One Hundred Years of Patterson Weddings
This issue of the Gateway is acknowledging the
100 years of the Patterson lrrigator's continuous
publication of the local news. Its first issue was August
31 , 1911. There have been ten owner/publishers of the
lrrigator. Elwyn Hoffman was the starting publisher
continuing with Ron Swift who sold to the present owner
Robert Matthews. Of all the topics covered in the paper,
weddings have been chosen to show the diversity and the
similarities in the customs of the people who made up the
readership of the Patterson lrrigator for 100 years.
In the early papers there was no photography and the
wedding articles were normally short. It is noted that most
of the weddings of Pattersonites were in private homes and
nearby towns--many with ceremonies performed by a
Justice of the Peace. Very few of the reported weddings
were in local churches. Garden flowers were the usual for
decorations. A short honeymoon was often followed by a
Cheverie in these early-day weddings. This was always a
surprise night party given by friends at the newly wed ' s
home with food, drink, merriment and at times raucous
behavior.
In the mid-thirties wedding reporting took on a new
look with descriptions of the bridal attire and the bridal
party as well as the mothers. Weddings became more
elaborate. The dress of all in the wedding party was more
formal and decorations used more sophisticated flowers .
During this decade pictures started to appear in the
newspaper.
In the forties there were the marriages occurring around
the groom ' s military furlough . Many a planned wedding
was reduced to a simple vow exchange with the bride
wearing a suit or street length dress with a corsage.
Honeymoons consisted of a weekend. The bride in many
cases went to live with his or her parents waiting until she
could join her husband or until he came home from the war.
The war years plus the three years after produced as many
weddings as had taken place in the 30 year history of the
town . .
The fifties brought about larger weddings with fuller
descriptions of bridal attire, church and reception
decorations. At this time, the new fabric nylon became a
favorite choice for wedding gowns and mother's dresses.
Weddings by this time were taking place in local churches
and receptions were growing in size.
Up through the 60's most all weddings were reported
to the lrrigator for publication. From the 70's onward
fewer and fewer weddings were published. The articles
became more stream lined with only basic facts of those
involved, education, jobs, honeymoon destinations, and
first home locations. Details of parent's dress and
decorations were no longer reported.
Few weddings in the Twenty First century are reported
to the Patterson Irrigator. They are nearly all in a church
with little or no description of anything other than the
place where the wedding and reception took place, the
names of the bridal couple, attendants, and parents, and
honeymoon destination. Emphasis is now placed on the
education, jobs, hobbies and interests of the bridal pair.
In these past hundred years the wedding articles in the
Patterson Irrigator have reflected fashions, impact of the
economy, war time life, types of jobs, friends and
entertainment styles plus a personal history of the parties
involved. We can only imagine what and how the
Patterson Irrigator will be reporting weddings through the
next l 00 years.
The material gathering for this Gateway has
been in the works for over five years. Great
gratitude goes to those who have spent countless
hours to bring this project to fruition. They are the
microfilm readers - Ellie Lanfranki and Milt
Maxheimer, the transcribers- Robert Callahan,
Gale Stroud, Carol Scoles, Bruce Bickle, Mel
Clemmer, and Faye Hill and the computer data
entry person Durwood Hicks. Because of these
people we not on ly have the material for this
Gateway but also a resource file of every wedding
article in the Patterson Irrigator. The computer can
access all this information quickly for anyone
interested.

As summer quickly approaches, we look forward to
longer days and warmer weather. What that means for
our beloved museum is more improvements in the form
of some much needed freshening up.
As soon as the Apricot Fiesta is over, the work will
begin. New flooring and a fresh coat of interior paint will
dramatically enhance the visitor's experience. These two
projects will take time and money, but the end result will
not only look beautiful, but will last for years to come.
The museum has many friends that help us
accomplish these types of long-term improvements.
Without the support of our service clubs and the City of
Patterson, we would not be able to move forward. For
their participation, we are truly grateful.
This issue of The Gateway is cause for celebration
and a huge "Thank you" to Burta Herger. Burta has spent
years researching and gathering the information that fills
this issue. It was an enormous undertaking, which took
thousands of hours to complete. It was fascinating to read
about the trends, styles and traditions of weddings in
Patterson and their evolution. Undoubtedly you will find
family, friends and perhaps your own name among the
list of marriages.
As I begin my term as President, I find myself
reflecting on the quote above. The Board of the Patterson
Township Historical Society is a resource of people on
whom I will rely heavily for their incredible knowledge
and experience. My hope is to move us forward with the
same passion for our history, while injecting some new
energy and ideas with an eY.e on the future.

First wedding published in the Patterson
Irrigator
Patterson Young People Married, 11/02/1911
Judge Jennings married two young people from Patterson
Saturday morning in his court room. The parties were Victor
Emanuel Slatten, aged 23 years, and Miss Julia Ethel Rouse, aged 16
years. The witnesses to the ceremony were D.G. Kennedy and G.D.
Campbell. Both of the young people are well known on the West
Side, where they have lived for several years past. The mother of the
girl gave her written consent to the marriage of her daughter, as the
girl was under age.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Slatten are former residents of Tulare
county, having only recently come to Patterson. The bride is a
daughter of J. E. Rouse and a sister of J. .M. Rouse and Charles
Rouse. Mr. and Mrs. Slatten will make their home here.
Gilbert· Hill Wedding Sunday 07/05/1913
A very pretty wedding occurred at the home of Mr. and Mrs. 0.
S. Gilbert Sunday, June 29th, when their eldest daughter, Isadora
Mae, was, given in marriage to James Otho Hill. The ceremony took
place at 2 p. m and was performed by Rev. V. F. Haynes of the
Church of the Brethren in a very impressive manner. L.C. McCoy
acted as best man and Miss Pearl Norton was bridesmaid. Besides
the family of the bride those present at the ceremony were Mr. and
Mrs. Hardman of Volta, Mr. and Mrs. Rollie Peters, Rev. W. F.
Haynes and family and Mrs. J. Booth and family. Both the bride and
groom are well known in the community, as they have lived here for
some time. Their many friends marked the occasion by presenting
gifts, many of the articles being very beautiful and valuable.
Of course, there had to be a charivari for the young couple, a
bunch of boys and young men from the town and colony assembling
at the Gilbert home in the evening with guns, tin boilers and other
thihgs with which to make noise. The bridal couple was not at home,
however, they very cleverly giving the crowd the slip and spending
the night in town at the home of Rev. Haynes. After serenading Mr.
Gilbert and his family for some time the boys realized that the bride
and groom were not there, and then went to the Rottie Peters home
some distance away, as they thought their victims had taken refuge
with the Peters family. After creating a racket here for awhile
without success they finally dispersed and went home.
As usual in such affairs, there were reckless persons in the
crowd. One of the young men had a double-barreled shot gun. and
while at the Gilbert home the gun was discharged, shooting a hole
through the gable of the house. Luckily, nobody was hurt, but Mr.
Gilbert says that the reckless shooter is well known to him and that
he expects him to come back and face the music.

