I am typing this column as I am sitting
outside, enjoying a beautiful August
morning, and the winter holidays seem
to be a long way off. However, now is
the time when you have to book venues
for the holidays, if you want to get a
good one, and we wanted to get a good
one this year. The club has had a great
year financially so far and we are in a
position to give back to our membership
by subsidizing a holiday party. So, I am
happy to officially announce that this
year’s holiday party will be held at the
Botanical Gardens on December 15th.
The Botanicals Gardens will provide a
perfect backdrop to this year’s party. We
have reserved the whole complex and will
have the run of the place. you will be able
to visit the spiny desert of Madagascar
and the butterfly-filled rainforest of
Costa Rica while enjoying a cocktail and
chatting with friends. We will be using
the Gardens caterer, Bon Appétit, for
dinner. Bon Appétit is not your typical
venue caterer. They specialize in creating
made-from-scratch distinctive menus
featuring regional, seasonal, & artisanproduced products. The gardens will be
decorated for the holiday, complete with
a gingerbread house display that is just
magnificent. It will be the perfect way to
escape our Cleveland December weather
to eat, drink, dance, and celebrate the
holidays together. The event is limited
to 150 people so even though it is a long
way off (and I’m sure you don’t want to
think about December at this point) I
strongly suggest you register early – it will
sell out! You can register online at http://
norpcaholiday2012.eventbrite.com.
While you are registering for the holiday
party, take a minute to also register for
our Marshall Goldman’s Wine Tasting and
BBQ. This is the 8th time Bill Polewchak
and Marshall Goldman’s have combined
forces to put on the event and it seems
to get better every year. I have known
Bill for years and he is by far the best chef
that I personally know. Anyone who is
friends with Bill on Facebook sees the
2
mouthwatering creations he cooks up.
For this event, Bill will serving up bbq
pork, sausage, and turkey. All of it is
smoked overnight and all his sauces and
rubs are created from scratch.
In addition to being a fabulous chef, Bill
is also a wine fanatic. Years ago I went
to San Francisco on vacation and took a
day trip to Napa. I asked Bill for a couple
recommendations, since he goes every
year, and he created a complete itinerary
for me of about six winery’s to go to, all
laid out on a map with a list of which
wines I had to try at each. It was on this
trip that I had the best wine I have had to
date – a Pinot Noir from ZD winery. That
trip made me a believer when it comes
to Bill’s wine knowledge. So in addition
to the food, Bill will also be bringing a
selection of 4-5 whites and about 5-6 reds
for a tasting. They will range from light
and fruity, to dry and structured. There’ll
be a couple of sweeter-style ones, but
most are food-oriented, to go with the
bbq.
So it you are a wine connoisseur, a fan
of bbq, happen to like walking around
a showroom filled with exotic cars, or
just like to hang out with fellow NOR
members, then this event is for you. It is
a pay-in-advance event ($15/person with
$5 going to charity) sine we have to buy a
lot of food and wine, so please register at
http://norpcabbq.eventbrite.com..

When You Wish Upon A Star…
.......wishes really do come true!
Since 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation® has enriched the
lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions
through its wish-granting work. The Foundation relies on
medical professionals, parents and the children themselves for referrals. The
Foundation determines a child’s medical eligibility with the help of the treating
physician. To receive a wish, a child must be diagnosed with a life-threatening
medical condition – i.e., a progressive, degenerative or malignant condition
that has placed the child’s life in jeopardy.
Since their inception, the Make-A-Wish Foundation® has granted 224,818 wishes! Northern Ohio Region Porsche Club members will have the opportunity to
help the Foundation grant more wishes in September. At its recent meeting,
the Club’s Board approved holding a fund-raising event at the upcoming Wine
Tasting & BBQ at Marshall Goldman Motors on Saturday, September 15th from
6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
The Charity Committee will be selling magnetic stars for $5 each. Your can
write your name on the stars which will be affixed to a Porsche Cayenne. We
hope to take a picture of event attendees and the Cayenne. In addition to helping a great charity, each star purchased will give members the opportunity to
win one of several raffle prizes which will be donated by local Porsche dealers
and Club members.
We’re always looking for prizes for charity events. If you would like to donate a
gift card, service or item, please contact Karen at [email protected] or June at [email protected]. We’re looking forward to seeing you on September
15th when we can all help to make a child’s wish come true!
Special thanks to the Club members who attended the Rib Burn Off at Mike
Garriga’s home on August 25th. As suggested, members brought cans of soup
and other items for the benefit of the Cleveland Food Bank. Items weighed in
at 245 pounds!! We also received a check from an NOR member which will provide 100 meals! These donations will help keep needy folks warm and fed on
our cold Cleveland winter nights. Thank you for your generosity which warms
our hearts! Please note, the social planned for October has been postponed.
We will inform you when there will be another opportunity to donate to the
Cleveland Food Bank.

