Greetings,
It has now been five months since I was installed as the new commander of our great post. Since our new administration has taken over we have been progressively changing some things and have improved on others. Some changes have come about smoothly while others have taken some tweaking. Overall things are
working very well. It has been a learning process for all of us, but working as a team and with your support our post is moving in the right direction. One of our
biggest challenges is the kitchen. As with all equipment, maintenance must be performed and even then equipment gets old and must be replaced. We are in the
process of updating our kitchen while continuing to bring you quality food. We have gone through several chefs and I believe we have finally found the chef that
will provide excellent food. I would like to introduce Frank Aloia. Frank’s passion is cooking and has some great ideas on improving the food products that we
provide. Please make him feel welcomed as we expect that he will be a permanent addition to our post family. Frank working with our newly appointed kitchen
manager Bobby Jones aka “Jonesy” will be providing excellent quality food while maintaining the prices reasonable. Speaking of Bobby Jones, I can’t tell you
the debt of gratitude that is owed to him for all the hours that he volunteers to the post. Jonesy along with our 2nd Vice Commander Tommy Waters and Kenny
aka “Wooden Head” aka Kenny “One Tooth”, volunteer every Sunday morning to bring you an excellent breakfast. They continue to bring you the Sunday afternoon and evening menu served during the Sunday NFL games and Bingo. It should be noted that Jonesy is strictly a volunteer and is not compensated for his
time as the kitchen manager. Thank you Bobby Jones.
Just a brief recap of what we have accomplished to date. As you all know we have instituted entertainment on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. As time goes
on we will also include Saturdays. We did institute no smoking upstairs on Fridays during the dinner hour however the turnout was not what we expected. If the
turnout does not increase we will allow smoking during that period again. The Sons of the American Legion voted for and ordered the NFL Sunday Ticket which
gives our members the ability to watch any game on any one of four TVs, and of course the Legionnaires purchased the big screen where the home team and
other main games are shown. There are few if any sports bars who can boast about a 9 x 6 ft screen. Our MASH, Halloween and Half way to St. Patty’s Day
parties were very successful. The Marine Corps Birthday Celebration was a huge success and I would like to plan similar events to celebrate the birthdays of the
other services. The Veterans Day ceremony was very moving and was featured on the front page of the Observer. We had a successful Golf Tournament and
those who attended had a good laugh watching me attempting to just hit the ball let alone keeping it from slicing. I can brag that I had the shortest drive, minus
5 feet. The Thanksgiving Dinner was absolutely wonderful and my Mary and Jessica should be congratulated on how beautiful the upstairs was decorated. The
tables were decked out in white linen and fresh flowers were placed on every table. Last but not least we have set up and established a post website thanks to the
hard work and dedication of Beth Francis our Chaplain.
So what do we have planned for the future? Well we are going to be opened on Christmas day and my wife and I will be the guest bartenders so please come and
join us. The New Year’s Party has been planned and reservations for the upstairs are being taken by Mary. We are planning a Casino Night, Luau and St. Patty’s
Day parties. Also check the flyers that are posted as other parties and events pop up from time to time. I should mention that we owe a special thanks to our
daytime bartender Connie who planned all our special parties such as MASH, Halloween, Casino Night, and Luau. I sometimes have to rein her in or there
would be a party every day.
In closing I ask that you continue to support our post. Stop in have a cocktail, enjoy a meal or just say hello. May you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy
and Prosperous New Year.
For God and Country
Eddie Cruz
Commander
S.A.L. COMMANDER
Dear Members:
By the time you have read this, we will have celebrated the Marines Birthday, our Annual Post Picnic, and Thanksgiving. These are all special events for the Post. They would never by possible without the dedication of our Commander, Eddie Cruz, the
Veterans, the Auxiliary, and the S.A.L. It always seem to be the same people that make these special days a success. It goes without saying,
their efforts and hard work is truly appreciated………….thank you.
Membership: I don’t know what is going on this year. We still have over 115 members that have not paid their 2009 dues. For those members that are still up north, you can mail your dues ($25.00) to me, Jerry Mann, 810 SE 7th Street, #403-A, Deerfield Beach, FL 33441. I will
mail back to you your new 2009 card with your new door key. We have always reached 100% in membership, I hope we continue to be the
leader in our District, right now it doesn't look too good!!
We now have a brand new stove in our kitchen thanks to the S.A.L. and the Auxiliary. Our share was $720. We also purchased a Paver for
our departed brother, Dennis Lavin. Another $250.00 was donated to the Children’s Christmas Fund. The goal of the S.A.L. is to support our
Post, support our Commander, and show continued respect to the Veterans that make our membership possible. Without them we would never
be called Sons of the American Legion! Special thanks to Ray “The Roofer” Arrair, Pat & Dave Harris, Ray Cardillo, Tom Figueora, and
Anna Foster, who is always there with a helping hand, and the S.A.L. volunteer members who give of their time when need be…..it’s great to
be a giver and not a taker? Sorry, I almost forgot “Wooden-Head”!
Special Intentions: Our prayers and memories are with the families of Lorenzo Correnti, Neil MacArthur, and Ron “Jeff” Gendreau, who
passed away this November. May God bless our brothers.
We are all so fortunate to have such a great Post. The S.A.L. will always do their share to make sure our Post stays that way. Wishing you all
a beautiful Christmas and with God’s help, a better 2009. As always, it’s a Privilege.
Jerry Mann
S.A.L. Commander
UNIT PRESIDENT
A huge, warm Thank You to all who participated in our Angel Tree program for the needy children at Christmas. We certainly appreciate all
you did to help these children have a Happy Holiday.
