Social responsibility
It is good to be back in Vietnam! After a long summer in which many of you
returned home to a very dreary and cold Holland it is good to realize life here
isn’t too bad! Sun, mostly blue skies and a nice roof over your head.
Which is more than a lot of Vietnamese can say. That’s why we decided to
bring this side of this beautiful country to your attention as well. Those of you
who are already helping people out on a daily basis and donating goods and
spare time to orphanages are growing in numbers. Lots of companies are also
out there doing charity work, for example building schools and giving out free
vaccinations to children.
Another great initiative is the Expedition Vietnam from SOS Children’s
Villages. You can help raise funds to create a better future for children while
making an exciting bike ride through Vietnam.
Even the smallest effort can make a difference, for example by donating books
to the Consular Club for their annual Christmas Charity Bazaar.
Our faithful readers may notice we have made some small changes to this issue.
There is an event calendar which tells you when to go where and a new section
‘Wistjedatjes’ with all kinds of small news items and fun stuff.
And last but not least we would like to thank our friend Joep for contributing
his stories ‘Joep in Vietnam’ to Double Dutch magazine. Sadly we have seen the
last of his columns in the previous issue of Double Dutch. We wish Joep all the
best for the future!

Cargill cares
Joris Klazen, Controller - Cargill Animal Nutrition Vietnam
Cargill Inc. is an US-originated
commodity trading company, but
in Vietnam it is mainly known
for its animal feed and its Dutch
based Cocoa business. After the
US and Vietnamese relations had
normalized in 1995, Cargill set up
shop in Vietnam. Right from the
start, the local team in Vietnam
decided it should also give back to
the community under the umbrella
of the global “Cargill Cares”
program.
This program includes helping
victims of flood-hit areas, granting
scholarships and providing education
equipment to Universities, and
supporting orphanage facilities.
However, our main focus in Vietnam
is to build schools in remote areas in
order to provide poor children with
access to education.
The strength of the Cargill Cares
program is that customers, dealers,
suppliers and Cargill employees not
only join hands in raising funds, but
also initiate the building projects.
A team of Cargill employees guide
the whole process, starting with the
fundraising day to selecting hardship
areas where the schools will be build,
from contracting builders to finally
transfer the management of the
school to the local authorities.

In Vietnam, it all started as a small
program in 1996, with a dozen Cargill
employees raising one thousand
dollars. Cargill matched another
thousand dollars and with this sum
of two thousand dollars we built a
playground and provided learning
equipment for handicapped children
in Ho Chi Minh City (District 4).
This year, the program’s fund-raising
event resulted in 150 thousand
dollars. More than 4,000 customers,
dealers, vendors and employees
got together at Suoi Tien park (the
famous “rock” on the way to Mui Ne)
to enjoy a day of games, fun, singing
and swimming, all for a good cause.
Just recently, I participated in the
official opening of a kindergarten
school with four classrooms that was
built under the Cargill Cares Vietnam
program in Phu Luong District, Thua
Thien Province. This is the 46th
school Cargill built in the country.
The goal is to build a school in each
of the 70 provinces of Vietnam by
2015.
Building these schools in mainly
remote areas is a great way to help
children receive education and
contribute in a meaningful way to
the development of Vietnam. It
also strengthens the ties between
customers, suppliers and Cargill. We
feel that even though we are a foreign
company, we are part of Vietnam and
its community. On a personal note,
the excitement from the children and
the happiness from an entire village
makes me feel engaged and in a sense
proud to be part of this.

