In addition, we will be saying the Psalm at least throughout the summer. The first Sunday, we tried
saying the Psalm and singing the refrain, and it didn’t sound good from where Ronna Jean and I
were standing, so we decided to drop the refrain.
A number of people commented on the use of the water bucket and sprinkler with the
Thanksgiving for Baptism. I talked about it with several of you about the changes I’d made and how
I did it. Some flat out rebelled. Others liked the changes even though they did not understand
why. Yet, most simply accepted. I can understand all of the responses.

The Mutual Ministry committee met last month and we decided to begin including a calendar in the
lamplighter with committee meeting times and dates and my office hours for the month. Janice is
in the office from 8:30 A.M to 3:30 P.M Tuesday through Friday. However, because of my many
responsibilities, I cannot be. I know, “You pastors only work one day a week, anyway!” “Yup!”
Consider hanging the calendar on your fridge next to your son’s or daughter’s school calendar.
We will include worship times and other activities as well. This is going to be a work in progress
and may take several months to get the kinks worked out of it. So, please bear with us, and feel
free to offer suggestions to improve it.

Weekly Attendance
Mutual Ministry discussed the drop in Salem’s attendance that has been a concern to many. Julie’s research shows that
attendance has dropped in all denominations. The graph below shows a trend analysis of Salem’s weekly attendance
since 2006. The analysis shows that attendance dropped in 2008, and that we have been at approximately the same level ever since. Each year, attendance trends up and down during the seasons, historically being the lowest during summer. We peak at Christmas and Easter, then drop off after each of those holidays. Data does not support the claim that
Pastor’s changes have caused attendance to fall. However, the data does show that he brought attendance back up to
the six-year median during his first few months. The drop we have experienced after Easter this year follows the same
trend as every year.

number is 412-330-8053. Anytime!
I’ve been asked to talk about proper worship etiquette: We’ve moved the announcements from following the prelude
to following the Post-Communion Prayer. We did this because it seemed more logical to have the announcements as we are
preparing to leave rather than as we are preparing to worship. With that being said, the Prelude is a time for worship
preparation. Please end all conversations when the Prelude begins in whatever form it begins. It is disheartening to those
trying to focus or to those who are presenting the Prelude to try to sing or play above the noise. And noise does carry
quite well in our Nave. Each of us needs to bear this in mind. I thank you now for your help in worship preparation.
Finally, we’re including in this Lamplighter a summary of the survey responses we’ve received thus far. We are also
including, at the request of the writer, a letter regarding the issues leading up to the survey. (see Page 13).
Of 150 surveys mailed out, 68 have been returned. If you have not yet returned your survey, I’m interested in your
response. All responses are important! None are discounted! If it has just been sitting on your desk, please take as much
time as you wish to put down your thoughts and return it. If you are more like me and have lost it in the pile, please call
Janice and she will get another one to you (I hope.)
If you would like your comments published, please submit them to the office. Only letters with names will be
published.
Our Lord commanded us to love one another. May the Holy Spirit guide us and enable us to live in obedience to Christ’s
commandment.

TO EXERCISE OR NOT– WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
By Dr. Sharon Gwinn, PhD; OTR/L; Sandra Sterlitz, MPT— Rehabilitation Innovations, Inc
We know the last thing you probably want to read
about today is exercise! There really isn’t a way to escape exercise discussions on the news, in magazines,
and now at church. However, we would like you to consider reasons why exercise is so important to humans.
First of all, humans were meant to move: chase their
food, gather their food and be really active all day long.
Thankfully, I don’t have to know how to use a spear to
eat, but now, as a trade off; I need to know how to exercise to say healthy.
help to wake up your brain.
2. Keeps all of your internal organs functioning appropriately. Many of the digestive organs rely on gravity to help
move food through your system.
3. Helps calm your brain and nervous system so you can
sleep better.
4. Lubricates your joints so that arthritis doesn’t hurt so
much.
Here are 5 things that exercise does for you:
1. Keeps you more alert. Exercise causese your body
to secrete endorphins. These circulating endorphins
5. Keeps your bones strong. You need to bear weight on
all of your bones to keep calcium being deposited into the
bones.

We have some new and exciting plans for 2012, and we really need more women to help us to go forward.
You will notice we have some new members on our board and could use your talents, as well, to carry on
our mission of service to those less fortunate. There is a place in our organization for all of the ladies of
our church. Now is the time to be bold and step out in faith.

There will be no board meeting in July.

No Circle Meeting in July or August. We will resume meeting on September 5, 2012.
July 24, 2012 - Ladies Work Day begins at 10:00 am. We will be making favors for the Ark, in Delmont. We
also make favors for Meals on Wheels, as well. We bring a covered dish for our lunch, and
enjoy the social time we spend together.

PARISH HEALTH NEWS
These reasons should be enough to get most of
us off the couch. But, you probably think that you need to
become an athlete in training to improve your health. The
great news is that you don’t. The newest research has
demonstrated that as little as 30 minutes of exercise per
day has significant health benefits. Indeed, you don’t
even need to do 30 minutes straight through ! Three sessions of 10 minutes each can significantly improve your
abilities. These three sessions can be strength training,
movement activities, or stretching activities. Also, strenuous home activities such as gardening or mopping the
floor count towards your exercise goals. The point is,
everyone needs to exercise, regardless of age, level of
ability, weight, medical conditions, or ability to understand
directions. Also, exercise does not require you to buy
expensive equipment: lifting cans of food, your children,
groceries, or garbage repetitively counts as weight lifting;
dancing and singing, taking a walk, walking up and down
the stairs counts as movement activities; and yawning
and taking a good stretch, in whatever manner feels good
to you, counts as stretching activities. Exercise, if done
correctly, should:
1. Actually make you feel better ! While you’re doing it,
immediately after you are done and in the long term.
2. NOT hurt. If you do hurt, you need to stop and get
advice on how to exercise so it doesn't hurt.
3. Help you to sleep better, move better, hurt less, and
manage your medical conditions more easily.

