Families and youth were hopping around
U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden’s Clay
Kaserne in search of candy-filled eggs,
facts, and figures during the American Red
Cross Easter Egg scavenger hunt, March 19.
This non-traditional egg hunt was organized to bring attention to the Red Cross
history, mission and programs in Wiesbaden
and worldwide, said Bethany Haworth, station manager, USAG Wiesbaden Red Cross.
With baskets and mobile phones in hand,
14 teams gathered at the Red Cross, ready
to hit the streets to decipher clues, collect
colorful eggs with puzzle pieces inside, and
learn more about an important international
service and relief organization along the way.
“Maintain your excitement,” said
Haworth, as she explained how the egg hunt
would work. “Some locations are closer, and
some are farther away,” she said.
The event started with a frenzy of activity
as team members rummaged through stacks
of old Herald Union newspapers to find an
envelope with location clues. The Wright
family stayed indoors, where it was warm,
to strategize, while other teams just headed
out with clues in hand, and without a plan - a
strategy that worked for first place finishers,
Heidi Clemons and her son Kyle.
At each of the 11 locations, teams had to
answer a Red Cross trivia question.
“Name one class the Wiesbaden Red
Cross teaches?” asked Earle Small, a volunteer manning the Health Clinic location.
“CPR,” said Shane Steenberge, collecting another egg for his sons Connor and
Quinn who came along for the ride. Together
with wife, Sarah, their team now had three
eggs before departing for the next location.
“The hardest question was listing the Red
Cross four-step blood donation process,”
said Aspen Tallent, which includes registering, a mini-physical, donating blood, and
refreshments.

In memory of Juergen Maier
U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden regrets to announce the recent passing
of a beloved colleague and friend, Juergen Maier, after a prolonged illness.
Maier was a lead driver training instructor at the Logistics Readiness Center. He worked in U.S. Army Europe since 1981 serving both the Heidelberg
and Wiesbaden communities for more than 33 years. He was a long-term
member of the district-level local national Works Council. His passing is met
with great sorrow for all that knew and worked with him.

U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden community members are reminded to
remain vigilant and practice personal protection measures at all times. If
you see something, say something immediately, call the MP desk at (0611)
705-114 or the Polizei at 110. Visit the USAREUR Reporting Portal at http://
www.eur.army.mil/eureport/default.asp.
Personal protective measures:
– Stay informed via official channels, news reports, etc., about current
potential threats.
– Avoid large public gatherings such as demonstrations or rallies. If you
encounter such gatherings, leave the area as quickly as possible.
– Keep a low profile and try to “blend in” to the local environment. In
public, avoid wearing or carrying overtly American or military clothing or
other items.
– Be unpredictable. Vary routines such as routes and departure times to
and from work.
– When traveling, become familiar with local emergency numbers and
places that could serve as refuge, such as a military installation, embassy or
police station. Learn or carry a few key phrases in the local language, such
as “I need a police officer” or “I need a doctor.”
– Instruct your family and associates not to provide strangers with information about you or your family.
– When leaving office or home, be sure to tell someone where you’re
going and when you expect to get there.
Crime Prevention
Protect your home by taking the following measures:
– When not present, lock doors and windows (close rolladens).
– Ensure proper exterior lighting (motion sensors). Leave a light on
inside your home.
– Do not open your home to solicitation attempts.
– Report any suspicious activity in the neighborhood.
At events
– Carry bags and purses with the flap or lock side closest to your body.
– Do not leave bags, purses or jackets unattended or draped over the back
of a chair as a thief will take advantage of your inattention to strike.
– Large crowds bring out pickpockets. Avoid becoming a victim by taking
a few precautions: Carry only the necessary cash, debit, or credit cards to
accomplish your planned task and distribute your cash, cards and cell phone
in different locations on your body to avoid losing everything.
Off-post uniform wear reminder
Wearing uniforms off-post is prohibited. There are only a few exceptions to the no uniform wear off-installation restriction. Uniform wear is not
authorized while riding motorcycles/scooters, bicycles or while on foot, or
any form of public transportation. Carrying backpacks or other items that
convey Department of Defense affiliation is discouraged. DoD personnel in
off-installation hotels may wear uniforms when departing or arriving in an
enclosed vehicle, but uniform wear in public areas of hotels such as breakfast,
dining rooms or fitness rooms is prohibited. Wearing uniform while escorting
children to/from or waiting at off-installation DoDDS bus stops is prohibited.

