WORD CLOUD: ROMNEY’S IOWA SPEECH

Mitt Romney’s marketing stratgey is clear in this word cloud of his speech following Tuesday’s Iowa Caucus.
Commonly used words are displayed. The more frequent the word, the larger it appears.

The best local news coverage in the area is up
front in the expanded A section, plus more
nation/world news and opinion commentary.
Also included are obituaries and the local
weather forecast for the day and week ahead.
JUST
A THOUGHT
Your strongest opinions,
in 75 words or less.
Drug tests for welfare
recipients? Sure, but…
I have no problem drug
testing anyone that receives
taxpayers money. I fully
support it. People living
off public funds should
be accountable. Why
blindly allocate tax money
to the selfish or morally
bankrupt? Why finance social
destruction?
However, this is to
include the CEO’s of all the
corporations that receive
tax free or nearly tax free
status, politicians that live
off of the people’s money,
and so on. These test should
include alcohol use, tobacco
use, prescription drug abuse,
illegal drug use. Then it will
be fair.

Results of yesterday’s

in the job creators of tomorrow.
78.16%
SAME: Don’t cut K-12 funding,
but schools should make do with
what they have.
13.65%
LESS: Our K-12 spending is

little to show for it.

a
Getting out of debt is never more
important than your marriage.
But families go through all kinds
of stuff, and one of those things is
cleaning up messes they have made.
It’s not always fun, but there is a
price to pay if you want to win with
your money or anything else.
It sounds to me like your husband
has gone gazelle-intense about
getting out of debt, and in the
process may have left you behind a
little bit. I don’t recommend that.
He probably needs to take some
time to come back and emotionally
reconnect with you.
And I’m sure some good, oldfashioned back rubs and words of
encouragement from you are in
order.
Your man could use them if he’s
been working two jobs.
But there’s plenty of time for
snuggling and stuff later.

“There’s always a fly in the
ointment,” Devellano said. “It’s
going to be tougher to make the
playoffs. You got to be in the
top four of eight. Some good
teams will miss the playoffs.
But (this format) was a nobrainer for us.”
Holland said it’s not a big
issue.
“The league has parity,” Holland said. “It doesn’t matter if
you’re in a seven- or eight-team
division. It’s a lot better than
the situation we had.
“At the end of the day, every
team had to give a little bit.
We’d love to have been in the
Eastern Conference, but this
set-up made everyone happy.
It’s as good as we can get.”
A two-thirds vote of the 30
teams was needed for any proposal to pass, and four clubs reportedly voted against it. Many
current Western Conference
teams did not want Detroit
to move east because the Red
Wings fill their arenas.

ast year, as my first
of four kids entered
kindergarten, the
nostalgia l abruptly ended
as we kicked his education
experience into high gear. In
that first day, he was off!
Zoophonics, addition,
reading ... yup, my baby was
on the fast track to a quality
education, and as parents,
my husband and I were his
partners.
This is the education
experience every child should
have. Unfortunately, many
students all over the state are
trapped in failing schools that
are not adequately preparing
them for the workforce.
Additionally, there are
quality schools that simply do
not meet the needs of every
child or their parents’ desires.
For these reasons, I
wholeheartedly believe the
state should ensure parents
have many options to provide
their children with an
education that will prepare
them for success.
The Michigan House of
Representatives is debating
an important piece of
legislation that will provide
additional choices.
SB 618 would lift the
arbitrary cap on charter
schools authorized by the
universities, promoting
innovation and creating
competition in education.
For 12 years, Michigan has
been at its cap for opening
new charter public schools. In
addition, over 70 percent of
charter schools statewide
have waiting lists — which
impacts up to 20,000 families.
This demonstrates to me
that there is a
tremendous
demand
by parents
for more

I want to
dispel the
myth that
lisa
charters are the

Wild West of
education, with no regulation
or accountability.
According to the Michigan
Department of Education,
charter schools must comply
with the same state and
federal rules as traditional
public schools, as well as
additional requirements from
their authorizer.
SB 618 raises academic
standards by strengthening
accountability on
academic performance;
fiscal management; and
transparency for schools,
operators, and authorizers.
For the first time in state
law, improved academic
achievement for all groups
of students is the most
important factor for charter
contract renewal.
I refuse to let this bill
become a debate about
traditional public education
versus charters. I firmly
support quality education of
all types.
Any education policy that
I consider will always have
me asking first: what is best

additional schools are in high
demand to meet the needs of
students and families.
My sister, Krista, is a classic
example of educational
freedom and choice.
A former public school
teacher who is now a stay-athome mom, she uses multiple
options to ensure the best
course for each of her kids.
Krista sends one of my
nephews to a charter school
and homeschools another.
Whether or not you would do
the same, it’s undeniable that
she has the ability to choose
for each child.
Unfortunately, because of
the charter cap, many other
parents don’t have the same
opportunity as my sister.
I support SB 618 to
empower those parents
and to make sure kids have

Decision to expand

I
t strikes me as odd that
leaders in Lansing herald
the virtues of data-driven
decision making but press
forward with legislation like
Senate Bills 618 and 619. SB
618 lifts the cap on universityauthorized charters in
the state and allows for
unfettered expansion in a
time when lawmakers urge
consolidation.
Proponents speak of the
virtues of successful charter
schools, but what’s not
mentioned is the fact that
many of these schools are on
the Michigan Department
of Education’s Persistently
Lowest Achieving list.
Of those schools identified
as persistently low achieving,
nearly one-third of them are
charter schools.
Further, nearly one-third of
all charter schools are in the
bottom 20 percent in terms of
top-to-bottom rankings.
If one were to make
a data-driven decision,
logic would dictate that
there needs to be a quality
standard for charter schools
to expand.
