Under Malaysia’s Economic Transformation Programme
(ETP), tourism was identified as one of the 12 National
Key Economic Areas (NKEA) to drive the nation’s economic
growth. Since then, a number of tourism development
projects have been put in place in order to achieve 36
million tourist arrivals and RM168 billion tourism receipts
by 2020.
To further capitalize on Malaysia’s consistent tourism
growth as well as the expected surge of tourists to the Asia
Pacific area over the next few years, Malaysia is embarking
on an intensive promotional campaign this year that will
culminate in the Visit Malaysia Year 2014 (VMY 2014)
when the nation welcomes 28 million tourists.
“We are on track towards meeting our long term targets
and we hope that the VMY 2014 and the promotional
campaign this year will significantly boost our tourism
performance,” continued Dato’ Sri Dr. Ng Yen Yen.

1VOLUNTOURISM
Galak Semangat Kesukarelawanan
1Malaysia Voluntourism - satu kosa kata yang agak baru
- adalah singkatan daripada Volunteer Tourism, yang

secara santai bagi tujuan memelihara serta menjaga
kebersihan dan kehijauan alam sekitar khususnya di
kawasan pelancongan atau percutian yang disertai
dengan penglibatan dalam aktiviti kesukarelawan.
1Malaysia Voluntourism merupakan satu usaha murni
pihak kerajaan untuk memupuk semangat kesukarelawan
dalam kalangan masyarakat serta para pelancong
untuk membangunkan sektor pelancongan dengan cara
menggerakkan Pasukan Sukarelawan Pelancongan untuk
membantu menggerakkan lima (5) program utama di
bawah Inisiatif 1Malaysia Voluntourism iaitu:
i.
1Malaysia Green 1Malaysia Clean
• Penyertaan sukarelawan dalam kempen
dan aktiviti kebersihan, kehijauan dan
mencantikkan
kawasan
atau
premis
pelancongan.
ii. 1Malaysia Voluntutoring
• Penyertaan sukarelawan untuk berkongsi
ilmu dan kemahiran dengan penggiat industri
seperti pengusaha Homestay serta masyarakat
luar bandar.
iii. 1Malaysia Volunsharing

negara.

pelaksanaan
acara-acara
Kementerian, berdasarkan lokasi tempat tinggal serta
kelapangan masa mereka pada masa tersebut. Program

MALAYSIA WINS MOST CHARMING
ASIAN ISLAND DESTINATION
AWARD
BEIJING, CHINA, 25 JANUARY 2013: Malaysia was
recognized as the most charming Asian island destination
by New Voyage Magazine at its annual awards ceremony
held at Sheraton Beijing Dongcheng Hotel on 15 January
2013.
The win is seen as a boost to Malaysia’s tourism plans for
2013 as it prepares to receive tourists this year, which has
been designated as a promotion year for the Visit Malaysia
Year campaign in 2014.
Malaysia’s many islands and beaches have long been a
favourite destination for many. Langkawi is known for its
natural attractions such as forests and 500 million-yearold rock formations which earned it the status of World
Geopark by UNESCO in 2007.
The east coast of Malaysia also boasts of jewels such as
Perhentian, Redang, Gemia and Sibu islands.
Equally captivating are the islands and beaches in Sabah
and Sarawak, with Sipadan Island leading the pack for
the world-class diving experience it offers. Mabul and
Mataking islands are also gaining popularity as diving
destinations in Sabah, while the five islands within
Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park offer visitors an island

Among the activities that are commonly packaged under
the Malaysia’s Homestay Programme are learning how
to dance, sing and cook traditional cuisines which are
unique to every state in Malaysia, rubber tapping, paddy
harvesting, fish farming and fishing at rivers or sea, palm
oil and cocoa harvesting and processing, visit to the rural
micro industrial projects and tree planting.
Malaysia’s Homestay Programme is an experience where
tourists stay with selected families, interact and experience
the daily life of these families whilst experiencing the
Malaysian culture.
Malaysia’s Homestay is not classified as an
accommodation facility. It was launched in 1995. It is
an initiative under the Malaysia’s Rural Tourism Master
Plan, aimed at increasing the participation of the rural
community in the tourism industry. This is also to reduce
rural-urban migration.
As at 31st December 2012, The Ministry of Tourism has
registered 159 homestays all over Malaysia, where it
comprises of 3,424 houses that offers 4,717 rooms.
The overall performance of the Homestay Programme in
2012 has shown significant improvements compared to
2011. A total homestay receipt for 2012 has increased by
17.9%, from RM15.7million in 2011 to RM18.5million
in 2012.
The total
increased
in 2012.
33.1% in
number of tourists visiting homestays has
by 27.6% from 254,981 in 2011 to 325,258
The occupancy rate has also increased from
2011 to 38.1% in 2012.
The homestay concept is focused on lifestyle and
experiential tourism. The uniqueness of lifestyle, cultural
activities and the rural economic activities are the main
attractions.
The income generated by the Homestay Programme
benefits not only the homestay operators but also spills
over to the whole community when they engage in cultural
activities, selling of souvenirs and participate in handling
tourist packages.
MALAYSIA MY SECOND HOME
PROGRAMME (MM2H)
Majority of applicants for the MM2H programme,
particularly those from developed countries, are retirees
who want to take advantage of the country’s combination
of good services and infrastructure and relatively low cost
of living.
The Malaysia My Second Home Programme is promoted
by the Government of Malaysia to allow foreigners who
fulfill certain criteria, to stay in Malaysia for as long as
they wish on a multiple-entry social visit pass.
Malaysia has plenty to offer foreigners in terms of an
affordable lifestyle, great weather, a friendly community,
world-class education and entertainment, unique culture,
nature and sports. Also, Malaysia has a good record of
maintaining law and order and is still rated as one of
the safest countries to live and work in this part of the
world. Malaysia also has a wide choice of state-of-the-art
private hospitals which offer world class treatment at a
substantially lower cost than many other countries.
Certainly Malaysia offers retirees a high standard of living
at a very reasonable price. Pensions which might only
cover basic living costs in fully developed countries allow
people to enjoy a much better lifestyle in Malaysia.
Although the MM2H visa is only for 10 years, the
Malaysian government has repeatedly stated that they
will renew the visas of all people who are approved for
the MM2H programme, as long as they comply with the
programme rules and the laws of Malaysia.
For more information, visit MM2H official website :
www.mm2h.gov.my.
Malaysia has experienced many years of economic and
political stability, and despite the current global economic
conditions, Malaysia is not expected to experience a
downturn. The government’s Economic Transformation
programme, which was launched in 2010, has already
kicked in and the country is enjoying good economic
growth.
