see it to believe it
It’s been said that Lambton County has an unnatural number of artists per capita. It seems to be true! Five communities
have permanent galleries for visual arts, and many others host annual art festivals.
The Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery in Sarnia is a world-class gallery that hosts local and internationally renowned exhibitions. Paintings from Dali, Escher and Carr have graced its walls and brought in thousands of art enthusiasts to view works,
all at no charge.
Nestled in downtown Sarnia, the Lawrence House Centre for the Arts hosts visual, musical and literary art. Concerts,
exhibitions and retrospectives come to life in this unique century home, which is in itself a museum of restored heritage. Be
sure to take in a free spoken-word event in the Turret Room – it’s a unique and enriching experience.
Artist Francis Martin has made his studio home in Watford. From the time he could hold a pencil, Francis has had a need to
create. Mural painting is his first love, with urban walls often his canvas. You can see his work enhancing many Southwestern Ontario towns. Visit his studio to see his latest creations.
The beautiful natural surroundings and laidback lifestyles in Lambton Shores inspire painters, photographers, jewellers and
sculptors to create exquisite pieces. Greet artists in their studios and galleries at the Arts, Eats & Beats Studio Tour held the
third weekend in May. Hear toe-tapping musicians, tour 30+ artist locations, and dine at participating area restaurants.
Experience a smorgasbord of creativity at the annual Sarnia Artwalk festival, which includes art exhibitions, demonstrating
artists, musical and visual performances, and ethnic food.

Explore the rich and diverse heritage of Grand Bend and
Forest through their interpretive walking tours. Pictorial
displays with descriptions dot Grand Bend Main Street and
Main Beach. The displays tell the stories of early beach
picnics, the days of the casino and much more. Forest’s
walking tour is a delight for architecture enthusiasts. The
tour details the history and features for the town’s heritage
and century homes.
Lambton County is proud to be home to three First Nation
communities. Walpole Island, Aamjiwnaang, and Kettle &
Stony Point First Nations were first attracted to the area’s
rivers, lake fishing and abundant game and plant life.
Today’s visitors are welcome to celebrate native culture at
an annual Pow Wow. Experience native dancing, singing,
arts and crafts, and traditional foods – the fry bread is a
must! Find native crafts year round at ThunderBird Crafts
Trading Post, a crafts and supply store at Kettle & Stony
Point First Nation.
Agriculture is an integral part of the history of Lambton
County. Farm life is on display at six county fall fairs.
View the finest culinary and home craft traditions, field
crop competitions, and the county’s best livestock at
these family-friendly annual events.

A growing archival and marine collection can be viewed
at the Sombra Museum Cultural Centre. This modern
research room is interpreted by friendly, local staff. Then
step into the past at the original Bury House, a Victorian
home built in 1881, with eight furnished rooms. There is
also a newly constructed general store and 1930s hair

Oil Museum of Canada
Lambton County’s heritage story is not complete without
an acknowledgement of how the discovery of oil shaped
its future. Visit the Oil Museum of Canada in the Village of
Oil Springs to see the site of the first commercial oil well in
North America. The museum features tools, artifacts and
fascinating stories of drillers who travelled the world in their
quest for black gold. The riches of oil brought prosperity to
the county, resulting in beautiful Victorian architecture in the
Town of Petrolia. Recreational activities like tennis, elegant
society gatherings, and the arts all flourished at the time.
Lambton County’s oilmen were sought out worldwide for
their expertise and techniques.

performing arts
Our performing arts scene is exciting and diverse.
Professional live theatre, in all of its colourful expressions,
takes the stage at Victoria Playhouse Petrolia, the Imperial
Theatre in Sarnia and Huron Country Playhouse near
Grand Bend.
Catch a sunset and a concert at Summer Sunset Sounds on
Grand Bend’s Main Beach. The concert series, held on the
last night of each weekend, features crowd-pleasing musical
acts on a new stage set to open for this year’s season.
Canadian and international films are offered at two film
festivals. The Lambton Food and Film Festival takes place
the fourth weekend in May at Forest’s historic Kineto
Theatre. The South Western International Film Festival is
highlighted by exciting cinematic experiences and will offer
professional training by some the country’s most talented
artists. It is held the first weekend of November
in downtown Sarnia.
The RCMP Canadian Musical Ride is coming to Alvinston
to help celebrate the community’s 140th anniversary on
September 14, 2016. The ride consists of intricate figures
and cavalry drill set to music. In two’s, four’s and eight’s
at a trot, the routine is demanding and requires precise
timing and coordination by horse and rider. This is an iconic
Canadian spectacle not to be missed!

Start your visit at one of Ontario’s ultimate summertime
destinations, Grand Bend’s Main Beach. This Blue Flag
beach (meaning it has met strict international standards
for water quality, safety, accessibility, and environmental
education) is a favourite spot for catching rays and soaking
up beach fun.
Sarnia’s Canatara Park is a full-day family-fun 100-hectare
destination, with over 1,000 metres of sandy Blue Flag
beach, ample parking, picnic shelters, playgrounds, trails,
a children’s animal farm, choo-choo train, and a BMX park.
At Pinery Provincial Park, you’ll find beautiful beaches,
backdropped by giant rolling sand dunes. Come for the surf,
sand and sun, but stay overnight – this park is popular with
campers, whether you arrive in a motorhome or a pup tent.
Dock your boat in friendly Port Franks Blue Flag Marina
and escape to its peaceful beaches, or choose nearby
Ipperwash Beach, a very shallow, safe place for families
to play along the shoreline.

