strive to receive God’s gifts gratefully; nurture God’s gifts

Sunday Stewardship Sermon
Seventh Sunday of Easter
Before he ascended into heaven, Jesus instructed his
disciples to proclaim the Gospel to all of creation. As
stewards of this legacy, we too are called to give witness to
the Gospel of Jesus Christ in our words and actions; in
how we live and how we treat others. Are we sharing the
life of Christ with others in our day-to-day lives? In what
ways do we see ourselves proclaiming the Gospel? In
what ways can we do better?
Disease of Celiac Sprue
Those who have been diagnosed with Celiac Sprue have
the opportunity to receive a low gluten host at Holy
Communion. Please see one of the priests prior to Mass
to identify yourself and so directions can be given for you
to receive the Blessed Sacrament.
Adoption Connections
Adoption Connections is a support group for all members
of the adoption triad (birth parents, adoptive parents,
adoptees) including pre-adoptive parents who are
exploring the different pathways to adoption. Attendees
can learn more about the adoption process, international
vs. domestic and closed vs. open and semi-open
options. We also explore issues related to
raising children such as answering adoption related
questions in an age appropriate way. The group
facilitators are adoptive parents and St. Benedict
parishioners. The group meets on the 2nd Friday evening
of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Monte Cassino room of
the Father Anderson Library. For information contact
Tricia and Dan Zichello at 917/601-8866 or
[email protected].
First Friday Confession
Confession will be available on First Fridays immediately
following the Mass.
Cry Out to the Lord, All the Earth
As part of our effort to further our understanding and
improve our worship, we’re looking to get more people
singing at Mass and thought that many people might have
some songs they like (and will sing) at Mass. If you have
suggestions, reactions to the music (positive or negative)
send an email [email protected].
Appreciating Our Military
If anyone knows a member of the Military
who has recently returned from their tour
of duty and will be attending Mass here,
please see Father Dan or Father Kirk
before the Mass so he/she can be thanked
and recognized for their service to our
country from the altar.
Shut-Ins Anyone?
Inevitably there are parishioners in every parish who
cannot come to Mass because of ill health or lack of
transportation. If you know of someone like this, please
contact the Parish Office so the parishioner will have the
opportunity to pray with an extraordinary minister of the
Eucharist and receive Holy Communion regularly, and on
occasion, be visited by one of the priests.
Merciful Savior Prayer Group
The St. Benedict Merciful Savior Group will meet every
Monday, except when a holiday falls on a Monday, at
7:30 p.m. in the Chapel. For further information, please
call Sal and Janice Alagona at 732/ 264-5744 or
Geri Ventura at 732/566-6642.
Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting
There are three Alcoholics Anonymous meetings held at
St. Benedict each week. Meetings are Monday at
8:00 p.m., Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and Friday at 5:45 p.m.
Alcoholics Anonymous meetings will take place in the
Monte Cassino room of the Father Anderson Library.
Prayer Intention Group
The Prayer Intention Group meets on the second
Wednesday of each month after the 9:00 a.m. Mass in the
Chapel to pray for one another’s special intentions.
Updating Email
At all Masses the weekend of May
2ndand 3rd, parishioners were asked to
write their email address on their
envelopes as we would like to begin
communicating with parishioners via
email. To update your email address,
kindly write your new address on the same side of the
envelope where you indicate your gift amount. Thanks in
advance for your cooperation.

The Memorare
REMEMBER, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was
it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored
thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided.
Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of
virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand,
sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer
me. Amen.

Adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament
Jesus chose the desert as a place to
pray in solitude. He fought
temptation, the temptations of the
devil himself. He taught us how to
be victorious overt temptation. We
must desire victory over it. Call upon
the Lord to help you fight temptation,
any temptation, every temptation. Often we crowd out the
opportunity to be victorious for Christ. We allow “My
schedule”, “My time”, “My life” to come before the voice of
Christ which says, “Come to Me”. When we permit this,
temptation wins. Think about it! Try to pray as
St. Augustine prayed, “God, give me the grace to triumph
over my enemy, temptation.” Desire victory. Go for it!
“Vocations are born in prayer and from prayer; and only
through prayer can they persevere and bear fruit.”
Pope Francis

gave of their time and talent with faith and dedication and
our ministry is the success that it is because of their
commitment. Thank you to board members, ministry
members, Fr. Dan, Fr. Kirk and the parish for their
overwhelming support to our ministry. Don’t forget our
Project Weed be Gone service project that will last over
the summer and monthly events in July and August.