A double win

No good news seems to come
from global stock exchanges
these days. There is one pleasant
exception however: the midSeptember release of the Dow
Jones Sustainability Index
2011. Dutch firms are global
sustainability leaders in key sectors
such as travel & leisure, chemicals,
industrial goods & services and
personal & household goods.
Corporate Social Responsibility
(CSR) pays off. In fact CSR
presents the Netherlands with the
opportunity to give itself a distinct
edge on international markets.
Good news indeed, which we can
benefit from in Vietnam as well.
The Dutch government has clear
expectations of the business
community when it comes to
international CSR, starting with
compliance with the OECD
Guidelines for Multinational
Enterprises. This code of conduct has
the support of all the OECD member
states, and a growing number of other
countries. They were drafted with the
business community, trade unions and
civil society organizations, addressing
issues such as working conditions,
the environment and corruption. We
expect Dutch companies to use their
influence to address CSR issues in the
supply chains they deal with.
In my two years here I have
experienced that CSR means a double
win for most Dutch investors. As
they are linked to global supply
chains and Western markets, our
companies already comply with many
international standards, which are
not yet common practice in Vietnam.
In this respect they lead by example
and can use this in their government
relations, which particularly in
Vietnam is sometimes key for doing
business. At the same time a level
playing field is clearly lacking in this
respect. Getting Vietnam to accept
international standards is therefore
not only beneficial for people, planet
and profit in Vietnam, it also increases
market share for those companies
with a competitive edge in the
supply chain, including many Dutch
businesses.
For these reasons we at the Dutch
embassy and the Consulate-General
work with Vietnamese and Dutch
partners in public and private sectors
to increase sustainable production
and help Vietnam comply with
international standards. We assist
promotion of Dutch companies as
with the Green Biz event last month,
where we provided a Dutch booth.
When the Prince of Orange and
Princess Máxima visited Vietnam in
March, we co-organized with VCCI
a business leaders’ lunch on CSR,
involving Dutch and Vietnamese
investors. We have instruments at
our disposal to promote economic
diplomacy and mutual and beneficial
economic cooperation with Vietnam.
If you have any ideas to step-up
CSR, why not drop us a line? We can
connect you to relevant partners and,
indeed, might be able to partner with
you and Vietnamese institutions or
companies as well.
I am more then happy to explore
opportunities with you. And so is

Expedition Vietnam
Expedition Vietnam is an exciting
charity event for SOS Children’s
Villages. This life changing
cycling tour will take place
from the 19th until the 27th of
November 2011. Help raise € 1250
while experiencing the beauty of
the Vietnam highlands on this 600
kilometer trip.

The journey
The wonderful route you will be

SOS Children’s Villages is active in
133 countries. At present there are
thirteen SOS Children’s Villages
Connected to these children’s villages
are SOS Kindergartens and SOS
Hermann Gmeiner Schools, which
are also open to children and youths
from the vicinity. The SOS youths
who outgrow the children’s villages
are accommodated in the SOS Youth
Facilities where they learn to become
independent and are assisted in their
job search. The SOS Medical Centre

The Consular Club
The Consular Club of HCMC,
founded in 1994, is a non-profit,
non-political organisation comprising
persons from all countries represented
by a Consular mission in HCMC.
Its principal objective is to make
a contribution towards improving
the quality of life of disadvantaged
groups mainly in Southern Vietnam.
The Consular Club currently supports
22 projects, ranging from providing
school supplies, books and food
to children in several schools and
shelters, and paying the salaries of
some teachers there, providing food
for orphanages and cancer patients,
as well as supporting the construction
of rain water tanks to certain
communities where there is no access
to clean water.

across Vietnam. All proceeds from
the entrance fees and from the stalls
are channelled directly into local
charitable causes.
The main fundraising activity of
the Consular Club is an annual
Charity Bazaar, typically held in

Accelerate access to vaccines in the Developing World

as one of the greatest public
health success stories of the
20th century. Merck has a longstanding commitment to vaccine
research and development and
develops vaccines to help prevent
diseases that cause suffering in
both developing and developed
countries.

a vaccine to help prevent cervical
cancer and other diseases caused by
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and
RotaTeq® to help prevent rotavirus
gastroenteritis in infants and children.

the developing world is a shared
responsibility - no one organization
can do it alone. Collaboration
among industry, international,
national and local organizations,
governments, and non- governmental
development organizations around
the world is the best way to reduce
vaccine preventable diseases in the
developing world.

doses of its’ cervical cancer vaccine
to a special project in 2 provinces.
This means that 9,000 girls were
vaccinated, another round of cervical

be vaccinated. More initiatives are
planned, amongst them a project to
treat and educate hepatitis patients.”