As Soldiers must be versed in a variety of warrior tasks
outside of their primary military occupational skill, competitors
were expected to be proficient in more than 40 Warrior Tasks and
Battle Drills, but didn’t know which seven they would face until
they entered the STX lanes.
In addition to the difficulty levels of each individual event, the
Soldiers battled fatigue and injuries as the competition allowed
for minimal rest time.
For some, the final event, a 12-mile timed road march, proved
to be the most difficult task. Soldiers were required to carry a
35-pound rucksack, wear their Improved Outer Tactical Vest
and finish the march in less than three hours to receive points.
This would be the competitors’ final opportunity to rack up
points in hopes of winning Installation Management CommandEurope’s Best Warrior, a title which meant something different
to each person.
For some it was to prove they were among the best, for others
it was a chance to refine Soldier skills to become a better troop.

were worth it.

Wiesbaden honors women in public service
Dr. Susan Hargis, Wiesbaden Middle School
Principal, reminds Soldiers and civilians that it
is a privilege to be a female, and a gift to be a
public servant during the Wiesbaden National
Women’s History Day event speech at the Tony
Bass Auditorium, March 24.

U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs
Positive female role models are key to inspiring
women to continue breaking barriers and glass ceilings in life and public service.
That was the message guest speaker, Dr. Susan
Hargis, Principal, Wiesbaden Middle School shared
during the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden’s Women’s
History Month event at the Tony Bass Auditorium on
Clay Kaserne, March 24.
Growing up in the deep south, Hargis said she
can’t count the number of women who have mentored her in her life. “There are too many,” she said.
She has learned from her grandmother, girlfriends,
neighborhood women, mothers of friends, and even
Oprah she said.
“She [Oprah] taught us how to treat other women.
Women don’t compete with each other. We don’t
put each other down. We aren’t the enemy,” she said
recalling just one lesson she learned growing up
watching Oprah.
Hargis calls this the ‘Oprah effect’, or womenfriend effect, and believes today’s young women
aren’t getting a daily dose of being empowered and
in turn empowering other women to do great things.
“We support, we lift, we love, and we comfort
each other. We help each other get to the next rung on
the ladder,” she said emphasizing the importance of
having a network of female friends and role models
throughout life in order to pull one another up to that
glass ceiling.
As an educator, Hargis speaks and interacts with
children all day and knows the responsibility and duty
that comes with public service.
“What we say impacts people, and as public servants we are in the spotlight,” she said, “We have to
be careful.”
This year’s event focused on honoring women who
have shaped America’s history and its future through
public service and government leadership.
Hargis said she was shocked to find that many
achievements by women in public service have taken
place in only the last 100 years.
The ratification of the 19th Amendment, which
gave women the right to vote took place in 1919,
only 97 years ago.
Throughout history, women in public service have
influenced public policy, championed human rights
and led the way to establishing a stronger and more
democratic society.
“Surely women serving in the military had something to do with Congress passing that amendment,”
she said.
In 1976 women entered the military service academies for the first time and in 2016 all military occupations and positions opened to women. Of the 1.46
million active duty members, 15 percent are female,
of which 161,415 are enlisted; 39,277 are officers;
and in 2016, three are Army Rangers.
During the event volunteers recognized a few of the
2016 National Women’s History Month honorees by
reading their biographies and highlighting the diversity
of challenges women in public service have faced.
We’ve come a long way, said Hargis encouraging
Soldiers and civilians to think of ways to move forward
to inspire young girls to make a difference.
“The glass ceiling that we often talk about, it’s just
a little shattered – the glass is still not broken yet,” said
USAG Wiesbaden Garrison Commander Col. Mary
Martin during her remarks at the event.
“In order to break any ceilings or make any change,
we have to do it together. The road we travel is still
a road to travel, and in all things we do, we must do
them together,” Martin added.
The event was hosted by the U.S. Army Garrison
Wiesbaden Equal Opportunities Office. To see the
full list of 2016 honorees, visit the National Women’s
History Project at www.nwhp.org.

