Another opportunity that is set to be expanded is
the export of ‘hatchery reared’ giant clams to the
aquarium trade.

Government Resources & Research
Development programs.
AMRC facility located on Aitutaki responsible
for,
Rearing and maintaining various stocks reared
giant clams,
derasa & maxima been trialed by MMR since 2003
for aquarium export.
Funds thru the MMR operating budget, under
Inshore & Fisheries Budget.

Current Constraint
Industry Support has been selfsustained for 20 years.
Lack of divers
Issue with the current OIE/Cities
imposition restriction barriers – Clam
export is on halt.
Marketing issues – exchange rates
Future Aspirations
To promote hatchery reared clam for the
Ornamental trade for the local farmers.
Aquarium Fishery, so far well-managed
fishery, just need more divers.
To further foster on any initiatives that my
suit our situation in the Cook islands and that
may be proven to be both economically &
ecological sustainable.
