Welcome...
Its summer time - almost! Time to dig out the flip-flops and start drinking Pimms and
Lemonade in the garden. Summer is also festival season and first up we have two drama
events; the All England Theatre Festival in May and six nights of free entertainment
with the Haverhill Drama Festival in June.
The Haverhill Festival returns in fine form with favourites such as Herman’s Hermits
and Bee Gees Magic, as well as a breathtaking performance by the Tashi Lhunpo
Tibetan Monks who will give a spectacular insight into their ancient traditions and rituals.
Sci-fi and comedy fans who are tired of travelling to the Dark Side of the country to
attend Star Wars conventions can save their petrol money because Charles Ross and
his internationally famous interpretation of the Star Wars trilogy is coming to Haverhill!
If you prefer your sci-fi and comedy Brit-style Norman Lovett and Hattie Hayridge
(both of whom played Holly in Red Dwarf) join forces in June for what The Edinburgh
Evening News describes as a ‘side-splittingly funny’ show.
It’s a great season for children’s and family shows; there is for example a new take on
The Elves and the Shoemaker by Theatre of Widdershins and a non-classic reworking
on the Lewis Carroll classic with Alan in Wonderland, the White Rabbit might not make
an appearance but there is a rather large helping of goats! Look out for our Family
Tickets to get the best deals (see information below).
You really know its summer when there is talk of Christmas! If you like to get organised
for the festive season well in advance, book now for the 2008 Panto, Dick
Whittington. Not only is it one thing to cross off the Christmas to-do list but you’ll be
saving money too!
Best wishes

Art
The Galaxy Big Band
by Yasmina Reza, translated by Christopher Hampton
Tickets: £12.50
Tickets: £9.00 and £7.50 Concessions
Is a blank white canvas art? And how would your friends react to spending
200,000 francs on such an outrageous purchase? Serge has just bought
such a piece and soon lines are drawn as three old friends become
embroiled in increasingly personal arguments. A warm and witty exploration
of friendship, Art won the 1997 Olivier Award for Best New Comedy, and
has since gone on to enjoy more than 2,500 performances across the world.
‘A remarkably wise, witty and intelligent comedy . . . ‘Art’ has touched a
universal nerve.’ The Times
Treading in the footsteps of the big bands of the 1940s, The Galaxy Big
Band has established an enviable reputation for swing music, jive and jazz.
Band leader, Roger Chinery, heads up an 18 piece line-up of saxophones,
brass and rhythm as well as playing solo trumpet. A buffet meal is included in
the ticket price.

This uproarious farce follows the antics of the ladies of The Farndale Avenue
Housing Estate Townswomen's Guild as they tackle their latest theatrical
endeavour, Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta The Mikado. The ladies’
‘interpretation’ is tackled with their usual enthusiasm, despite the constraints of
casting and costume which produces hilarious mishaps, forgotten lines and
shameless scene-stealing.

A rare opportunity to witness a unique and endangered culture in a dramatic,

chant from Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, which was founded by the First Dalai Lama
in 1447. Buddhist texts, mantras, ringing bells, the clash of cymbals, the
booming of the great long horns and the beating of drums are complemented by
colourful traditional costumes, ceremonial masks and explanations which offer
an insight into the life of the monastery and its traditions.
The mid 60s music scene was dominated by
The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and
Herman’s Hermits. From their beginning in
Manchester in 1964 the band has chalked
up over 23 hit singles, 10 hit albums 3 films
