Maple in April Festival
April 27-29, 2012 - Along Rockwell Street, Hadley
and Main Street, Lake Luzerne, NY
The sweet scent of maple sap boiling delights the
senses and the thought of real maple syrup poured
over a stack of French toast and Oscar’s Smokehouse
sausage makes your mouth water for the Maple in
April Festival to begin.
There are plenty of family-friendly events
happening at the 8th annual Maple in April Festival
April 27- 29, 2012. The event kicks off on Friday
evening along Main Street, Lake Luzerne at the
Rockwell-Harmon House & Visitor Center with a
recipe cooking contest where all entries must contain
maple. Listen to storyteller Betty Cassidy tell
tales of maple sugaring and other farm stories, at
the H-L Public Library. Then join Chris Shaw for
an hour of folk music around the Adirondack Folk
School’s Amphitheater & fire pit where we can roast
marshmallows before heading home for the evening.
Saturday is packed with activities galore.
Breakfast is ready at 8a.m. Getting a whiff of maple
sausage cooking on the grill will lead you to the
Wilder’s Sugar Shack just over the railroad tracks on
Rockwell Street.
Wheels on the … car, truck, motorcycle, bicycle and
train go round and round on their way to the Smead
Memorial Park for the Lil’ Sugar Car, Truck & Cycle
Show and Flea Market & Swap Meet. The wheels of
the Saratoga & North Creek Railway will transport
bicycle and cyclist north to Thurman to pedal back to
Hadley. Those wishing to cross the trestle spanning
the Sacandaga River may ride south to Corinth. We
say “All aboard for train” enthusiasts - The Upstate
Model Railroaders club will set up their displays and
allow children (young & old) to work the G-scale model
trains. Also, Clarke Dunham, Tony award nominated
Broadway set designer, will show highlights from his
Railroad on Parade Museum in Pottersville.
There’s lots of maple goodies and just ‘sweet’ fun
for everyone – Crafters, food vendors, music, a pet
parade, activities for children, including inflatables
and big trucks will be along Rockwell Street.
Sunday afternoon activities include a
Walking Historic Stroll from the Fourcorners of Rockwell Street and Stony
Creek Road. A guide, in period costume
will narrate some historic and interesting
points while strolling along Rockwell
Street, Hadley to Lake Luzerne’s Main
Street Historic District. Those wishing
to tour the area on bicycle should bring
their bicycle and follow the self-tour map
outlining points of interest in Hadley and
Lake Luzerne. All activities this weekend
are family friendly.

TO ALL EATERS OF FOOD
It has been widely noticed by chain store
shoppers in the last year or so that food prices have
gone up continuously. There a number of reasons
for this including higher costs for diesel fuel, other
trucking expenses, weather related disruptions in
the production of our food, lengthy droughts in some
growing areas, floods financial issues, political issues
, and others. Gone are the days when every local
community was served by nearby farmers, orchards,
dairymen, and butchers. Our foods today typically
travel thousands of miles from producer to consumer.
But …. What if this “ just in time “ system breaks
down at some point?
Stores have a limited amount on hand. According to
some, about three days.
A positive development in recent years has been a
resurgence of small local farms which can be a secure
and dependable resource in any possible emergency.
Most of these farms receive no government aid and
therefore are subject to all the risks that agriculture
entails. In an effort to smooth out some of this,
several ideas have emerged. Consumers have been
invited to join the local farm and be a partner in the
process of food production.
In light of all of this, Hope Valley Farm is offering
our “ FARM SHARE PROGRAM ‘ this year. The farm

partner buys a book of checks that are discounted to
$180. Each check is worth $2.00 and can be spent at
any Hope Valley Farm Market for any product we sell

total value of the checks is $200.
The benefits are:
1. Obtaining our products at a discount
2. No lost product when you are away on Vacation
3. Get Certified Naturally Grown vegetables
4. Help sustain a local, dependable food source
5. Full access to our plant and flower line

NUTRITION & AGING
Good nutrition is vital to preventive health and
healthy aging! As we age, our nutritional requirements
change. We tend to need less caloric intake but
need more calcium, vitamin B12, and Vitamin D.
This change in nutritional needs can be a difficult
adjustment to make and it is important that you gain
advice from health care professionals. WebMD has
provided 10 Questions To Ask Your Doctor About
Nutrition And Healthy Aging.
1. How do I know if I’m getting all the nutrition I need?
Many Americans, especially older ones, aren’t
getting all the nutrition that they need for optimal
health. Even people who are overweight fall short
on the vitamins, minerals and nutrients they need.
Many of the calories that people consume have little
nutritional value. Talk to your doctor about the signs of
vitamin or mineral deficiencies.
2. Do any of the medications I use affect my appetite or
how food tastes?
A range of medications can interfere with good
nutrition. It is important to discuss what medications

