The workshop was conducted
on 2-3 August 2013 through
the DLSU Office of the Vice
Chancellor Office for Research
and Innovation Challenge
Grant Project, University
Research Coordination
Office, and the DLSU Center
for Natural Science and
Environmental Research.
In the workshop, aside from
training, Salikneta Farm
was given an Air Weather
Observation System (AWOS)
kit, which was subsequently
installed in the farm for
actual use. Through the
AWOS kit, weather observation and data collection will
be done with the help of
Salikneta students.
Meteorological variables to
be measured by students
using AWOS include: temperature, relative humidity,
wind speed and direction,
and rainfall observation and
historical data. Currently,
there are 40 AWOS stations
around the country. Mr.
Aniñon was joined by Mr.
Electro Balbuena, first year
BS Agriculture student and
holder of National Certificates 1 and 2 in Computer
from TESDA.
DLSAU joins renewed call for transparency,
accountability in government
In the late 1950’s The Furrows was the name of the official
student publication of the Araneta Institute of Agriculture (AIA).
This institution was first known as AIA when it started as an
agricultural school in 1946. The concept of The Furrows was
adopted once more in 2002 when Gregorio Araneta University
Foundation (GAUF) became a full-fledged member of the
Lasallian Family; and henceforth, ‘twas called the DE LA SALLEARANETA UNIVERSITY. Since the turnover up to school year
2005-2006, it became the official institutional newsletter.
Today, De La Salle Araneta University, now enriched with the
heritage of Lasallian schools and a partnership with a 334-year
old educational tradition that has its roots in Rheims, France,
has recreated and revived The Furrows, as it informs its
collaborators and stakeholders through its regular publication
and dissemination.

Lasallian community in Luneta for the
#MillionPeopleMarch, a mass action
calling for the abolition of the Priority
Development Assistance Fund (PDAF)
and a serious investigation on the alleged multi-billion pesos PDAF scam.

Korean Institutions strengthen ties with DLSAU
De La Salle Araneta University strengthened its external linkages anew
with new partnerships with two more Korean educational institutions.
On July 27, 2013 a MOA was signed to intensify the partnership between
our community and Ansanhak Research Institute Foundation in carrying
out the “Globalism and Multiculturalism Leadership Program.” Dr. Lee
Pil-Sang, donated P40,000 to the DLSAU’s scholarship program.
On August 2, 2013 Daegu Health College (DHC) through Dr. Kim Kyong
Yong, DHC International Relations Center Director, met with Mr.
Christopher Polanco, DLSAU Chancellor. DHC and DLSAU entered into
a Memorandum of Understanding for the promotion of exchanges
of information and resources and other forms of cooperation and
project-collaboration.

Dear Lasallians,
The creation of De La Salle Araneta University as a
GREAT university is hinged on a number of important
elements.
•Centrality of STUDENTS
as our focus for this educational enterprise
•A highly COMPETENT faculty
•Abundant RESOURCE
(finance, infrastructure, facilities and spirituality)
•GOVERNANCE that puts premium to the fulfillment
of the VISION-MISSION
We have all these elements. Will we make the grade?

8 DLSAU students in the 1st Student Media Congress
Eight DLSAU students from TINIG Student Publications Office, along with the DLSAU’s Office of
Marketing and Communications, attended the
first Student Media Congress on 26-27 July 2013,
organized by the De La Salle University Student
Media Office in partnership with DLSU Culture
& Arts Office, and DLS-CSB Student Publications
Office.
Over a thousand delegates from all over the
Philippines attended this two-day Congress on
July 26-27, 2013. With the theme Exploring
Media Breakthroughs, the Congress was a
two-day event that included workshops and
talks on the different potentials of media.
Part of the Congress’ objectives was to gather
student media practitioners, campus journalists, and communicators in one venue to
forge long-term relationships for the development of student media and for the delegates
to improve their ability to manage multiple
content across multiple media platforms, experience successful media convergence, and
make the most of the data revolution.
The 44 talks and topical workshops featured
notable speakers in the industry. Among those
present were Maria Ressa, Rappler CEO; Boy
Abunda, TV Personality; Ted Failon, ABS-CBN
news anchor; Marites Danguilan-Vitug, co-founder of the Philippine Center for Investigative
Journalism; Val Victa, multi-awarded actor; and
Ramon Bautista, actor, director, and author.
The Congress concluded with an acquaintance
party and awards ceremony at the Forum of the
Philippine International Convention Center.
Loud and out at the UCSAA Opening Ceremonies
During the August 23 - UCSAA opening ceremonies and first round of
basketball games, our DLSAU PEP Squad and cheering community,
though grossly outnumbered, arguably cheered ‘louder’ for the
team. Win or lose, the sense of ‘school spirit’ was evidently intense.
Even in defeat we all were victorious. And that was the ‘Animo!’
Keep the faith! ‘And never shall we fail!’