Education has played an important
part in my life. Ever since I
came to the Netherlands as a
refugee from Vietnam, my mother
emphasized the importance of a
good education and of doing well
in school.
I consider myself very lucky to be
well educated in The Netherlands.
Many children from the village where
my family fled from, and from many
other villages in Vietnam are not that
lucky. Families often cannot afford
the tuition fees for the children,
the schools they attend are in poor
condition and teaching materials and
facilities are lacking.
Having seen the daily struggle of
these families and the poor conditions
of the schools, I decided to start
the Truong Thi Ba Foundation to

support disadvantaged children in
getting an education. The Foundation
is named after my mother, Truong Thi
Ba, who passed away in 2008 from
breast cancer. She was the one who
taught me about the importance of
education and inspired me to help
others.
With the foundation we want to add
value
to the development of the
country by providing financial support
for education to the most needy
children and schools in Vietnam. At
the moment we support the Truong
Trieu Hoc School. For 2011/2012
we are giving our support for annual
scholarships, a new schoolyard, school
furniture and scholarships to study in
HCMC.

people in Cam Ranh are in one way
or another involved in fisheries and
related industries. Typically

families have to work to make ends
meet. Even though parents are aware
of the importance of education and
the children are very eager to
go
to school, some children from

Truong Trieu Hoc School have
to
work during the week to provide
food for the family. These children go
around and collect scallops and other
seafood during the low tide. Because
of their absence, some fall behind
and fail their exams. Some parents
cannot afford to pay the tuition fee
(200.000 VND – 10 USD annually –
2011). Even though their income is
low, teachers from the school often
sponsor these children by paying their
tuition, in order for them to learn to
write and read.

Worth the investment
Are trainings worth the investment?
It is difficult to measure, but the main

training is unrelated to performance,
it can be a waste of money. After
the training: does the manager or the
organization gives space to do things
differently? Do you really want to
solve your organizational problems?

needs assessment and also offer
coaching on the job after the training.
We try to get decision makers
involved in the change process as
much as possible. For us, we are
successful not only because of good
training courses; we are successful if
the client has increased performance
in the period after our trainings.

City trip for disadvantaged kids
Fifty kids from Thien An were
treated to a free three day holiday
to a city which is magic for all
Vietnamese: Saigon.
visited the Dam Sen Park, which is
the biggest amusement park in South
Vietnam and we went to the sky deck
of Vietnam’s highest building.
Thien An is a boarding school
and orphanage in Pleiku in the
Central Highlands where about 90
disadvantaged kids and orphans are
being provided with a home and
education. The construction of the
2000 m2 building and the running
costs of Thien An have been and still
are being financed by the foundation
Live and Give and is managed by
catholic Vietnamese nuns.
What’s it like to see elephants for the
first time, to go on a ferris wheel, to
jump around in a jumping castle, to
be in a swimming pool for the first
time in your life and to watch a great
city from a 200 meter high sky deck?
The picture of Rochen Huen’s face
tells it all.
A bus was hired by the nuns and the
kids slept at a catholic hostel just
outside the city centre. We visited the
Zoo, had a BBQ near the children’s
pool area of my apartment building,

Spetterend afscheid van de juffen

In juni heeft de Nederlandse School
Saigon afscheid genomen van juf
Aletta, juf Bianca en assistente
Michelle. Juf Aletta heeft drie jaar
voor de Nederlandse school gewerkt
en juf Bianca maar liefst vijf jaar! Het
was een spetterend afscheid waarbij
alle kinderen van de school een ‘act’
deden tijdens een ‘Bonte Avond’. Wat
ongelofelijk veel talent is er binnen
de school: aanstormende standup comedians, eersteklas dansers,
muzikale kanjers en geweldige
acteurs vulden een 1,5 uur durend
programma. De juffen hebben er
ontzettend van genoten!

Nieuw schooljaar
Eind augustus is het nieuwe schooljaar van de Nederlandse
School Saigon weer gestart, met twee nieuwe leerkrachten.
Enno Pranger als hoofdleerkracht en Daniëlle van
Werkhoven als assistent leerkracht. Bijna de helft van de
leerlingen van vorig schooljaar vertrok rond de zomer – zo
ging de school van 52 leerlingen aan het begin van het jaar
naar 29 leerlingen eind juni 2011. Gelukkig zijn er weer
veel nieuwe leerlingen bijgekomen en staat de teller nu
op 43 leerlingen. Uiteraard een hartelijk welkom voor alle
nieuwe leerlingen - we wensen jullie een fijne tijd toe!