you are taking with your doctor.
3. Do any of the medications I’m taking get in the way of
absorbing nutrients I need?
A variety of prescription drugs can interfere with
the body’s ability to absorb vitamins, minerals and other
nutrients.
4. I’m not very hungry when I know it’s time to eat. Is
that normal for someone my age?
There are many reasons why older individuals don’t
have a powerful appetite. These individuals are usually
less active and their bodies require fewer calories.
However, sudden loss of appetite can also be a sign of
depression or other serious health problems.
5. Should I consider taking a multivitamin?
Experts disagree on whether older Americans should
be routinely counseled to take a multivitamin. Many
agree that the best way to get your nutrients is from
food, not pills. Talk to your doctor before taking any
pills.
6. What about other single vitamins or mineral
supplements?
Some people may need to take an additional
supplement of certain nutrients. Such as people who
need a vitamin D or calcium supplement. Talk to your
doctor before taking any pills.
7. Should I cut back on salt in my diet?
If you have hypertension, and even if your blood
pressure is at the high end of normal, cutting back on
salt may be helpful. Recent evidence shows that the less
sodium you consume, the lower your risk.
8. How much alcohol is safe to drink?
Studies have shown that moderate amounts of
alcohol reduce the risk of heart disease. However,
most doctors are reluctant to encourage people to drink
because the risks for some can outweigh the benefits.
Talk to your doctor about a safe level for you that
maximize benefits and minimize risks.
9. Could I cut back on my medication by following a
healthier lifestyle?
Many older people can cut back on blood pressure,
cholesterol or other medication by eating a healthier diet
and getting more exercise. Talk to your doctor about
whether a healthier lifestyle could mean taking fewer
pills.
10. Should I make an appointment with a registered
dietician?
Doctors understand the importance of a healthy diet,
but may not have the time to provide complete dietary
counseling. If you have more questions than your doctor
has time to answer, ask for a referral to a registered
dietitian.

Ask The Real Estate

What is the difference between a co-borrower and
a co-signer on a loan?
Do they have the same rights and responsibilities?
If you’re applying for an FHA home loan, you
aren’t forced to apply and be responsible for the debt
all by yourself-FHA rules allow a co-borrower or cosigner to apply alongside the borrower.
Having a co-borrower or co-signer may improve
the FHA loan applicant’s chances of getting approved
for the mortgage. Using a co-borrower or co-signer is
also a way for a borrower with established credit to
help a less established co-borrower become a home

That isn’t the same as the FHA requirements

responsibility on the loan.

Co-borrowers or co-signers can’t have financial
interest in the property-meaning they can’t
own the property or borrow with the owner.
The same rule applies to the builder, real

could profit from the sale of the home.
That said, the FHA does provide an exception
to this rule, which states;
“Exceptions may be granted if the seller and

Sun Mountain Fiddler
Concert At Wells Library And It’s Free!
Dick Solberg, the renowned Sun Mountain Fiddler,
brings his foot-stompin’ brand of mountain music
to Wells, Sunday, April 22, at 2 p.m, at the Wells
Community Hall. The free, family-oriented program is
sponsored by the Virginia Hosley Free Library (a.k.a.
Wells Library). The hall is located on Main Street in
the heart of Wells.
Classically trained on piano and violin, Solberg
fell in love with country fiddling as a young man and
committed a long and colorful career to bringing oldtime, Celtic, bluegrass and Cajun music to audiences
around the globe. As a solo performer or with a
band, he has performed in such wideflung locales
as Scotland, China, the Caribbean and Egypt, as
well as on public radio and television. There will be
refreshments following the performance.
The concert is the library’s fourth event in its
“Weathering the Winter Woes” 2012 series. Partial
support is provided by a grant from NY State Council
on the Arts Decentralization Regrant program,
administered in Hamilton County by the Adirondack
Lakes Center for the Arts in Blue Mountain Lake.

Dick Solberg and the Sun
Mountain Band Coming to
Northville
Dick Solberg, the Sun Mountain
Fiddler, and his band will be
performing in the Northville Central
School Auditorium at 7 p.m. on
Saturday, May 12. Jointly sponsored
by the Sacandaga Task Force for
Senior Living and the Sacandaga
Valley Arts Network, the concert will
kick off a fund raising campaign to
support the development of a senior
housing project in Northville.
Dick Solberg was classically
trained on the piano and violin but
when he encountered “fiddling” in
styles like old-timey, bluegrass,
Celtic, and Cajun, he was hooked.
His professional career started
in 1976, when
he fiddled on
the streets in
places like Ann
Arbor, Michigan;
Provincetown,
Cape Cod; and
Coconut Grove,
Florida; it has
continued across
America, in the
Caribbean (25
winter seasons in
St. Thomas) and
at the Edinburgh
Festival in
Scotland; on
the Great Wall
of China; and
the American
University in
Cairo. When he
returns from his

Sacandaga Woodworkers
by Gary Spencer
Our March meeting was a presentation and
critique to the Chapter from the group of members
who are constructing the items that were to be raffled
off at Showcase. There were two items one a Cherry
mirror with two drawers and a second a commorative
flag box also made of Cherry.
Actually the team making these projects was very
busy since we made several duplicates of these pieces
for other local charities to use as fund raisers. In
addition every member made a piece for themselves.
The total pieces made was fourteen. Fortunately the
Cherry wood was supplied, dried and donated by one
of our chapter members. There was great fun and
satisfaction felt by our participating members during
the process.
Our April 11th meeting will be devoted to getting
ready for Spring and Summer outdoor activities,
specifically fishing. Our program will be about making
your own fishing rod out of exotic woods. Our speaker
will be Glen Flagler an NWA member and a fishing
rod expert. He will cover design, construction, tools,
wood, and finishing phases. This program should be
extremely interesting, Don’t miss this one!