LASALLIAN LANGUAGE CENTER . . .
FOUR YEARS AND MORE TO GO!
In June 2009, the International
Language Center (ILC) started operating as a learning center catering
to the English language needs of
English as a Foreign Language (EFL)
learners. The Center was housed
in the fourth floor of the PE Building and was then managed by the
Korean officials of Jabez International Educational Center, Inc.

The Lasallian Language Center of the De La Salle Araneta University is offering – for
free – short courses in conversational Korean. Around 100 Korean students of the
LLC have volunteered to teach as a gesture of friendship and gratitude to the
Filipino Lasallians of the DLSAU.
This is open to students, faculty, and personnel.
Dates: September 7, 14, 21, 28 (Four Saturdays)
Time: 8:00 AM to 12:00 NN

AN1MO PRIDE
URC research scientists in Chiang Mai Conference
The head of the University Research Center, Mr. Glenn Banaguas, with his
first-rate junior research scientists attended the International Conference
on Interdisciplinary Research and Development (ICIRD 2013) in Imperial
Mae Ping Hotel, Chiang Mai, Thailand on 6-10 August 2013.
Mr. Banaguas, the youngest and the only Filipino Plenary Speaker in the
Conference, shared his thoughts on Global Climate Change and Disaster
Risk in a Plenary Session moderated by Dr. Piamsak Menasveta, Royal Institute. The junior research scientists, who were also the youngest oral presenters in the conference, were Raeyan Ramos, Victor Angelo Fuentebella,
John Abdul Rahman Naguit, Karina Bernert, Angel Lee, Joyce Maghacot,
and Vincent Dominic Belza.
The Conference aims to strengthen progress in R&D for all disciplines and
to exhibit, share, and promote the advancement and experiences of scholars from around the world leading to their usages for humankind.
Research Head shines in ADB Climate Change Conference
DLSAU Head for External Research, Mr. Glenn
Banaguas, received accolades for his edifying
presentation on impacts and risks of long-term
climate variability on agriculture, the poorest
and most vulnerable sector in the country, in the
seminar entitled “Building Critical Mass Awareness about Climate Change - Engaging Media, Advertising & Entertainment Sectors” organized by
the Asian Development Bank on 22 August 2013.
Mr. Banaguas was one of the resource speakers
along with some of the country’s top scientists and
researchers. The seminar aims to stimulate the
dialogue and cooperation in mitigating and adapting
to climate change through multi-sector partnerships
between different sectors. This was sponsored by
ADB, Swedish Int’l Development Cooperation (SIDA),
National Youth Commission (NYC), Clean Air Asia,
ANC, Lopez Holding Corp., and the OML Center.
It has been a way of life in the NSTP courses to celebrate the Holy Mass every Saturday before the start of any lecture. The Holy Masses have
been lively partway due to the choir and music accompaniment. The NSTP choir is customarily organized through volunteers from different
courses or NSTP clusters. This scholastic year the singing group named LA pSALLEmist (The Psalmist) was formed unexpectedly. While the socalled would-be members waited for their turn to undergo the school-sanctioned drug testing they began playing the guitar and singing contemporary songs. Little did they realize that they will later be singing and practicing songs for the NSTP Masses. Way to go, LA pSALLEmist!
