First and foremost major thanks to the rink ratz for battling all the warm weather and keeping an ice up for
skating. In fact we had a good ice even for our family
skate party. It was a well attended event with 200+ people and Harvey the Hound coming out to visit us. Big
thanks as well to all the volunteers that helped throw
this especially Lori Froese and Etienne Bley.
Brian Moule and I attended a meeting with Ric McIver
and South Bow River Communities Action Group. There
were some good initiatives that went into place prior to
last year’s runoff to limit the effects. Other initiatives are
being looked at to add to what has already been done.
There were also a number of points brought up that the
group feels should be addressed in which Ric was looking into for us.

To Whom It May Concern;
Building
Family Assets
at Home:
Ideas for all Family Members
I am writing to you on behalf of Deer Run Community
Centre. We are a Non Profit Organization holding our
Annual Fun Money Casino held this year on March 21,
2015. It is also our 35th anniversary this year! This fund
raiser is an essential part of being able to provide the
creative and innovative programs for the Community in
which a significant amount of children would benefit.
Family assets are the everyday things families do to be
strong, even in challenging times. They are the actions
we take to build healthy relationships and healthy family members. Whether you are a child, teen, or parenting adult, everyone in the family plays a role in building
these assets. Here are some ideas for how you can build
assets at home.
Your donation will bring us closer to providing the Centre with much needed funds to ensure that the children
receive the best in programs and activities. Many business and community leaders are on board. Our community is clearly excited and eager to see this annual fund
raiser succeeds.
Establishing Routines
Families are stronger when they share meals, traditions,
and activities together, and when family members know
they can depend on each other. Here are some ways you
can build these assets in your family.
You can be a part of that excitement by supporting our
youth with either a cash donation or item donated for
our Silent Auction. We are happy to acknowledge your
donation on our website and published in the Community Newsletter (The Villager) and at our event.
We will be advertising your name at the event via a
large poster, on our website, and on social media as
well as a public running banner in our center of all the
2015 sponsors. If you would like to provide us some
high quality graphics, that would be helpful (etienne@
deerruncalgary.com).
I would like to thank you for considering this opportunity to partner with our organization for raising funds. If
you have any queries regarding our organization, or the
project itself, please feel free to contact me at the address given above or at my email info@deerruncalgary.

Sincerely yours,
Lori Froese, Social Director

• Make family meals a priority. Figure out together how
often you eat together and what makes meals enjoyable for everyone and then make a plan for your family
meals. Be creative! Take turns picking out the menu, try
new recipes, or set a theme for the meal conversation
like “favourite movies that include food”. If you can’t eat
dinner together, try eating breakfast or lunch.
• Plan regular family fun nights. Brainstorm the kinds of
things you like to do together and that fit your budget.
Some families go out to dinner together. Others play
board games at home. Some may take a walk or a hike.
Find something that works (and is fun) for your family.
• Be intentional about maintaining meaningful traditions in your family. These may include how you celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and milestones in
life. For some families, these may include religious or
spiritual traditions, such as worship, prayer, sacred
readings, or music. Whatever the specific tradition, tell
stories about its importance, history, and meaning—
both across generations and for each member of your
family.

Employment
Insurance
Tips
With the downturn in the economy and the large number of people being laid off here is some information on
applying for Employment Insurance (EI).
1. Apply for Employment Insurance right away, even if
you don’t have your record of employment, and if you
have received severance pay. You have 28 days to apply for EI if you wait longer it will affect the length of
your benefits and the size of your weekly payments.
2. Make sure you send in all the required documents,
any delays will lengthen the time you wait to receive
benefits.
3. If you are denied benefits, submit a request for reconsideration within 30 days of the day you were
informed of the decision. People make mistakes, and
you need to make sure the decision made is a correct
one. If it is denied again, you can appeal to the Social
Security Tribunal. You have 30 days to appeal a decision.
4. There is a two-week waiting period where you will
not receive benefits.
5. You must be ready, willing and able to accept work.
6. You have to report every two weeks.
7. EI requires you to keep track of your job search activities. Your claim could be audited, and you must have
the job search handy. Two or more search activities
per business day is a minimum recommendation. You
will only need to present the job search if asked.
8. You must report any absences from Canada. You are
not eligible for benefits when you are outside of Canada, with a few exceptions.