Nieuw bestuur
Ook in het bestuur zijn veel wisselingen. We hebben
afscheid genomen van André de Jong, Hanneke Peters en
Linda Wegenaar. Nieuwe bestuursleden zijn Annemarie
Hellemans, Barbara Vonckx en Natascha Mees.
Het bestuur is daarmee weer compleet en bestaat naast
de ‘nieuwelingen’ verder uit Ruurd Filius, Tim Hendriks

“De Blauwe Lotus”
De Nederlandse school “De Blauwe Lotus” is met
50 leerlingen in de leeftijd van 4 tot 16 jaar en twee
gediplomeerde leerkrachten en een schoolbestuur een
volwaardige en door het Ministerie van Onderwijs erkende
en gesubsidieerde NTC-school.
Nederlandse Taal en Cultuur
NTC staat voor een locatie waar les gegeven wordt in
de Nederlandse Taal en Cultuur. Voor het taalonderwijs
volgen we het Nederlands curriculum. Het doel van het
taalonderwijs is dat kinderen die weer terug verhuizen naar
Nederland of België aansluiting vinden op leeftijdsniveau.
Voor het cultuuronderwijs volgen we de actualiteit in
Nederland en vieren we de typisch Hollandse feesten
als Sinterklaas en Koninginnedag. Ook organiseren
we activiteiten rond de Kinderboekenweek, is er een
themamiddag en als jaarlijkse afsluitende feestelijke
activiteit is er de Vlaamse kermis.
Excursies
Voor alle klassen worden op twee zaterdagen excursies
georganiseerd. De kleintjes bezoeken de dierentuin en
de Nederlandse bakker. De oudere leerlingen hebben de
afgelopen jaren de Heineken bierbrouwerij, de fabriek
van Dutch Lady en de Three Trees bezocht, een atelier
voor juwelen en diamanten. Verder hebben de leerlingen
meegedaan aan een speurtocht door het centrum van
Hanoi, georganiseerd door Urban Solutions. Het doel van
de excursies is om in een ontspannen sfeer bezig te zijn
met het uitbreiden van de Nederlandse woordenschat.

Voortgezet onderwijs
Naast het primair onderwijs hebben we ook een afdeling
voortgezet onderwijs. Dit programma dat in de eerste drie
jaar de basisvorming volgt, is de laatste drie jaar gericht op
het behalen van het IB Dutch A1 self taught examen.
Elke groep krijgt drie uur per week les in Nederlandse Taal
en Cultuur. Met twee leerkrachten betekent dit dat we 10
groepen gevormd hebben. De Blauwe Lotus heeft op de
compound van de United Nations International School
of Hanoi een eigen lokaal waar onze bibliotheek is en elke
middag les gegeven wordt. De tweede groep krijgt in het
ernaast liggende lokaal les.
Na schooltijd nog eens drie uur Nederlands is voor
de kinderen een behoorlijke uitdaging. Het vraagt niet
alleen van de kinderen maar ook van de leerkrachten
en ouders wat extra’s. We proberen het programma zo
afwisselend en aantrekkelijk mogelijk te maken. Van ouders
verwachten we dat ze kinderen motiveren door thuis
Nederlands te praten en de school een warm hart toe te
dragen. De laatste jaren is gebleken dat door een goede
samenwerking met de ouders, een actief schoolbestuur en
een professioneel team, de leerlingen met plezier naar de
Nederlandse les komen en de resultaten goed zijn.

