Cover - encloses glass to reduce stress
and resist glass breakage.
Penberthy reflex and transparent gages
are available In L-/ow, M-medium and
H-high pressure series. A special U-high
pressure series transparent gage is also
available.
The pressure rating for each gage
model given in the following description
and in the tables, is normally listed as
two pressures. The smallest glass size
available in that model corresponds to the
higher pressure - the largest glass size
corresponds to the lower pressure.
Bolts and nuts - alloy steel for high
temperature service. Bolts are spaced for
uniform gasket pressure.
INSTRUMENTS
Optional materials are offered in
the medium pressure series for low
temperature service.
Glass - for strength and resistance to
erosion and thermal shock, tempered
borosilicate glass is standard.
Other models are offered for special
applications and operating conditions.
Flat glass reflex gages –
• Model RL low pressure
• Model RM medium pressure
• Model RH high pressure
Gaskets and Cushions - die cut from
quality material providing resiliency and
long life.
Most gages have a visibility range of 33/4
inches (9.5 cm) in the smallest single
section units and up to 1393/4 inches (355
cm) in the largest ten section units.
LIQUID LEVEL
& CONTROLS
Penberthy reflex gages have a special
prism glass window that uses the
principles of light refraction and reflection
to enhance the indication of the liquid
level. The level Is distinctly visible without
close inspection.
Gage Pressure Ratings
Each gage model is available in several
glass lengths, or sizes. The maximum
pressure that a gage can withstand is
determined by several factors including
glass size. As the glass size increases, the
maximum pressure decreases.
Quality Construction
Throughout
Liquid chamber - to provide strength and
resistance to leakage, all liquid chambers,
whether single or multiple section, are
made of one piece of steel.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Never exceed
liquid level gage manufacturer or
glass manufacturer’s pressure or
temperature rating, whichever is less.

transparent glass gages
Special High Pressure
Transparent Gage –
• Model TU
In this design the gage covers are bolted
directly to the liquid chamber with solid
metal to metal contact between these
parts. All clamping forces are withstood by
the steel components of the gage.
Flat glass transparent gages –
• Model TL low pressure
• Model TM medium pressure
• Model TH high pressure
Penberthy transparent gages are
used where the observation of liquid
characteristics as well as level is required.
They are also used where shields are
needed to protect gage glass from
chemical attack, or where the gage
requires illumination.
Welding Pad Reflex and
Transparent Gages –
• Model RMW
• Model TMW
Welding pad gages are an effective way
to mount flat glass gages directly to tanks
and vessels.
Optional Side Connections
By using offset pattern valves with a 1/2
inch side connected gage, the gage can
be selected with its visibility length equal
to the center to center dimension of the
vessel connections. This provides the
maximum possible visibility for a fixed
mounting dimension.
The glass is contained in a machined
chamber in each cover and sealed to
the liquid chamber with resilient gaskets.
Since the glass is not clamped between
the cover and liquid chamber, it is relieved
of stress concentrations for greater
reliability at higher pressures.
Large Reflex and Transparent Gages –
• Model RLC
• Model TLC
Large Chamber Gages are available from
Penberthy for measuring the level of
turbulent liquids. They tend to stabilize
such liquids for more accurate readings.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Never exceed
liquid level gage manufacturer or
glass manufacturer’s pressure or
temperature rating, whichever is less.

ranges to match Penberthy flat glass
gages. They have a selection of vessel
and gage connections to fit a variety of
mounting requirements.
INSTRUMENTS
Most valves have the Penberthy Floating
Shank union vessel connection. This
feature allows up to 3/8 inch (.95 cm)
variation in center-to-center vessel
tappings or gage assembly. It helps
eliminate excessive stresses and reduces
expensive installation time.

retainers prevent reverse seating of balls
or loss of balls during valve installation.
Valves are available in both straight and
offset pattern designs. Offset pattern
valves permit the inside of the gage glass
to be cleaned easily with a minimum of
disassembly. By removing the vent and
drain plugs or connections, a passage
straight through the gage is opened.
Both upper and lower valves in each valve
set are equipped with horizontal check
balls. Balls are located on the vessel
side of the valve seat. The lower valve is
available with an optional vertical rising
ball check located downstream from the
valve seat. Valve sets with the ball check
removed are also available.
All standard valves are equipped with
stainless steel ball checks. Should the
gage glass break, the balls seat to prevent
loss of tank contents. Extensions on the
ends of the valve stems unseat the balls
when valves are closed. Stainless steel

These are outside screw and yoke that are
used for high-temperature or corrosiveliquid applications. The OS&Y design
isolates the stem threads from the liquid.
Penberthy OS&Y valves are offered with
many features in both straight and offset
pattern design.
Penberthy tubular glass gage valves are
for use in lower pressure applications.
They are available with many combinations
of features for a range of uses.
Valves are available with union or
solid shank vessel connections, and
with a choice of stuffing box sizes for
various glass diameters. All stuffing box

with minimum compression.
These valves can be used with flat glass
gages by using special tubular adapters.
Both straight and offset pattern valves are
offered. Offset pattern valves permit easy
cleaning of gage glass since they provide
a passage straight through the vent
connection, glass, and drain connection.
All standard Penberthy tubular glass
valves have corrosion resistant steel ball
checks for instant shutoff should the glass
break. Upper valves in a valve set have
horizontal ball checks, while lower valves
have either horizontal or vertical acting

Horizontal ball check valves have
extensions on the stems to unseat the ball
when the valve is closed.
