On the Australian coat of arms is a picture of an
emu and a kangaroo. These animals were chosen
because they share a characteristic that appealed to
the Aussie forefathers. Both the emu and the kangaroo can move only forward, not backward. The emu’s
three-toed foot causes it to fall if it tries to go backward, and the kangaroo is prevented from moving in
reverse by its large tail.
In Philippians 3:14, the Apostle Paul wrote of his
passion for going onward and upward in his life and
ministry, “I press toward the mark for the prize of the
high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” Those of us who
serve the Lord in ministry through our local churches
must become like the emu and the kangaroo, moving
only forward, never backward.
Too many times we become self-satisfied; but
that kind of thinking will cause us to become lukewarm spiritually and to become stagnant in our spiritual growth. A divine dissatisfaction is essential for
spiritual progress.
This year our theme is Higher Ground! It is our
aim to challenge every church worker to press onward and to forget the past (both failures and successes). Paul had things in his past that could have
been weights to hinder him from serving the Lord,
but, instead of slowing him down, they became inspirations to speed him ahead.
We must reach towards the future, keeping our
eyes on the finish line! Don’t be distracted by the
past or by the present.
There needs to be some goal setting and course
charting so that we might reach forth and seize the
opportunities that God has before us.
