released in 2010 – but with
a much grittier feel, the
film was shot on location in
Surrey, South Wales and in
the Canary Islands on the
island of Tenerife. The studio
spared no expense on special
effects with thrilling battles
between the protagonists
and all manner of mythical
monsters, including a
gripping forest chase with
two cyclopses.
Avatar star Sam
Worthington puts his actionmovie skills to good use
alongside other reputable
names such as Liam Neeson,
Ralph Fiennes, Rosamund
Pike and Bill Nighy. Critics
commented that Wrath of
the Titans was more ‘fun’
than its predecessor, with
Richard Corliss of Time
magazine writing, “Wrath
[of the Titans] radiates the
straight-forward, straightfaced pleasures of the
mytho-muscular epics,
like Hercules and Jason and
the Argonauts, produced in
Europe a half-century ago.”

Screenwriters Dan
Mazeau and David Leslie
Johnson were hired

November 2011 to develop

Worthington expressed that
a third movie was unlikely.
