New financial assistance for Iowa families
New help is available to Iowa families who are struggling to pay the rent and who may be facing eviction. As
part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the state of Iowa received approximately $11 million
for the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program. The Iowa Finance Authority (IFA), administers the program in Iowa.
Iowa Rental Help offers a variety of financial assistance tools to qualified renters including assistance with
rent and utility payments for up to a total of eighteen months, (including up to six months in arrears), moving
expenses, security deposits, rental deposits and more.
Inside Story Headline
Qualified homeowners who are moving into rental units can also access the funds to assist them with eligible
costs, as can homeless individuals and families who seek permanent rental housing.
When individuals contact Iowa Rental Help they will be connected with a case manager in their area to schedule a consultation to determine whether they qualify and determine the assistance that will best benefit them.
The case manager will then meet with them every six months to reassess the situation. After a maximum of 18
months in the program, it is Iowa Rental Help’s goal that Iowa Rental Help recipients will have gained stability as well as adequate housing.
To learn more about the program, visit www.IowaRentalHelp.com or email us today. The local UDMO office
is offering assistance with this program and may call Melissa Vander Stouwe @ 712-260-0620 with any questions.

Customer Appreciation Day The Spencer Ambassadors
called on SMU Tuesday, October 6th for “SMU Cares” day at
the community-owned electric, water, and telecommunications
provider. SMU Cares is an employee-driven community giving
program established last year. For the 4th quarter of 2009, the
SMU Cares employee committee chose Upper Des Moines Opportunity as the beneficiary. So on Tuesday, SMU asked customers to bring non-perishable food items to SMU to benefit the
UDMO food pantry. SMU, in turn, is donating $1 to the agency’s
crisis fund for each item dropped off during this time.
Southpark Mall’s annual Halloween night Trick or Treat Parade brought out lots of spooky characters and fun costumes. Trick
or Treating can be done in a safe, warm, well lit environment. KICD & Lite 104.9 and SouthPark Mall present this opportunity
for the community to bring a non-perishable food item to be donated to UDMO. Fun—with a purpose.