NOR-PCA Voices from the Trunk
Boxsters in the Blue Ridge
by Kevin & Bev Rohrer
Since 1998, Boxster owners have had the unique
experience of getting together for a weekend of
picturesque surroundings, winding roads, good
food, and camaraderie that only Porsche owners
can experience. That year, Boxsterers who had
been virtually-gathering on the PPBB site decided on a physical get-together for Boxster owners only. They chose a location in the Blue Ridge
Mountains of North Carolina along the 469-mile
long Blue Ridge Parkway. And what started as a
one-time event has become an annual tradition
for anyone driving Porsche’s most accessible
sports car. Although the locations have changed
over the years as the event grew in attendance,
the BRBS has, according to its participants, stayed
fresh and well worth attending.
Bev and I bought our first Porsche this Spring and
wanted to christen the new-to-us ‘S’ by attending
an event specifically for our car. The stars aligned
themselves and we learned of the Blue Ridge
Boxster Summit (BRBS) in plenty of time to make
our reservation. Although it was to be our first
BRBS, this year event was the fourteenth annual,
the first 12 years being held at various locations
in the Blue Ridge. In 2011, the planning committee decided it was time for a change of scenery,
and moved farther southwest along the Parkway
to a town that GPS says doesn’t exist: Little Switzerland. On May 31st, the Little Switzerland Inn
was the destination for eighty cars and 147-Boxsterers.
Although the event didn’t officially start until the
Thursday evening banquet, there was a pre-BRBS
event held during the morning hours. Early arrivers were treated to a group drive to nearby Lake
Lure, where they enjoyed a boat ride and lunch
at the Lake Lure Inn. We couldn’t attend that day
due to work and regretted not getting that extra
day of sightseeing.
However, on May 31st with hotel reservations
made and event fee paid, we cleaned the car and
packed until midnight, getting only five hours
of sleep before starting out at 6:30 a.m. riding
down I-77 as if on rails. Cruise Control worked
well, never varying our speed more than -2mph
to +1mph. We saw no bad driving or accidents,
but no Porsches either. The weather was decent
but cool, so the top stayed up until reaching NC,
so Bev could nap and watch movies on the iPad.
This was our first long drive with the top up, so I
paid attention to the noise levels inside the car.
Although the Boxster is not a hermetically sealed
Cadillac, we had no complaints about outside
noise levels.
We reached Beckley, WV at 10:30 a.m., stopping
for gas and food. By 3:15p.m. the Little Switzerland Inn came into view after an 8-hour and
15-minute trip, not including the stopover. The
September 2012
car performed flawlessly and the ride was reasonably smooth, even with 19” wheels! Finding
the Inn was pure luck, as neither of my GPS’ (a
Garmin 755T and Porsche PCM) knew the Inn’s
location or that Little Switzerland existed. The
Garmin found nearby Spruce Pine and from
there I was able to locate NC226A (aka The Diamondback) and the Inn.
Interestingly enough, we saw no Porsches along
the way until we were two miles out, when a red
Boxster fell in behind us. The parking lot was almost most full when we arrived, but we found a
spot and registered. Our second floor room in
the main lodge overlooked the parking lot and
had a small balcony. The room was well-furnished and comfortable, and we relaxed before
dinner.
The Little Switzerland Inn is an interesting place.
It is more than just a single inn. Instead, it is a
complex of buildings set in the trees on top of
a mountain, and its true size is difficult to gauge.
We didn’t do any local exploring but I saw a map
of the venue, which showed at least ten buildings scattered around the property. Some were
shops, a laundry, and maintenance; while the
rest were guest quarters, almost all looking out
across a valley to the next mountain. On a clear
day it was a breathtaking view.
At 4 p.m. we met everyone on the lawn behind
the Inn for a surprise treat: watching three of the
first 981s in the country drive up, they being part
of a PCNA promotional tour. Their appearance
was a big surprise and everyone ‘oohed’ and
‘awed’. Getting a first-hand look at these new
cars also shows the importance of gatherings
like the BRBS to PCNA.
The Summit’s opening night dinner was excellent as were all other meals at the Inn., most
of which were included in the event fee. The
amount of food available equaled it’s high quality. and no one went hungry.
The BRBS was well organized and run by a fourman committee who annually oversee it. Each
group meal included a discussion of the next
days’ itinerary. Our single day of bad weather
was scheduled for Friday, so the planning committee switched Friday and Saturday’s events to
allow for the weather. We enjoyed a few Venoms
(a local drink) after dinner and turned-in early to
prepare for our first event the next day.
It rained late Thursday evening and into Friday
morning, so the day began with heavy fog that
got even heavier as the morning progressed. It
was so thick the annual Show & Shine (a nonConcours car show) was cancelled as no one was
able to see the cars!
9
Boxsters in the Blue Ridge (continued)
After an excellent brunch, groups left on their
chosen wine or distillery tours and the spirited
driving along the challenging Diamondback to
and from each destination. Although the fog
was still bad on our mountain, it dissipated as
we descended to the valley floor and we were
eventually enjoying the sun. Except for that fog,
all the weather ranged from cool to warm, but
never unpleasant. The skies were clear and bugfree, and the roads empty of traffic. We could ask
for no better weekend.
Bev and I went with longtime Boxster owner
Guenter Gamauf’’s group of seven cars, who
chose the South Creek Winery tour. The tour was
interesting and worth the drive.
Evening brought a great seafood buffet. We
were seated at the Team Marotta table, which
was the name of our group for the next day’s
Fun Rally. We usually made a point of sitting with
different people at each meal so we could meet
as many fellow BRBSers as possible. In addition
to the long-time attendees, we met several who
were also new to the event.
The next morning several Tech Sessions were
held. At the only one I had time for, attendees
were fascinated by Geunter’s lecture on early
Porsche history.
Now it was time for Team Marotta to gather for
a group photo, one from a long list needed to
win the Rally. For the next six hours we traveled
the area’s winding roads and long straightaways,
stopping at locations for photos and some light
shopping. Our packed lunch was eaten in Yancy
County’s Burnsville town square, while I arranged
for photo help at the local county jail and fire department. Jail personnel let all twenty-three of
us cram ourselves into their “drunk tank”, and the
on-duty corrections officer posed for pictures
with us. At the fire department, the firemen
brought out one of their trucks, then erected a
portable water container, aka a bathtub, so we
could jump in it and satisfy our water photo
requirement. In appreciation of the fire department’s cooperation, we ‘passed the hat’ and
they received a sizable donation. Volunteer fire
department’s like Burnsville’s tend to be poorly
funded, so the donation was welcome and will
be put to good use purchasing badly needed
equipment.
After returning to the Inn, we had time to ourselves before the banquet, so Bev and I shopped
at the Inn’s stores. I also took the time to wash
the Blue Box at the Inn’s wash rack. Three days of
driving and some rain had made it filthy.
Our evening barbecue/banquet was held behind
the Inn overlooking the valley. It was cool (cold
10
for Floridians) and windy, so after dinner the
door prizes were handed out in the lobby, which
is also were the Summit’s last group meeting for
the year was held. There we learned that the Inn
had already been booked for the 2013 event.
After the meeting broke-up, most people either
went into the bar, or stayed in the lobby to watch
a slide show of the pictures taken that week. Bev
and I retired to our room fairly early, where we
heard a group of cars heading out for a night run.
When we got up next morning before the sun
came up, we saw that the parking lot was already
missing at least nine cars. Apparently some attendees had a long drive home and wanted to
get an early start.
One of many interesting aspects of the BRBS is
that once you attend with your Boxster, you are
welcome to return in later years driving whatever car you choose. Non-Boxster attendees included two Caymans, twelve of the 911 family, a
BMW 335i.
On Sunday we got up fairly early and, after breakfast, loaded the car for our return trip. Checkout
was effortless and we both enjoyed the event so
much, we have a room reserved for next year’s
Summit. Bev and I plan to come down Tuesday
with the convoy heading south from Canada so
we can take full advantage of pre-BRBS events.
Since this was our first trip to the area, we decided to do some sightseeing on the way home.
Instead of taking 19E back to I-81, we went the
other direction on NC226A to I-40, then to I-77
with the intention of stopping in Mt. Airy, aka
Mayberry. For those not familiar with this town,
it is the birthplace of Andy Griffith, and the town
has tried to capitalize on it. As we both grew-up
watching Andy, Barney, Aunt Bee, and the rest
of the Andy Griffith Show cast, it was a ‘must’ for
us to take the slight detour needed to visit the
town. The weather was gorgeous for the return
trip and the Blue Box went topless.
On the way north along I-77 we passed a large
convoy of southbound Porsches, so I flashed my
headlights and waved as they passed, while several with their tops down returned the wave.
We got home just before dark and our four-day
trip totaled 1242-miles of driving with an average MPG of twenty-five. Bev and I had a great
time and look forward to next year’s BRBS.
For information about attending the 2013 BRBS,
held from May 29-June 2, 2013, go to www.Pedrosboard.com and http://www.brbs.org/ and
we’ll see you there!

