Porta Fidei
Pt. 1
1. The “door of faith” (Acts 14:27) is always open for us, ushering us into the life of communion with God and offering entry into his Church. It is possible to cross that threshold
when the word of God is proclaimed and the heart allows itself to be shaped by transforming grace. To enter through that door is to set out on a journey that lasts a lifetime.
It begins with baptism (cf. Rom 6:4), through which we can address God as Father, and it
ends with the passage through death to eternal life, fruit of the resurrection of the Lord
Jesus, whose will it was, by the gift of the Holy Spirit, to draw those who believe in him
into his own glory (cf. Jn 17:22). To profess faith in the Trinity – Father, Son and Holy
Spirit – is to believe in one God who is Love (cf. 1 Jn 4:8): the Father, who in the fullness
of time sent his Son for our salvation; Jesus Christ, who in the mystery of his death and
resurrection redeemed the world; the Holy Spirit, who leads the Church across the centuries as we await the Lord’s glorious return.
2. Ever since the start of my ministry as Successor of Peter, I have spoken of the need to
rediscover the journey of faith so as to shed ever clearer light on the joy and renewed
enthusiasm of the encounter with Christ. During the homily at the Mass marking the inauguration of my pontificate I said: “The Church as a whole and all her Pastors, like Christ,
must set out to lead people out of the desert, towards the place of life, towards friendship with the Son of God, towards the One who gives us life, and life in abundance.”[1]
It often happens that Christians are more concerned for the social, cultural and political
consequences of their commitment, continuing to think of the faith as a self-evident presupposition for life in society. In reality, not only can this presupposition no longer be
taken for granted, but it is often openly denied.[2] Whereas in the past it was possible
to recognize a unitary cultural matrix, broadly accepted in its appeal to the content of
the faith and the values inspired by it, today this no longer seems to be the case in large
swathes of society, because of a profound crisis of faith that has affected many people.
3. We cannot accept that salt should become tasteless or the light be kept hidden (cf. Mt
5:13-16). The people of today can still experience the need to go to the well, like the
Samaritan woman, in order to hear Jesus, who invites us to believe in him and to draw
upon the source of living water welling up within him (cf. Jn 4:14). We must rediscover a
taste for feeding ourselves on the word of God, faithfully handed down by the Church,
and on the bread of life, offered as sustenance for his disciples (cf. Jn 6:51).

2005): AAS 97 (2005), 710.

Who Do You Say That I Am?
by Fr. Thomas Rosica CEO Salt + Light Catholic Television Network
http://saltandlighttv.org/blog/rosicareflections/the-only-question-that
-matters-a-biblical-reflection-for-the-twelfth-sunday-in-ordinary-timeyear-c!!
!
The second half of Luke’s Gospel is one great pilgrimage
to Jerusalem, the city of destiny. Along the way, Jesus
asks a very important question of his disciples. “Who do
you say that I am?” is the same question asked of every
disciple in every age.
When Jesus asks his disciples of their perception of him,
he asks what people are saying about him. How do they
see his work? Who is he in their minds? Probably taken
aback by the question, the disciples dredge their
memories for overheard remarks, snatches of shared
conversation, opinions circulating in the fishing towns of
the lake area. Jesus himself is aware of some of
this. The replies of the disciples are varied, as are those
of each of us today when Jesus, through someone else’s
lips, asks us the same question, and with increasing
frequency and intensity.
Blessed John Paul II offered this observation at an
evening prayer vigil during World Youth Day in 2000,
“What is the meaning of this dialogue? Why does
Jesus want to know what people think about him?
Why does he want to know what his disciples think
about him? Jesus wants his disciples to become
aware of what is hidden in their own minds and
hearts and to give voice to their conviction. At the
same time, however, he knows that the judgment
they will express will not be theirs alone, because it
will reveal what God has poured into their hearts by
the grace of faith. This is what faith is all about! It is
the response of the rational and free human person
to the word of the living God. The questions that
Jesus asks, the answers given by the Apostles, and
finally by Simon Peter, are a kind of examination on
the maturity of the faith of those who are closest to
Christ.”
Who is this Jesus for us? This is indeed the only question
that really matters.

St. Agnes/St. Vincent de Paul News
Terrapin—a mystery
by T. M. Doran
Dennis Cole and his three best buddies
from childhood gather for a weekend
reunion. On the first night, one of the
men is murdered-or is he?
A professor of engineering by day and a
writer of detective fiction by night, Cole
and the other survivors try to piece together the mysterious fate of their friend. The suspenseful
story moves back and forth between the unfolding reunion
gone bad and childhood events that involved these friends
who grew up on the same street.
Discussion of this mystery with Fr. Patrick in the patio at the
rectory on Tuesday, August 20 at 6:30PM.
The St. Agnes Conference of St. Vincent de
Paul is scheduled to staff the St. Vincent de
Paul Store on Saturday, June 29 from
9:00am– 1:00pm.
Anyone that can volunteer to work that day please contact
Diane Janssen at 494-8337.
Fact: Planned Parenthood sets abortion quotas for its
affiliates.
While abortion proponents sometimes claim they want to
“reduce the need for abortion,” their business models
suggest otherwise. Even as a “nonprofit” organization,
Planned Parenthood looks to drive up the number of
abortions performed because they are lucrative.
Obtain the book on your own. It is available through the
publisher, Ignatius Press, and other online sources.
Call the Parish Office to sign up, 494-2534.
Children’s Scripture
Children’s Scripture will resume in the fall. We
are in need of more leaders. New leaders will
be trained as they respond to our Parish Stewardship Fair in September. During these summer
months please help yourselves to the Growing
with the Gospel Children’s Bulletins located in the bottom rack
of the information center.
Prayer for Religious Liberty*
Almighty God, Father of all nations,
For freedom you have set us free in Christ Jesus
(Gal 5:1).
We praise and bless you for the gift of religious liberty,
The foundation of human rights, justice, and the common good.
Grant to our leaders the wisdom to protect and promote our liberties;
By your grace may we have the courage to defend them, for ourselves
and for all who live in this blessed land.
We ask this through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, our patroness, and in the name of your Son, our Lord Jesus
Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with whom you
live and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