Program of the Month
Genbukan World
Ninpo Bugei
Federation
Jujutsu and Ninpo Martial Arts
Ages 8 – Adult
DRCA
There are three fundamental, true martial arts, that go
back thousands of years. Jujutsu, Ninpo and Kung Fu. All
other martial sports such as Karate, Judo, Aikido, etc all
come from these 3 true martial arts.
True martial arts come from the battlefield. Those who
won wrote down how they won and passed that on to
others who followed them. It is the martial arts of the
victors who fought in real life and death battles.
After some time, softer versions developed for basic
training, fitness, and so on. These became what are
known now as martial sports. They have become very
wide spread around the world because they are easy
and do not require much commitment or hard training.
These martial sports often have a number of rules applied to them on what you can and cannot do in self
defence. This is very limiting and is not for real self defence. When in a real life or death situation, one cannot
use sport applications to win.
Many of us within the Genbukan World Ninpo Bugei
Federation hold Dan level belts in a variety of martial
sports from our youth and early adulthood. When seeking to know more, we eventually came upon the Genbukan and realized how little we actually knew. It was
then that we each made a decision – to continue with
our original path for more Dan levels or begin again and
truly learn real self defence. We did not train for belts or
bragging. We trained to defend ourselves and not be intimidated by bullies and tyrants. Not one of us has ever
looked back from our decision to pursue the Genbukan.
Our lives became dedicated to become experts at real
martial arts and true professionals, and we continually
train to improve and grow. Real training is not about
belts, or ranks or how much one can brag about their
12
competitions. This has nothing to do with real martial
arts. Martial arts are not about the ego.
Program of the Month
The Genbukan World Ninpo Bugei Federation actually
encompasses 50 different martial arts – the main two
being Jujutsu (the self defence techniques of the Samurai) and Ninpo (the self defence techniques of the Ninja).
Unlike movies that make Ninjas out to be assassins for
hire, true Ninpo is for the betterment of the world and
training in it requires much dedication and sacrifice.
It teaches all forms of self defence including striking,
grappling, ground fighting, weaponry both modern
and traditional, locks, chokes, breaks, etc. (Most of these
things are not taught to our youth classes however.
We teach only what makes sense for them to know at
young ages.) We do not run around in cowls or facemasks, make smoke bombs, nor hide in shadows with
poison on our fingertips.
cont’d
As a student advances in the Genbukan, they gain access to more styles and ways of self defence and become guardians of that knowledge to pass down to
the next generation. We also teach basic Japanese
language and etiquette as well as fitness and flexibility
training, basic Japanese philosophy, and the history of
the Samurai and Ninja. Our classes are devoted to training in effective real world techniques for self defence of
yourself, your loved ones, or your country. The training
takes time, is hard, and it works.
An Affiming Ministry
Deer Park & St Andrew’s
United Churches
Our website www.calgaryninja.com has links to the
world website as well as the Canadian one, and also has
videos and info on classes. Any person wanting to begin
training at the school must first contact us online via the
website and then come try a free class where we can
meet you and vice versa. We also currently have an additional offer of one free month of training to help people
start off. After that, if a student wishes to join the school,
they ask permission to do so and begin paying for regular classes. All of that information is on our website.
What we look for in any potential student is honesty,
compassion, willingness to learn, manners, and dedication. Without these things, you will not be allowed to
join our school.
I welcome those who are truly endeavouring to join
our school at the DRCA. Begin a path that has been laid
down by those that have come before you over thousands of years.