The SPC has been involved, as an intervener, in
Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation’s lawsuits against
the Hudson River-Black River Regulating District
(HRBRRD). Our primary concern with the litigation has
been Niagara Mohawk’s contention that the HRBRRD’s
Permit System is illegal. We received some welcome
news in early March as the U.S. Court of Appeals sided
with the SPC and HRBRRD on the legality of the Permit
System.
Accepting legal arguments raised by attorneys for
the Sacandaga Protection Committee and the Hudson
River-Black River Regulating District, the U.S. Court
of Appeals for the Second Circuit issued a decision
affirming a federal district court’s dismissal of Niagara
Mohawk Power Corporation’s challenge to the Great
Sacandaga Lake Permit System. The Second Circuit’s
detailed 43-page decision in the matter of Niagara
Mohawk Power Corporation v. Hudson River-Black
River Regulating District was issued on March 7, 2012
following oral argument in New York City on December
2, 2011.
In the case, Niagara Mohawk also sought a refund
of more than $5 million in assessments paid to the
regulating district plus interest. Niagara Mohawk
had also argued that the Federal Power Act preempts
virtually all of the regulating district’s activities,
including operation of the Great Sacandaga Lake Permit
System, maintenance of the watershed, and even flood
control. In the underlying district court case, the U.S.
District Court for the Northern District of New York
(Hon. Norman A. Mordue) dismissed Niagara Mohawk’s
claims.
On appeal, the Second Circuit again rejected
Niagara Mohawk’s preemption claims which would have
affected the permit system. Adopting arguments from
the Sacandaga Protection Committee’s legal briefs and
oral argument, the Second Circuit described Niagara
Mohawk’s interpretation of the Federal Power Act as

“misguided” and strongly criticized Niagara Mohawk
for “misapplying the preemption test” and “again and
again . . . mischaracterizing the holdings” of case law
interpreting the Federal Power Act. As the power
company no longer produces power in the area and
merely owns vacant land, the Federal Power Act does
not apply by its express terms. Therefore, the Second
Circuit affirmed dismissal of the federal preemption
claims. Without expressing an opinion on the merits,
the court remanded claims concerning the amount of
the assessment back to the district court for further
consideration.
In addition to the case in Federal Court, Niagara
Mohawk filed similar lawsuits in State Court. We
continue to monitor these lawsuits to be sure the
interests of the Permit Holders are protected.
HRBRRD Funding Issue/Beneficiaries Study
A draft of the long awaited Oak Ridge National
Laboratory beneficiaries study for the Conklingville
Dam has been published. The report entitled “Draft
Report Headwater Benefits Determination Hudson
River Basin” presents the findings of the Oak Ridge
National Laboratory and the Federal Energy Regulatory
Commission (FERC) with respect to the benefit of
stream flow regulation (i.e., the Sacandaga River) at
downstream power producing facilities. The Sacandaga
Protection Committee has been anxiously awaiting
the results of this study to determine whether it could
impact fees paid by Permit Holders around the lake.
Based on the draft report, it does not appear that the
Permit Holders will be directly impacted by this study;
the recommendations only address the division of costs
for the interest, maintenance and depreciation for the
District.
However, it does not address the monetary
shortfall created by the power companies no longer
being responsible for the other significant costs of the
April 2012
operation of the reservoir, including the payment of
property taxes on the land under the lake.
The majority of these costs have been assigned to five
downstream counties that benefit from flood control.
To date, the downstream counties have refused to pay
these assessments, and the issue is under appeal in
the New York State court system. The SPC considers
the apportionment study and cost assessments serious
issues and will continue to monitor all of these and
other issues as to the effect on the permit holders and
our community. We will continue our discussions with
our Federal and local elected officials, schools districts
and the HRBRRD while working towards a long term
solution for funding the HRBRRD.
Exclusive Use of Permit Lands
The issue of exclusive use of the permit area remains
our highest priority. We understand that this is
extremely important to all permit holders and without
exclusive use, property values around the lake would
fall dramatically. The SPC successfully convinced
HRBRRD to reinstate the “Exclusive Use” terminology
on the permit signs and yearly permit renewals. We
continue to be engaged in active threats to exclusive
use (i.e., Niagara Mohawk lawsuits) and monitor
the activities of the Department of Environmental
Conservation (DEC) and others who would potentially
threaten exclusive use.
One such issue that we are monitoring is a
recent DEC enforcement action related to access to
the community of Beaver River along the Stillwater
Reservoir. Road access to the small community of
Beaver River was cut off in 1924 when the state built
a dam on the Beaver River to control flooding and
generate power. Since that time access to the roughly
120 properties of the Beaver River community has
been via boat in the summer and snowmobile during
the winter. A local family in the community operates
a barge service capable of transporting several vehicles
at a time and essential larger equipment from the