Members of Brownie Troop 86 collect a puzzle piece at the Military Police Station on Clay Kaserne from
Lisa Ross, special events lead, U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Red Cross, during the Red Cross Easter egg
scavenger hunt, March 19.
“She was overthinking it,” said her
father, Christopher. “She got two of the
steps [correct].” The Tallent family, a fiveman team, said they encountered technical
difficulties during the hunt yet finished in
second place.
The Stankovich family, a four-man
team, finished in third place.
Teams were allowed to use mobile
phones when they were stumped. Using
internet searches and some lucky guesses,
participants learned that 40 percent of the
nation’s blood supply is provided by the
Red Cross; and the red crescent, and red diamond are two other symbols that are used
to identify the international organization.
Most importantly, after solving their
final location clue, teams learned that the
Wiesbaden Red Cross recently moved to
building 1201 on King Avenue.
More than 18 volunteers assisted
with the event including Red Cross Youth
program members Ian Snell and Kristen
Henry, who helped write the challenging
trivia questions and handed out eggs at the
Arts and Crafts center location.
When not volunteering for events like
this, Snell works with the Disaster Speaks
summer program to teach kids how to
prepare for a disaster and what to do if
one happens.
First, second, and third place finishers
all received a basket of Red Cross goodies
and prizes donated by Family and MWR
and Little Italy.
Connor Steenberge stomps around the mess in the hall of building

Garrison leaders get lesson in history
By Emily Jennings
U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden
Public Affairs
U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden staff leadership took a
step back in time to get a better
understanding of the military
history in the area and how that
knowledge can help them serve
their community today.
Directors toured the reconstructed Roman fort of Saalburg,
about 33 miles northeast of
Wiesbaden, March 21, learning
from the guide, and each other,
about a military stronghold in
the ancient empire, and how
although there are obvious differences between the troops’
lives and security strategies from
then versus now, there are a surprising number of similarities.
The Romans built fences,
walls and ditches, to provide an
obstacle for would-be attackers,
but also to be able to keep tabs
on what went in and out of their
territory (think today’s ACPs,
fencing, customs).As far as force
protection, physical security and
installation access, technology is
really the biggest change, said
Lt. Col. Michael Zink, Director
of Emergency Services.
“They had to rely on torches,
hand signals and flags to relay
messages,” he said. “The way
we do physical security and
force protection has really just
changed with electronics.”
Without electronics, they
used other things such as animals,
which can be much less reliable.
They brought in and stored
provisions, which could be
compared to our exchange and
commissary, although without
the selection we enjoy today.
Grain was an essential part of
the soldiers’ rations.
The barracks of the time,
contuberniums, or 8-man tents,
didn’t afford much personal
space to Roman soldiers, who
were not allowed to marry until
they retired. There was room for
sleeping, storage of weapons
and equipment and a handmill,
used to grind their daily rations
for breadmaking.
The Romans were more
advanced than one might expect
for years in the double and triple
digits. Evidence can be seen
on the grounds of underfloor
heating, a system by which an
outside furnace produces heat,
which passes through channels
underneath the floor tiles and
up the wall.

Directors learned about ancient military history on a tour of the reconstructed Roman
fort of Saalburg March 21 near Bad Homburg. While there they got an in-depth lesson
in Roman history and shared research in their respective fields, comparing the ancient
empire to how we do things today.
The empire was very multicultural, Sgt. 1st Class Brittney
Pechie learned. It was not just
a place where people had different beliefs and came from
different backgrounds, things
that our army is accustomed to,
but it welcomed soldiers who
spoke different languages and
came from different parts of
‘Big Windy’ lends muscle to 44th Signal Battalion
the world. They appeared to
be very accepting of diversity.
“That is something that we
could probably learn from [the
Romans]” she said.
Garrison Commander Col.
Mary L. Martin highlighted the
importance of looking at the
similarities between our garrison and the Roman garrisons
to help streamline the way we
do things.
“How do we get back to
simplistic?” she said. “The
Romans may have some lessons
to teach us on how to be simple
versus being so broad and bring
things back down to normal so
we can do what we do with the
right amount of people.”

