and three sons to an enormous home
nestled within the pristine hills of northern Virginia. As Evan prepares for his
first day on the job, the casually spiritual politico offers a prayer to God to
“change the world”. Little does he know
that The Man upstairs has big plans for

congressman’s life becomes officially
turned upside down. From mysterious
deliveries of ancient tools and large parcels of wood to curious appearances of
birds of every feather and animals of all
shapes and sizes. His descent into comic confusion culminates with a visit from
a tall stranger claiming to be God who
has one simple, albeit ludicrous, command: Evan must build an ark to prepare his friends and family for a mighty

most extreme music and dance performance activities in the world.
He has the near-impossible task of
mastering a musical and dance performance in just one week. Jamie
confronts what might be his most
formidable challenge yet – the Japanese three-string shamisen guitar. The shamisen itself is difficult
enough but Jamie must learn to play

Enlightening the Nan River:
Long Boat Races
After the rainy season, residents
along the Nan River take a break
from their chores and celebrate
the high tide with boat races. The
practice has become widespread
and turned into a great tradition
on the river. The boat race reflects
the simple joy in the lifestyle of villagers who live by the headwaters of
the Nan River. The rousing rhythm
on the Nan River, created by forceful dashes of the long boats with figureheads such as the Great Serpent,
propelled by the strength of race
crews from each community and
village, make up an exciting sight for
enthralled onlookers watching on
both banks of the Nan River.

AUTUMN
New York
In four corners of the globe, in the
four seasons, four outstanding
violinists guide us on an extraordinary journey through their four
distinct homelands.
From the springtime blossoms of
Japan, into the blistering heat and
thunderstorms of an Australian
summer; from a joyful autumn in
New York, to the unforgiving cold
and human warmth of a Finnish
winter.
The resonant and much-loved music of Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four
Seasons and the timeless stories
they tell, form the backbone to
this bold and engaging celebration
of friendship, homeland and the
cycles of life.
AUTUMN/New York
As Autumn dresses New York with her vibrant colours, a group of friends
– most well-known musicians – reunite at the Barney Greengrass delicatessen, an old haunt on the Upper West Side. Violinist, Cho-Liang “Jimmy”
Lin, a performer of wonderful spirit, is the ring leader of this motley group,
a rich cultural melting pot of musicians who were either born here, or
chose to make New York their home many years ago. Jimmy’s own story, of
his journey to New York from Taiwan, to achieve his childhood dream of
attending the famed Juilliard School, mirrors the ambition and drive of the
city itself.
Autumn/New York is presented on
intercontinental flights to USA in
September and October.

Go! Sudoku!
Sudoku is the puzzle phenomenon
from Japan, a game that looks like
a math problem, but is in fact a
twisting puzzler. The rules are simple: start with a grid consisting of
nine three-by-three squares in which
some of the numbers are already supplied. Fill in the blank squares so that
each column, row, and three-by-three
grid contains a number from 1 to 9
with none repeated.

NHL 07 puts you in total command
with a revolutionary new Skill Stick
system. Never take your hands off
the analogue sticks as you take
complete control of all skating on
the left, and – for the first time
in a hockey videogame – passing will use an intuitive motion
on the right analogue stick to execute with precision.

Introducing the Business Class seat
in the Airbus A340-300
MAKE YOURSELF COMFORTABLE
RELAX YOUR FEET
As soon as the plane has reached
cruising altitude, give your legs a
brake! The legrest and footplate
can be used for additional comfort
with the seat in any position. Pull
the left lever under your right knee
to raise the legrest. The footplate
can be folded up and down
manually. Pull the right lever under
your knee to release the footplate
and push it further away.
On the first row, press
the button on the centre
console to release the TV
screen, after the fasten
safety belt sign has been
switched off.
PLUG IN FOR ENTERTAINMENT
The seat is equipped with a power
socket for your computer, which
may be used when the fasten safety
belt sign is switched off. You may
borrow an adapter from the crew.
To release the handset, press on the
arrow at the end of the handset. To
put the handset back, pull out the
cord slightly and it will rewind.
In the armrest there is also a socket
for your noise reduction headset,
which the crew will hand to you in
the beginning of the flight.
READING LIGHT
The reading light is turned
on and off when you
press the button on the
lamp.
HEAD SUPPORT
You can adjust the headrest manually. Shift it up and down
to suit your height. Tilt it forward if you need more support
when reading or working, and pull the wings forward to
support your head when sleeping.