POrsches move to Granville for P2O
by Keith Inniss
The highlight of my summer, as my
wife says, started at 11:00 a.m. on
August 3rd, when I met my road
trip partner, Les Checel, in Medina.
We were traveling to Granville, OH
with four other Porsches, all making the annual pilgrimage known as
Porsches to Ohio, P2O.
Our trip took us through the winding
roads of Galena to the Ron Thomas
Porsche/Volkswagen Museum where
we saw a sampling of his extensive
Porsche collection, approaching approximately 50 cars. At the museum,
we saw pristine VWs, a Toyota Celica
from the late 70s and approximately
16 of the finest Porsches East of the
Mississippi. Also housed at the museum was our host’s newest acquisition, a Porsche parts and accessory
business known as AASE Sales (no
competition for Stoddard). A few
small purchases were made, but do
not mention it to my wife.
It was approaching lunchtime, so a
group of us gathered at the local diner where the food was pretty good
and we were able to talk about, what
else? Porsches!
Jim & Diane Forcina are part of the 2nd group leaving Medina for Granville.
As the trip continued, it took us
through the cornfield-lined curving
roads into the quaint town of Granville. The first settlers were from New
16
England and it was evident in the
look and feel of this charming town.
Just outside of town is the Buxton
Inn where my travel partner Les
and I were staying along with other
NOR members who made a separate
journey later in the day. It appeared
to be a series of bed and breakfasts
joined at the hips and surrounding a very charming courtyard. Of
course by this time, our only interest
was finding a place to wash our cars
in preparation for the next day’s big