mainland to the isolated community. The DEC has
recently pursued enforcement actions to stop the barge
service from operating citing the fact that the boat
launch is on state-owned Forest Preserve land where
most commercial activities are forbidden.
While this particular issue is specific to Beaver
River, the DEC’s actions related to the use of stateowned land may have a direct impact on commercial
activities surrounding the Sacandaga Lake.
Goals and Funding for 2012
We anticipate our fundraising need to be approximately
$60,000 for 2012. With this level of funding we will
be able to continue our active legal participation in
the ongoing Niagara Mohawk / National Grid lawsuits
with a modest reserve that will allow us to react to
developments related to the other issues that we
continue to monitor.
We depend on the generous contributions from those
with the common interest of protecting our way of life
and property values around the Great Sacandaga Lake.
We thank those who have supported us in the past and
look forward to your continued support. Contributions
may be made via our website or mailed to SPC, PO
Box 86, Mayfield, NY 12117, please include your email
address with your contribution. We encourage you to
contact us with any questions, comments, or concerns
via our website.

Spring Safely into Warm
Weather
Check your smoke detectors for safe
warm-weather seasons
Throughout the country, residents are ready
for a new season! On March 11th we enjoyed the
first sign of spring – the act of springing the clock
forward in accordance with Daylight Saving Time.
Allstate also encourages homeowners to treat
the event as a critical reminder for checking and
replacing the batteries in your home’s smoke
detectors.
“A smoke detector can only save lives if it has
working batteries,” said Allstate NY spokesperson
Jaclyn Darrohn. “Families, including small
children, should know what the smoke detector
sounds like and what to do if they hear it.”
Allstate offers some fire safety basics to discuss
and practice at home with all family members:
· Check the batteries in your smoke detectors
often. Keep extra batteries on hand and replace
them every six months.
· Check your smoke detectors monthly. Replace
any that are 10 years or older. Make sure everyone
April 2012
knows that the piercing sound means danger, and
they should escape quickly.
· Position detectors smartly. Place one on every
level of your home and near areas where you and
your family sleep.
· Keep fire extinguishers handy. Make sure there’s
at least one on each floor – especially near the
kitchen, garage, laundry room and workshop.
· Teach children that they should never hide in
closets or under beds when there is a fire. Tell
them firefighters may look scary when they’re
wearing their protective gear, but they are there to
save you.
· If your clothes are on fire, Stop, Drop & Roll until
the fire is out.
· Talk with your family and make sure everyone
knows what to do in case a fire breaks out. Make
sure you have two ways out of your house. Create a
fire safety plan, with a designated meeting place.
· Inventory your home. Take the time to complete
an inventory record of your personal property. In
addition to completing an inventory record, take
photos or videotape your items – it will make it
easier to replace an item if you have a photo of it.

Northville CSD Continues
Work on 2012-2013 Budget
The Budget Advisory Committee of the
Northville Central School District continues its
work to pare down its revenue-expenditure budget
gap of $260,453 for the 2012-2013 school budget in
order to reach the permitted tax levy increase of
3.53%, which is the maximum allowed by the new
state-imposed tax levy cap, inclusive of exclusions.
Expenditures in the 2012-2013 budget as it currently
stands reflect an overall decrease of 0.14% from the
2011-2012 school year budget.
The Committee is comprised of the five members
of the Northville CSD Board of Education, the School
Superintendent and Building Principals, teachers
and members of the community. Invitations were
issued by the District to local taxpayers who wished
to participate in the process.
As part of the budget reduction process, the
district has given notice to eight employees that the
status of their full-time positions may change for
the next school year. Those position changes could
include a small reduction from full to part-time

status, or full elimination of one or more
positions. Due to state law that requires
layoff notices be distributed by order
of least seniority, all of the possiblyimpacted teachers are least or less senior
in their tenure area. The notices were
distributed to members of the following
departments: elementary classroom;
social studies; special education; music;
speech-language; and physical education.
As part of its budget-cutting efforts,
and in response to the recent reductions
in NYS aid to the District of over
$1,000,000, the District has reduced
its staffing by 23.6 persons over the
past three years. Other cost-cutting
efforts have included the elimination of
stipends for coaches and club advisors;
elimination of field trips; larger class
sizes at all levels; reductions in high
school electives; changes in health
insurance provisions; and multi-age
grouping in elementary classrooms. In
addition, all employees in the district
took a full salary freeze for the 2011-2012
school year, and many members of the
staff and community have volunteered to
serve as coaches and club advisors.
NCSD Superintendent Kathy
Dougherty stated, “The Budget
Advisory Committee has been working
diligently to analyze the projected
12-13 expenditures and creatively
close the budget gap without any
additional impacts upon the provision of
programs and services for our students.
However, with the previous cuts that
we have made, we are now at a point
of diminishing returns, where every
reduction will have a very serious
impact upon our students. It is truly
unfortunate that our Governor and
legislators enacted this tax levy cap
without fulfilling the promise they made
to schools and their students to also
enact meaningful mandate relief prior to
the institution of the cap. Their failure
to follow through on their promise will
result in the failure of our students to
receive the level of education that they
so desperately need in order to compete
with students from other districts and
ultimately to reach their college and
career goals.”

