and International Media to Reception at Nascar Hall of Fame

The Democratic National Convention Committee held a reception for the media
in Charlotte, at the Nascar Hall of Fame, as a part of their “ Winter Walk Thru.”
Hundreds of Media representatives, from newspapers, magazines, TV stations,
and more, attended the event. There was local, national and international media
representatives present for the event. The Democratic National Convention is
scheduled to take place in September of this year.
Media Representatives were given a tour of the Time Warner Cable Arena, the
Charlotte Convention Center, and several meetings were held by the Democratic
National Convention staff, who were on hand for questions and answers. Pictured
here are photos of the many media representatives who attended the event.

Leadership Conference on Civil
and Human Rights recently
released vote ratings for every
member of the Congress for
the First Session of the 112th
Congress. The Voting Record,
which has been published for
every Congress since 1969,
reflects positions taken by
every
senator
and
representative on the
legislative priorities of The
Leadership Conference and its
more than 200 coalition
members.
Members of Congress were
graded on 18 House and 15
Senate votes addressing jobs,
health care, workerʼs rights,
immigration, and more.
The Leadership Conference
blamed the lack of progress on
these issues during this
session on an unprecedented
level of obstruction and
polarization. There was a
sharp drop in the number of
House members supporting
civil rights priorities on at least
90% of votes – from 217 during
the last Congress to 148 during
this Congress. The ratings are
neither an endorsement nor
condemnation of any member
of Congress.
“In historical terms, the session
was one of the least productive
on record – and one of the
least popular,” said Nancy
Zirkin, executive vice president
of The Leadership Conference.

CDC Takes New Steps to
Combat Childhood Obesity
Centers for Disease Control
announced recently new steps to
combat childhood obesity. The new
research project will focus on doctors,
communities and families to help
children make healthy choices
The Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) today launched a
new effort to address childhood
obesity using successful elements of
both primary care and public health.
Funding made available through the
Affordable Care Act will support a four
year Childhood Obesity
Demonstration Project. Supported by
$25 million in funding awards, the
project will build on existing
community efforts and will work to
identify effective health care and
community strategies to support
childrenʼs healthy eating and active
living and help combat childhood
obesity. The project will target children ages
2–12 years covered by the Childrenʼs
Health Insurance Program (CHIP),
which provides low cost health
insurance to over 7 million children
from working families. Rates of
childhood obesity are high overall, but
for minority and low–income
communities in particular, they are
even higher. Using innovative
approaches to reach low–income and
minority families to tackle childhood
obesity prevents the onset of many
diseases associated with childhood
obesity, including type 2 diabetes,
asthma, and heart disease. These innovative approaches include
combining changes in preventive care
at doctor visits with supportive
changes in schools, child care
centers, and community venues
such as retail food stores and
parks. Community health workers
will provide a bridge between
families and resources in their
communities in order to inform and
educate hard–to–reach, limited
English proficiency, and minority
communities about disease
prevention (including obesity),
health insurance enrollment
opportunities, and disease
m a n a g e m e n t . Overall, the
granteesʼ work will focus on
strategies that improve childrenʼs
health behaviors by involving the
children themselves, their parents
and other family members and the
communities in which they live.
“Over the last three decades,
obesity rates among children and
adolescents have nearly tripled,”
said CDC Director Thomas R.
Frieden, MD, MPH. “Obese
children are more likely to have
asthma, depression, diabetes, and
other serious and costly health
problems. This project will help
figure out ways our children can
grow up to lead long, healthy and
productive lives.”
The project grantees include three
research facilities, each of which will
receive approximately $6.2 million
over four years, to identify effective
childhood obesity prevention
strategies. The evaluation center
will receive about $4.2 million over
four years and will determine
successful strategies and share
lessons and successes.

Thousands of people in North
Carolina are homeless.
On
Saturday, May 19 at the Hilton
Executive Park, Savoir-Faire
Magazine will host a Health &
Beauty Expo and All Nations
Fashion Show/Model Search. A
portion of the proceeds benefits
the Charlotte Rescue Mission
Women and Childrenʼs Center.
The mission is currently building a
200 room shelter for homeless
women and children on West
Boulevard in Charlotte.
According to the North Carolina
Interagency Council for
Coordinating Homeless Programs,
the last survey reported that nearly
13,000 people are homeless in
North Carolina.
The people
inlcude over 2,000 children,
veterans, mentally ill persons,
victims of domestic violence,
substance abusers, people
released from jail, and those
released from mental hospitals.
These numbers only include those
that “identified” themselves as
homeless.