St. Philip Fine Arts School
This month we would like to explain what should happen at
school patrol crossings.
St. Bonaventure
Junior High
St. Bonaventure is looking forward to an exciting
March with a number of happenings that are
representative of spirituality, citizenship, and
excellence.
The junior high band program will be attending a
very productive band camp at Camp Evergreen.
What a wonderful opportunity for our band students to continue to develop their musical gifts
and talents! A special thanks to St. Bonaventure’s
band teacher and the parent volunteers. Please
know that your assistance is greatly appreciated.
The band program will also perform at the Kiwanis Music Festival.
St. Bonaventure’s Spanish Program Open House
Evening and the Junior High Open House events
are expected to be very well attended as a number of perspective families look to gain more
information regarding the many programs that
operate at St. Bonaventure. Thank you to our
dedicated teachers and students who make
these events a success.
Badminton season is now in full swing. Best of
luck to all of our players and coaches. Go Falcons!
Our next interscholastic activity will be flag football with tryouts commencing the week of April
13.
Spiritually, the annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake
Breakfast along with our Ash Wednesday Celebration marked the beginning of the Lenten season. Many thanks to our Shrove Tuesday Pancake
Breakfast parent volunteers along with the St.
Bonaventure Parish for continually demonstrating kindness and Catholicity.
Finally, St. Bonaventure continues to increase
student technology in an effort to improve student engagement and learning. The recent arrival of a new set of Chromebooks will positively impact students at St. Bonaventure. Outstanding!

School patrol crossings are located at busy intersections near
schools where students help other students cross the street
safely. School patrollers are 11 and 12-year-old students who
have volunteered to stand guard in all kinds of weather to
help students cross safely. Pylons are set out on either side of
the crossing to alert drivers that there will be patrollers at the
intersection before school and after school. When there are
students waiting to cross, the patrollers watch for a break in
traffic to blow their whistles and put out their stop signs. For
safety reasons, the patrollers step to the corner and put out
their stop signs and do not walk onto the street. At this time,
cars must stop at least 5 meters from the intersection. The patrollers instruct the students across. When all students have
safely crossed to the other side, the patrollers will step back
from the corner with their signs behind their backs. Cars may
then proceed with caution.
If you are a pedestrian, we ask you to please cross with the
safety patrols.
We understand that extra time is needed to drive in school
zones so if these areas are near where you drive, please plan
extra time to ensure our students are safe.
St. Boniface School
March at St. Boniface was an awesome month. We were busy
with progress reports and Parent/Teacher conferences. The
students had a great time shopping at our Scholastic Book
Fair in the middle of the month and the grade three and four
students enjoyed swimming for a week.
As a school community we have been working towards our
Lenten journey where we have made a renewed commitment
to follow Christ’s teachings with prayer and reconciliation
at the heart of our journey. We are also continuing with our
district them of “Love Kindness” as we show love towards one
another by doing random acts of kindness every day. We are
looking forward to April as we celebrate Holy Week with the
Stations of the Cross liturgy and Easter break.
At the end of the month we are very excited for our Family
Dance with a 1950s theme “Sock Hop” and Silent Auction
sponsored by school council. There are some amazing items
to bid on and an evening filled with fun activities so we hope
all our school families are able to join us.

Nine Tips
to Bring Your
Lost Pet Home
Warm spring weather brings an increase in lost pets.
At Calgary Humane Society, one of our roles is to make
sure lost pets find their way home! If your pet has gone
missing, here are a few tips:
1. DON’T PANIC! As scary as it is to find your pet missing, the most important thing you can do is remain
calm. Stop and take a few deep breaths. Examine the
situation and think about what may have happened.
Once you have some ideas, start making a plan. If your
pet has been gone for a very short time, it may make
sense to go looking and calling for them. If they’ve
been missing for a while, then calling friends to help
look and calling in lost reports might be a better plan.
2. Start making lost reports. When you call, provide as
much information as you can about where and when
your pet was lost and provide as much descriptive
information as you can. Was your pet wearing a collar? Do they have distinctive markings? What is their
microchip/tattoo number? These little details greatly
increase the chance that someone will correctly recognize your pet. Sending or posting good quality
photos of your pet will also help.
Places to send lost reports:
• Calgary Humane Society Animal Admissions – 403205-4455
• City of Calgary Animal Services – 311
• Kijiji/Craigs List/Local Buy/Sell websites
• Facebook/Twitter/social media (encourage others to
share)
• Social media has many local lost pet groups (Southern Alberta Pet Connection and YYC Pet Recovery are
two example of pages in Calgary)
• Contact smaller rescues in the city directly
3. Put out things to entice your pet home. Put food,
a favorite bed and other familiar objects out to help
tempt your pet back home. If your pet is skittish or