Two local CAP cadets receive annual awards
By Ramstein Cadet Squadron,
Wiesbaden Flight
Two local Civil Air Patrol cadents recently recieved
annual awards for their efforts with the local flight.
Cadet Keiran Smith, Ramstein Cadet Squadron,
Wiesbaden Flight, received the prestigious Air Force
Association’s “Civil Air Patrol Outstanding Squadron
Cadet of the Year Award.”
The Air Force Association’s award is bestowed
upon the one cadet per squadron who has displayed
superior performance during the year.
Smith, a cadet chief master sergeant, showcased
exemplary leadership skills as well as academic excellence. He was one of the many outstanding cadets
considered for this achievement. Smith efforts were
recognized by the selection and highlighted his merits
that contributed significantly to the Wiesbaden Flight’s
success during the past year with his maturity, skill,
ingenuity and willingness to take on progressively
responsible duties.
As with many of the cadets and their positively
infectious attitude — was among another reason that
Wiesbaden Flight’s Cadet, Cadet Master Sergeant
Lena McFarland, earned the Ramstein Cadet Squadron
NCO of the Year award. She demonstrated high moral
character, professionalism in appearance and action,
and outstanding achievement in the cadet program.

Learning a sport to enjoy for a lifetime
Rheinblick Golf Course
offers events and classes
By Karl Weisel
U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Marketing Office
Although only a 15-minute drive from downtown
Wiesbaden, the Rheinblick Golf Course may be one of
the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden’s best-kept secrets.
“This is one of the prettiest golf courses that you’ll
find in Germany,” said Jerry Beierschmitt, Rheinblick
Golf Course superintendent.
Besides the view from its location high over the
Rhein River Valley above vineyards and set in a forested
area just outside of Wiesbaden-Frauenstein, “one of the
things that makes Rheinblick special is the difficulty
of the golf course,” Beierschmitt said. “The nice view
comes at a price. The course is in fantastic condition
but can be difficult at times with the hills — along
with some challenging greens.”
But even with some challenging greens, the course
welcomes players of all ages and skill levels with a
host of classes, tournaments and opportunities for
individual and group activities.
“Golfing is most definitely a family activity,”
Beierschmitt said. “It is a sport for the whole family
to play together … an activity the family can go out
and do without any outside distractions (while) getting
some exercise and fresh air.”
It’s also great for building resiliency, Family and
MWR officials stated, noting the positive impact of
getting away from the stresses of daily life, individual
accomplishments and team-member sharing on the
greens.
Rheinblick offers several programs to help new
players get started. Their Get Golf Ready Program
features a series of five, beginner-friendly lessons
taught by the professional staff at the golf course for
$99. With sessions starting April 18, May 16, June
13, July 11 and Aug. 29, community members can
join fellow golfers to learn the fundamentals and to
get started on this life-long pastime.
Juniors ages 7-17 can also pick up the skills needed
to enjoy the game of golf during Professional Golf Association Sports Academy classes offered throughout
the spring and summer months.
“We offer a full tournament schedule for the year
with our three signature events,” Beierschmitt said.
“The Rheinblick Open, which is a three-day event,
is held on the July Fourth weekend. Then comes the
two-day Club and Stroke Play Championship held
Sept. 3-4. September also brings competitive spirit
out as we have the Army-Air Force challenge Match
Sept. 17-18 – a two-day event held in conjunction
with Ramstein.
“Then we offer what we call the ‘Blickster Series’
– four events with three different formats of play,” he
said. These include the Blickster Scramble on April 30,
Blickster Chapman on May 28, Blickster Shamble Best
Ball July 30 and Blickster 18-Hold Challenge Aug. 27.
Cost to enter any of these Blickster events is $20
for members, $35 for U.S. ID cardholder non-members
and $75 for all others.
“Along with these events, we have Community
Scrambles and Friday Night Scrambles throughout the
Golfers work on their swing at the Rheinblick
Golf Course driving range.
year for all levels of golfers to enjoy,” Beierschmitt said.
The Community Scrambles are held every Monday at 6 p.m. May through August (except training
holiday weekends) and are open to four-person teams
for a competitive nine-hole scramble. Friday Night
Scrambles likewise start at 6 p.m.
Those who discover they really like the game of
golf will want to consider becoming a Rheinblick Golf
Course member to save money and enjoy other benefits.
“When you become a member of Rheinblick your
green fees are free for the year. So you can come
play as much as you want to without paying a green
fee,” Beierschmitt said. “You’ll also receive a coupon
book worth more than $150, along with discounts on
tournament entries.
“But on top of that, if you go to other military golf
courses in Germany, you will receive a discount on
your green fees there,” he added.
Another best-kept secret about the Rheinblick
is its welcoming Golf Restaurant with a patio area
where diners can enjoy the view over the course and
surrounding countryside. With an extensive menu
featuring inexpensive, traditional German cuisine,
steaks, Balkan specialties and breakfast, diners will
be sure to find something for every taste.
“Enjoy a nice meal in the clubhouse as a family,”
Beierschmitt said, after a round of golf – or just to
enjoy the serenity of location – set in the foothills of
the Taunus Mountains.
Hikers and bikers are also invited to set off from the
Rheinblick parking lot for some time in the woods, before returning for a meal at the Rheinblick Restaurant.
The Rheinblick Golf Course is located just off A-66
on Weisser Weg, 65201 Wiesbaden. For membership,
programs and other golf opportunities, call DSN 5485485 civ (0611) 143-548-5485 or visit www.wiesbaden.