Isaac E. Washington, a 19-year
old author wrote a book called,
“Stars in My Dreams.” The
setting of the book is in
Charlotte.
The author
describes Charlotte as an
extremely beautiful place. The
book is written in an extremely
creative manner. You get to
read into the mind of a
teenager.
This
multidimensional love story
explores teenage love and
relationships and focuses on
the love relationship between a
boy, Derek and a girl named
Marina.
The book is getting rave

you on a mysterious journey
from the mind of a young

Salmonella Poisoning Outbreak Linked to
Ground Beef Found in 7 States
According to information provided
by the Centers for Disease
Control, a total of 19 persons
infected with the outbreak strain of
Salmonella Typhimurium have
been reported from 7 states. The
number of ill persons identified in
each state is as follows: HI (1),
KY (1), MA (1), ME (4), NH (6),
NY (5), and VT (1).
Collaborative investigative efforts
of state, local, and federal public
health and regulatory agencies
indicated that this outbreak is
linked to eating ground beef
purchased from Hannaford
Supermarkets.
Contaminated
ground beef was recalled from
grocery stores but may still be in
consumers' homes. Consumers
should check their homes for
recalled products and not eat
them; restaurant and food service
operators should not serve them.
CDC is collaborating with public
health officials in several states
and the U.S. Department of
Agriculture's Food Safety and
Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS)
to investigate the multistate
outbreak of Salmonella
Typhimurium infections linked to
eating ground beef purchased
from Hannaford Supermarkets.
Representatives from Hannaford
have been cooperating with public
health officials throughout the
investigation. Public health
investigators are using DNA
" fi n g e r p r i n t s " o f S a l m o n e l l a
bacteria obtained through
diagnostic testing with pulsed-field
gel electrophoresis (PFGE) to
identify cases of illness that may
be part of this outbreak.
Investigators are using data from
PulseNet, the national subtyping
network made up of state and
local public health laboratories
and federal food regulatory
laboratories that performs
molecular surveillance of
foodborne infections. The
outbreak strain of Salmonella
Typhimurium is resistant to
several commonly prescribed
antibiotics. This antibiotic
resistance may be associated
with an increase in the risk of
hospitalization or possible
treatment failure in infected
individuals. Among persons for
whom information is available,
illnesses began on or after
October 8, 2011. Ill persons
range in age from 1 year to 79
years old, with a median age of
44 years old. Fifty-three percent
are male. Among the 15 ill
persons with available
information, 7 (47%) have been
hospitalized. No deaths have
been reported.
Nutmeg: More Than Just a Spice, Kids are
Using it to Get High Can Cause Coma, Death
If you think nutmeg is just a
spice you use to make your
candied yams, and sweet potato
pies, think again.
Teens are
using nutmeg to get high. It is a
powerful hallucinogen that
causes you to have crazy
behavior, bizarre conversation,
visual, auditory and tactile
hallucinations with nausea,
vomiting, hot/cold sensations,
blurred vision, double and triple
vision. The condition is called,
“chronic nutmeg psychosis. An
overdose can be fatal.
One
teen found to be using the
spice, has been diagnosed
with schizophrenia, because
the nutmeg causes all the
symptoms of schizophrenia
including, extreme paranoia,
irrational fears, irritability, and
many other psychotic
behaviors. It has been treated
the same as those who are
addicted to LSD.
The
symptoms recurr even when
the spice is not being used.
People used to get high on
nutmeg in the early 1900ʼs but
there has been a resurgence of
it. It may be because of the
internet and teens have access
to the internet.
Nutmeg is
relatively cheap to buy in the
supermarkets. This addiction is
real according to several studies
and hospital reports.
The nutmeg has an ingredient
called myristica fragrans.
People are being taken to the
hospital. The constant use of
nutmeg can lead to chronic
nutmeg psychosis, shock,
coma, and death.

