October, 2015 - Stephen T. Badin High School
October 2015
Dear Parents and Students,
What a great time to be Catholic and attend a Catholic High School. Hopefully you had the
opportunity to watch the coverage of the Pope’s historic visit to the United States. Throughout
his six days here in the United States, the Pope gave us numerous examples of how to live our lives in the
image of Jesus. The talks he gave to various groups, the Masses he celebrated with thousands, and his
outpouring of love for the less fortunate provided us with lessons on how to live a life dedicated to God. More
importantly, his openness to people of all walks of life was inspiring. Pope Francis truly is a role model for all of
us regardless of our religious background.
Our mission at Badin High School is to inspire young men and women to achieve their personal best, live their
faith and lead the future. In the month of September, we saw first-hand how our students, faculty and alumni
bring our mission alive. Our students had the opportunity to meet and hear from several alumni at three
different events. Eric Broyles, a 1987 graduate, addressed the students regarding how to achieve their personal
best. Mr. Broyles is a successful lawyer and entrepreneur. His message of having a vision for your life, having
a plan, building a team to support you, and executing that plan allowed our students to see what they can
achieve.
We celebrated Mass with 40 of our alumni from Hamilton Catholic and Notre Dame Academy which provided our
students the opportunity to meet those who helped lay the foundation for Badin High School. Brother Don Neff,
the last principal of Hamilton Catholic, spoke to the students about spreading goodness throughout the world.
He challenged the students to make a positive difference in this world.
Finally, we inducted six alumni into our Hall of Honor. Several of the inductees joined us for an all-school
assembly. The inductees are great role models for our students and truly have achieved their personal best,
lived their faith and are leaders in the community.
We are excited to announce that we have seven seniors who have been recognized by the National Merit
Scholarship Program for their outstanding academic success and high standardized test scores. We have 3
Semi-Finalist: Kelsey Hillard, Garrett Ernst and Conner Bryson. These three are in the running to become
Finalist. We also have four Commended students: Sofia Milillo, Jakob Bryson, Kyle McGill and Nathan Maue.
We are extremely proud of these students and their dedication to academics. In addition, we had 22 students
recognized as AP Scholars. This is a terrific honor and recognizes the students’ academic accomplishments and
their outstanding parents and teachers. Congratulations to all of these students on a job well done.
October will be another busy month at Badin High School. We will hold our freshman student council officer
and representative elections, there are numerous colleges that will be here to meet with our seniors, and the
counselors will host “Coffee with the Counselors” for our parents. We will celebrate Mass as a community on
October 21st and our third group of seniors will attend their Kairos retreat. Our freshmen, sophomores and
juniors will be taking the PSAT on October 14th. The 1st quarter ends on October 16th. It is important that your
student(s) continue to work hard the entire quarter. Please be sure to be in contact with the teachers if you
have any questions or concerns about your student’s progress in a course. A parent should expect to hear from
a teacher as soon as a student’s grade becomes a D or an F. If this is not happening, please contact me and
we will set up a meeting with the teacher to discuss the student’s grade.
Please be sure to log into Naviance and see if your student is taken advantage of this free program. Students
are able to do free ACT and PSAT prep, research colleges, and start building their student resume. If you have
not done so already, I encourage you to check the site and have your student utilize this resource.
Open House is on Sunday, November, 1st from 1 – 4 pm. We always look forward to this opportunity to
showcase our school and the wonderful programs, faculty, staff and students we have at Badin. We have yard
signs available if you are interested in placing one in your yard. We appreciate your support and willingness to
spread the word about Badin High School.
As always, if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions, please feel free to stop by and talk, or call me at
school.
God Bless you and your family,
Brian D. Pendergest

Ambassador Program
During September, we held sign-ups and interviews for freshmen and new students who want to participate in
the Badin Ambassador Program. We appreciate them giving up their time to interview for such a rewarding and
important position at Badin. Many of these students have proven that they want to represent Badin “with their
best foot forward” as Mr. Allen says. Their actions and words in school and outside the building make a huge
impact on how others view Badin… we’re glad they have stepped up to the challenge!
The new list of Badin Ambassadors will be posted by October 1 on the Advancement Bulletin Board.
Freshman Ambassadors have their first meeting after school on Wednesday, October 7 @ 2:40 PM in the
Cafeteria for approx. an hour. We ask all new Ambassadors to attend and bring a pen!
All ambassadors are expected to help at the Open House on Sunday, November 1, 1-4:00 PM
and to attend one training meeting.
The Open House training meetings are on the following dates in the Little Theatre during the FLEX period
(during school hours):
Wednesday, October 7— FLEX period (10:30-11:10 AM) —all underclassmen
Thursday, October 29—FLEX period—all seniors & those that missed first meeting
 Student athletes may also work at their sport table, but only two students are allowed at each table at a time.
We have a great need for student ambassadors – so please share your time with us.
 We WILL issue service hours for those who assist with this event (which will be signed the week AFTER
Open House).
 If an ambassador cannot help, he or she is required to speak to Mr. Allen or Mrs. Gray in the Advancement
Office prior to Open House.

look at Badin. We particularly encourage 8th grade families to contact the Admissions Office to set up a Shadow
Day. A Shadow experience with BHS students is a terrific way for a student to get a 1-on-1 view of Badin. The
Admissions Office also arranges tours for families who would like to come in and look around.
If you have an 8th grade student who is interested in Badin, or know of a family with an 8th grader who would
benefit from the Badin experience, contact Dirk Q. Allen, director of admissions and media relations, at (513) 8633993, ext. 120; or by e-mail at [email protected]