Waarom VN?
Na 8x hier geweest te zijn voor vakantie, een
sabbatical en diverse cursussen Vietnamees,
ben ik verliefd geworden op een Vietnamees,
het land, de mensen en het eten. Al snel
vond ik een baan bij VNR Business Support
en Recruiting, maar in het weekend geef ik
Engelse les aan weeskinderen.
Marco’s werk, hij werkt aan een project voor
Friesland-Campina. Caroline had in Nederland
haar eigen schoonheidssalon en gaf kleding-,
kleur- en stijladviezen. Wellicht kan ze dat hier
voortzetten.
Waar
eerder?
De laatste 11 jaar in Den Haag met een
onderbreking van 6 mnd in Brussel en 3 mnd
in HCMC. Ik ben hier nu ruim 4 maanden en ik
weet nog niet hoelang ik zal blijven.
In het gezellige Brabant, in Helmond
(Brandevoort). We zijn nu 8 weken hier en
verwachten 3 a 4 jaar te blijven.
Eerste
ervaringen
Mijn eerste ervaringen dateren al van 5 jaar
geleden en waren toen positief en zijn het altijd
gebleven. Mijn eerste werkervaringen hier zijn
best wennen. De manier van werken en regeren
is anders en ook de Aziatische cultuur heeft zijn
invloed
Zeer positief, het klimaat is prettig, het eten
is heerlijk en de mensen zijn erg vriendelijk.
Alleen het verkeer is erg wennen
Wat mis je
uit NL?
Soms mis ik wel kleding (omdat ik niet alles heb
meegenomen en de stijl hier is niet altijd mijn
stijl). En dat er laat op de avond geen openbaar
vervoer meer is, want ik neem altijd de bus.
Gezellige etentjes en borrels met familie
en vrienden, gelukkig hebben we skype om
contact te houden met het thuisfront. Wat we
niet zullen missen is een koude regenachtige
zomer en files.
Gezichtscrème. In Vietnam is het niet
eenvoudig om die zonder bleekmaker te
vinden. Op een gegeven moment is mijn crème
wel op, dus ik ben wel op zoek.
Onze katten (twee grote MainCoon katers).
Het geeft een echt thuis gevoel, twee katers
spinnend op de bank. In plaats van muizen,
vangen ze nu gekko’s.
Zeker doen
in VN
Een bijdrage proberen te leveren aan de snelle
ontwikkeling die dit land doormaakt. De jeugd
is zo leergierig en enthousiast!
We zijn van plan om te gaan reizen.

anekdote
Teveel om op te noemen: van een namaak
Mailinh taxi met te snelle meter, een gratis ritje
achterop de brommer, het broodje dat je tijdens
een busrit krijgt, het afval dat bijna altijd op
straat wordt gegooid, het niet stoppen voor een
zebrapad, tot het rijden met de brommer over
de stoep.
Het witte schoonheids ideaal van sommige
Vietnamese vrouwen is raar om te zien. Om
aan dit ideaal te voldoen, bleken ze hun huid en
gaan ze op het strand volledig gekleed het water
in. Wij hebben hebben al een aantal “Michael
Jackson “achtige vrouwen gespot.