Louis Elfers of Newman Married
A news dispatch from San Rafael July 18th says: Driving up to
the office of Police Judge H. de la Montanya in an automobile, a
woman wearing a fortune in diamonds and a wealthy rancher whose
appearance bespoke his fortunate circumstances, demanded to be
married. The man was Louis Elfers, whose big ranch is at Newman.
and the woman was Miss Ella Taafe of Grass Valley. Judge de la
Montanya performed the ceremony and sent them on their speedy
way rejoicing.
It was common practice in the early years of the Patterson
Irrigator to print lists of those applying for wedding licenses.

Marriage Licenses
A marriage license was issued on Dec. 18th by County Clerk
Benson to Hans Andrew Torrison, native of Minnesota, age 31
years, and Miss Christine Blomgren, native of Minnesota, age 23
years, both residents of Patterson, and on the 23d instant license was
issued to Iman C. McCoy 24, and Pearl Norton, 16, both residents of
Patterson.
It is expected that two more Patterson couples will soon be
calling on the marriage license clerk.
Torrison • Blomgren Wedding Saturday
The following article was crowded out of last week's issue:
A very pretty home wedding occurred last Saturday evening
Dec. 17th, when Miss Christine Blomgren was united in maniage to
Mr. Hans Andrew Torrison.
The wedding took place at the home of the bride, Mrs. Andrew
Bloomgren, on Las Palmas Avenue, Rev. George Shurson of the
Norwegian Lutheran Church officiating.
The dining and living rooms were decorated in green and white,
and Japanese lanterns were tastefully arranged amid branches of
eucalyptus and bunches of mistletoe, giving a Spring-like touch to
the rooms. At 8 o'clock the bridal party entered to the strains of the
bridal chorus from Lohengrin played by Miss Emma Mickleson. An
aisle was formed by pink ribbons carried by Odny, Jennie and Nora
Blomgren and little Rhoda Shurson, through which the bridal party
passed to an archway constructed of palm leaves in the center of
which was hung a large bell made of tinsel.
The bride was beautifully costumed in a white albatross dress,
trimmed in white silk lace, and wore a white bridal veil fastened
with a wreath of smilax. She carried a bouquet of white roses and
lilies of the valley.
The bridesmaids wore pink dresses and carried bouquets of
pink carnations. The four ribbon girls were dressed in white with
pink sashes. The groom was in conventional black.
At th~ completion of the ceremony a quartet rendered a song,
after which the bride and groom and the guests sat down to a
wedding supper of four courses.
The bride has a host of friends in the town and colony, and the
wedding gifts she received were many and costly. The groom is a
well known young man and owns a farm on Eucalyptus avenue
where he has just erected a comfortable home. The happy pair left
on the 2gm for Carmel to spend their honeymoon.
Editor's note: Christine's father Andrew 0. Blomgren is listed as
Patterson's first settler.

Miss Emily Rogers Is Bride of Hans Hanson
At a quiet wedding at the Newman Catholic parsonage Sunday
afternoon, Miss Emily Rogers became the bride of Hans C. Hanson.
Only the immediate relatives and friends were present, Mr. and Mrs.
J. Garcia of San Francisco attending the bridal couple. Following
the ceremony the newlyweds left on an auto tour to Southern
California, planning to be absent about two weeks.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Rogers,
pioneer ranchers of this section, and Hanson is the son of N. C.
Hansen and a World War veteran. Both of the contracting parties are
held in high esteem by their many friends · and sincere
congratulations will meet them upon their return.
Campbell is a comparative newcomer here, being interested in
large scale development of new district lands west of town
Elopement to Reno Results in Wedding Monday
Quietly slipping away to Reno Monday, Miss Selaphine
Azevedo, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Azevedo, became the
bride of Joe Foster, Colony dairyman, at a wedding ceremony there.
They will make their home at the groom's ranch on Fruit
Avenue.
Couple Elope to Reno for Saturday Wedding
Miss Mabel Perry, daughter at Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Perry, and
John Mattos Jr.• son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Mattos, staged a runaway
match Saturday when they eloped to Reno and were united in
marriage. Since their return, they are staying with the groom's
parents.

Neils Hansen and Gladys Little

Neils Hansen Is Married at Coast
Slipping quietly away without warning their friends, Miss
Gladys Little of San Jose and Neils Hansen of Patterson were united
in marriage at Santa Cruz on Wednesday of last week.
The wedding was performed by the Rev. Hornaday of the
Methodist church with only the necessary witnesses present.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs Archie E. Little of San
Jose and has made many friends on her visits here, while the groom
is the son of Mrs. Minnie Hansen, corning from a family that have
been long-time residents of this section, and a host of friends will
extend best wishes. They will make their home in Patterson.
Editor's note: Neils was the rural mail delivery person for nearly 30
years for fill of the Patterson country.
Takes Bride at Santa Paula Friday
Miss Gladys Fulton of Santa Paula became the bride of Ward
Campbell of Patterson at a ceremony at that place last Friday, the
couple returning here the first of the week after a brief honeymoon.
They are making their home for the present in the Walter Anderson
cottage.