Annual Fund
The Annual Fund helps bridge the funding gap that exists between the amount of tuition we receive and the actual cost of
educating a student here at Badin. Without the Annual Fund, tuition would increase well beyond what most families can
afford. Badin provides the best value for the amount of tuition charged in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and yet it still
doesn’t cover the full cost of educating each student. By supporting the Badin Annual Fund, you help us continue the tradition of profoundly shaping the way students Think, Achieve, Serve and Lead. This is why Badin depends on the Annual
Fund each year. The most significant way any of us can donate to Badin is through the Annual Fund.
Our Board of Trustees and administration work tirelessly to keep our tuition increases to a minimum. Even though Badin
provides the best value in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, the amount we charge in tuition still doesn’t cover the actual cost of
educating students. In fact, this year the gap between actual cost and tuition charged is $442,000 or $815 per student.
That is why each year our Advancement office seeks support for the Annual Fund...to bridge the tuition gap and make a Badin education as affordable as possible.
At Badin High School, we do everything in our power to provide each student with the best educational, spiritual, extracurricular, and athletic opportunities available. Without philanthropic support, however, that would not be possible.
In order to address that challenge, every year we ask parents, alumni and friends to support the Annual Fund to help cover
the tuition gap for your student. Gifts of all amounts pull together to fund the gap. Would you consider a gift of
$50 or more to fund the gap of $815 for your student?
Online donations can be made by clicking on this link:
https://www.supportingbadin.org/sslpage.aspx?pid=298

YES!
I’d like to help bridge the gap and donate to the 2015-16 Badin Annual Fund
Please return to Badin with
your donation.

Has your student athlete signed up with FinalForms as required?
We are very excited that the Badin Athletic Department has partnered with FinalForms, an on-line program
which will enable you and your student to complete & file MOST athlete forms electronically. FinalForms is
immediately available for all Ram athletes. The ONLY form that you are still required to actually print, complete,
and file in the Athletic Department, is the actual OHSAA Physical form. The physical form must be completed by
the doctor and by law we are required to have a signed copy on file. Once your student’s physical is received by
the athletic department we will input the expiration date into FinalForms and then you
will receive automatic notifications when your student’s forms need to be updated. Click on the Parent
Registration guide to get started in FinalForms. This link is also available on the Badin athletic web pages.
We are asking that ALL student-athletes (grades 9-12) use FinalForms. Even if your student’s
current physical paperwork does not expire until after the new school year begins, please register
@https://badin-oh.finalforms.com now and electronically complete all the forms!

Badin High School began its 50th year of quality co-ed Catholic
education on Aug. 19 as 146 freshmen from 22 schools
entered in the Class of 2019. Total enrollment is 540 students,

10 more than last year, as enrollment increased for a fifth consecutive year. The Class of 2016 represents the 50th graduating class, and Badin will honor our two predecessor
schools, Hamilton Catholic (all boys) and Notre Dame High (all
girls) throughout the year as we recognize the tremendous legacy they left following their closing a half-century ago.


Brother Don Neff was the featured speaker as Badin recognized Hamilton Catholic and Notre Dame grads with a Heritage
Mass on Wednesday, Sept. 16. Brother Don was the last
principal at Hamilton Catholic, from 1961-66, and came from
Florida to be a part of the event. Badin chaplain Father Ed Pratt
was the celebrant, and some 50 grads attended the all-school
Mass and subsequent reception in the Pfirman Center.
Congratulations to three Badin seniors who have been named
National Merit Scholarship semifinalists in the prestigious annual National Merit Scholarship testing program. Conner Bryson
(St. John Dry Ridge), Garrett Ernst (Our Lady of Sorrows) and
Kelsey Hillard (Sacred Heart) are among the less than 1
percent of U.S. high school students who have the opportunity

Do you have a nomination for the Athletic Hall of Fame? Send
your nominations to Badin High School. A nomination form is
available on the Badin web site, BadinHS.org Your recommendations are critical to the selection process! The Hall of Fame
Class of 2016 will be announced in January, with the annual
Hall of Fame dinner scheduled for Saturday, May 14, 2016, in
the Pfirman Family Activity Center. See you there!
to earn some of the $32 million in college scholarship dollars
that will be awarded in the spring of 2016.
Badin was proud to recognize five Homecoming king and queen
candidates at its annual Homecoming football game Friday
night, Sept. 25. King candidates included Nathan Corbissero
(Sacred Heart), Garrett Ernst (Our Lady of Sorrows), Toby Liu
(China), T.J. O’Neil (Sacred Heart) and Jack VanSteenKiste (St.
Maximilian Kolbe). Queen candidates included Hannah Broermann (St. Aloysius), Morgan Deitschel (Sacred Heart), Brianna Dunavent (St. Ann), Wendy Huang (China) and Sofie
Milillo (St. Julie Billiart). The winners were crowned at
halftime of the football game.
Badin students were all over the country this summer. Junior
Maggie Hayes (St. Ann) was at SpaceTrek on the campus of
Morehead State (Ky.) University, pursuing her interest in space
science engineering; junior Alexandra Hensley (St. Peter in
Chains) was in California at the Montezuma Leadership Summit
sponsored by the debate organization Junior State of America;
and sophomore Andrew Noelker (St. Peter in Chains) will travel
to Orlando, Fla., in October as one of 50 students at a leadership forum through his efforts with The First Tee golf program.
Congratulations to all!