Rotterdam en nu voor Provimi
Vietnam, hij is verantwoordelijk voor
een aantal landen in Azië.
Jan Willem’s werkgever,DHL, vroeg
of we naar Vietnam wilden gaan en
dat leek ons wel wat.
Roel werkt voor Royal Haskoning in
Vietnam. Vietnam is voor ons beiden
niet nieuw, we hebben hier al in 2008
en 2009 gewerkt en in 2009 hebben
we elkaar hier ontmoet.
In Helmond. We zijn eind juli
aangekomen in Ho Chi Minh, we
verwachten hier 3 jaar te blijven.
De afgelopen 4 jaar woonden we
in Bangkok, daarvoor Singapore,
Colombo, Hyderabad en Singapore.
We wonen nu dus zo’n 10 jaar in
Azie.
Roel woonde hiervoor in Den Haag
en ik in Mechelen (België). Sinds april
van dit jaar wonen we weer in Ho
Chi Minh en verwachten zo’n 2-3 jaar
te blijven.
Leuk! We voelen ons zeer welkom
en vinden het interessant om zoveel
verschillende mensen te leren kennen.
Ondanks het onwijs drukke verkeer
proberen we ons toch overal met de
fiets doorheen te wurmen…
Veel, heel veel brommers!
We zijn beiden nog steeds onder de
indruk van het chaotisch verkeer en
verbazen ons nog dagelijks hoe men,
ondanks de miljoenen brommertjes,
hier zich toch nog kan verplaatsen.
Familie, vrienden en “je eigen ding”..
Dat moeten we hier nog vinden,
natuurlijk. En de Lays paprika chips!!
Wat we niet missen is de kou en de
regenachtige zomer!
We missen uit Thailand: Boekwinkels
en de maandelijkse weekend trips met
de Bike hash
Spontane familie-bezoekjes en een
avondje gezellig kroegen met goede
vrienden. Verder ook hoffelijkheid in
het verkeer, drop, erwtensoep en Vol
au vent (ragout).
Onze eigen meubels en spullen, zodat
we ons hier meteen thuis voelen
in ons nieuwe huis, en heel veel
chocolade- en gekleurde hagelslag.
Boeken, lego, onze fietsen,
trampoline, 2 skelters en wat
onhandige antieke spullen
Een broodbak-machine voor echt
lekker brood.
Veel van het land zien en alle
geweldige landen eromheen, nu
hebben we de kans!
Weekend-trips, fietsen
Hopelijk veel reizen en genieten van
de Aziatische cultuur.
Ik had tegen de huisbaas gezegd dat
de airco niet werkte.. Wat bleek: je zet
gewoon één van de vele schakelaars
op “on”.
Wij wonen in een straatje met veel
buiten-bioscopen (stoelen gekeerd
naar een grote TV die vanaf 8am tot
10pm actie films uitzendt met veel
geluid) Erg interessant fenomeen…
Bij ons in Europa doet iedereen zijn
best om een lekker bruin kleurtje
te krijgen, hier vermijden vrouwen
panisch elke zonnestraal, en ik kan in
de winkel geen gewone crème kopen
zonder ‘whitening’ effecten.
Willen jullie allemaal een naamplaatje
dragen? Al die nieuwe namen
en gezichten zijn nog moeilijk te
onthouden, hi hi…

sinds midden augustus.
Onze uit de hand gelopen lustrumreis, ha
ha: in februari 2012 zijn we 10 jaar samen.
Maar vooral natuurlijk voor Mark’s werk voor
Schlumberger in Vung Tau.
Met name voor de zon en de blauwe lucht.
Die hebben we wel een beetje gemist de
laatste 4 jaar... We hebben namelijk in
Shanghai gewoond. Ronald werkt in Vietnam
als directeur voor Tebodin, Engineers en
Consultants voor industriële en fine Chemicals
projecten.
Waar
eerder?
Hartje centrum Amsterdam. We wonen
inmiddels sinds half juli in ons nieuwe thuis in
Vung Tau City en verwachten hier een jaar of 2
te blijven.
In Aruba, Uden, Eindhoven, Deurne, China
en nu Vietnam. We hebben hiervoor 4 jaar in
Shanghai gewoond, met erg veel plezier.
Eerste
ervaringen
Het gevoel dat we het diepe in zijn gedoken
en een nieuw leven beginnen in een onbekend
warm land. Voelt goed, het heerlijke eten en de
leuke mensen helpen daar zeker bij.
Erg goed, we wonen nu tijdelijk in
appartementencomplex Riverside. Iedereen hier
is erg open en gemakkelijk in de omgang dus
we zien het helemaal positief in.
Wat mis je
uit NL?
Dierbare vrienden en oude kaas. Verder het
roeien op de Amstel, rondje racefietsen door
de polders naar Monnickendam en ik denk ook
wel de seizoenswisselingen.
Af en toe lekker met z’n allen lekker klagen
over alles. Maar we missen natuurlijk ook onze
familie en vrienden, dat wordt na zoveel jaar
wel moeilijker. We denken door in Vietnam te
wonen meer bezoek te krijgen dan in China.
We proberen ook de voorraad van hagelslag,
vlokken en pindakaas op peil te houden...
Wat meegenomen?
Onze racefietsen! Na vier weken wachten op
DHL en douane, hebben we direct ons eerste
tochtje gemaakt.
2 Chinese katten, al het andere zit nog in de
container. Het was gemakkelijker dan gedacht
om 2 katten te “importeren” vanuit China.
Zeker doen
in VN
Het land van noord naar zuid ontdekken,
proberen de taal te leren en veel genieten.
Leuke vakanties houden en van het leven
genieten.
Vietnamese
anekdote
Vietnamezen zijn gehard in het werk op de
“rigs”, waar ik samen met hen werk. Met
mijn collega’s ga ik ook soms ter ontspanning
naar een Karaoke paleis in Vung Tau! En dan
zingen deze oilrig-operators het liefst de meest
zoetsappige Vietnamese liefdesliedjes (denken
wij, geen idee waar het over gaat), en nog heel
zuiver ook! Wat een contrast en wat een leuke
avond.
Veel dingen zijn wel hetzelfde als in China, het
is toch wel Azië. Maar er wordt hier wel meer
gelachen.... ook hier om schoenmaat ‘41’....
Tenslotte
Ben je al in Vung Tau geweest? Zo nee, het is
zeker de moeite waard.

