The new prep students had a very smooth start and by 10.00am were beginning their first
lesson for the year.
I would like to welcome all the new families to Chelsea PS. I am sure you will have a long and
happy association with the school. If you have any questions about school operations our
friendly staff will be happy to assist you.
I would also like to welcome new staff members: Jessica Doolan teaching Prep, Andrew
Cumming teaching grade 3/4, Rob Guy teaching grade 5/6. We are still to fill the Art and PE
positions as Ms Heaton has taken a year’s leave at very short notice. Both positions have been
advertised with Art lessons beginning next week, then PE will commencing on 15th February.
Our congratulations to Mrs Cat Medland and her husband James. Their daughter, Elodie
Juliette Medland was born on 29th December. Parents and baby are very happy and healthy.
Mrs Medland has indicated that she would like to return to work in term 3 and will resume part
time as our Art teacher.
Condolences from the school community were sent to Jacky Russell and her family following
the sad passing of her father on the 14th January.

Our students were all dressed smartly in uniform this morning. It is wonderful to see families
embrace our new polo shirt. We continue to work with PSW regarding supply of uniform with the
new logo. For 2016 and 2017 all uniform items with the old logo are perfectly acceptable . Hats
for prep students will be delivered to the school tomorrow and available for sale once they are
received.
I would like to remind parents that if your son or daughter has hair that is shoulder length or
longer, it must be tied back securely.
Receiving the Newsletter
Most parents will know that students are not always reliable notice couriers.
For the past few years we have been encouraging families to read the newsletter online. There are some very good reasons for
this; firstly, it helps the school reduce our paper use and printing costs; secondly, it ensures that you receive the newsletter each
week as a notification can be sent to your email address (if you are registered on the school blog, or to your phone/mobile device
if you are registered with Skoolbag; and thirdly, you are able to view photos in full colour and access any links to relevant
websites that may be included.
You may download the Skoolbag app from the App Store or Google Play. Search for Skoolbag then select Chelsea PS.
All families should register on the school blog and/or Skoolbag to receive the school newsletter. If you are unable to do
so, please write a letter to the school office requesting a paper copy of the newsletter with your name, child’s name and
grade. If you receive a hard copy of the newsletter, it will contain only basic information, such as dates of events and
information sharing. Student work and photos will not be included.
Parent Payments and Voluntary Contributions
Thank you to all the families who have paid for their children’s books. We have purchased many new reading books for students
to use and I know this is welcome news. Yesterday the staff unpacked all the student supplies for the year, quite a mammoth
task. A number of families have also made voluntary contributions to our building fund and for grounds maintenance. These
contributions have really helped us to make some long overdue improvements to the school during January. You will notice that
there has been progress with the missing fence section on Fowler Street. The turf has been vacuumed and a number of dead
and dangerous trees have been removed. The renovations are complete and we have new carpet throughout the admin area.
Our next major project is to complete painting the outside of the S-Wing. This is the building on the corner of Argyle Avenue and
Fowler Street. The roof on the bike shed is being replaced and plans are in place to install the next section of fencing along
Argyle Avenue.
Please consider donating to our voluntary funds, every cent helps us to continuously improve the facilities.
Visiting Michelle and Jan
Jan and I welcome visits from all members of the school community. Please check at the office to see if we are available rather
than coming directly to our offices as we are often completing confidential phone calls or meetings.

Student Safety before and after school
Teachers are rostered on playground duty from 8.45 am to 9.00am, and in the afternoon from 3.30 – 3.45 pm. If your child is
regularly arriving at school earlier than 8.45, or is picked up after 3.45pm, you are encouraged to make use of the City of
Kingston Before and After School Care Program operating from the Multi-Purpose room. Enrolment forms are available from the
school and also from the City of Kingston website. I have been advised by the City of Kingston that they will not accept any
student who has not enrolled for 2016. Please ensure that you have completed the necessary paperwork before sending
your child/ren to Before and After School Care.
At times the school holds family events such as Parent Information Nights out of hours. On these occasions parents are
responsible for the supervision of their children.

We all want our children to be resilient. This talk outlines the
key factors as well as what adults can do to promote this in
kids.
As Andrew describes, resilience is “the happy knack of being able to bungy
jump through the pitfalls of life – to rise above adversity and obstacles.”