event. After only a short 2 ½ hour
trip, it did not take long for our cars
to become street concours ready.
With this chore behind us, it was
time to attend the meet and greet
in the central courtyard where there
were hors d’oeuvres and adult beverages awaiting us. After much socializing and visiting the lodgings of
other NOR members, it was time to
retire to what we now know as the
“haunted house”. As legend tells it,
the Buxton was built in 1812 and has
been one of the oldest continuallyoperated inns in Ohio serving guests,
living and dead, since then. There is a
ghost of a woman wearing blue and
perfumed in gardenias and Major
Buxton, for whom the inn is named,
Despite all the sightings and noises,
no guests had to flee the premises.

As the registration continued, the
cars just kept coming, one pristine
Porsche car after another. By midmorning there were over 400 hun-
The Buxton Inn has had famous
guests such as Presidents Lincoln
and McKinley, Harriet Beecher Stowe,
Henry Ford, Keith Inniss and Les Checel. Our random room assignment
was Room 7, which we were later
told was the room haunted by the
lady in blue. My response to that
was, “if I am smiling in the morning,
you will know that the haunted lady
visited me”. After an evening on the
town, Les returned to our room to
retire for the evening only to find
the lights flickering in the bathroom.
After some investigating, he found
only a loose bulb. Then suddenly

was found to be due to a loose screw,

dred Porsches from at least 11 states
and Canada parked in this little town
lined with shops, restaurants and
outdoor vendors. The weather was
ideal and the door prizes kept coming throughout the day, but the climax of the event was the $12,000
raised for cancer and other charities.
The streets fill quickly with early registrants
Part of the excitement of P2O is acquiring what would be primo parking. This requires early morning arrival. Registration typically starts at
7:00 a.m., but the cars start lining up
around 5:30 a.m. For those of you familiar with Oxford, I was usually first