Thank You Adult Members
The Junior CYO is very sad to say goodbye to Mary

Ryan and Alyce Sutherland. All these volunteers
dedicated their time and efforts in providing a spiritual
atmosphere for our CYO. Mary Granito and Margaret

dedication.
High School CYO
There will be an end of year party for the High School
CYO on Thursday, May 21st from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Pizza
will be served. We will say goodbye to our dedicated
board members that helped us so diligently this year and
welcome new board members for another exciting year.
Please respond to the party either by email to
[email protected] or by using the sign up sheet

Communion Closet
We have approached the Diocese to partner with less
privileged parishes to provide a “communion closet”; gently
-used communion dresses, veils, suits, ties, and shoes for
children whose parents lack the means to incur this
expense. We realize that many of you may want to keep
the dress/suit as a memento of that day or hand it down to
others but if this is not the case, we ask you to bring
whatever you can to the Gathering Space before Mass on
any of the following weekends: May 16th, 17th, and May
23rd and 24th. There will be a labeled bin in the Gathering
Space for your donation. Even suits worn for other special
occasions (Christmas, Easter, a family wedding, etc.) that
you think could be worn for a communion will be gratefully
accepted and cherished by the recipient. Please email us
(Louise and Dineen) at [email protected] and
[email protected]. On Sunday, May 3rd the HS CYO went to see the play
Aladdin. Over 20 members enjoyed a fantastic day
enjoying the play and sights of New York City. A
tremendous thank you to Marissa Delgado for facilitating
this great trip for our CYO members.

you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world,
bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel
to every corner of society.
We ask you to bless us
in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty.
Give us the strength of mind and heart
to readily defend our freedoms when they are
threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard
on behalf of the rights of your Church
and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith.
Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father,
a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters
gathered in your Church
in this decisive hour in the history of our nation,
So that, with every trial withstood
and every danger overcome—
for the sake of our children, our grandchildren,
and all who come after us—
this great land will always be “one nation, under God,
indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen

Respect Life News
Harrisonburg, Va, May 4, 2015
(LifeNews.com) - The Constitution was
designed to protect both religious rights
and free speech, but city officials in a
town in Virginia papered to abrogate
both when they filed criminal charges
against a church that dared post a
pro-life sign on its own properly. Valley
Church of Christ is located at the corner
of Virginia Avenue and Acorn Drive in the City of
Harrisonburg. To show its strong religious beliefs in the
sanctity of human life, the church put up two signs on a
chain link fence running along the Acorn Drive side of the
property. One sign shows an unborn baby cradled in a pair
of hands with a quote from Mother Teresa: “It is a poverty
to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you
wish.” The other sign quotes Jeremiah 1:5, “Before I formed
you in the Womb I Knew You,” with a picture of the face of
a baby. Zoning officials with the city of Harrisonburg,
Virginia threatened criminal charges at a local church over
its display of pro-life messages on private property. On
April 20, 2015, the church received a letter from the City’s
zoning inspector advising the church that a complaint had
been received about the signs and that the church was in
violation of a section of the City’s sign ordinance which
prohibits banners, pennants and flags. However, the
section cited by the City contains several exemptions from
the prohibition, allowing national flags, flags of political
subdivisions, corporate/business flags, flags of civic and
charitable organization, and banners pertaining to holidays
or civic events. The City’s letter ordered that the church
correct the “violation” within 10 days or it could be charged
with a Class 1 misdemeanor, which carries a penalty of up
to 12 months in jail and a fine of up to $2,500.
Thankfully, attorneys intervened on behalf of the church
and the city backed down.