A group of Wiesbaden High School
students is stepping up and volunteering
their time to make the transition to a new
school a little smoother for newcomers.
These Student Ambassadors learned
about how to help ease new classmates’
fears and make them feel welcome in their
new school at a training session March 24
at the Hainerberg Teen Center.
The purpose of the ambassador
program is to quickly meet the needs
of a transitioning student, said Undra
Marbury-Robinson, school counselor and
sponsor for the program.
“The goal of the program is for students
to engage in their community quickly,
smoothly and happily.”
And these Student Ambassadors are
there to help their new classmates do
just that.
Amani Robinson, a freshman who has
been part of the program since school
started, has been able to help several
students already, showing them around,
telling them about the school and bringing
them together.
“Two of them are best friends now,”
said Amani, who came from a German
school before.
The training focused on three needs
of incoming students: Information, to fit
in and friends.
They hope to accomplish that by anticipating questions new students might
have and preparing activities that will
help them feel at home.
Activities might include connecting on
social media, being paired with another
student, sort of like a sponsor, hosting
welcome and farewell parties and hanging
out at the teen center.
Tenth grader D’Netanya Bell began the
program this year and has already showed
a few new students around the school,
she said. Being a very social person has
made her an asset for incoming students
to make sure they feel welcome and know
where to go, she said. And so far, she has
seen her efforts pay off.
“Every new student that I’ve seen or
helped out has made new friends and
seems happy,” she said.
All this effort is to help make sure
newcomers are not only feeling connected

the community here, but also to be OK

Army warms up with cold training
By Sgt. 1st Class Crista Mack
U.S. Army Europe Public Affairs
Thermometers may be sub-zero but
in Norwegian winter, freezing is not an
option, combat action is not weather
dependent and a Soldier does not wait
for weather to warm up to react to fire.
For the first time, Soldiers from U.S.
Army Europe joined 16,000 military
personnel from 13 nations in Central
Norway’s Exercise Cold Response 2016
to conduct combat operations training
in extreme cold weather environments.
Joining the training were Company D,
2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment,
173rd Airborne Brigade, from Vicenza,
Italy, and 2nd Bn., 7th Inf. Regt., 1st
Armored Bde. Combat Team, 3rd Inf.
Division, from Fort Stewart, Georgia.
Cold Response is a Norwegian-led
exercise that rehearses high-intensity
operations in challenging winter conditions. The exercise involves more
than 3,000 U.S. service members;
approximately 6,500 members of the
Norwegian Armed Forces; and nearly
4,000 troops from 11 allied and partner
nations including Belgium, Canada,
Denmark, France, Germany, Latvia, the
Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden,
the United Kingdom, and close to 300
NATO personnel.
“This is an exercise where allies
come together and train in core competencies of air, land and sea; the land
core competency is high intensity warfare, most importantly combined arms
maneuvers, operating on both sides,
adding on the climate, which makes it
more difficult, and gives us good operational enhancement training for all
participating,” said Norwegian Lt. Col.