Notes on the Liturgy
Sunday, July 1, 2012
Fifth Sunday after Pentecost
A woman finds healing by touching Jesus' cloak, and a girl is
restored to life when he takes her by the hand. In both cases
a boundary is crossed: in Jesus' time the hemorrhaging
woman was considered ritually unclean, polluting others by her
touch, and anyone who touched a corpse also became unclean.
In Mark's gospel Jesus breaks down barriers, from his first
meal at a tax collector's house to his last breath on the
cross as the temple curtain is torn in two. We dare to touch
Jesus in our "uncleanness" and to live as a community that
defines
no
one
as
an
outsider.
Sunday, July 8, 2012
Sixth Sunday after Pentecost
Jesus does great deeds of power and gives his disciples
authority over demons. Yet none of this power is unilateral; it
all must be received by faith. Jesus asks his disciples to go
out without money or supplies, so that they will be dependent
on how others receive them. When we are sent from the
assembly to witness and to heal, we are asked to be
vulnerable, to be dependent on the reception of others. The
Spirit always operates in the between: between Jesus and his
Abba, between Jesus and us, between you and me, between us
and those to whom we are sent.
Sunday, July 15, 2012
Seventh Sunday after Pentecost
When Amos told what he saw when God held up the plumb line
of justice next to Israel—that the poor were being
trampled—he was a threat to the power of priests and king.
John the Baptist also spoke truth to power, and Herod had
him beheaded. In Herod's fear that Jesus is John returned
from the dead, we may hear hope for the oppressed: that all
the prophets killed through the ages are alive in Jesus. We are
called to witness to justice in company with them.
Sunday, July 22, 2012
Eighth Sunday after Pentecost
Mark's gospel makes clear how great was the press of the
crowd, with its countless needs to be met, on Jesus and his
disciples. Yet in today's gospel Jesus advises his disciples to
get away and rest, to take care of themselves. Sometimes we
think that when others are in great need we shouldn't think of
ourselves at all; but Jesus also honors the caregivers' need.
We are sent from Christ's table to care for others and for
ourselves.
Sunday, July 29, 2012 Ninth Sunday after Pentecost Today
is the first of five Sundays with gospel readings from John 6,
the first four of which focus on Jesus as bread of life. Today
Jesus feeds thousands of people with five loaves and two fish.
What we have, what we bring to Jesus' table seems like it is
not nearly enough to meet all the needs we see around us.
But it is not the adequacy of our supplies or our skills that
finally makes the difference: it is the power of Jesus working in
the littlest and least to transform this world into the world
God desires, a world where all the hungry are satisfied.

When making your will, consider including Salem. You, thus continue to be a blessing long after you are gone, as
you help Salem to carry on it’s ministry for Christ. You can hasten the day when yet His will shall be done on earth
as it is in heaven. This is one of the finest inheritances one can leave, as it is a witness to what you felt to be
important, not only in this life, but the next. Your outright gift and unconditional bequest will be a real help in the
continuing of Salem’s mission and ministry. Talk this matter over with your attorney, so that you may include
Salem in your will.

“New” Medicare Card Scam
May 2012
Residents from all over Pennsylvania have received calls
from scammers claiming to be “from Medicare”. The scammer states that Medicare is sending out new cards and then
instructs the beneficiary to give the scammer their checking
account number in order to receive the new card. In at least
two cases, the scammer already had the beneficiary’s address, bank name, and bank routing number!
If you receive a call like this, hang up the phone!
REMEMBER:
Medicare will never call to sell you anything and will
NEVER ask for your checking account number.
To report a similar scam or other Medicare fraud, please call

Pastor Chuck
Welcome to the world of congregational politics and hypocrisy.
The congregation spent a year
searching for a replacement pastor, & they found a great one who won unanimous approval, only to
be nit-picked to death by a small but highly vocal minority of the congregation! Kind of reminds me
of Jesus; hailed as a hero on Palm Sunday, only to be crucified the following Friday! Shakespeare said
it all in his famous quote: “Much ado about nothing.”
You are not a carbon copy of any previous pastor, nor should you try to be! You have your own
agenda, methods, & talents. The congregation needs to respect that! Do me a favor: research the
donation records, & I can almost guarantee you that the biggest complainers are also the smallest
contributors, both in time and money. Remind me to tell you the donkey story. The next time you
deliver a children’s sermon, maybe you should turn and face the opposite direction! There are plenty
of biblical metaphors to support my thesis: “We see the speck in our brother’s eye, but we don’t see
the log in our own eye,” and “Let the evil of the day be sufficient unto itself.”
In conclusion, continue to perform in your exemplary fashion & don’t worry about being obsequious.
If Jesus couldn’t please everyone, you shouldn’t even bother to try. You have my permission to publish this letter, or excerpts from it in the Lamplighter (What can the church council do to me?). Just
don’t embarrass me by not correcting the spelling.