scared, renting or borrowing a live trap and putting
the items into the trap may help. Have somebody
keep an eye on these items to watch for your pet to
return.
4. Arrange a search party. Call friends, relatives and
neighbours to help search for your pet. Choose the
people that your pet is most familiar and friendly
with to go out and search. Ask the people who do not
know your pet as well to help with other jobs, like lost
report phone calls.
5. Create lost posters and hang them up. Include a
number that you can always be reached at (like a cell
phone) on the sign. Hang up the posters in the areas
that you think your pet might be, concentrating on
areas where lots of people will see the signs. Remember where you have signs so you can remove them
once your pet is home!
6. Keep updating your signs and lost reports. Update
lost reports and social media posts. Check that posters are still hanging up and readable.
7. Never give up hope. At Calgary Humane Society we
have seen some amazing reunions. We have reunited
pets with their family years, and even decades after
they went missing.
8. When your pet is home, thank everyone! Everybody loves a happy ending. Cancel lost reports, update social media postings and take down any lost
posters.
9. Stop this from happening again. Examine the situation behind how your pet went missing and evaluate
what could prevent a similar problem in future.
As always, prevention is the best medicine. Investing
in permanent identification (a tattoo or microchip) for
your pet and routinely checking your property to ensure your pet cannot go wandering are the best way to
protect your pet from loss.

Government Pay Cuts
At the time of writing this, I’m assuming the Member
Service Committee will vote on MLA salaries being cut
5 percent. While I support this, I believe the MLA salary
should be reduced by 8 percent.
Effective February 1st, Premier’s salary will decrease by
$10,887.50 from $217,750 to $206.862.50 while Speaker
Gene Zwozdesky and cabinet ministers’ salaries will all
decrease by $10,050 from $201,000 to $190,950. While I
am pleased by any cuts to MLA pay, the Premier should
have rolled back ministerial compensation by 30 per
cent and MLA base pay by 8 percent in order to reverse
the extra $11,000 in RRSP contributions equivalent to an
8% pay increase that the PCs voted themselves in 2012.
What he’s done is merely “window dressing”. If our plan
were implemented, taxpayers would save around $1.4
million and Albertans would see real leadership.
Budget and Taxes
It’s no secret that the drop in oil prices is going to mean
some tough decisions are going to have to be made as
the government prepares its 2015 budget. Some of the
ideas being considered include increasing or creating
new taxes. Whether it’s income tax hikes, a PST, or
increased gas taxes, I’ve made it clear that I personally,
oppose those measures. The government should look at
getting its spending in order before asking Albertans to
pay more.
Second-guessing

Return to the Legislature
The spring sessional calendar has been released and
we now know that the legislature will resume sitting on
March 10. I am eagerly anticipating whatever legislation
the government may bring forward. The 2015 Budget
is expected to be introduced sometime before the end
of March. I will be sure to keep you informed on what
that budget means for the constituents of Calgary-Fish
Creek.
Online Camping Reservations
To help visitors connect with the summer camping

which began on February 23.

A father Emperor
penguin withstands
the Antarctic cold
for 60 days or more
to protect his eggs,
which he keeps on
his feet, covered
with a feathered flap.
During this entire
time he doesn't eat
a thing. Most father
penguins lose about
25 pounds while they
wait for their babies
to hatch. Afterward,
they feed the chicks
a special liquid from
their throats. When
the mother penguins
return to care for the
young, the fathers go
to sea to eat and rest.

