Father Harry’s “Buseness”
I continue to feel blessed to be able to serve as pastor
of St. Leo the Great Parish. I am edified by the
commitment and generosity of so many people. These
people enable us to “offer inspiring and prayerful
worship experiences, develop and maintain life-long
religious education for youth and adults, provide loving
service to those in need and celebrate the great events
in the life of the parish and of our parish families.” (St.
Leo Mission Statement). All of this parish activity happens because of the
commitment and involvement of many, many people and the financial
support of our generous parishioners. I know that many people sacrifice
week by week and month by month to provide both financial support,
and time and energy in so many ministries. Thank you for all of the ways
you support our mission, large or small.
Like most parishes, we continue to run a little short in our financial
support, compared to our budgeted needs. So far since July 1 this year,
we are behind in our budgeted income by $66,698.04. There are a
couple of ways to look at this. One could say that people are not
generous enough in their support and maybe even point the finger at
other individuals or groups. While there might be some merit in that
approach, it is not very fruitful. I would like to think that our financial
position says that we are doing the most we can with the resources we
have as a parish and that we continue to challenge ourselves to become
even better stewards of the resources we have.
I believe that you are partners with me in fulfilling the mission of St. Leo
Parish. I believe that you are willing to sacrifice to support that mission.
Consequently, I ask you to do your part to help us fulfill our mission. For
many years St. Leo Parish has a track record of increased giving as the
calendar year draws to a close. For some, this is a good time to catch up
for missed giving during the summer or fall months. For others this is
possible when they see their year end business position. For others still it
is done as they make end of year tax considerations, for regular income
tax purposes or for required distributions from IRA account (if they are
more than 701/2 years old). For others, it might reflect a growth in faith
and the realization that they should be giving more in relation to the
blessings they have received.
I realize that some have been adversely affected by the ongoing
recession. At the same time, I know that the Omaha community has fared
better than most parts of the country during these times. As we draw to
the end of this year, I urge all of you to do what you can to continue
your support of the mission of St. Leo the Great Parish.

Happy Thanksgiving! On Thanksgiving, we will celebrate Mass at
9:00 am. There is a long tradition of also remembering the poor as we
give thanks. In that spirit, we will have a special collection at the
Thanksgiving Day Mass for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Contributions
are used to respond to the needs of the poor in our local community. I
wish you and your family a very Blessed Thanksgiving.

St. Leo Christmas Project for
St. Augustine Indian Mission
Kicks off Next Weekend.
This week’s focus:
Music in Catholic Worship
Question for Children, Youth
and Adults:
How do I actively
participate in the Music at
Mass?
This year, our St. Leo Christmas Project will be assisting the St.
Augustine Indian Mission in Winnebago, NE. Beginning November 26
& 27, we will have “ornament tags” on a tree in the social hall representing items needed by the Mission.
Some tags denote items such as diapers, paper towels, & disinfectant
wipes that need to be brought to the St. Leo Church Social Hall.
Other tags request a donation to purchase
Physical Education and Art supplies which the
school urgently needs. Saint Augustine Indian
Mission will use the donations to purchase the
items from a discount school supply store.
Please donate cash or write your check
payable to St. Augustine Indian Mission. Bring
your donation along with the “ornament tag”
to the parish office for Fr. Dave Korth to pick

donations, Fr. Dave Korth’s concert, our youth summer mission trips,
and our Christmas project.
Generations of Faith News
Our Generations of Faith theme will change beginning
on November 26 and 27 with the First Sunday of Advent. The new theme is, "Celebrate the Mass.” We
look forward to learning more about the Mass during
the months ahead.
May their souls and the souls of
the faithful departed, through the
mercy of God, rest in peace.

Religious Formation
This year, for our Large Group Project in Religious
Education, we are collecting donations for the Missions of
Papua New Guinea. This is a
great opportunity for our youth to
learn about another country on the
other side of the world. Our
collection baskets we pass every
weekend Mass were made by the
people in PNG. We are hoping to
be able to help some of the schools
around Madang, PNG with supplies,
since many schools have no extra
funds. If you feel that you would like
to donate money, just send it to St.
Leo or drop it by the front office. Checks can be made out to "St. Leo"
with "PNG Missions" written on the memo line. Thanks to all who have
contributed!

Good News from St. Pius X/St. Leo School
We are pleased to announce the names of the 8th grade students who have
made Honor Roll for the first quarter of this school year. According to the Family
Handbook, "if the average of all subjects is 94.5% or above and there are no N's
or U's in general conduct, the student will be placed on the First Honor Roll for the
quarter. If the average of all of these subjects is 89.5% to 94.4% and there are
no N's or U's in general conduct, the student will be placed on the Second Honor
Roll for the quarter. Students on either Honor Roll receive a special certificate of
Academic Achievement in their report card each quarter they are on the Honor
Roll." We are thrilled to say that 84% of our 8th grade students made the Honor
Roll for the first quarter. In the 8th grade, 40% of students earned a place on the
First Honor Roll and 44% on the Second Honor Roll. This is outstanding for the 8th
grade students! The 8th grade Honor Roll students are as follows.
First Honors:
Connor Albin, Natalie Ashbrook, James Brennan, Megan Brohman, Matthew
Brooks, Emily Cheloha, Kellyn Daly, Delaney Freese, Elizabeth Geske, Grace
Goaley, Anna Goeman, Madison Golden, Isabella Herrera, Kassandra Hodgen,
Alex Homan, Hannah Johnson, Brandon Kreikemeier, Elizabeth Loschen, Elliana

