The Carroll County Chamber will “Run for the Roses”
The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce will
“Run for the Roses” in 2014, starting with the annual
dinner set for Friday, Jan. 10, at the University of
West Georgia’s Campus Center Ballroom. The reception begins at 6 pm, followed by dinner at 7 pm.
Incoming Chamber Chairman Kathy Yates invites
members to “Run for the Roses” themselves during
the after dinner entertainment of six horse races. The
Ballroom’s three large projection screens will allow
every guest to feel as if they are sitting on
“millionaire’s row” as they watch the races.
Annual award presentations will include Citizen of
the Year, the Thomas S. Upchurch Workforce Education Award, Entrepreneur of the Year, and the Horizon Award.
The reception, sponsored by J.R. Morgan Oil Company, begins at 6 pm followed by dinner and races.
Cost is $50 per person or $350 per corporate table of
eight. Please register by Jan. 3 by phoning 770-8322446 or online at www.carroll-ga.org.
As part of the registration price, guests will receive
tickets for choosing a winning horse per race, with
chances of taking home one of six grand prizes.
Guests are encouraged to wear their finest Derby
Day hats to compliment horse derby attire.
“Our Chamber of Commerce is the best of the best,
just as the Kentucky Derby features the best of the
best race horses,” Yates said. “The Chamber’s annual dinner is an opportunity to celebrate successes
and set the pace for the new year’s program of work.
I personally invite you to enjoy this fun evening to
celebrate our community – as Dan Fogelberg’s song
says ‘It’s the chance of a lifetime in a lifetime of
chance.’”
And it’s run for the roses
As fast as you can
Your fate is delivered
Your moment’s at hand
It’s the chance of a lifetime
In a lifetime of chance
And it’s high time you joined in the dance
It’s high time you joined in the dance.

Seizing the moment between future and memory
~ Chairman Gary Leftwich’s Farewell
A year and a half ago, Canadian rockers Rush
released the masterpiece Clockwork Angels, which
included the song "The Garden." Featured among a
realization that we all must nurture and protect our
own gardens are the lines:
The future disappears into memory
with only a moment between.
Forever dwells in that moment.
Hope is what remains to be seen.
How time flies. The past year has been a blur of
board and committee meetings, ribbon cuttings,
informative seminars and workshops,
announcements of new industries, expansions and
job growth.
Future has disappeared into memory as we have
worked together to make Carroll County a better
place to work and live and an example for others to
follow.
Others indeed have followed our lead. They have
traveled distances great and not so great to see firsthand how we nurture our collective garden. Harvard
University came to Carroll County to study our
workforce development partnerships. For the third
straight year, the Atlanta Business Chronicle shared
our story with a statewide audience. Other
communities visited The Burson Center to see how
new businesses thrive with a little help and
encouragement.
After seeing how we do things here, many of our
visitors returned home, using our collaborative
efforts as blueprints to develop gardens of their
own. Others chose to join us in growing our own
garden through new and expanded industries and
hundreds of new jobs to be added in the next few
years.
None of this has happened by accident. You, the
amazing, dedicated collection of Carroll County
Chamber of Commerce members and volunteers,
made it so. It has been my honor to stand shoulderto-shoulder with you as we continue to build a better
community.
Gary Leftwich opened the 2013 Chamber year with the ‘Here
Comes the Sun’ celebration including the ‘Beatles’ at Annual
Dinner.
It has been a privilege to work alongside the
collective staff of the chamber and Carroll
Tomorrow. Together, Daniel Jackson, Donna
Lackey, Suzy McCorkel, Suzy Montalto, Cara
Herzog, Joan Finch, Brian Dill, Kenney Edwards,
Kathy Walker
Rupp and Lisa Ledbetter make up a team with which
no other county in Georgia can compete.
It is with mixed emotions I prepare to close out my
share of the moment between future and memory.
But, it is with the hope that remains to be seen that I
hand over the gavel to Kathy Yates, knowing she
will not let up one bit in our pursuit of excellence as
we deliver success.
I close my term as chairman a better person, having
fully learned what it means to serve others. It was a
very tough lesson at times, but service is the very
fabric of which successful communities are made.
Thanks to all of you who have supported our
chamber through your tireless efforts. You deserve
all of the credit for the success we have delivered.
As we tend our garden, let us remember:
The treasure of a life is a measure of love and
respect the way you live, the gifts that you give.
In the fullness of time,
it's the only return that you expect.

November BSL featured Drugs Don’t Work program
Our Chamber
recently presented
“Why Be a Certified
Drug Free
Workplace?”
Business Success
Luncheon to local
Chamber businesses.
Speaker Chuck Wade
explained why the
current method of
trying to cut off the drug supply was not working.
Wade stated that the government has spent billions
of dollars to stop drugs from coming into the U.S.
and to stop the manufacture of drugs, to no avail.
The way to stop the problem is by stopping the
demand for illegal drugs. That is why the Georgia
legislature enacted the Drugs Don’t Work program
with its many benefits.
Wade also encouraged attendees to contact government
leaders and give opinions concerning the dangers of
legalizing marijuana. He referenced the Denver Post
article of what has happened in Colorado since
legalizing marijuana, especially with children bringing
the substance to school.
Call or email Joan Finch, Carroll Chamber DDW
Coordinator, at 678-890-2352 or [email protected]
for more information on becoming a Drug Free
Workplace to save 7.5% on workers compensation
insurance, cut workers comp claims and improve
employee productivity.

Are there enterprising high school students in west

business even farther while I’m in the engineering
program there.”
The 14-week Academy included sessions focused on
writing a business plan, business operations,

skills, attracting investors and leadership skills. Each
session was led by a professional from such
organizations as the Georgia Tech Enterprise
Innovation Institute, UWG’s Richards College of
Business (RCOB), the Small Business Development
Center and Georgia Dept. of Economic
Development.
As the finalist for the first Academy class, John received
a cash voucher and will have six months of free business
assistance from The Burson Center and their partners.

contagious – catch it today!

within the varied industries and businesses located throughout Carroll County.

talents to the table to better serve the Chamber
membership.
Name: Leonard Woolsey
Business: Times-Georgian
Title: Publisher
Chamber Committee Service: Past Chairman, Carroll County Chamber
What was your motivation
for serving as a member of
the Board of Directors for
the Chamber? Service to
your community is a privilege -- not a commitment. To
be able to work with others in the community
to make a positive difference in the community is something I feel strongly about and
the chamber is the perfect place to be.
How does your unique role in your business/industry benefit your service to the
Chamber? I hope that with my background
in communications I can lend a hand to any
chamber member (or the chamber itself) in
better getting their messages out to the community. Service to the members is one of the
greatest benefits of membership.
What leadership skills do you see exhibited
by members of the Chamber Board? Selflessness. To a person, I witness the busiest
and most committed people I know, come together for the good of the community. I'm
very proud of those I
serve with on the Carroll
County Chamber of Commerce board.
In your opinion, what is
the single greatest advantage of Chamber
membership? Helping
others -- be it a business
or community effort. The
chamber is so much more
than all about business -the chamber is really
committed to improving
our community on all levels. Education, workforce, economic development, leadership -the chamber is always at the table to contribute.
Just for fun, when you were a kid, what
did you want to be when you grew up? A
professional baseball player...and I've not yet
thrown in the towel. I am always holding out
hope the Braves might still call with each
coming spring training.