Richard Hove and Helen Olson
Olson - Hove Nuptials Held Saturday Morning
Miss Helen Beatrice Olson became the bride of Richard J. Hove
at a large home wedding Saturday morning at the home of the
groom's sister, Mrs. Thea Fylling, with Rev. E.W. Lee performing
the ceremony.
The rooms were beautifu lly decorated for the occasion, and an
improvised wedding altar of ferns and white flowers was provided.
Miss Roberta Torrison acc·o mpanied the bride as maid of honor and
Erling Berg was best man. The bride was given in marriage by her
cousin, Hans Torrison. Little Marianne Peterson was flower girl.
The bride wore a blue lace ensemble with hat to match and
carried a bouquet of pink rosebuds. The bridesmaid was attired in
apricot colored taffeta with a bouquet of blue cornflowers and
yellow marguerites. The flower girl was attired in pink and carried a
pastel colored bouquet.

Hove/Olson Wedding
Miss Marie Busengdal played the wedding march and also
accompanied Karl Ingebretsen, who sang "O Perfect. Love"
preceding the ceremony and "I Love You Truly" following the
service.
A reception and luncheon for the sixty guests attending
followed. They were seated at long tables employing pastel shades
of flowers and pink candles as decorations. John Torrison presided
as toastmaster and brief remarks were made by Rev. Lee, Hans
Torrison, C. P. Peterson, Alfred Knutson, Earl Olson, Miss Pearl
Knutson, Pearl Peterson, and the bridal couple. Ingebretsen sang two
numbers and Mrs. Roy Grunstad, gave two Norwegian wedding
songs. Mrs. Fylling was aided by Mrs. Grunstad, Mrs. A.W. Hurtig,
Aileen Busengdal, Evelyn Grunstad, Olga Torrison, and Homer and
Vernon Johnson.
Guests attending from distant points included Mr. and Mrs.
Louis Hove and Miss Edna Langlo of Santa Barbara, Mr. and Mrs.
W. K. Johnson and family of Oakland; Lorraine Torrison of Hollister
and Miss Ruth Long of Hayward.
[n the afternoon, the newlyweds left on their honeymoon trip,
which will take them east to visit the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.
0. Olson, at Fosston, Minnesota, as well as points of interest en
route. They will be absent about a month before returning here to
make their home

Miss Roberta Torrison and James Lawrence Are Wed
The Lutheran Church was the scene of a large wedding Tuesday
evening where, with a double ring ceremony, vows were exchanged
by Miss Roberta Torrison and James Lawrence of Seattle on the
twenty-fifth wedding anniversary of the former's parents. The
marriage was performed by Rev. E.W. Lee.
Preceding the ceremony a medley of old time songs was
rendered on the organ by Miss Charline Elfers. Karl fngebret~en
sang Grieg's "I Love You," and following the ceremony, "O Perfect
Love."
With the first strains of the Lohengrin Wedding March in the
candlelit church Miss Torrison started down the aisle on the arm of
her uncle, John Torrison. Flanking the altar were potted palms and a
large basket of juniper boughs with silvered leaves, while at the altar
were tall candelabra. Smilax was twined about the altar rail and
table.
The bride was attired in a white satin gown which had a high
neck a long flared skirt with train, and leg o'mutton sleeves. She
wore a gold locket, the gift of the groom, and carried a small prayer
book from which hung graceful streamers and lilies of the valley.
The veil, which was held in place with the same flowers was the veil
worn by the bride's mother on her wedding day.
The bride was attended by her sister, Olga Marie, as maid of
honor. She wore a gown of turquoise taffeta and ·a corsage of
gardenias and lilies of the valley. Best man was the bride's cousin
Homer Johnson of Oakland. The mothers of the couple were both
attired in dresses of dark blue silk and wore corsages of gardenias.
Mendelson's Wedding March was played as the recessional, after
which the newlyweds received their friends in the vestibule.
A reception at the Covenant hall followed where covers were
laid for 1SO. The tables were decorated with Christmas berries and
tapers, and at the bride's table was featured a 3 tiered wedding fruit
cake.
Rev. Lee acted as toastmaster for the following program: vocal
solo "Because" by Karl Ingebretsen. Edgar Guest's poem, "Starting
Out" and congratulatory remarks by Mrs. Christine Torrison; piano
medley, Charline Elfers; talks by Miss Louise Lawrence, Mrs. A.W.
Hurtig, Herbert Chase, T.J. Moe and Miss Bernice Johnson, vocal
solos, "Dreaming" and "Ah Sweet Mystery of Life" by Mrs. C.R.
Moore.
As the bridal pair walked slowly down the reception hall Rev.
Lee read "I Like a Window Looking Out Upon the Sea" by Harold
Bell Wright. Upon reaching the door the couple paused and received
the benediction.
Those who assisted in serving at the reception were the Misses
Ardelle Johnson, Doris Knutson, Vivian Hurtig, Adeline Hurtig,
Ethel Gustafson, Meda Halseth, Violet Anderson, Hildur Anderson,
Lois Mortenson, Anne Mortenson, Constance Mathiason, and Vivian
Olson.
At the conclusion of the reception guests adjourned to the
Torrison home to view the many wedding presents.
The newlyweds left Wednesday for Seattle where they will make
their home.
For her going away outfit Mrs. Lawrence wore a dress of black
pebble crepe with a semi fitted coat of the same color which was fur
trimmed. Her accessories were black.
The bride is a graduate of the local schools and the Pacific
Lutheran College at Parkland, Washington. She is the daughter of
Mrs. Christine Torrison.
Lawrence is a graduate of the Long View Schools and attended
San Jose State Teachers College. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
James Lawrence of Long View and is now employed as a machinist
at the Bremerton Navy Yard.
Out of town guests here for the wedding include Messrs and
Mesdames James Lawrence and daughters Louise and Margaret;
W.K. Johnson and daughter, Ardelle, and sons, Homer and Vernon
of Oakland, James Torrison of Oakland; Emil Torrison and sons,
Emil and Donald of Vernalis; Lee Pearson of Wilmington; Tony
Mortenson and daughters Lois Mae and Anne, of Palo Alto; ~isses
Olena Blomgren of Hayward; Gina Belsom and Lorraine Torrison of
Berkeley; and Messrs Hans Olson of White Salmon, Washington;
rver and Albert Blomgren of Hayward and Richard Kolden of Port
Costa.
The War Years Begin