Soldiers from Company D, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade, traverse frigid terrain at Exercise Cold Response 16 in Namsos, Norway.
Aleksander Jankov, Norwegian Army
spokesperson for the exercise.
“We have different challenges in
Norway when it comes to climate and
topography than some of our other allied
partners,” Jankov said. “It’s important
to remember for every leader, (both)
junior and senior, that operating in cold
weather and snowy conditions may have
serious consequences although we are
not at war because the environment will
kill you if you don’t do the right things.”
In addition to learning to quickly and effectively operate in a frigid environment, this
exercise is a great opportunity to practice and
conduct training essential for security with
partner nations, said Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges,
commanding general, U.S. Army Europe.
“We are never going to be by ourselves,” Hodges said. “We are always
going to be part of a coalition, if not an
alliance, so the chance to practice with
our partners in Europe is a great opportunity to build trust and confidence.”
Canadian Lt. Col. Will Graydon,
commanding officer, 3rd Battalion,
Royal Canadian Regiment, operated as
exercise commander of a multinational
battle group commanded by a Swedish
brigade and in charge of a Canadian and
U.S. battalion.
“In my battalion, we’re not just
Canadians and Americans, we’ve got
Swedish and Norwegian Home Guard,
so we are already four nations within just
one battalion,” Graydon said. “We get to
work on interoperability, cohesion, and
building partnership, from all levels of
leadership. It demonstrates how easy it
is to build a team of like-minded nations
when you are focused on one goal.”

U.S. Army Europe
With terror attacks becoming more frequent, U.S. Army
Europe Soldiers, Department of
Defense civilians, contractors
and their family members have
a number of resources available
to stay vigilant and ready.
“The recent attacks that
we have seen in Brussels and
Turkey really highlight that
we are facing a significant and
persistent threat throughout the
theater,” said Robert Balcerzak,
deputy chief for U. S. Army Eu-
rope’s Antiterrorism Division.
Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, commanding general of U.S. Army
Europe, addressed the attacks
and recommended actions for
DoD personnel.
“I’m saddened by these attacks and my condolences go
out to the victims and families.
U.S. Army Europe will continue to stand by our Belgian allies ... indeed we must all stand
together in the face of these
terrorist attacks,” Hodges said.
“The reality of these attacks
highlights the need for us all to
be vigilant. I urge everyone to
be aware of their local security
situation, listen to AFN or local
news outlets and ensure you are
signed up for AtHoc with your
local Garrison so that you may
have the latest updates.”
Balcerzak similarly urged
watchfulness.
“You are the eyes and ears
for the United States Army
Europe, therefore if you see
something that you think is
suspicious, there are many
different vehicles with which
you can use to report,” he said.
“iReport is a downloadable
app that you can get on your
smartphone which would make
a quick way to report any sus-
picious activity, or you can go
online to any one of the USAREUR webpages to iWatch,
it’s the same mechanism. It’s
also important to know that if
you see something and it’s an
emergency, you need to call
an emergency number first,
reporting suspicious activity
is second to that. “
For individuals considering
what may be correct responses
or actions to take, Balcerzak
recommends the importance
of training such as the AntiTerrorism Awareness trainings

National Public Health Week: Healthiest Nation 2030
By Maj. Rosemary Wosky
Wiesbaden Army Health Clinic
The month of April brings with it National Public
Health Week, five days of reflection on the health of
our nation and the direction we plan to take to ensure
optimal health for all our citizens. We often consider
ourselves fortunate to be a part of a society with
superior health care, but there is still much to do to
become the Healthiest Nation by 2030. The truth is,
Americans live shorter lives and suffer more health
problems than their peers in other high-income countries. In fact, we rank 34th in terms of life expectancy
and yet we spend more health dollars per person than
any other nation. This strange imbalance is partially
due to lifestyle factors that we, as individuals, have
control over. It is no secret that our lives have become
more sedentary as we have shifted from manual labor
to high tech careers. Our diets have changed with a
higher reliance on processed food that is easy to cook
by busy, working people. The tobacco industry wants
your dollars and spends billions on advertising to
secure them. We are stressed. We take short cuts in
our sleep and often sacrifice moments of relaxation to
work on yet another project that life demands. During
this month, take time to consider how your health is
now and where you would like it to be in 2030. If you
think you need to change things up a bit, consider the
following daily tips to improve health during National
Public Health Week. Each day brings a new focus to
help build a healthier you, one step at a time.
Monday: Develop healthy habits
Eating balanced meals and exercising regularly
helps to prevent chronic diseases such as diabetes
and hypertension and protects your long-term health.
Today, start small. Try taking the stairs instead of the
elevator or walk around the block after lunch. Drink
water rather than sugary soda. Over time, turn these
actions into habits for your health.
Tuesday: Quit tobacco
If you use tobacco, make a plan to quit for goodquitting will help you live a longer, healthier life with
more time to spend with family and friends. Talk to
your provider about tobacco cessation programs and
support within your community.
Wednesday: Resolve to sleep more
Most adults need approximately 7-8 hours of
sleep per day to function at their peak performance.
Children need even more. Make a sleep routine and
stick to it, avoid drinking caffeinated products prior
to bedtime and keep technology out of the bedroom.
Thursday: Wash your hands more often
Handwashing is still the number one way to prevent the spread of infections such as coughs and
colds, food-borne illnesses and influenza.
Friday: Get vaccinated
Make sure you are up to date on your immunizations. Talk to your provider to learn which vaccinations you might need, including hepatitis A and B,
pneumococcal, MMR and shingles.
Living a long and healthy life is a goal we can
all strive for. Making small life style changes to improve our health can have a huge benefit over time.
Together, and in partnership with your health care
team, we can all work towards being the Healthiest
Nation by 2030. For more information about National
Public Health Week, visit Army Public Health Nursing at the PX Monday, April 4 from noon to 2 p.m.