DID YOU KNOW
THAT—
by Town of Edinburg Historian,
Priscilla L. Edwards
The Civil War or the Great Rebellion of 1861 had
its first battle on July 21, 1861 at the 1st Battle of
Bull Run at Manassas, Virginia. Much to the surprise
of the North their Union army was defeated. A
month later the Honorable James B. McKean, a NYS
Congressman from Saratoga Springs, issued a letter to
his constituents asking for men to organize companies
to defend the North.
The 77th Regiment of NY Volunteers were mostly
recruited from Saratoga County with the exception of
a company from Westport, one from Keeseville-both in
Essex County & one from Gloversville in Fulton county.
The adjutant-general’s office in Albany immediately
established a branch depot and recruiting office at
Saratoga Springs, using the county fair-grounds east
of the village to receive the troops. This rendezvous
spot was called “Camp Schuyler” and by Oct. 1
seven companies of over six hundred men had
arrived for training. The Saratoga, Ballston, Wilton,
Northumberland, Greenfield, Charlton and Westport
companies were the first seven to arrive.
Waterford, Stillwater, Half-Moon, Clifton Park,
Edinburgh and Providence came soon after. These last
six companies were consolidated into one company with
J.B. Andrews as captain, Jesse White as 1st lieutenant
and John J. Cameron as 2nd lieutenant.
The company from Keeseville and one from
Greenwich, Washington County arrived bringing to
completion the 77th Regiment of NY Volunteers.
After training and more re-vamping of companies
the 77th was mustered and sworn in “for a term of the
war unless sooner discharged”. They took the train
to Albany; by boat to New York City; from there to
Washington, DC. On Feb. 15, 1862 they crossed the
Potomac River, joining the 3rd Brigade of the 2nd
Division at Camp Griffin-belonging to this division
for the remainder of the war. Nine young men from
Edinburgh enlisted in the 77th.
Nineteen year old Lorin Cole was the son of Asaph
and Sarah Cole. Sarah died when Lorin was born. He
enlisted Oct. 1, 1861 as a private in Co. C, dying later
in a hospital in Georgetown. His father and brothers
moved to Michigan. Lorin was the youngest brother of
my gr. gr. grandmother Lura Cole Edwards Tennant.
George L. Hayden, born c. 1839, enlisted Oct.
7,1861, private Co. D. He fell overboard from the US
steamer “Knickerbocker” and was drowned. His body
was recovered and buried May 17, 1862. He was the son
of Solomon and Anna Hayden.
Born c.1839 John H. Hulburt, corp. Co. C, enlisted
Oct. 1, 1861; discharged with his regiment, Dec. 13,
1864. In 1860-prior to the war- he was boarding at the

Even better, come and worship with us. We meet at 10
AM each Sunday Morning.
Last December I received an unexpected call from
my pastor asking if I would be willing to help out at
Sacandaga Christian Fellowship. Immediately my
mind went back forty years & more. My Dad was
pastor of the church for nearly 7 years. It was there
that I met my wife, Doris Bills. We had our two girls
while attending church on Fox Hill. My wife’s mother
& others of her relatives had attended the church in
years gone by.
There were a number of fond memories. There
were Christmas programs that we went out into the
woods to gather decorations for. There was an Easter
bouquet of wild flowers that we made on a long and
wide tray. Soon remembrances went back to those who
attended our Sunday school classes and the church
picnics. The fondest memories were of the services
where we met the Lord of our lives. God moved among
us. We went from worship prepared to carry on God’s
purpose for our lives.
Our journey in life took us to other churches to

assist with building the church
of Jesus Christ. A new church
was born. There were the times
when churches needed a pastor
on a temporary basis. What a
privilege to lead in worship, teach
Sunday school classes , direct
choirs and counsel those with
need. It was great to teach for
three weeks in Belarus.
A lot has happened since
then. The Fox Hill Church
became Sacandaga Christian
Fellowship. It offered joy, peace
and hope in Jesus Christ to
those attending. It reached out
into the community and those of
neighboring communities. The
attendance grew and the word
was out about what a blessing
worship could be. Churches are
not immune to difficult times.
Like with individuals, the strength of faith for a
church is built through how it stands up to those
times. It was not difficult to discover that love,
faith, forgiveness and hope continued. There was
a desire to meet, to
worship our Savior
and experience the
close knit fellowship
of those that attended

Raising a Family:
At Home in the Valley
by Maria Spaeth
Whoever said that there are four seasons in a
typical year never lived in the Valley. Here, we
lay claim to at least five seasons. We have the

be a confusing time of year for some who see the

one win? The satisfaction of totally confusing your
neighbors and your mother when you walk around
with mud up to your gills. Dirt does wash off. At
least that is what I tell myself when my little ones
play their own “mud games.”
Sugaring season is well on its way during this
very brown time of year and what a sight to behold.
Sap buckets and lines are running through the trees
bringing that tasty sap to be boiled down into syrup.