DURING TAKEOFF AND LANDING
During takeoff and landing the seat has to be in the upright position. All
carry-on baggage has to be placed in the overhead lockers, not under the
seat in front of you or under your own seat, where it might get trapped and
prevent your seat from working when you stretch out the seat.
LEAN BACK AND RELAX
Find the best position to make your journey enjoyable by
raising the legrest and lowering your seat as far as you
prefer.
The seat can easily be adjusted to different positions
during the flight. Press the button to lower the seat. The
movement will stop automatically when you release the
button. You can sit upright to work and eat, relax down
to watch the TV screen, or stretch out in full length or on
your side for sleep. Please keep your
safety belt fastened when you adjust the seat,
otherwise the belt might stop your
seat from working.
SLEEP TIGHT
For a good night’s sleep, raise the legrest and lower your
seat to a position that feels the most comfortable. If you
leave the footwell light on, it is easier to see where you step,
if you get up during the night.
Button to switch on the footwell light.
TIME FOR DINING
To enjoy our delicious meal, raise your
seat to the upright position and pull out
the table. Your table is located in the
armrest. Press the button to release the
table and pull it out. The table can be
moved forwards and backwards, and it
can be rotated to the side so that you can
get up from your seat.
ADDITIONAL COMFORT
You can add lumbar support
for additional back comfort.
Lean forward and press the button
to inflate the lumbar support. Press
the same button
to deflate it.

A daring diamond heist takes
place. The loot is smuggled
abroad to Dubai. The local crime
syndicate in Dubai wants the loot
for themselves, as do the criminals. But all the criminal masterminds have not planned for the
shenanigans of Raja, who sets
out to search for the diamonds to
please his lover’s uncle. His lady
love is none other than the charming Tina and her uncle is the supposed master brain, Chaubey. A
self-styled driver, who ranks his
driving skills as better than those
of Schumacher, helps the trio to
flee in time, but only to land them
in hotter water than before. Raja
has no other option than to rope
in Munna, a professional wrestler
and his agent Luckee to find the diamonds. Now with all of them caught
up together, and obviously the evident brains of uncle Chaubey where
intelligence is an understatement, this stylish robbery turns into a fun
frolicking, knockout comedy.

Kristie visits the Googleplex – the

From Google, Kristie travels just

we see how the company’s innovative efforts to be more environmentally friendly are not only good for
the planet, but great for the bottom

Despite advances in architectural office design, the reality for most

Cipriani Family – From Harry’s
Bar To “Selling A Lifestyle”
Monita Rajpal meets Arrigo Cipriani in Venice, to trace the roots of the
family’s hospitality dynasty. He is the
son of Giuseppe Cipriani, the man
who began it all with the famous Harry’s bar (1931) and later the Cipriani
Hotel (no longer owned by the family). The bar is still in the Cipriani stable
and as Monita finds, is just a gondola ride away Harry’s Dolci. The family
has branched out to serviced apartment developments, a drive spearheaded by Giuseppe’s grandson, also Giuseppe Cipriani. He and his sister Giovanna, also heavily involved in
the family projects, take Art of Life
through 55 Wall Street, as the finishing touches are put on the luxury, fully
serviced apartments and the Club. A
similar venture in Miami is being done
in partnership with businessman and
F1 luminary, Flavio Briatore. So, no
matter when you want, or what you
want, perhaps a famous Cipriani Bellini, it’s simply a phone call away.
Off The Beaten Track –
Luxury Caves In Turkey
Linzie Janis travels to Cappadocia,
in Turkey’s Nevsehir province. She’s
there to visit Yunak Evleri, originally caves that were hollowed out by
hand in ancient times, and now
a luxury hotel. In the construction process, thousands of tractor
loads of rubble had to be removed,
but the original shapes of the cave
rooms have been preserved. The
hotel sits within the southern side
of a large cliff, high above the town
– and is best viewed by hot air balloon. The hotel’s name means “Well
Houses”, which is also the name of
this part of the town. Before the site
was converted into an hotel, people
lived here without running water,
heating or modern comforts. Not
so today. As Linzie finds, the life of
a modern-day cave dweller is quite
luxurious.