Mark Boot, Zita Stern, Evi, Milou en Livia
Sybren is Regional Manager Dairy Development voor
FrieslandCampina. Het bedrijf ondersteunt lokale
boeren bij de ontwikkeling van hun melkveebedrijven.
Dit gebeurt door het geven van trainingen en verlenen
van diensten om de melkproductie te verhogen en de
melkkwaliteit te verbeteren. Yt gaat vrijwilligerswerk doen
in een ziekenhuis.
Mark’s werk bij FrieslandCampina.
Voorheen hadden wij een melkveebedrijf in Friesland en
was Sybren bestuurlijk actief binnen FrieslandCampina.
Sybren is hier nu ruim een halfjaar, Yt twee maanden. Wij
verwachten hier de komende drie jaar te verblijven.
Wij zijn in 2002 uit Nederland vertrokken. We hebben
eerst in de Verenigde Staten en in Italië gewoond. Mark
werkt sinds januari in Vietnam en deze zomer zijn ook
Zita en de kinderen vanuit Manilla, Filipijnen, hier naartoe
verhuisd. We hopen hier minstens een jaar of 4 te blijven.
Uitstekend! Van een boerderij op het Friese platteland
naar het leven in een grote stad en ook nog een nieuwe
baan is natuurlijk een grote verandering. Wij hebben
beiden echter nog geen moment spijt van ‘onze move’!
Heel erg goed! We hebben de gemakkelijkste verhuizing
tot nu toe gehad, de kinderen hebben het op school erg
naar hun zin en we zijn erg warm ontvangen.
Onze vier dochters en onze kleindochter blijven in
Nederland. Natuurlijk zijn er wel eens momenten dat je
bij hen zou willen zijn, maar Skypen is ook een uitkomst
om goed met hen in contact te blijven. Verder blijven wij
natuurlijk nuchtere Friezen: ‘ Wat je niet hebt, mis je ook
niet’
Wat waarschijnlijk bijna iedereen mist die wat langer van
huis is: familie en vrienden! Ook vinden we het andersom
verdrietig dat onze ouders de kinderen niet regelmatig
kunnen zien. Verder hebben we af en toe vreselijk veel
zin in drop, Indonesisch eten, filet Americain, speculaas,
ontbijtkoek en paprikachips. Wat we niet missen is de
lange-termijn planning van het Nederlandse sociale leven.
Alles wat je nodig hebt is hier te verkrijgen, dus wij
hebben niets speciaals meegenomen.
Onze boeken en enorme verzameling speelgoed en
spelletjes.
Wij willen het land en de cultuur beter leren kennen
en begrijpen. En natuurlijk leuke plekjes (restaurants)
ontdekken in HCMC!
Reizen in en om Vietnam, meer leren over het Boedhisme
en de Vietnamese cultuur. Ook kijken we ernaar uit om
Sinterklaas op een boot te zien aankomen!
“Same, same” is een uitspraak die wij in verschillende
omstandigheden al vaak hebben gehoord. We betrappen
ons er op dat wij deze uitspraak ook al hanteren.
Mark had op zijn werk geleerd hoe hij in het Vietnamees
“overtref je doelstelling!” moest zeggen. Toen hij dit
enthousiast aan een groep Vietnamese mensen voordeed
was het even stil, totdat één van hen opmerkte dat hij
zojuist “ik moet naar de WC!” had gezegd.