SACANDAGA GARDEN

March and April aare tricky months because the
weather is so unpredictable. Still it is time to get a
head start on some of our garden activities. Weed
seeds live in the soil for years and any cultivation
brings them to the surface. If you start early you will
have less of a headache during the summer. As soon
as the soil can be worked – when it is not a clump of
wet soil in your hand – take a hoe and remove any
emerging weeds. Do this every week until the soil
warms up and then add mulch and you will be amazed
at how few weeds you have to deal with. If you are in
the mood, now is a good time to turn the compost pile,
if not just leave it. It will take longer to decompose
but it will eventually get there. Add any debris you
collect from cleaning up the beds after winter. It’s a
great time to get a pH test to see if you need to add
anything. In our area soils tend to be on the acidic
side and if your soil needs lime it can take six months
before an application will affect the acidity. Check the

lawn for damaged areas and if you need to overseed,
do it now. Also, don’t forget your garden mower; give
it a tune up for the season and make sure you sharpen
the blades. Those blades should be sharpened
frequently during the season to avoid tearing the
grass.
In yiour perennial beds, check for plants that
have heaved up due to freezing and thawing action.
Gently push them back into the soil. Wait to do any
transplanting or dividing until you see new growth
popping up. I have a couple of big stands of sedum
that I plan to divide and move to a new bed with some
ornamental grasses. Sedum and grasses make a
lovely combination with the stiff stalks of the sedum
playing off the delicate grass leaves that move in the
wind so gracefully. Look at your hybrid tea roses and
start to pull the mulch away. Do it gradually so that
new growth is still protected from a hard freeze but
they can gradually become accustomed to more light
and air. Prune them when you see the first buds
beginning to swell. Make cuts just below an outward
facing bud so that new growth grows outward giving
the plant better air circulation. Prune off any dead
wood, thin stems and any crossing branches and
don’t leave trimmings in the garden because they can
harbor spores from black spot and powdery mildew.
Mid April is a good time to start planting gladiolus
bulbs. Plant every two weeks up until July and you
will have armloads of flowers to brighten your rooms.
As I write this in mid March, my daffies are
poking through and soon I will have large swaths of
crocus in bloom. You can leave the crocus to mature
as they are but you should cut the daffy heads off as
they die. Leave the stalks though because they pull
nutrients from the leaves to the bulbs for next year’s
flowers. You can disguise them with the emerging
April 2012
growth of hostas and daylilies. As the daffies start to
grow it is a good time to fertilize your bulb beds and in
fact all of your beds will benefit from a spring feeding.
If you use synthetic fertilizers sprinkle some 5-10-5
all around. If you prefer organic fertilizers, then wait
until the soil has warmed a bit, Organic fertilizers
work better with a warmer soil.
In the veggie garden take time to add organic
material to the soil if you didn’t do it in the fall. Just
pile an inch or so on top and worms and bacteria
will take care of mixing it in. You can plant your
transplants through it. Soil temperatures should
be around 40F before you start planting which
means around mid April for peas. Brussel sprouts,
cauliflower, celery, leeks, onions, early potatoes,
radish seeds, spinach, chard, cabbage can be seeded or
set out sometime in April depending on the weather.
Our frost free date is around the last week in May so
check your calendar and seed information on the back
of the seed packets before starting your seeds indoors.
Our first big snowstorm of the year caused us to
cancel our presentation on orchids in March. But I am
glad to say that we were able to reschedule the talk for
June 7. It will be at the Northville Public Library so
mark your calendars now.
In April we are pleased to welcome Viktoria
Serafin who will present a talk on wildflowers. This
is another in our series of talks for the community.
Come and join us on Thursday, April 5. at the library
in the upstairs meeting room at 1: 30 .m. We will have
refreshments and a chance to get to know everyone
afterwards. Our club will have a short meeting at
1:00 p.m. before the presentation and if you want to
sit in, you will be most welcome.
As always you can reach us at POBox 675,

the bridge since it was restored.
The Edinburg Historical Society remains
committed to preserving these sites. To do this, we
must ask our community and visitors to help. Please

The Rest of the Story!
Last month I shared about our upcoming trip to
Mali, Africa. It would take volumes to give you all
the details, but I’ll share a few highlights from our
amazing trip! (I’m typing this from my laptop on our 8
hour return flight since I have plenty of time to reflect
and type!) We flew to Bamako, the capital city of Mali,
where my husband spoke at a five day conference for
the missionaries in Mali and to the national pastors
in Mali. Of course, he spoke through a translator since
he doesn’t speak French or Bambara. I spoke at a
tea for the missionary wives. Rick preached with two
translators one Sunday at the largest Protestant church
in Mali! At the service there were two choirs, one sang
in Bambara and the other in French. It was a wonderful
experience to take part in their service. The conference
ended with a Mishuee (this is a sheep roast). This was
especially enjoyed by the African pastors.
We stayed with our missionary friends, Rich and
Anna Marshall, at the Mission’s Guest House. While
there we also toured parts of the city and went out into
the bush to some villages. This was very humbling! We
take for granted our easy lifestyle and conveniences
here in America! The poorest
person here is rich compared
to these people. Most have
no clean running water or
flush toilets. They cook over
open fires, outside. Life is
hard! In Mali people line the
Hydraulic Lifts
streets selling their wares;
vegetables, fruits, hand
woven baskets, homemade
jewelry, pottery or woven
fabric. Very young children
Floating Docks
are carrying little babies
around and women carry
everything on their heads.
(I have no idea how they
do this?) Motorcycles are
everywhere and the traffic
Cantilever Lifts
was horrendous! You would
see trucks piled high with
mattresses, bicycles¸ goats,
chickens and people. One of
the things that surprised us
was all the garbage in the
streets. It was everywhere,
especially black plastic bags.
All Terrain Staircases
Sanitation is a huge problem.
April 2012
WWW.EDINBURGNEWSLETTER.COM
It was very hot there, most days over 100 degrees. Most
people take siestas after lunch, which we also did.
Education is very important in Mali, but they have
a problem. Because the universities are so full and Mali
provides a free college education to HS graduates, they
will not allow many students to graduate from HS.
Even in the bush there were schools. We visited one
of these schools. It had 3 rooms, 3 teachers and about
90-100 students, grades 1st-6th. When we came into
the classrooms the children were very respectful and
all stood quietly and greeted us in English – with a
hello. They had their lessons taught to them from one
blackboard and school would last from 8AM to 5PM,
with a lunch break. Some of these kids walked miles to
school. They seemed to have no discipline problems and
the kids looked happy. Their bathroom was an outdoor
building with no roof and it had a square hole you
squatted over. To show the bathroom was in use, you
slung a piece of clothing over the wall to show it was
occupied. Most villages had no clean water. The water
looked pretty dirty. Our hosts, the Marshalls, work with
drilling wells in villages to provide people with clean
water for them to drink, water their gardens and feed
their animals. It was really thrilling to see this!
After the conference we took a two day trip to
Timbuktu. The meetings were originally scheduled to

