YOUTH AND COMMUNITY VOICES
EDUCATOR WORKSHOP SERIES
COURSE INFORMATION
Youth and Community Voices Educator Workshop Series
The Educational Video Center (EVC) has been working with NYC youth for over 30 years to produce documentary films on topics such
as youth depression; gender and body image; bullying; drug and alcohol abuse; juvenile justice and police-youth relations. EVC films
have proven to be particularly effective in schools because they are produced by NYC youth, who bring their faces, voices and insider's
perspective into classrooms to spark discussion and learning. This course provides participants with tools and techniques to employ
culturally responsive teaching practices that meet the diverse needs of their students. Each workshop will focus on a critical theme or
problem in students' lives and will include discussion of an EVC film with an expert in the field and an EVC youth producer. The second
half of each workshop will be dedicated to developing student-led lessons and activities to be implemented at participants’ school. As
participants are guided through some of the journaling, active viewing and discussion activities, they will experience the program just
as their students will, leaving the workshops fully prepared to facilitate the activities and projects with their students.
