Saint-Malo has blossomed into a
verdant and very enjoyable course.
The lakeside and forest setting would grace
any course but particularly befits this American
target-golf design. Although the fairways are
large, there are hazards aplenty and lots of
water, huge bunkers and well-placed trees so
it’s quite a tricky course. A good design and
much-liked. Easy walking. Ten miles south of

tucked away in the countryside
near Rennes.
Much appreciated for its pretty,
tree-lined fairways, Les Ormes
provides a varied challenge in a
lovely location.
Even off the back tees, this course is not long
but big hitters are checked by the clever
fairway lengths and water hazards and small,
subtle greens with a number of three-hundredyear-old trees and several holes around the
chateau. Well-run and a lovely “only in
France” chateau clubhouse. Easy walking. Ten
miles north-east of Dinan and 18 miles southeast of Dinard.

Short but with a sting in the tail of many of its
holes, Freslonniere is a visual treat and will
test the mettle of even the finest drivers. In
fact, the forest and flowers are so close on
some holes, it’s best to take a mid-iron and
pray!
Family-owned, this is one of our favourites and
is worth the drive even if you’re staying in
Dinard - particularly if you make time to visit
old Rennes afterwards. Easy walking. Five
miles west of Rennes and 30 miles south of
Dinan.

golf, La Baule is one of the major
players in French golf.
Opinions vary as to which of the two 18-hole
courses is better. Designed by Dave Thomas,
Michel Gayon and Peter Alliss, you can’t go
wrong. Much of the course is fairly generous
with wide bunkers and gently contoured
greens – a design which most players will take
to and thus a good game is promised.
The verdant, tree-lined fairways make for easy
walking and the lake holes and relaxed
ambience are more than distracting. Well
maintained, this is a seriously slick golf club
from the first tee to the wonderful clubhouse.

On the splendid beach at the smartest end of
the resort, there are 207 superb bedrooms. The
hotel offers lots to do: the heated outdoor
seawater pool is perfect for those not hardy
enough for the real thing and there’s an

and the fabulous tennis and equestrian centres

surprise you.
Ideal for a morning game, a spot of lunch at
the welcoming clubhouse and then off to see
the sights of the medieval city some 10 miles
distant, Nantes is a ‘hidden gem’.
Super fairways meander through tight,
majestic woodland and around the River Cens.
The greens can be small and the undulations
do make your short game critical - a quality
challenge! However, look at how to play the
hole before your tee-shot and you should score
reasonably. Fairly easy walking. Eight miles
north-west of Nantes.

There are nine very pretty bedrooms (the ones
in the tower are our favourite, but they are
smaller) and the service is at just the right
level. The lounges are also impressive and a
large terrace adjoins the gardens.
Overlooking the River Belon, a chateau and 87
hectares of woodland, Kertalg is a haven of
tranquillity but also close to two of the best
courses and the port of Pont-Aven.

One of the best links in France

Although some 80 minutes from
La Baule, this course is a highly
recommended day out.
Leave mid-morning, arrive in time for lunch at
the panoramic clubhouse and then go tackle

this super links/coastal parkland as best you
can. From the first shot to the last, you’ll be
tested and teased and it will invigorate even
the most tired of swings.
Condition is good except that the links holes
can be patchy (purists would argue that is
how it is meant to be). Birdies, blobs, bumps
and runs...Hooray for Saint-Jean de Monts
and matchplay! Mostly flat. 30 miles southwest of Nantes and 55 miles south of
La Baule.
Pleasant 15-minute walk from Carnac port
This is a good value, recentlyrenovated hotel overlooking nearby
Carnac and the Atlantic Ocean.

The Manoir de Kertalg provides a
“home from home” atmosphere in
luxurious surroundings.

It’s probably the toughest course in western
Brittany but you won’t mind making bogeys
with holes and views this good. Starting and
ending with parkland holes and well planned
hazards, there is also some marvellous links
running alongside the dramatic coastline in

and there are several good holes – particularly
around the turn. A nice clubhouse. Quite easy

good all-round game is encouraged as some
greens are large and some fairways are tight
and vice versa.
Overall, a fair test but single-figure players
should play off the back to provide a real
challenge where the least of your worries will
be the subtle greens. The clubhouse is a little
dated but is large and has a nice terrace
restaurant. Easy walking. Seven miles from
Auray, 16 miles east of Lorient.
An outstanding parkland test, Saint-Laurent is
consistently well-maintained and enjoyable. A

Play sensibly off the tee and avoid the wellplaced oaks and chestnut trees and then go for

you’re driving well, you might be tempted to
cut a couple of corners but “straight and true“
will win the day as there are too many hazards