be held in Timbuktu but were changed to Bamako due
to rebel activity there. (In late November four people
were kidnapped from a hotel in Timbuktu. Three are
still held hostage and the one man was killed on the
sidewalk for refusing to get in the captor’s car!) We
were told it was now safe to travel there, so off we
went! This was quite a trip! We experienced very bad
roads, super narrow, and bumpy and then even bumpier
dirt roads the second day. The terrain was desolate
looking, just sand and a few scruffy bushes. On our
trip we stopped to take pictures of the Bowbow Trees,
which looked like the Keebler Elf’s Cookie House.
You could stand in these trees and look way up inside
the tree. We also stopped to take pictures of huge ant
hills, which were everywhere! Some of them were over
12 feet high! Goats, donkeys, cows, sheep and camels
were everywhere – they free range and would often be
in the middle of the road. The donkeys never seemed
concerned to move out of your way! Right at dusk a
large troop of red monkeys crossed in front of us. We
immediately turned around to find them and take
their pictures. You can just drive off road most places,
although, that was even bumpier. I was constantly
looking for elephants, hippos, giraffes or lions. Our
hosts told us it was rare to see them in their area, but I
watched for them anyway!
April 2012
As we traveled through small villages and towns,
everyone waved and smiled at us. They love having
their pictures taken! (I wanted to take several babies
and children home with me!) We took a ferry on
the Niger River near the end of our trip. Sometimes
you can wait four hours for the ferry to come, but
when we arrived the ferry boat was there and we left
immediately. We were headed to the Sahara Desert! We
spent one day in Timbuktu and had a tour of the city
and even rode past the hotel where the hostages were
kidnapped. (That was an eerie feeling!) We enjoyed
visiting this city, walking on the Sahara Desert’s sand
dunes, seeing camels and viewing first hand the Living
Water Project where over 70 families have gardens to
provide for their families. Right in the middle of the
desert were these lush gardens! It was amazing! Before
driving back to Bamako to catch our flights, some men
from Timbuktu came to meet us. They sat in a circle in
the courtyard and their spokesman told us (through an
interpreter) that they would have liked to have had a
big party with dancing to celebrate us being there, but
the situation in Timbuktu prevented that right now.
They thanked us for helping Rich and Anna to come
to Timbuktu to help them and for the Living Water
Project. (Rich and Anna have been there 26 years now.)

Their spokesman gave a long speech of gratitude. I
sat there looking around at these people who looked
different than us, spoke a different language than us,
and had very little, compared to us. Tears were flowing
down my cheeks and I couldn’t stop. This was the most
humbling experience I have ever had! I hope I never
forget it. My husband then gave his thanks to them for
their kind words and he shared our appreciation for all
that had been accomplished there. He asked them if he
could pray for them and they answered yes. He gave a
prayer for God to bless them in Jesus name. What more

The Eagle’s Eye on
Kindergarten
by Mrs. Anne Jones
The Kindergarten class has been working
very hard learning to read. They are able to
smooth blend three and four letter words and are
now reading simple stories. The students enjoy
practicing a story on their own, and then reading it
to the entire class. Each week the class learns new
sight words. Some of them are as, said, has, with,
is, she, he, him, her, that, would and could. The kindergarteners are also developing
beginning writing skills. They have learned about
capital letters and that all sentences need end
marks. They are also exploring the many purposes
for writing. They had fun making individual lists,
sharing them with their classmates, and then
letting everyone guess the type of list. The class is
just beginning to learn about the writing process,
starting with prewriting. They created a topic
list, added details, and then wrote a few simple
sentences.
In math class they are working on counting by
10’s, learning to tell time to the hour and counting
pennies, dimes and nickels.