The Auxiliary is still working many of our programs. Our Education Chairman, Ann Newman, has been in contact with the with Bright Horizons School and we will be working to help the handicapped children at that school. Christmas decorations were donated there for the families that needed them. Coupons for the Troops! So far, we have sent over $27,000 worth of coupons for our active military to use and are still
working that project. In addition, we sent 300 pocket flags to the active military also. Our Junior members have visited the veterans at Sandy
Nininger Veterans Nursing Home and took gifts to them. These two young ladies are very well liked by the veterans there!
The Southern Area will be having a Membership Rally on January 10th at Post 142 in Pompano from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The Department
President, Kathee Coughlin, and Department Secretary, Robin Briere, will be there to count. The 9th District will be having an ABC
(Auxiliary Basic Training) School on January 11th at Post 142 in Pompano. Registration starts at 8:30 am and the school will start at 9:00 am.
Why attend? To learn all programs and phases of the American Legion Auxiliary. Instructor - Maureen Costello.
Janaury is the month of Legislative and National Security Programs. Under the Legislative Program, though lobbying efforts, the American
Legion and American Legion Auxiliary are able to influence legislation of benefit to veterans, the community and our nation. If you are writing any letters, sending e-mails or calling any of our local, state, or national politicians, please let the Auxiliary know so we can include it in
our year end reports.
The National Security Program is not only for defense strong enough to guarantee the security of our nation, it also includes protection from
natural disasters and crime. The local CERT program to help people prepare to hurricane disasters would come under National Security as
well as assisting our active military members. Let us know if you are involved in any of these activities.
February is Americanism Month. Fly your Flag, Patriotic Education to our children and youth, teach them how to salute the flag and recite
the Pledge of Allegiance, how to properly fold a flag and flag etiquette. There is much more to the Americanism Program but anything you
do to perpetuate the American ideals comes under this program.
Our meetings are on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm. I look forward to seeing you all there.
Yours in service,
Elaine Kledzik
President
Next BLOOD DRIVE and Auxiliary Bake Sale
Saturday, Feb. 7th, TIME 10AM To 3PM.
2009 Dates” Feb 7th—April 11th-June 13th-Oct. 10th-Dec 12th
If there is a date change, Emails will be sent all donors that we have this info on plus it will be posted on the
Events Board as you walk into the post towards your left.
THANK YOU TO ALL OUR 25 BLOOD DONORS WHO CAME OUT DEC. 13TH. WE WERE ABLE TO
COLLECT 23 PINTS!!
We Want To Thank All Of Our Blood Donors Who Take That Extra Time To Come Out And Save A Life!
A KIND REMINDER TO OUR MEMBERS HERE AT POST #162 WE HAVE VERY LOYAL BLOOD DONORS AND WE
ARE GRATEFUL, BUT DUE TO MEDICAL REASONS, OPERATIONS AND RX CHANGES, WE DO LOSE DONORS.
ON OUR NEXT BLOOD DRIVE IT WOULD BE GREAT TO SEE SOME NEW FACES, FOR EVERY PINT OF BLOOD
DONATED YOU ARE SAVING 3 LIVES. FROM TIME TO TIME WE WILL COLLECT PLATELETS (On the 2nd floor
Dining Lounge) JUST ASK ON THE DAY OF THE DRIVE, "It will be Posted on the Elevator.”
BE SURE TO VISIT POST 162 WEBSITE AT:
www.dfbpost162.org
Each month, the Revielle will be posted in its entirety on
the website as well as updates during the month.
PLATELETS: are essential to aid in the clotting process to help control bleeding and are used to treat cancer/leukemia
patients undergoing chemotherapy, bleeding disorders, organ transplants, and trauma. Platelets must be transfused
within 5 days of donation, so the supply requires constant replenishment. That is why platelets are in such need. It
takes several people donating whole blood to produce a pint of platelets. Aphaeresis blood donors can donate a pint of
platelets in one donation. Cancer/Leukemia patients when going thru chemotherapy need platelet transfusion one to two
times a week. Because cancer patient's immune systems are so low a common cold could be critical. It is safer for
them to receive a platelet transfusion from one person rather than receiving the platelets from several people that donated whole blood. All blood types are universal platelet donors.
Please remember if you get a call from the Blood Bank directly to donate, let them know you are already on the call list
At the American Legion Post #162 and ask them to put you back on the no call list. I found out it seems the no call list
only last 6 months and they will start calling you after that if they have your phone number. One way to avoid this from
happening is when you enter the bus please do not give out your phone number on the bus, they can and will contact
you by mail.
ANOTHER REMINDER: Do not go to Sample Road to donate. We need YOU at our Blood Drive which is every
56 to 63 days. We do our own calling, to remind past donors of the next Blood Drive. If we have omitted anyone and
you want to be reminded of the next Blood Drive, we can put you on the call list. Phone number: 561-393-7170 or
Email: [email protected].
Take note :0) we need updates on email addresses, some of you have new info and you are not getting the
emails we send out.
Donating Blood is Saving A Life: The Blood Banks are and have been for sometime at a record low! When you’re on
the bus, sign up for the drawing at 3pm. Enjoy the Lunch Buffet: 12 noon tiI 2:30. Everyone should eat after donating!
Before Donating Remember NO! Drinks with Caffeine! This will lower your iron level and you won't be able to give!
Drink 100% Juices and No Booster Drinks! They are full of Caffeine. Eat Raisins & Fresh Fruit before donating; this will
boost your Iron Level. Donors should expect on the Bus to be checked for iron level, your blood pressure will be
checked and a Cholesterol Test. These test alone are life saving info for you and another good reason to come on out
on the day of the Blood Drive!
Stay well & See you Saturday, FEB.7th, Time 10AM TO 3PM, Lunch 12 TO 2:30
A Very Happy & Healthy New Year to All!
Michael & Barbara Gagliardi, Chuck Gallagher, Virginia Wood and Sherri Wanger