GLOBAL CHALLENGES
On this edition of Global Challenges the
education-on-demand technology opens
new avenues of learning.
Nung-pai in North-East Thailand,
with a population of 2,000, is located in the middle of nowhere but this
place has got some of the most advanced technology in the world.
There is a high-tec revolution taking
place in this rural community. It’s
all based in a local house that has
been converted into a sort of cyber
one-stop shop, giving villagers their
first taste of the world-wide web,
selling cheap PCs and providing
new unique online education facilities, all in a community where most
homes don’t even have telephone
lines. It’s the brainchild of Australian born broadband engineer, John
Hawker, who is trying to bring technology to some of Asia’s most remote communities, keeping costs
down by using a low-toll satellite
system called I.P. Star.
China’s half million schools all look
very much like the one in Gawdo
province, where youngsters at rickety wooden desks are memorizing
their lessons word for word. But
with the government keen to transform China into a superpower, it’s
come up with a plan. Hong Kong’s
Logas Academy is considered an innovator in the education field and
one of several schools taking part in
a new research project, monitored
by Beijing. The school is testing digital whiteboards, one of many new
technologies that Chinese officials
hope will shake up China’s rigid education systems.
At M.I.T, the Maschuettes Institute
of Technology, they have everything
from science down to fine art. The
schools annual operating budget is
a staggering $2 billion dollars. It’s
understandable then that the institute attracts some of science’s great
minds. It boosts 61 noble prize winners, in its history, 12 of whom are
currently on staff. For students just
getting in the door is an achievement. To walk these halls they need
to be academically brilliant and financially fortified if not mortified.
Tuition nearly costs $30,000 a year.
Add bed, board and books and
you’re looking at $40,000. That’s
not uncommon these days but it’s
hard to stomach for people who
feel education should be more accessible.

MAINSAIL
Olympic Sailing
This month’s MainSail is all about
Olympic sailing, as the push to
qualify for Beijing 2008 intensifies.
Many top Olympians gathered on
the Cote d’Azur for the 39th French
Sailing Week. This is one of the last
big events for the Olympic classes on the road to qualification and
over a thousand competitors from
50 different countries took part – including MainSail presenter, Shirley
Robertson.
Team Shirley Robertson
Shirley Robertson is a two-time Olympic sailing gold medallist. She
wants to make it a hat-trick at Beijing, but to do that, she first needs to
qualify, and she has serious competition. After Athens, she split from
her two former crew members, who
have now formed their own team.
While they have been in full training mode for two years, Robertson
has given birth to twins and began
her own campaign later than expected. MainSail goes behind the
scenes of her Olympic campaign, as
she strives to make it to the world’s
greatest sporting event.
39th French Sailing week
The light conditions on the Cote
d’Azur should provide valuable experience for the sailing venue in China, Qingdao. MainSail speaks to the
General Manager for French Sailing
Week, Bernard Bonneau about the
importance of this event for all the
sailors.
Velux Five Oceans
A round-up of the solo round the
world race, just won by Swiss sailor
Bernard Stamm, who led all the way
from the start in Bilbao. Despite the
lack of competition, the race threw
up great drama, including a midsea rescue and the successful finish of Robin Knox Johnston who
came third at the age of 68, almost
forty years after becoming the first
man ever to sail non-stop around
the world. His daily e-mails from his
boat Saga Insurance harked back
to a bygone era of sailing, as he
complained about his new-fangled
equipment and dwelt on the joys of
his whisky and claret.
Hagara and Steinacher
Like Shirley Robertson, Austria’s Roman Hagara and Hans-Peter Steinacher are double Olympic gold medalists from the Sydney and Athens
Games in the Tornado Class. MainSail interviews Hagara and Steinacher and their long-standing coach
Georg Fundak, who is also an experienced Olympian.