Enlistment Hastens Wedding Plans of Couple
Plans for the marriage of Miss Olga Marie Torrison and Anders
Wickstrom for some time next year were changed suddenly upon
Wickstrum's enlistment into the United States Coast Guard Service
this past week.
Telling their families and a few close friends they left for
Gardnerville, Nevada, la~t Saturday, where they were united in
marriage by the Rev. Paul H. Felton of the Lutheran Church in that
city.
A brief honeymoon was spent in Nevada and in the Bay area.
The groom left Wednesday morning for the Coast Guard Training
Station af Fort Townsend, Washington. Mrs. Wickstrom is
remaining here during his preliminary training period and is
retaining her position at the W.C. Filippini Machine Shop.
Both are well known in Patterson. The bride in the daughter of
Mrs. Christine and the late Hans Torrison and he is the nephew of
Mrs. C.R. Moore with whom he made his home while attending high
school. Both are graduates of Patterson High School. Wickstrum
later attended San Francisco Junior College and was a student at
Cogswell Polytechnic School at the time of his enlistment.

Miss Charline Elfers Weds Service Man in Alabama
Announcement of the marriage of Miss Charline Elfers to
James W. Slone on April the 15th, came as a surprise to her many
Patterson friends this week.
Mrs. Slone flew to Mobile, Alabama, where the ceremony was
performed by the Rev. Dr. Curtis Crane in the Presbyterian Church
of that city.
The bride wore a suit of navy gabardine with white accessories
for her wedding and her flowers were gardenias.
The bride is the daughter of Mrs. W.J. Knutson and was
graduated from the Patterson High School in 1937. She then
attended St. Olaf?s College in Northfield, Minn., and recently has
made her home in San Francisco. The groom is the son of M.W.
Slone of Pittsburgh, Pa. He attended the Pittsburgh Schools and the
University of Pennsylvania. He is now with the United States Air
Corps in foreign service.
Mrs. Slone has been visiting her mother since her return from
Alabama last Thursday.
Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Nelson Bride at Stockton
Miss Maxine Nelson of Stockton daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray
Nelson of Patterson became the bride of Jay Allen Cowan of
Stockton at that city Sunday afternoon in a ceremony performed at
the First Presbyterian Church.
The bride was escorted by her father and was followed down
the aisle by her three sisters, with Miss Norma Nelson as maid of
honor and Mrs. Lois Wagner and Miss Irene Nelson as bridesmaids.
The couple will make their home in Stockton, where the groom
is employed.

Johnson-Phillips Nuptials At Carson City Yesterday
The call to arms had double significance for Miss Florence
Johnson and Richard Phillips this week as plans for a church
wedding had to be thrown overboard and a simple ceremony at
Carson City, Nevada, substituted instead.
The reason was Phillips enlistment in the Army Air Corps and
notification that he must report for duty next Monday.
Consequently a small family party made the journey to the
Nevada capital yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. Merrill Johnson, brother and
sister-in-law of the bride, attended the couple for the ceremony, and
the parents of the contracting parties, Mr. and Mrs. George Johnson
of Patterson and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Phillips of Modesto.
completed the party.
The bride was attired in a suit of soldier blue, with navy
accessories and an orchid corsage, for the ceremony.
A common love for music formed the basis for their college
romance, both being talented musicians and earning high honors in
their college work.
Mrs. Philips is a graduate of the Patterson schools and Modesto
Junior College, earning highest scholastic honors. She was
valedictorian of her class last Spring and also served as
vice-president of the Student Body.
The groom is a graduate of Modesto Junior College and San
Jose State College, majoring there in music, receiving his degree this
Spring also.

Millard Wooley Wed'i Florida Girl
Ensign and Mrs. Millard Wooley spent several days here last
week as the guests of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Millard Wooley.
Ensign Wooley claimed his bride September 27th, whom he
had met while in training in Florida. He is at present stationed in
Long Beach.