Vision:
To bring together a diverse mix of automobile

Teens Train for Defensive Driving
by Lori Bryant
There is a hero among us--he doesn't
wear a cape but he is a hero nonetheless. He is someone who saw a problem and realized he could make a difference. Someone who knew the most
likely way for teenagers to be injured
or die was in a car, making driving errors due to lack of experience and safe
driving techniques.
The Mid-Ohio School provides driving
instructors who guide the teen drivers
through a series of exercises including
emergency lane change, wet braking
exercises and skid car driving. There
was also a classroom session with MidOhio instructor Jim Bishop that put
attention on accident avoidance and
distracted driving.
NOR member Dan Davis is that hero.
Dan realized a few years ago there was
a huge need for teen drivers to learn
additional safe driving techniques beyond what they were learning in traditional driver's education classes so he
thought of a solution. Together with
his employer, Key Bank, and the MidOhio School, he created a program
called "Key to Safe Teen Driving".
This program, started in 2009 with one
event that year, has grown to events
this summer in 5 states and runs all
summer long.
A special feature of the session we attended at Dublin High School was special guest instructor and Indy car driver
Simon Pagenaud. Simon wants to
help teens be more effective and safer
drivers and he was happy to spend a
morning working with the kids to perfect their skills. He shared with me that
he also works with kids in his native
France in a similar program.
Other special guests that day were two
Ohio State Troopers who shared their
vision of accident avoidance and safer
driving.
Simon Pagenaud (center in black), IndyCar driver and
guest instructor for the “Key To Safe Teen Driving”
program with teen drivers
My teenaged drivers, 16 and 19 years
old, had the great fortune in July to be
able to experience this program first
hand. It runs as a compressed 2-1/2
hour session of the normally day long
excellent program run by the Mid-Ohio
School at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car
Course in Lexington, OH. The course is
sponsored by Key Bank, The Mid-Ohio
School, Kumho Tire and Discount Tire
and is free to teen drivers.
September 2012
NOR member & founder of “Key to Safe Teen Driving”, Dan Davis welcomes students to his free school. .
Our community should be very proud
of the efforts of Dan Davis, Key Bank,
the Mid-Ohio School, Kumho Tire, Tire
Discounters and the Ohio State Highway Patrol to help teens become safer
drivers. Look for more classes in 2013.

I have just come home from attending my first ‘inter-club’ event
and what a way to get indoctrinated!! P2O, Porsches to Ohio, held
in Granville, OH for the first time, is
run by our neighbors to the south,
the Mid Ohio Region (MOR) and do
they ever throw a great party. The
July 27-28 event welcomed over 400
Porsches and close to 1000 people.
The town of Granville opened it’s
arms to all by accommodating this
wonderful, casual, Porsche party
now in it’s 11th year. Read more
about this on pages 18-21. I guarantee you will want to attend the 2013
party now that it is so close to home.
Thanks to the members of MOR and
the volunteers from NOR for all their
hard work. It was a terrific event and
a fun caravan on our drive to P2O!
As we have done for the past 4 years
(with the exception of our Clinic year
in 2010), my husband, Bob Palmer,
and I have written yet another Fun
Rallye for the members of our favorite car club. Saturday, August 18th
showed how much these are appreciated with an attendance of 22 cars
and 41 members driving the roads
and answering the questions for
this Eastern Rallye Run. Even with
a glitch in the directions, we all had
a blast and only due to publishing
stories of the large amount of activities in which NOR members participate keeps me from including the

At the Buxton Inn in Granville, OH
results in this month’s issue. Look
for photos and the winner’s article
in the October Voices.
Another super activity we attended
was the Rib Burn-off at Mike Garriga’s home on August 25th. Over 100
members attended and the air was
filled with the smells and sounds of
NOR members enjoying the summer. This too will be covered in next
month’s Voices from the Trunk..
One should never consider having
too much to write about to be a
problem. This will hold true as NOR
members attend our 9/9 German
Auto Fest, 9/15 Winetasting & BBQ,
9/23 Final Autocross of the season
and 9/28-30 Final Driver’s Ed of the
season. Don’t let the ‘finals’ fool you,
however, as there are multiple tech
sessions and socials to attend all
through the non-driving months!
Be there!!