COUNCILLOR, WARD 14
PETER DEMONG
www.calgary.ca/ward14
[email protected] or 403 268-1653
Hello Ward 14! We’re nearing the end of winter, and
there are already two Aldertalk sessions behind us. If
you want to talk about one (or more) municipal subjects,
join me at the Mid-Sun Community Centre on March 14,
from noon to 2 p.m. If you can’t make it in March but
still want to join, then visit www.calgary.ca/aldertalk for
upcoming dates.
Many interesting topics come up at Aldertalk; topics
like street lights. That topic came up at the January
Aldertalk, and there are some big changes coming in
the near future. I am very happy to be moving these
changes forward.
Council has approved city-wide retrofitting of street
lights. The southeast of the city is scheduled for a
complete retrofit in 2016. The street lights will be
converted to take LED bulbs. They will save money, and
save the environment.
Over the 2015-2018 timeframe the City will replace
about 90,000 streetlights with LED fixtures, and
although the estimated $32 million initial cost might
seem large, the financial benefit to the City is well worth
it in the long term. LED lights use less electricity for a
similar quality of lighting, and need to be replaced less
often. LED lights are directional, so they waste less light.
This results in better energy conservation, efficiency,
and less light pollution in the night sky. LED lights will
reduce the City’s operating costs by $50 million over ten
years—a cost recovery period of only six years.
The conversion will take place in two phases. First, they
will be installed in a handful of communities to gain
insight, and will then be installed city-wide. If you’re
in the neighbourhood, why don’t you check out the
future of street lighting? You can find out where to go
by searching “LED lights” on www.calgary.ca.
Did you know? There are some slight differences in
blue and black cart pick up.
While you can expect the garbage man to pick up any
extra waste that won’t fit in your black bin, you shouldn’t
expect the same for the recyclables you put in your
blue bin. This is because the City’s Waste and Recycling
department won the contract to provide the blue cart
service through a bid on a contract that stipulates cart
collection only. There was no bid, or contract for black
cart collection.
You can always bring your extra recyclables to
community recycling depots across the city, or store it to
be collected later, and of course any material intended
for the black cart can be left out for regular pick up. Just
make sure that the waste is in a bag that is easily lifted
with one arm, and is about one to two feet from the cart.
I am always interested in having a conversation about
whatever colour cart, or variety of topic that you wish
to discuss. Feel free to contact me anytime! Also, don’t
forget that I send email reminders for Aldertalk, and
other important happenings in Ward 14, but I need your
consent to send them. You can state your consent via an
email to [email protected]. Goodbye for now!
Why: Why do aircrafts use “mayday” as their call
for help?
Because: This comes from the French word
m’aidez – meaning “help me” – and is pronounced, approximately, “mayday”.

INVESTING 404
Investing 101 is to buy a house, pay off your mortgage and set some money aside
for a rainy day.
Investing 202 introduces you to Canada Saving Bonds, GICs, RRSPs and TFSAs.
Investing 303 involves mutual funds, stocks and more sophisticated investments
Investing 404 looks into alternatives after the foundation of your investments
has been established. With extra money one can buy a bigger house, purchase a
vacation property, invest in works of art or look at other things to collect that should
increase in value or at least keep up with inflation.
For the past 64 years the Calgary Numismatic Society (CNS) has quietly been
providing a forum where investors in coins, paper money, tokens or other forms of
money can meet, discuss, debate and decide on the value of a great many items
relating to all forms of money. In the 1960s coin collecting became a craze with all
manner of people getting into the hobby with absurd profits being made. The silver
crash of 1970 brought this to an abrupt end and many were left with large losses.
Register Now
www.ClimbforWilderness.ca
Since then the value of coins and other quality numismatic items have kept pace
with inflation. Those who do the research, do not expect to get rich overnight and
invest in quality items have found both an enjoyable hobby and a way to build
alternative assets in their investment portfolio.