TOPS 1005 Northville
TOPS NY 1005 Northville attended the Gloversville
TOPS Chapter(735) meeting as they had Dr. Pelizza guest
speaking for the month of February. He is a motivational
speaker and we enjoyed his perspective on weight loss. His
change model included the following:
Environment, multiple support, and reinforcement......
The first step in any weight loss is to know yourself...
For each person the payoff from weight loss will be
different, but there has to be a pay off or the change
doesn’t happen!!As we are all aware, cravings also are a
trigger associated with eating.. Do you eat while watching
TV? When you get home from work? Later at night? It
is possible to retrain your body and eliminate many food
cravings that are elicited by different situations! This is
just a sample of what we discuss at our meetings!
Our TOPS best loser for the month was Arden
Detweiler.
Other losers for the month were.... Hadley Jacobs and
Judy Frasier.
We held our annual elections and the results were:
Nancy Bassett- Leader, Helen Harrington- Co Leader,
Arden Detweiler- Secretary, Terry Poulin- Treasurer......
Weight recorder- Cathe Bard, Assisant weight recordersLeslie Casey and Bev Morgan.
Our meetings are a time to share weight loss successes
and challenges without feeling uncomfortable. At TOPS,
everyone has different health issues and weight loss goals.
Your personal health care professional is the one that takes
into account your individual requirements and advises
you about an appropriate food plan...your TOPS chapter
provides the ideas & support to help you achieve your plan!
Come join us on Tuesdays at the Bradt Building
in Northville. Weigh in is from 5:00-5:30pm with the
meeting to begin soon after. One meeting is free. For more

split second and then the moment was gone.
Talking to people who live, work or visit their
loved ones there, take the stress out of the visits. Last
November I met Roy for the first time. He would come
in daily and eat with his bride of 67 years. When I
came back down in February, Roy was also living in
the nursing home. His humor and wit is still there and
I guess that he is happy because Georgianna is his
world. Their smiles and the love in their eyes, make you
feel happy to be with them; if only for a few moments.
Another favorite person of mine is Dawn. She is there
due to a medical condition but trying to move up to
Georgia to live with her sister. She is an awesome
woman, always welcoming and friendly. She is the
prayer captain of the nursing home and she prays daily
for everyone there. We have a shared interest in jewelry.
I have some feather earrings that she loves and one day
when Bill and I were out shopping I found her some. I
was so excited I felt like a kid giving a special present at
Christmas. I was disappointed when she was not there
when I went in the next day. I felt like an impatient
child but she was thrilled when she did get them. For
me it was a wonderful moment. My mom may not know
I am her daughter but I found that I met some beautiful
people. These people accept their lives for what it is and
deal with the situation with grace and humor. On the
other side, there are some crusty characters that can
spew venom and be really mean. I find myself wondering
if this is a result of their illness, age, circumstance OR if
they were always just miserable people.
There is a nursing home in the Florida Keys that we
often walk by. The sign out front says this is the place
where age is treated with respect and lifelong wisdom
is honored. I have been walking by that sign for 7 years
and I recently read it again and understood it! We spend
so much time with our immediate family and friends
that we sometimes shut out the older people in it. Our
parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles have some
much history stored inside them.
My Great Grandfather started our company in 1927.
My dad is always telling me stories about growing up
in a drilling business in this area. There are so many
stories to be told. The more they are told, the more they
can be remembered and passed down to our children
and grandchildren. I want them to know they are
connected to this great area through the generations.
Time marches on and many of us try and fight it, but the
reality is we are getting older and we will someday be
the old people. Reconnect with the older people in your
family. If they are gone, and you have time, volunteer
with seniors. Let them know that you are celebrating life
and help them to celebrate too. Spring is the time of new
beginnings no matter what our age.
Happy spring to all of you!

Did You Know
My article this month is of a different nature. Bill
says it is kind of “dark” but after the last few months
I felt it was a story I had to tell. Some of you, I
know, can relate.
As a child you never think about your parents
getting old and needing nursing home care. It is hard
for me to believe that my mom has been in a nursing
home for almost 3 years. Last year because of all my
health issues I did not get to see her as much as I
would have liked. I try to visit at least 3 times per
year. While she does not know who I am it is ok. I
am really there to be with my Dad who is with her
every day. When we are elsewhere, we go about our
daily life and often miss the actual picture of what is
really going on in someone else’s. Nursing homes are
interesting communities. It is one, where none of us
really want to go.
Circumstances dictate otherwise and it can
take some getting used to. When I walk in the door
of the nursing home, most of the staff do not know
me; many of the people who live there do. Jimmy is
the front door greeter. He tells me where to find my
mother and my father. I count on him to be there!
No one remembers my name but they know that I

am Faye’s daughter. They mostly want to know
if I have the baby (Acadia) with me. They are
disappointed when I tell them she is home. They
tell me how my Mom has been doing, as they daily
look for improvements in each other. They watch
what is going on and always tell me how happy
she is to see me. I always bring my lap top which
is loaded with pictures of Lucas and Acadia. Sadly
she rarely acknowledges it. She might reach out
to touch it because it is something different but
she really does not focus on the screen. This year
Santa came to see the kids on Christmas Eve and
we have some great videos of the night. This is the
first thing she seemed to respond to. There was
something about the kid’s excitement that she
seemed to like. I played this video several times for
her. One day after the third time, she reached out
and touched the computer screen. Next she turned
and looked at me with tears in her eyes. It was one