Biography
Avril Lavigne is a girl who knows what she wants. And
when it came to writing her eagerly awaited third album, The Best Damn Thing, she had one very clear
goal in mind: To make it fun. While touring in 2004
for her last album, Under My Skin, which sold more
than 8 million copies worldwide, the Canadian-born
punk-pop dynamo found that her favorite songs to
play were the faster, more up-tempo songs—so she resolved to make a record that captured the kind of highspirited, full-throttle energy that she loved to unleash
on-stage.
The Best Damn Thing is brimming with gutsy
guitar riffs, instantaneously catchy sing-along
party-starting choruses, power pop punk, and
rebellious rock ’n’ roll attitude. It’s a marked
departure from the darker, more introspective
tone of Under My Skin—and on tracks such
as the defiant, riotous, kiss-off-to-a-cheatingboyfriend “Everything Back But You,” Avril
took pleasure in creating scenarios for her lyrics that weren’t, as she says, “straight out of
my diary.” The result is a collection of songs
that reveal just how far she’s evolved as a songwriter and singer, from the sassy, empowering “I Can Do Better” (one of Avril’s personal favorites) to the irrepressible first single
“Girlfriend”—which unexpectedly combines a
hip-hop beat with beefy power chords, handclaps, and a chanted girl-group-style chorus
with a punk rock twist—to the emotional ballad “Keep Holding On,” which she wrote at the
request of 20th Century Fox for the studio’s
fantasy/adventure film Eragon.
As an artist with a keen and well-trained ear for
Avril Lavigne
powerful, magnetic pop melodies, Avril was
intensely involved in every aspect of The Best
Damn Thing’s creation: From being fiercely independent while writing her own songs
(“I didn’t have an A&R guy on this record,”
she emphasizes. “I knew exactly how I wanted it to sound”), to choosing her producers
and musical collaborators, to obsessively going back and tweaking guitar tones and drumbeats in the studio, she worked hard to ensure that it would be her best record yet. The
album features the production skills of Butch
Walker (who has also produced The Donnas,
American Hi-Fi, and Avril’s second album,
Under My Skin), Dr. Luke (Pink, Lady Sovereign), Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical
Romance, Goo Goo Dolls), and her husband
Deryck Whibley (from Sum 41). The process
turned out to be a blast: “I didn’t know making
a record could be so fun,” she says. She was eager to work with her good friend Butch again,
as she says, “What’s great about Butch is that
he’s a talented artist as well as being an incredible producer.” And about collaborating with
Dr. Luke, she adds, “Luke and I had a really
good connection and chemistry.”
The relaxed atmosphere in the studio comes
across in the songs themselves—Avril’s laughter rings out in “I Can Do Better,” and in “Girlfriend” you can hear her, she says, “playing a
beer bottle” (by blowing into it) in the last few
choruses. Four of the songs on The Best Damn
Thing—“Innocence,” “Hot, “One of Those
Girls,” and “Contagious”—were co-written
with Avril’s former bandmate Evan Taubenfeld.
“Evan is one of my best friends in the world,”
38
she says, affectionately. “He’s been with me
since day one”.
Of course, all of the spiky, buoyant energy that
drives the album will come to life in the live
show that Avril is planning for her tour later
this year—she has assembled a new band, and
is even bringing along two dancers (“I’m doing
choreographed dancing for the first time ever,”
she grins. “It’s going to be such a blast”).
A great deal has happened in Avril Lavigne’s life
since she released her debut album, Let Go, in
2002, when she was 17 years old. That album
snagged 8 Grammy nominations and four Juno
Awards (including Album of the Year and New
Artist of the Year), spawned the anthemic hit
singles “Complicated,” “Sk8ter Boy,” and “I’m
With You,” and sold more than 16 million copies world-wide. Under My Skin cemented the
Napanee, Ontario native’s superstardom, entering U.S., Canadian, and U.K. charts at #1,
unleashing smash singles “Don’t Tell Me” and
“My Happy Ending,” and collecting three more
Juno Awards along the way.
In 2006, Avril married Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley
and branched out into acting, appearing in Richard Linklater’s Fast Food Nation and lending
her voice to Dreamworks’ animated film Over
the Hedge. She may be a bit more sophisticated these days, but she’s still peerless, and still
fearless. The Best Damn Thing is Avril Lavigne
at a new stage in her life; she’s passed through
the shadows of teen angst and emerged in a
spotlight, ready to have fun and rock out and
yes, even dance. It is, just as she intended, the
best damn thing she’s ever done.