Peggy Davis Named Interim Commission for the CIAA
HAMPTON, Va. – The Central
Intercollegiate Athletic Association
(CIAA) and its Chairman – Dr.
Mickey Burnim announced the
appointment of Peggy Davis as
Interim Commissioner for the
Conference. Davis, whose role is
effective December 10, has been
a part of the CIAA family since
1997 where she held the titles of
Head Womenʼs Basketball Coach,
Associate Athletic Director and
Senior Woman Administrator at
Virginia State University (VSU) in
Petersburg, Va. In July of 2003,
Davis was named Athletic Director
at VSU.
“The CIAA Board of Directors is
very pleased that Ms. Davis has
agreed to accept this assignment
and serve this great Conference in
that capacity”, stated Chairman of
the CIAA, Dr. Mickey Burnim. “Her
accomplishments are exemplary
and well respected across the
Conference and beyond.” Davis
plays a vital role as a member of
the CIAA 100th Anniversary
Planning Committee.
Davisʼs accomplishments are vast.
She is a two-time Hall of Fame
recipient (at VSU and Howard
Payne University), Davis has been
named Athletic Director of the Year
of the CIAA four of the last five
years 2006-07, 2007-08, 2009-10
and again in 2010-11. Davis was
also recognized this year by the
National Association of Collegiate
Directors of Athletics (NACDA) as
the 2010-11 Under Armour SE
Region for Division II Athletics
Director of the Year. She was also
honored with the Jannette A. Lee
Administration Achievement Award in
2005 and 2010.
Davis is past President of the CIAA
Executive Committee, as well as the
CIAA Athletic Directorʼs Association.
She is also a member of the CIAA
Tournament Committee. She holds
memberships in the National
Association of Collegiate Women
Athletic Administrators (NACWAA),
National Association of Collegiate
Directors of Athletics (NACDA), and
the Womenʼs Basketball Coaches
Association (WBCA). Davis also sits
on the NCAA Division II Menʼs
a n d W o m e n ʼ s Te n n i s
Committee representing the
Atlantic Region.

Complications
Preterm, or premature, delivery
is the most frequent cause of
infant mortality, accounting for
more than one third of all infant
deaths during the first year of
life. The infant mortality rate
among black infants is 2.4 times
higher than that of white infants,
primarily due to preterm birth. In
the United States, the risk of
preterm birth for Non-Hispanic
black women is approximately
1.5 times the rate seen in white
women.
Preterm birth is when a baby is
born before 37 complete weeks
of pregnancy. Preterm infants
who live beyond the first year
may suffer more because it is
also the leading cause of severe
neurologic disability, including
cerebral palsy and intellectual
disabilities. In addition to the
physical and emotional impact
resulting from preterm births,
recent estimates of the economic
costs to society provided by the
Institutes of Medicine suggest
that at least $26 billion is spent
each year for hospitalizations of
preterm infants. This estimation
of cost does not include the cost
of re-hospitalizations and longterm care.
“In terms of the health of women
and infants, preterm birth is an
important public health priority,”
said Dr. Eve Lackritz, Chief,
Maternal and Infant Health
Branch at the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC). “Preterm delivery is the
leading cause of hospitalization
among pregnant women, is the
most frequent cause of infant
deaths, and is a major contributor
to the racial disparity in the infant
mortality rate.”
Despite continuing efforts to
understand and prevent preterm
birth, the rate has increased more
than 20 percent since 1990 and
more than 36 percent since the
early 1980s. In 2006 the preterm
birth rate rose to 12.8 percent of
all births up from 12.7 percent in
2005. This percentile equates to
more than 545,000 preterm
deliveries out of the 4,265,555
births registered in the United
States in 2006; a statistically
disproportionate
percentage of which were births to
non-Hispanic Black women.
Explanations presented for the
increase in preterm delivery are
many and include the rise in the
rate of multiple births, the
increased use of procedures to
manage labor and delivery such
as induction of labor and cesarean
delivery earlier in the pregnancy,
and changes in maternal lifestyle
and health.

Gang leader Rufus Buck was
half-black and half Creek Indian.
One African-American and three
full-blooded Creeks completed
the gang. The idea of young blacks
and Indians banding together in
1895 to expel whites from Indian
lands may seem strange, but turnof-the-century Indian Territory was
not only violent and politically
volatile, but astonishingly multiracial. "I had first read about the gang
almost twenty years ago," says

brown victims fighting back."
Even more remarkable was the
gang's involvement with iconic
real-life western characters, like
legendary "Hanging Judge" Isaac
Parker and notorious half-black,
half-Cherokee outlaw Cherokee
Bill. "This was a multi-racial gang
of teens who innocently, foolishly
and often viciously sought to right
a wrong." In the novel, Rufus
Buck's personal story and his zeal
to reclaim Indian lands with the tool
he knows -- violence --plays
against the social and political
machinations surrounding
America's grasp for land. The
result is a rich historical tapestry, a
shocking story of violence and
innocence, love and betrayal,
butchery and grace.
Gaiter hopes that the novel will
expand African-Americans' view of
their own history. "We've fallen into
this ditch in which our history is
limited to views of us as saints and
victims. We are infinitely more than
that. The Buck Gang was a
product of its time, and they were
no saints. They are, however, a
great piece of history and a

incredibly compelling and tragic