Preventive Medicine employees practice what they preach
By Ashley Patoka
Regional Health Command - Atlantic
Employees from the Fort Drum MEDDAC Preventive Medicine Department
are ensuring they practice what they
preach through the implementation of a
healthy worksite initiative.
A group of about five employees
have committed to help each other eat
better, work out more and live a healthier
lifestyle.
They are doing this by pooling their
money to buy healthy food for snacks and
lunches during the work week, finding
time to walk within their schedule and
being active throughout the day, according
to Susan Mizgala, Fort Drum MEDDAC
Public Health nurse.
“We each contribute $10 a week, and
that gets us a salad for lunch and food to
make smoothies and have healthy snacks
for the whole work week,” Mizgala said.
Capt. Jeremy Brooks, Fort Drum’s
dietitian, is also part of this group. He
said he thinks it is important for people to
know and actually see that eating healthy
doesn’t have to cost a lot of money.
“I think one of the reasons we are doing this is to show that eating healthy, for
a low cost, is possible,” he said.
Mizgala, who understands the importance of a healthy lifestyle, had some
personal reasons for wanting to participate
in this program.
“I have a couple of reasons why I did
this — personal reasons,” Mizgala said.
Page 14
Herald Union
“One, for my heart health, I do monitor
my blood pressure. Both of my parents
have high blood pressure, and mine was
in the pre-hypertensive zone. Since doing
this program, my blood pressure is great;
it averages around 110 over 70. I have
also had my cholesterol checked — the
provider I saw said she hadn’t seen a
cholesterol level that good in a long time.”
Brooks said he hopes this is a concept
that offices across the installation, not just
the MEDDAC, can adapt.
“This is really about trying to incorporate health and fitness into our workplace,
because for most of us, we spend more
time in our work environment than we
do at home, and if we don’t incorporate a
healthy lifestyle into our work life, making
the change will be a challenge,” he said.
“Being Preventive Medicine, we
are really the tip of the spear of health
and wellness — so we wanted to set the
example … to show that healthy eating
and wellness can exist in our busy environment,” Brooks added.
Joining together with co-workers not
only provides the accountability that so
many people look for when starting a new
healthy lifestyle, it also helps when keeping the food choices interesting.
“Having multiple people involved,
with different ideas and bringing in different food items, helps because we get
to experience more of a variety,” Mizgala said. “This has been easy, and it has
worked well for us. You just have to be
creative within your work environment.”
Mizgala also said that this takes the
guesswork out of what she will eat for
lunch each day.
“This is a huge benefit when it comes
to having your healthy lunch available. I
was usually so busy that I came to work
without lunch. At lunch time, I would get
something quick and easy to eat, which
was not always the healthiest choice.
This program has not only improved my
health, but has saved me a lot of money
as well,” she said.
What the staff at Preventive Medicine
is doing is just an example of what can
be done when employees put their ideas
together and set a goal.
In addition to eating better, the staff at
PM is also using their 15-minute breaks to
get in a quick walk and taking their lunch
break at the gym. They have adjusted their
days so they get up more and move rather
than spending their entire day behind a
desk. Brooks said he is available to work
with any office — across the installation
— that would like to come up with ideas
on how to incorporate a similar program
into their workplace.
“Healthy eating doesn’t have to be
hard — there are a lot of ways to do it
and the tools are out there. I am available
to meet with different sections to work
with them to establish healthy worksites,”
Brooks said. “As long as employees are
sticking to their work schedules and are
back at their desks when they need to be
— possibilities are endless. This is about
empowering people to make a change and
giving them the opportunity to succeed.”
Brooks added that this is more than
just eating healthy, it’s committing to a
system of health that improves readiness, performance and resilience in our
employees.
“We are trying to change the culture.
We want to get everyone on board with
this; it will permeate to our patients.”

