District Governor’s Message
Greetings to all Lions of District 14-R,
March has been another active month. The District 14-A/14-R
Convention Committee is hard at work preparing for the first
convention of our soon-to-be-combined district. The Long-Range
Planning Committee continues to finalize those items necessary for
our transition to a single district. Clubs have begun working on their
slate of officers for next year and are preparing to distribute the funds
raised during the year. When making your annual donations, don’t
forget this year’s Governor’s Project – the Campaign for the Canine
Development Center at Leader Dogs for the Blind.
DG Mark Berchem
Our joint District 14-A/14-R Convention will be held at the DoubleTree
by Hilton in Plymouth Meeting, PA on Saturday, April 11th. Our seminars for the morning
concern New Member Orientation, Membership, Club Finance and Administration and Merger,
What do I need to Know?. We will again be holding our Used Eyeglass Collection Contest and
exhibits will be open for viewing during the day. Our luncheon will feature this year’
s guests,
Past International Director Donal Knipp and his wife Lion Betty, from Auxvasse, Missouri. This
year’
s Necrology Service (Memorial Service) will be held to honor those members (of both
districts) who have passed away during the past year. Our seminars for the afternoon
provide additional opportunities for learning and development: a Roundtable Q&A with PID
Donal Knipp, a Lioness Program with Lion Betty Knipp and a Leo Program. Our evening will
start with a Social Hour followed by our Convention Banquet. Our annual Melvin Jones
Fellowship ceremony will be held during the convention banquet, to recognize those Lions
who received a Melvin Jones Fellowship this year. Also, our annual convention basket raffle
will be available throughout the day (winners will be chosen at the convention banquet).
The 2015 PA Lions State Convention will be held from Thursday, May 14th thru Sunday, May
17th at the Lancaster Host Resort and Conference Center in Lancaster, PA. Come enjoy the
fellowship of Lions from throughout the state and meet our special guest, International
President Joe Preston.
The Bucks County Lions 40th Football Classic (All-Star Game) will be held on Friday, May 29th
(rain date Saturday, May 30th) at War Memorial Field (Central Bucks West High School) in
Doylestown, PA. Kickoff will be at 7:30 PM. This year’
s “All-Star” Banquet will be held on
Thursday, May 28th at the German American Sports & Social Club (Vereinigung Erzegebirge
[VE]) in Warminster, PA (130 Davisville Road), to honor the players, coaches (past and
present), and cheerleaders who will be participating in the game. Also a 7:30 start. Come
join our fellow Bucks County Lions and the Buck County “All-Stars” at both the banquet and
the game. More information is forthcoming.
International President Joe Preston’
s eighth challenge in this year’
s theme “Strengthen the
Pride” is to “Strengthen the Pride” THROUGH GIVING. President Joe encourages all of our
clubs to make a contribution to LCIF (Lions Clubs International Foundation), the charitable
arm of our association. LCIF is there to do more than clubs working alone, are capable to do.
Your club’
s contribution to LCIF, combined with donations
from clubs throughout the world, can provide help at
a much larger scale.
Did you “Ask 1” yet?

Mark Berchem

March 24, 2015
Dear Lions, Lionesses and Leos,
I bring you greetings from your Pennsylvania Lions Beacon Lodge as we approach the beginning of the 2015
camping season. I'd like to bring you up-to-date on some new programs and projects that we are working on
and also advise you of important dates coming up.
First, we have added two new camping sessions (Project New Hope) for our wounded Pennsylvania Service Men
and Women and their families. These camping sessions are recreational and intended to allow our wounded
veterans the opportunity to re-connect with their spouse and/or children. There is no cost for the veterans
except for getting to and from the camp. If you know of any Wounded Warriors that may be interested in
attending, there is a downloadable registration application on our web site. The dates for these camping
sessions are July 26-29, 2015 and August 6-9, 2015.
Our Pennsylvania Lions, Lionesses and Leos Appreciation Day is on Sunday, July 20, 2015. Please mark your
calendars. Come see how your donations are used at Beacon Lodge!
Finally, as some of you know, we had to eliminate our miniature golf course in order to install our new
underground water and sanitary sewer lines and relocate our existing sewage pumping station. Last year we
decided to install a new miniature golf course located between the Children's Village playground and the lake.
Work began last year as we cut down 35 sycamore trees, removed their stumps, graded the terrain and installed
a storm drainage system. On March 23rd, our staff finalized the design with our course installer. The contractor
is beginning to fabricate the holes off-site and we hope to install same prior to the beginning of our camping
season.
In an effort to beautify the new course and make it safe and enjoyable to our campers, we have decided to put
landscaping in and install approximately ten (10) benches throughout the course. Originally, we had enough
money for this project but with the cost of added drainage, landscaping, benches, signage, etc., our budget is
being stretched. Therefore, your Board of Directors decided to offer the opportunities to our clubs and their
members to make donations towards this project. We have decided to give the club/member the opportunity
to purchase one of the new benches for a $1,000.00 donation. We will also be offering clubs/members the
opportunity to help by sponsoring one of the 9 new holes. This can be done with a $2,000.00 donation. Both
the benches and the holes will be fitted with the proper donor's recognition plate or sign. Remember, these
donations are above and beyond our club's regular donation as we do not want to take away from our General
Fund. Your donations can be given over a two year period.
As always, we thank you for all of your support throughout the years and any support you can give us towards
the miniature golf course would be greatly appreciated.
Yours in Lionism,
Lion Brian B. McCarl, PCC

The Reading Action Program was launched in fiscal year 2012-2013 with a mission to increase reading and
literacy rates around the world. Every Lions club is encouraged to organize service projects and activities that
underscore the importance of reading and address specific needs related to illiteracy within their own
communities.
In October 2014, the International Board of Directors established the position of District Reading Action Program
(RAP) Chairperson. The RAP chairperson contributes to the success of the district through program promotion
and awareness, activity development and collaboration with stakeholders in the community.
The district governor shall appoint a qualified Lion to serve as the RAP chairperson for at least a one-year term of
office, commencing July 1 and ending June 30. The district governor is encouraged to consider selecting a
qualified Lion who may wish to serve for longer than one year, for the purpose of building a more solid and
sustainable program for multiple years. The Lion appointed shall be knowledgeable about the importance of
education and literacy to overcome poverty, disease and other social issues. The district RAP chairperson should
be someone who can bring new energy, inspire fresh ideas, foster community partnerships, and be actively
involved with literacy initiatives and projects. He or she shall possess outstanding leadership, motivational skills
and be a Lion in good standing.
Responsibilities of District RAP Chairperson:

• Work with local partners, educators, technology experts, libraries, government officials, schools for
children and adults with disabilities, hearing care providers, vision care providers, and other community
agencies and organizations to determine community needs and provide appropriate services.
Arrange seminars and workshops for club officers or club RAP chairpersons…
• Invite educators, potential partners, technology experts and professional representatives from other
agencies and stakeholders to provide relevant literacy information and help motivate clubs to participate.
• Discuss RAP projects that can improve literacy rates among children, youth and adults.
Solicit feedback…
• Encourage clubs to conduct community needs assessments.
• Find out how the district can further support clubs in planning RAP projects for children and adults.