Stanley Cox Takes Bride At Sonora Ceremony
Two well-known families of Central California were united
Sunday afternoon as Miss Katherine Rosasco of Sonora and William
Stanley Cox of Westley met at the altar of the Sonora Methodist
Church for a four o'clock ceremony.
Tall baskets of white glads and stocks provided the setting,
flanked by candelabra containing white tapers. Prior to the
ceremony, "At Dawning" and "I Love You Truly'' were played by
the organist.
The bride was escorted to the altar by her father, where the ri~es
were performed by Rev B.W. Pearce of the College of the Pacific.
Only the immediate families and close friends were in attendance.
The bridal gown was of white faille with tight bodice and net
yolk with seed pearl embroidery. The full skirt had a slight traiu.and
a finger-tip veil fell from a halo of seed pearls. She carried a white
prayer book on which were laid three white orchids with streamers
of white satin and bouvardia.
Her sister, Mrs. Jack Dambacher of Sonora, was her only
attendant. She was attired in a gown of pink net with sweetheart
neckline and bouffant skirt, with matching Juliette cap. She carried
a French bouquet of mixed pink, blue and white blossoms.
The bride's mother wore a dove-grey dress with white
accessories and orchid corsage. The groom's mother was attired in a
Navy blue dress with fuchsia trim and white accessories and white
orchid corsage.
Stewart Cox attended his brother as best man and Jack
Dambacher and Wilbur Pooley, cousin of the bride were ushers.
Following the rites, a reception was held at the Sonora Inn,
where a four-tier bride's cake was cut by the couple. The serving
table was decorated with white carnations and white tapers in crystal
holders.
For her going-away costume, Mrs. Cox wore a two-piece grey
suit with small hat of smoke white felt and black patent shoes and
bag. She wore a corsage of three orchids.
A honeymoon tour of several weeks is planned, going into
British Columbia and as far as Banff. On their return they will make
their home on the Cox ranch, where Stanley will engage in farming
with his father and brother.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rosasco of
Sonora and is a graduate of Modesto Junior College and the
University of California. She has been teaching at the Washington
School in Modesto.
The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Cox and is also a
graduate of Modesto Junior College and the University of California,
starring in football at both institutions. He was a member of Zeta Psi
Fraternity at California. Following his studies there, he was sent to
Columbia University for Navy training and commissioned as a P-T
boat skipper, being approximately four years in Navy service. He
completed service as a lieutenant, senior grade.

The couple will honeymoon in Southern California for one week and
will return to Patterson to live on Las Palmas Ave. The bride will
continue as a secretary at the W.C. Filippini Machine Shop and the
bridegroom is engaged in farming.

Weds Naval Officer At Corpus Christi
The chapel at the Navy Base at Corpus Christi, Texas, was the
·· scene of the wedding ceremony which united Miss Mary Ann
Wheeland and Lieut. J.E. Ellzey Friday. Lieut. Charles Clifford,
Naval Chaplain officiated.
The bride wore a suit of turquoise blue with matching hat and
brown accessories and carried a white prayer book with an orchid on
it and a bouquet of white carnations.
Her attendant, Mrs. Weiss, wore a flowered crepe dress with corsage
of gardenias and carnations.
Lt. Com R.S. Collins was best man and Capt. Bill Muller,
U.S.M.C., gave away the bride.
A reception followed at the Robert Driscoll Hotel following
which the couple left for a short honeymoon at San Antonio.
The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Mabel Wheeland of Patterson
and is a graduate of Patterson high school, being employed by a
Modesto bank for two years. The groom is the son of Mrs. Mildred
Schaub of Oakland. He is serving in the regular Navy and is at
present attending aeronautical engineering school at Corpus Christi.

Rovedatti-Trinta Marry in Carmel
Miss Ida Louise Rovedatti, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mario
Rovedatti; and Domingues Trinta, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Trinta,
were united in marriage in a double ring ceremony in Carmel
Sunday afternoon.
The bride wore a spring laced tailored suit with matching hat of
shell beige and brown alligator accessories, an orchid corsage
completed her ensemble.
Matron of honor was Mrs. Manuel Silveria of Pacific Grove,
sister of the bridegroom. She wore a light faille suit and a corsage or'
carnations.
Manuel Silveira was best man.
A reception was held for members of the family at Casa Munras
in Monterey immediately following the ceremony.

Sharon Lee Fialho, Thomas Charles Stubbs United in Double
Ring Ceremony Dec. 19
The Federated Church was the setting December 19 at 8 p.m.
for the marriage of Sharon Lee Fialho and Thomas Charles Stubbs.
Bishop Peterson performed the double ring ceremony.
Mr. and Mrs. John Fialho are the parents of the bride and Mr. and
Mrs. Stubbs, Sr. of Sunnyvale, are the parents of the benedict.
Maid of honor for her sister was . Jo Ellen Fialho and
bridesmaids were Joland Fink, Rita Hass and Kerma Withers of
Canoga Park. All were dressed alike in red velvet dresses designed
with a scoop neckline in front and a deep V in back. The Empire
waistline extended into a full bouffant skirt. Their pill box hats were
of red and their pearl earrings were a gift of the bride. They all
carried white muffs centered with red flowers.
Best man duties were performed by Chuck Bettencourt and
ushers were Johnny McGill, Eddie Richardson and Donal Hicks.
She is a graduate of Patterson High School and attended
Modesto Junior College. She has been employed in. the County
Assessors office in Merced.
Stubbs is also a graduate of Patterson High School and is
stationed with the US Army, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where
they will make their home.

George Klopping, Ruth Haberroth United in Wedding Rites July
20 in Germany
Lt. George Klopping and Ruth Haberroth of Crailshein,
Germany, were united in marriage Saturday, July 20 in a 9:30 a.m.
ceremony.
The religious ceremony was performed at McKee Barracks Post
chapel and followed by a reception at the officer's club. A civil
ceremony was then performed later a dinner was served to family
members and friends.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs Johanu Haberroth of
Cralisheim, Germany, and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Klopping are the
parents of the groom. He is graduate of Patterson High School and
the University of California at Berkeley. He has been stationed with
the army in Germany for the past nineteen months and will return to
the states around the middle of December.
Following a honeymoon in Garmish, which is located on the
border between Germany and Austria, the newlyweds will reside on
the army post.