Isabel Tine, Mary Townley, Chloe Trecek, Jana Tucker, Connor Tucker, Emily
Witzenburg, Alexandra Zacharias and Allison Zuerlein.
Second Honors:
Colton Amburn, Bradford Ashby II, Nathan Boomsma, Julia Boynton, Jack Braswell,
Nicolas Crinklaw, Jeremy Davis, Leo Ehlers, Evan English, Julia Ervin, Ciera Farrens,
Michael Franklin, Connor Gill, Owen Godberson, Katelyn Grund, Katelyn Harr,

Jadlowski, Kaela Kelly, Kyle Kirby, Emily Kudlacek, Audrey Lipari, Clare Longo,
Emily McKenna, Kaitlyn McKenna, Emily Merrill, Robert Morgensen, Nicholas
Pavel, Bailey Reinders, Anna Reynolds, Mairin Rochford, Spencer Rohlfs, Lenora
Stewart/Spahn, John Timmerman, Jackson Tripp, Elisabet Tucker, Colleen Vogel,
Ethan Walz, Sam Watson, Margaret White, Angela Whitney and Brooks Wilson.
From the list of honor roll students you can see that many of our 8th graders are
studying very hard and keeping their behavior in check! We also know that there
are many other 8th graders who are working hard and behaving as they should,
but just can’t quite make the honor roll. We also salute these students! Our thanks
to all students for their hard work and to their parents for the wonderful support
they provide to their children. It takes everyone working together, the students,
their parents and the teachers to succeed and do well academically in school.
Congratulations to all!
A Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving to All from the

The Mission Continues
Beginning next week, some of what
we say at Mass is going to change.
In fact, it will change enough that we
are not going to say everything
100% correctly the first time
through, and that’s okay! In time, will
learn these new words, and maybe
someday memorize them again.
However, if all we do during this
time of change is learn new words,
then we have failed in this endeavor
set forth by Bl. John Paul II back in
the year 2000. This change is not
about new words, but rather a
renewal of our faith by digging
deeper into our understanding of
what this ritualistic celebration is all
about. In other words, we have
been preparing for next weekend
not by dwelling on what the word
“consubstantial” means and why it
has now been inserted into the
Creed, but by looking at why we
say the Creed in the first place and
what it means for us as Catholic
Christians to make that proclamation
week after week. We have been
preparing ourselves to dig deeper
into the Liturgy so that we don’t just
come to Mass, but so that we may
“live” the Mass. You might ask
yourself, “how do we do possibly
accomplish this?” You could pick up
a “Living the Mass” book to take a
closer look at the various elements
of Mass and how they relate to your
daily life, or sign up for the five
week course, A Biblical Walk
Through the Mass, or continue
reading this bulletin article each
week, or read the weekly scripture
readings before you come to
Mass…. AHHHHH!!! Here at Leo’s,
we are offering a plethora of
resources to learn more, all which
can be found online at:
www.stleo.net/mass.php
…however, the one thing that you
MUST do in order for this to work is
to open up your heart and listen.
God is here, and He wants to
transform our lives. We have been
given the gift of the Liturgy. I invite
you to take this journey with me and
allow God to speak to us and to
work his grace through our lives.

Our Lord Jesus Christ the King
Our notions of royalty tend to
be formed from two sources: fairy
tales and modern day royals. Fairy
tales give us images like Prince
Charming, the wicked queen, King
Midas, etc. These people are either
very good or very bad. Some
others are simply clueless, like the
emperor who had no clothes. We
often view modern day royals as
rich and maybe a bit spoiled. The
royal wedding earlier this year
was the talk of fashion magazines
and inspiration of dress designers.
And while it gave the British people
an additional holiday, its effect on
the populace was probably not
more than a few extra pints at the
pub.
How different our modern
notions of royal leadership are
from the biblical understanding of
kingship. In the Hebrew Bible, the
king is the one responsible for the
whole people. He is the Lord's
anointed and holds sovereignty in
the name of the Lord. The king is to
rule justly and to judge righteously
for the land's afflicted. He is not to
use his position for his own
aggrandizement or profit. When
the king neglects the widows and
orphans and fails to protect the
downtrodden then God's just
punishment is meted out to the king.
We see this again and again in the
prophetic books of the Old
Testament and in the theology that
is present in the Books of Kings.
Jesus is the fulfillment of
biblical kingship. He is the king par
excellence who fulfills completely
the duties and responsibilities of
the king. But there is the twist
provided by today's Gospel: the
duties are not those of Jesus alone.
All who are baptized in his name,
who have been anointed as
members of the priestly, prophetic,
and royal people of God, have the
same responsibilities as the king.
We are to feed the hungry, give
drink to the thirsty, and welcome
the stranger. All of the royal duties
are also ours.
