Previews Inside Out: Why publish this book now?
Randy Correll: One of the motivations for presenting the book
“Designs for Living” is to show that there are four personalities
in addition to Bob Stern who design these houses and have
relationships with their clients.
Grant Marani: The variety of RAMSA houses completed in the
past decade offers a wonderful opportunity to feature the four
RAMSA partners who design houses in a way that hasn’t been
presented before. Although we share a common approach, we
each have our own voice.
PIO: “Designs for Living”—what does that phrase mean in
the context of the homes featured in the book?
Roger Seifter: No matter how large or small our houses are,
or how ambitious or simple they are, our houses are for families,
and they support everyday living as much as any clients’ desire
to build an architectural showcase.
GM: The book illustrates how we’re able to design very different
houses for clients with very different requirements for different
lifestyles. It makes it clear that although there are common
threads that run through all our work—the care we take in
establishing relationships between rooms, for example, or the
way we handle daylight and views—each house caters to the
goals and aspirations of a particular couple or family.
RC: Of course it’s also a riff on the old Noel Coward play “Design
for Living.” We like the reference to swank and sophistication.
PIO: What makes a home livable, in your opinion?
Gary Brewer: Our houses offer a variety of spaces that accommodate all the
variety of life’s events.
PIO: What distinguishes a RAMSA house?

I
f there is any architectural firm equipped to illuminate the monumental
task of connecting contemporary lifestyles to traditional American
aesthetics, it’s AD100 stalwart Robert A.M. Stern Architects (RAMSA). The
Manhattan-based firm—headed by Stern, a noted architect, scholar and dean of
the Yale School of Architecture—has appeared on Architectural Digest’s famous
biennial list seven times since 2002 and has been the recipient of countless
awards. This May, the firm released “Designs for Living” (The Monacelli Press)
covering 15 of its houses from coast to coast over the past 10 years. Although
the book features houses far from the waterfront, many of the residences are set
along the shore, giving readers a look inside a privileged life on the water. A
sophisticated clapboard cottage in sleepy Seaside, Florida; an Old World
Mediterranean set on the bluffs overlooking the California Pacific; and a cheery
Shingle Style home in Westport, Connecticut with panoramic views of Long
Island Sound all point to the depth with which the firm explores context and
—above all else— modern living.
Previews® Inside Out, in collaboration with Homes & Estates magazine,
recently spoke with the four partners behind these homes: Roger H. Seifter,
Randy L. Correll, Grant F. Marani, and Gary L. Brewer. Below is an excerpt of
the conversation.
GB: Beyond careful planning and passionate, exacting attention to detail,
there’s our ability to interpret historical styles creatively, rather than blandly
reproducing older houses.
RC: Our houses have personality. Our designs are narratives; each house tells
a story, both about how it fits into its surroundings and about the people who
live there, both the rituals of their daily lives and, frequently, their penchant for
entertaining.
PIO: How important are the “felt” aspects of design—that is, the way
a house “feels”?
GB: We design our houses to capture a sense of place and more importantly,
to support our clients’ lifestyles. By looking at earlier houses with our clients,
and showing them models and drawings, we’re able to create an appropriate
ambience.
RC: Our houses feel like your home, not just anyone’s home.
RS: And importantly, your home and not your architect’s home.