Henry Wong is Wed In Hong Kong, China
Lee Foon Yung and Henry Wong exchanged nuptial vows
September 12 in a double ring ceremony performed in Hong Kong,
China. A civil service was conducted in the afternoon followed by a
religious ceremony in the evening.
The bride who was given in marriage by her aunt, wore a native
Chinese gown of pure pink silk embroidered with dragons, pink
flowers in her hair and pink accessories. Her ten dollar gold piece on
a gold chain was a gift of the groom and is a tradition of long
standing in that country. Robert Sing of Modesto served as best man.
A dinner for 180 relatives and friends was held in the evening
in Knowloon, China.
The new Mrs. Wong is attending an English speaking school in
Hong Kong and expects to join her bridegroom in Patterson by the
end of the year.
Wong attended local schools and served with the army for two
years during World War II. He was an active member of the
Patterson Volunteer Fire-Department for a number of years before
moving to Modesto and was presented a gold badge when leaving
here. Since his return he has rejoined the department as an auxiliary
member. He is also active in the Lions Club, Scottish Rite and the
Shrine. He is associated with his father Wong Sing.
Carolyn Van Cleave - Anthony Cooper United in Gustine On
May 12
On the evening of May 12, Carolyn Fem Van Cleave became
the bride of Anthony Cooper, in a double ring ceremony at the
Presbyterian Church of Gustine. The Reverend James E. Kenney
officiated.
The parents of the bride are Mr. and Mrs. Ray Van Cleave of
Patterson, Mrs. Juanita Cooper of Hydesville is the mother of the
groom.
The new Mrs. Cooper chose a floor length gown of lace over
satin, and organza over satin for her wedding, with long sleeves of
lace and a round neckline. Her finger-tip-veil fell from a pearl
crown headdress. Carnations surrounding two white orchids made
her bouquet.
Miss Pam Heiney of Modesto served as maid of honor, wearing
a street length dress of mint green taffeta with matching hat. She
carried a bouquet of carnations.
Dennis Van Cleave, brother of the bride, attended his new
brother-in-law as best man. Ushers were Ronnie Van Cleave, also
brother of the bride, and Leslie Atwood of Newman.
A reception in the church social hall was held for
approximately 75 guests immediately following the wedding.
Among those who assisted was Maral Mortenson of Patterson, who
had charge of the guest book.
After a short honeymoon in Pacific Grove, the couple are
making their home in Modesto where Mr. Cooper is employed.
Dianne Peichoto Wed to Louis J. Barletta
Dianne Elaine Peichoto, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Manuel
Peichoto of Patterson, became the bride of Louis Joseph Barletta on
February 27.
The double ring ceremony was held in Sacred Heart Catholic
Church with Rev. Thomas P. Stanton officiating. Judith Anne
Barletta was vocal soloist for the ceremony accompanied by Frank
Faria. The church was decorated with white gladioli and stock.
The bridegroom's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Rocci Barletta of
Orland.
For her wedding Dianne chose a floor length gown of rose point
lace with Basque waistline, long sleeves a full shirt and chapel train.
Her silk illusion elbow length veil was held by a double crown of
aurora borealis and pearl drops.
She carried a bouquet of white roses and Stephanotis centered
with a white orchid.
Barbara Peichoto served her sister as maid of honor.
Bridesmaids were Linda Vierra of Gustine, Judith Barletta of
Patterson, and Barbara Gonzales of San Jose.
They wore floor length gowns of blue nylon organza over
taffeta. Their head pieces were a bow of the same blue material with
a face veil. Their bouquets were of blue and white carnations with
matching ribbons. Each wore a pearl teardrop necklace, a gift of the
bride.
Dianne was given in marriage by her father, Manuel Peichoto.
Larry Barletta of Patterson, a cousin of the bridegroom, was best
man. Guests were seated by Larry Silveira of Patterson, Dennis
Nunes of Orland, and Vernon Peichoto of Newman.
Toni Peichoto of Los Moil nos was flower girl and Gary Garcia
of Patterson was the ring bearer.
For her daughter' s wedding Mrs. Peichoto chose a blue knit •
dress with matching accessories. Her corsage wa<> a white orchid.
The bridegroom's mother chose a while two-piece dress with
beige and green accessories. Her corsage was a green orchid.
Two hundred guests attended the reception which was held in
the Pentecostal Hall in Crows Landing. The hall was decorated in
blue and white and the wedding cake centered the refreshment table.
Dancing followed the reception.
Carol Silveira circulated the guest book while gifts were
arranged by Sandra Weatherford and Kathy Gonzales.
Following their honeymoon the couple will establish their first
home in Patterson.
The new Mrs. Barletta is a senior at Patterson High School. Her
husband is a graduate of Orland Joint Union High School and
recently received his discharge from the U.S. Army. He had been
stationed in Germany.

Connie Farinha Becomes Bride of Jerry Musson
Miss Connie Farinha became the bride of Mr. Jerry Musson
Saturday in Sacred Heart Church before an altar banked in blue
delphinium, white carnations, baby's breath and asparagus fem.
Wrought iron baskets of white gladioli and stock and blue
carnations and delphinium with baby's breath and asparagus fern
enhanced the sacristy, and wrought iron holders garlanded with fern,
white stock, and blue carnations caught into blue bows decorated the
main aisle. The Rev. Charles Cannon celebrated the nuptial mass
and conducted the double-ring ceremony. Organ music was played
by Mrs. Neal and Francis Bettencourt sang.
The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Mary Farinha of 200 North
5th Street. Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Musson of Newman are the parents
of the bridegroom.
Given in marriage by her brother, Mr. Frank Farinha of Pleasant
Grove, the bride wore a full-length gown of organza over taffeta
designed with an oval neckline edged with re-embroidered alencon
lace and a skimmer front accented with lace motifs set with pearls.
Lace motifs also detailed the edge of her Watteau trajn.
Fabric flowers edged in pearls and aurora borealis caught back
her elbow-length veil, and she carried a cascade of white roses and
cymbidium orchids in Stephanotis and baby's breath.
Miss Carol Lopes was maid of honor in blue organza over
taffeta fashioned with sheer sleeves widely ruffled at the wrist, sheer
ruffle at the neckline and a band of deep blue velvet tied in a formal
bow at the front waistline. A matching band of organza petals held
her tulle veil, and her French bouquet with a composition of blue
corn flowers, baby's breath, white daisies, deep orchid carnations,
yellow stasis. rose pink carnations and stephanotis tied in floor
length blue velvet ribbons.
Bridesmaids, costumed like the maid of honor, were the Misses
Martha Sequira and Rosemarie Carvalho of Sacramento and Martha
Farinha of Patterson and Mrs. Anthony Farinha of Pleasant Grove.
Their bouquets, unlike those of the maid of honor, did not contain
Stephanotis.
Jennifer Farinha, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Domingos Farinha,
was cast in the role of flower girl and carried a basket of blossoms
like those of the maid of honor. Michael Musson, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Henry Musson was ring bearer.