screwed over is so quick to forgive and forget. McCarthy is joined in The Boss by an all-star cast led
by Kristen Bell, Peter Dinklage and Kathy Bates. Directed by Ben Falcone (Tammy), the comedy is
based on an original character created by McCarthy and written by McCarthy and Falcone alongside their Groundlings collaborator, Steve Mallory. The film is produced by McCarthy and Falcone
through their On the Day productions and Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Chris Henchy through their
Gary Sanchez Productions.

Deadpool — Based upon Marvel Comics’ most
unconventional anti-hero, the movie tells the
origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who
after being subjected to a rogue experiment

BatmanVs. Superman: Dawn of Justice — Fearing the actions of a god-like superhero left
unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable,
forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most
revered, modern-day savior, while the world
wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs.
And with Batman vs Superman at war with
one another, a new threat quickly arises,
putting mankind in greater danger than it’s
ever known before.
Triple 9 — The story follows a group of thieves
who plan to kill a young LAPD officer to divert
the police away from a daring heist they’re
perpetrating across town. The title “Triple
Nine” refers to police code indicating that an
officer needs immediate assistance.
London has fallen — The sequel to the worldwide smash hit “Olympus Has Fallen,” a nonstop, suspenseful action thriller that delivers
high-octane excitement through a heightened
sense of authenticity. The visceral intensity
springs from a timely premise: after the British Prime Minister passes away, his funeral
becomes a target of a terrorist organization
to destroy some of the world’s most powerful leaders, devastate the British capital, and
unleash a terrifying vision of the future. The
only hope of stopping it rests on the shoulders
of the President of the United States (Aaron
Eckhart) and his formidable Secret Service
head (Gerard Butler), and an English MI-6
agent (Charlotte Riley) who rightly trusts no
one. Morgan Freeman also stars as the Vice
President of the United States.

Because we do have members who are not going

In addition to the alliance battles, there are three
awards that the Robowarriors are specifically trying
to qualify for: Innovation in Control, Excellence in
Engineering and Industrial Design. “Those [awards]
are determined by judges in the pit area. They ask
questions of the team and I’m not permitted to
participate in any way shape or form. It’s what the
students come up with,” said Pendzich.
The team is cautiously confident in their
chances. “When we left Orlando, it was a top
notch robot. We know we’re capable of high scores
because we scored one of the highest matches in
Orlando, and we were the highest scoring team
in that alliance,” said Pendzich. “I see big things
for us, but I try to temper that to make sure I
don’t jinx it.”
If Frau POW! 8 is in the top six alliances at
the Las Vegas competition, the Robowarriors will
qualify to attend the championship in St. Louis.

we’re really excited.”

2 tablespoons corn starch
1 cup of milk
8 ounces cheddar cheese, finely grated
2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Heat the oven to 300 F for a convection oven or 355 F standard oven.
Stir the sour cream, starch and milk together and set aside. Heat a pan
with oil. Add the mushrooms, roasting them on high heat for 3 minutes.
Add onions. Season with salt and pepper. Add sour cream mix. Let it simmer for 2 minutes. Add peas and half of the cheese. Let this simmer for
another minute.
In a casserole pan, mix potatoes, tuna and mushroom sauce. Bake for 60
minutes. As it bakes, mix chips with remaining cheese, and thyme leaves.
Add to the casserole when it has baked one hour. On top of chip mixture
add 5-6 small shavings of butter. Put back in oven for 15 minutes.
A nice side dish for this casserole is a green salad or cucumber salad.
This is definitely a modern German’s quick meal. The salt and vinegar
chips create a nice combination with the tuna.

History of Carnival in Rheinhessen
Thu, Mar 31
Mainz, Fastnachtsmuseum
Carnival is probably one of the strangest traditions you have come across
during your time in Germany and yes,
it’s basically 3 months of Halloween
and people call it the fifth season because they just love it that much. But