Have you ever seen rivers that shimmer aqua blue?
Or streams that reveal Devonian era fossils?

How about soaking up sun on beaches

You’ll find all of these things in Lambton County!

back in time
To understand the natural wonders of Lambton County,
let’s take a little history lesson. This part of Earth looked
very different 100 million years ago when it was covered
by a large inland sea. Tropical forests grew all around and
provided a natural habitat for creatures large and small.
Over time, the decaying plants and animals became vast
oil deposits, which were discovered bubbling out of ground
in central Lambton County in the 1800s. The inland sea
receded nearly 10,000 years ago, and a terrain of flat,
fertile ground emerged. The County of Lambton’s warden
and cycling enthusiast, Bev McDougall, is especially
pleased with the result, saying, “It makes for some of the
finest cycling in Ontario for the mature cyclist.”
hop around the crop
Family farmers grow a wide variety of crops in the fertile
ground. Cherry, apple and peach orchards dot the
countryside near Arkona and Thedford. Lambton Shores is
home to potato, onion, carrot and celery fields, while Central
Lambton grows delicious corn, beans and cereal crops.

go with the flow
The Ausable River (meaning river of sand) cuts deep into
the county. It’s the world’s second-most-meandering river,
traversing 240 kilometres while the distance from the source
to the outlet at Port Franks is only 64 kilometres. Midway on
its course near Arkona, it falls over an 80-metre drop created
by an earthquake that occurred approximately 10,000 years
ago. The remaining fault valley, called Rock Glen, reveals
rich Devonian fossil beds, which are explored by research
universities and even the public. Each visitor is allowed to
take one fossil find home per visit – what a great souvenir!
everything is shipshape
Ice Age glaciers cut a deep channel between Lake Huron
and Lake St. Clair, and the channel filled with shimmering
aqua-blue water forming the St. Clair River. Today, the river
is a significant shipping channel for the Saint Lawrence
Seaway and is part of the international boundary between
Ontario and Michigan. Indigenous peoples, French fur
traders, lake steamers and today’s giant freighters have all
navigated the river as a major transportation route. Enjoy
the water’s Caribbean-like hue year round from Point
Edward, through Sarnia, and south to Port Lambton.
our grand sand
The sandy beaches at Grand Bend, Pinery Provincial Park
and Canatara Park are also comparable to the Caribbean.
In fact, the name Canatara comes from an Ojibwa word
meaning “blue water.” Continually rejuvenated by the
eroding granite and limestone cliffs to the north, the sand is
moved by the lake currents and deposited on the beaches.
Over time, the wind and waves carry the sand onto the
shore creating dunes. Pinery Provincial Park’s dunes
are home to a rare oak savanna forest. The habitat is a
transition zone between prairie grasslands and oak forests
that is kept stable through periodic forest fires. The Pinery
preserves this fragile and unique ecosystem while sharing
its beauty with thousands of seasonal campers.

noisy fun
Crank up the thrills at the Grand Bend Motorplex – a raceway, drag strip, speedway and
motocross facility that has everyone cheering through the summer racing season. Then hop
into a fully-equipped drag-race-ready Ford Mustang at Derkzen Motorsports for heart-stopping
excitement on the track!

talk to the animals
Bring your young ones to the Children’s Animal Farm in Sarnia’s Canatara Park to see a
peacock spread his plumage, or enjoy the antics of the goats, among many critters to keep
the kids amused. Time your visit right for a tour aboard the Seaway Kiwanis Club of Sarnia’s,
accessible, trackless mini train.
time machines
Ever greet a dinosaur? The Stones ‘N Bones Museum in Sarnia is your chance to do that and
much more. Stand next to a T-Rex’s skull, roar at a grizzly bear, check out a dinosaur egg and
see huge dioramas of your favourite animals. Your family will be spellbound!
Year-Round Fun
Check out our Events at
tourismsarnialambton.com
or in this guide on page 36 to
find fun events to match your
family’s interests.
Jump forward to the pioneer days at the Lambton Heritage Museum in Grand Bend. Step into
a refurbished blacksmith shop, tour a church and let your kids do the teaching at a restored
schoolhouse.
At the Oil Museum of Canada in Oil Springs, you can show the younger generation how the
discovery of oil here in Lambton County led to drillers ‘striking it rich’ around the world.
Lead your little explorers on an expedition to Rock Glen Falls, near Arkona, to see the water
thundering over the ridge and into the glen below, where they can seek out 400-millionyear-old fossils and even keep one as a memento! (How cool is that?) Discover what other
Paleontologists have uncovered when you tour the onsite Arkona Lions Museum and
Information Centre.
Families will love the Moore Museum in Mooretown. This recreated pioneer village has tools of
the trade in a blacksmith shop, printing press shop and harness shop.
Then step into the past at Sombra Museum Cultural Centre. See marine heritage, a Victorian
home complete with children’s toys, a general store, and a 1930s hair salon.