Best man was Henry Musson, brother of the bridegroom. John
A. Farinha, brother of the bride, John L. Farinha, Anthony Farinha

A reception and wedding dinner for 450 guests was held in the
F.D.E.S. Hall to which the wedding party drove in highly polished
vintage cars. The bridal table there was garlanded with asparagus
fem which, arranged with blue delphinium, also circled the
five-tiered wedding cake. Silver containers displaying white stock,
baby's breath and blue delphinium graced the table, punctuated with
white candles.
The bride's mother attended in a lace shift of pale blue with
blue accessories. The bridegroom's mother chose a white linen
sheath detailed at the neckline with multi-colored embroidery and
complimented by a multi-color embroidered coat. Her accessories
were white. Both women wore white orchid corsages.
Master of ceremonies at the reception was Mr. Joaquin Farinha
of Pleasant Grove, brother of the bride. The bride's cousin, Miss
Mary Faria, of Patterson and Miss Veronica Carvalho of Bryte
presided at the guest book. Miss Margaret Homen was at the gift
table.
Music for dancing was provided by Hank De Coito.
Departing for a honeymoon in Hawaii, the bride wore a pale
blue knit coat and dress ensemble with grey-blue accessories and a
corsage of white cymbidium orchids, Stephanotis and leather fern.

Laurie Campbell Wed To Robert Hicks
Pew candelabra twined with pink carnations. white
chrysaQthemums and fems let the way to the altar decorated with
pink roses, white carnations, fern and gypsophila when Laurie
Campbell and Robert Hicks exchanged vows recently at the
Federated Church. The candlelight double ring ceremony was
perfonned by Rev. Waldo Hahn and Rev. Clyde Beecher of San
Diego. the bride's uncle. Rev. Beecher officiated when the bride's
parents were married at the same church.
For her special day the bride selected a gown of white chiffon
with attached brush train. Gentle ruffles and rouching were featured
at the high neck, on the yoke and on the bishop sleeves which were
accented with ruffle cuffs. Her free flowing skirt with its rouching
and embroidery fell to a flounce which encircled the gown and train.
She wore a white picture hat of silk illusion and old English
embroidery that secured a floor length detachable veil. The hat was
touched with white roses and baby's breath. She carried an old
fashioned nosegay of white roses, lily of the valley and fem.
Marlene Cardoza was maid of honor. Her long cranberry
polyester skirt was topped with a white long-sleeved chiffon ruffled
bodice. The skirt was accented with a ruffled hem and a
cummerbund at the waist. Her picture hat was cranberry color
accented with pink rosebud trim. She carried a bouquet of pink
rosebuds, baby's breath and fem.
Bridesmaids were Teri Bingham, Gay Allard, Angie Halcon,
Lynne Bettencourt, Julie Johnson and Jody Verschelden. They were
attired the same as the maid of honor.
Bill Hicks performed the best man duties for his brother. Ushers
were Chuck Ferry, Jerry McGuire, Rick Scheuber, Steve Prevostini,
Phil Carlson, Gary Garcia and Don Campbell, the bride's brother.
Mindy Parks was at the organ and Jan Hallstrom was soloist.
Candlelighters were Anne Marie Vizzolini, the bride's cousin, and

Mrs. Campbell witnessed her daughter's wedding in a floor
length pale pink, pleated chiffon gown with cummerbund at the
waist and long flowing sleeves. The groom's mother chose a floor
length gown of green silk polyester with matching jacket accented
with gold accessories. Each carried a single pink rose bud.
Special quests were Mrs. Julia Bettes, the bride's grandmother,
and Mrs. Ouida Messer, grandmother of the groom.
The ceremony, performed before family and close friends, was
followed by a reception for those and other guests at the Sportsman
of Stanislaus clubhouse in Modesto. Chrysanthemums, fem, baby's
breath and candles in the bridal colors were used in the decor. The
buffet table was centered with a heart shaped ice sculpture. The
cake, made by the bride's cousin, Lorene Wilkinson of Sacramento,
featured a ceramic bride and groom and fresh flower nosegay of pink
carnations, white rose buds. baby's breath and fem. The bride's table
was covered by a table cloth made by her paternal grandmother,
Gladys Campbell, and used at the wedding of the bride's parents.
The bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lauren Campbell, is a
graduate of Patterson High School and is locally employed. Her
husband, son of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Hicks, also graduate from
local schools and is now engaged in farming with his father.

John Barbastes Wed In Yuba City Rite
John Barbaste and Nancy Fahy of Yuba City exchanged
wedding vows in a summer ceremony at Saint lsidores Catholic
Church in Yuba City. The altar was accented by a large arrangement
of white snapdragon, gladioli, yellow carnations and porn porns.
Two urns filled with yellow gladiolas, white chrysanthemums and
white stock flanked the altar. Rev Dana Fetz officiated at the
afternoon double ring ritual.
For her special day the bride selected a gown of Dacron
polyester organza fashioned with a fitted bodice, sweetheart neckline
and short fluted cap sleeves. The empire waistline topped a full skirt
and attached train made with two deep ruffles. Venice lace was used
on the bodice and at the hemline. Her floor-length veil had a face
blusher and was also lace trimmed. She carried a nosegay of small
yellow roses, white elegance carnations, Bristol fairy and baby's
breath.
Michelle Fahy was her sister's maid of honor. Her yellow petit
point polyester organza gown was designed with a square ruffled
neckline, full flared skirt with flounced ruffle at the hemline and a
yellow cummerbund. She wore a yellow picture hat and carried a
nosegay of yellow Bellona roses, Bristol fairy and baby's breath.
Bridesmaids Maureen Fahy, the bride's sister, Jeannette Fahy,
cousin of the bride, Yvette Guecamburu, the groom's sister, and
Debbie Whitten were attired in similar fashion.
J. B. Guecamburu served as best man for his brother-in-law.
Ushers were Mike Bidart, Craig Bettencourt, Joaquin Faria, and
David De Lash.
Jane Roberts was at the organ. Altar boys were Jeffrey and
Jerry Fahy, cousins of the bride.
A reception at the Hillcrest Hanger honored the couple after the
ceremony. Karen Lamb was at the guest book while Debbie Haag
and Gail Plaza were at the gift table. Music for dancing was
provided by the band of Francis Bettencourt.
The bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Fahy, graduated
from Yuba City High School and attended Yuba College and
California State University Fresno School of Nursing.
Barbaste, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Barbaste, is a Patterson
High School graduate, attended Modesto Junior College and earned
his BS at California State University Fresno.
Following a honeymoon trip to Lake Tahoe and San Diego, the
newlyweds have established a first home in Rural Patterson where
Barbaste is self-employed in the dairy business and farming.

Kathy Dodd and Ken Herger Wed
Mr. and Mrs. Ken Herger are at home in Patterson following a
honeymoon trip to Hawaii.
Kathy Ann Dodd, daughter of Dale and Pat Dodd, and Ken
Herger, son of Frank and Ruby Herger, were married in a
double-ring ceremony performed Jan. 26 by the Rev. Joseph Dyra in
Sacred Heart Church.
The altar was flanked by two candelabra, and 26 candles
marked church pews down the aisle. Wedding bells adorned the
windows.
The bride was attired in a Queen Anne-style gown with a fitted
bodice embroidered with seed pearls and lace and a sweeping train.
Her full veil was attached to a cap of seed pearls, and she carried a
spray of rust, apricot and baby white roses.
Sandy Nielsen served as her cousin's maid of honor, and
bridesmaids were Tami Rodrick, Laurie Geddes, Donna Borba and
Sabia Adelman. They wore pleated rust chiffon gowns styled with
cap sleeves, and carried nosegays of rust ribbon roses with apricot
baby's breath.
Flower girl was Signa Pedrazzi.
Karl Herger was his brother's best man.
Ushers were Tony Oodd, brother of the bride; Jeff Breasher,
Bill Azevedo, John Marci, Dave Pires, Johnny Matteri, Don
Campbell and Daryl Washburn.

Steve Lorack and Karen Eberwein
Eberwein and Lorack Are Married in Chico
Burgundy and pale pink trimmings embellished the aisles of the
First Christian Church in Chico where Karen Eberwein and Steve
Lorack were married on Aug. 31, in a ceremony officiated by the
Rev. Wendell Pew.
The bride wore a sheer white organza gown over taffeta
skirting. The dress featured a scoop neckline and puffed sleeves,
edged with ruffled chantilly lace, She chose a picture hat covered in
lace and accented with pearls. The headpiece was covered with
fingertip veiling of English illusion tulle and satin bow streamers.
The bridesmaids wore long burgundy gowns with sweetheart
necklines. The groomsmen wore black tuxedos.
Maid of honor was Mary Oakley. an AFS sister of the bride
from Dunedin, New Zealand, Matron of honor was Janice Eberwein
of Patterson, sister-in-law of the bride. Bridesmaids were Kathy
Green of Pittsburg, Calif., Diana Opela. of Modesto, and Janet
Lorack of Sacramento, sister of the groom.
The best man was Tom Nield of Huntington Beach. Groomsmen
were David Carol of ChicG, and brothers of the bride Russ Eberwein
of Sunnyvale and Ken Eberwein of Patterson.
The reception was held at the California Park Pavillion in
Chico. The four-tiered wedding cake was decorated in the pink and
burgundy wedding colors and was made by the bride's aunt. Carole
Southam of Butte City. Mary Limke and Carole Southam, aunts of
the bride, cut and served the cake.
The daughter of Elroy and Betty Eberwein of Patterson, the
bride is a graduate of Patterson High School and Chico State
University. She is a personnel representative with Industrial
Indemnity in San Francisco.

Newlyweds Celebrate Marriage and Parents Note Anniversary
While George and Carol Wong celebrated their 38th wedding
anniversary, their son Steven Wong and Sonya Jacobo were married
Sunday, September 3, in accordance with Chinese rites and customs
at Lam's Paradise Restaurant here.
Posted on the wall was a Chinese couplet wishing that the
couples would be bonded in harmony for centuries and have
prosperity for generations to come. In the center of the couplet is the
sign of double happiness; three statues in the background
representing happiness, wealth and longevity (see accompanying
photo).
Traditionally the bride offers tea to show respect to the parents
and older friends. The newlyweds also must petition their ancestors
in front of the shrine for their marriage and ask for blessings.
Sonya Jacobo is the daughter of Irma E. Jacobo and the late
Raut Jacobo. She is a 1991 graduate of John F. Kennedy High
School in Sacramento. She attended American River Junior College
where she majored in general education. She is employed by ADAC
Health Care Information System in Milpitas as an application
specialist in radiology.
Wong is· a 1986 graduate of Patterson High School. He
graduated from University of California, Sacramento, in 1993 with a
bachelor's degree in electrical/electronic engineering and power
engineering. He is employed by Cypress Semi-Conductor Company
in San Jose as a senior field application engineer sales manager.
After a honeymoon in Europe the couple are at home in
Sacramento.
