From the Desk of our
President ...
Don't you just love fall weather? I got so busy washing my
"Sunny" on Saturday morning
and admiring how great it looks
when clean that I forgot about
Cars & Coffee, which should
have been where I was going
with a clean car. Some of you
know I have a new job just
about 5 minutes from our
Porsche dealership so drove
"Sunny" to work a couple days
my first week. I spotted a nice
side parking lot beside an
electrical tower (should have
been a clue) where I could park
without anyone parking close by. So far, so good until Friday rolled
around and I came out from work
and had lots of "droppings" from
front to rear of my car. Only then
did I notice those power lines
running across the side parking
lot. I guess the birds celebrate
Friday's just like we do. Live and
learn.
Please join us on October 9 at
the Gerst Haus for our next club
meeting, and on October 13 for
our next outing to Cherokee
Steak House for dinner and then

to Watertown for a drive-in movie. Should be fun! I will be at Gulf
Shores that week-end but will be
thinking of you. Petit Lemans is
also coming up on Oct. 20th at
Road Atlanta if you can make it. That is always a fun week-end
and hopefully Porsche's will rule.
We will be having our annual
election of officers soon so if you
are interested in a spot on our
board, please contact Kent
Kersten and let him know. The
top 4 spots are elected, and the
remainder are appointed by the

Ultimate Porsche D$ving Expe$ence
By E$c Berg
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing back in
April when Steve Matthews, Porsche of
Nashville, told me that I was soon to be invited
to attend the Ultimate Porsche Driving
Experience at the Barber Motorsports Park in
Birmingham in August. More astonishing was
the news that Mr. Robert Hartman, the General
Manager at JPA of Nashville, was sending me.
Unimaginable to me at the time was that I was to
drive, not my own Porsche, but the Porsche
Sport Driving School vehicles, several of them!
customers from many Porsche dealers
throughout this part of the South. We were
fed a catered breakfast before we were
assigned to driving groups. I started on
the track playing follow the leader behind
a race driver in a lead car. Four cars
followed: a Panamera GTS, Cayman R, a
911 and a Boxster, and there were four
such groups of leader followed by four
student cars, each with two students. Each
group drove four laps behind the leader,
trying to stay in the leader’s tracks. We
pitted and the two students swapped
driving duties. After four more laps we pitted,
and everyone moved to the car behind until all
eight students in all four groups (32 students in
all) had driven all four models.
I could barely wait for the August date to come,
so meantime I temporized by driving HPDEs at
Little Talladega and at the newest racetrack in
North America, the Atlanta Motorsports Park. I
even auto-crossed my Panamera 4S four times.
Finally the day arrived. I drove to Birmingham
on Friday, staying at the Ross Bridge Golf
Resort & Spa, one of the Robert Trent Jones
courses. Saturday morning was an exodus of all
manner of Porsches from the hotel parking lot
(and valet parking.) From the time we signed in
at the gate, my pulse quickened. There were

OCTOBER 2012
The last event of the day involved “hot laps”
driven by race drivers with us in the passenger
seats. I might be a low-experience driver, but
I’m no stranger to track driving. Yet these race
drivers frightened me. It’s amazing how much
faster they lap the course than we mere
humans!
Then we rotated through several more stations
while new students got track time. We drove the
Cayenne GTS off road, through a narrow forest
trail, up and down steep grades and through
deep water. We had lane change and slalom
practice. And we learned about the Porsche
Stability Management (PSM) system by a
practical exercise on the skid pad. A parking lot
painted with sealant and irrigated with golf
course sprinklers was as slick as black ice as
we drove figure 8s around the two skid pad
circles with the PSM disengaged. With PSM
engaged, we could still understeer, but all
oversteer was removed and our forward speed
improved dramatically. Finally, we listened to
one of the Porsche factory drivers describe GT3
Cup Racing in front of one of his cars.
If Mr. Hartman’s purpose was to fan the fires of
Porsche enthusiasm, he succeeded. I will return
to Barber to take one or more of the Porsche
Driving School’s courses. Back at work the next
week, I succeeded in getting my colleagues
who own Porsches to commit to future track and
autocross events.

Beginning with this newsletter, the photos of
various club events (drives, concourse
events, tech sessions, etc.) will be linked to
the photo album for each event (when
available). The photo albums are part of
our website, and only a small sampling of
the photos of each event will fit in the
newsletter articles. It is our hope that this
will allow for greater enjoyment, as you will
simply have to click on any one of the
photos of the event that is in the newsletter

Improving Y%r D$ving Skills Pa( II
By Rick Arnemann
This is a continuation of the August article.
This month I'll discuss pedals, gauges, and
steering.
The next driving skill I'll focus on is the car's
controls. You have many controls to
concentrate on -- gauges, shifter, steering
wheel, clutch, brake, and gas pedals. None
of these should be thought of as an on/off
switch. One of the tricks to being fast is
being smooth. Everything you do should be
fluid. Press on the gas, don't jam the pedal
down. Engage the shifter with a light touch,
don't slam it into gear. Turn the steering
wheel in a smooth motion, don't jerk it
around. This isn't to say you need to take
these actions slowly, just smoothly. Use the
car's controls with finesse, not brut force.
Your car has several gauges, but there are
only four that are relevant to driving at
speed -- the tachometer, oil pressure and oil
temp gauges, and the water temp gauges.
Three of these gauges monitor the health of
your motor. The oil pressure and oil temp
gauges, and if your car is water cooled, the
water temp gauge. If the oil pressure
drops, it can indicate damage to the motor.
This could be any number of issues
including a blown gasket causing an oil
leak, a plugged filter, or something much
more catastrophic. A water temp gauge
that is showing the motor is hot can indicate
a water leak, stuck thermostat, faulty water
pump, and the list goes on. The tachometer
indicates when you have reached the end of
the maximum safe engine RPM and that it's
time to shift. The outside temp gauge really
!
doesn't do anything to improve or monitor
your driving performance.
When applying the brakes, engage the
pedal with a smooth, steadily increasing
pressure, again, not slowly but smoothly.
Squeeze the pedal down and ease off of it.
This will help maintain the car's balance.
As with the brakes, squeeze on and ease off
the gas pedal. Slamming on the gas and
jumping off the pedal will unsettle the car.
This in turn reduces traction and slows the
car. Being smooth with the throttle will help
maintain the car's balance, traction and
improve performance. If you find that you
have to back out of the throttle after entering
a corner, you are carrying to much speed
coming into the turn. By squeezing on the
power you will better control your exit
speed. One note of caution here, a 911
does not respond well to over exuberance
when entering a turn, and if you carry to
much speed and you are committed to the
corner, you don't have the luxury of backing
out of the throttle. You have to drive through
the corner leaving the throttle engaged;
good luck with that. If you are on the track,
you should have your right foot engaged at
all times either braking or on the gas, even if
it is just a light touch. You should never
coast.

With the steering wheel you should have a
firm, but relaxed grip. Hold the wheel at 9
and 3 o'clock. I like placing my thumbs
over the steering wheel spokes, but this is
just my personal preference. By always
holding the wheel in the same place you
will, over time, develop an understanding
of where the steering wheel is at all times.
This will come in handy (no pun intended)
when you are in a turn and the car starts to
spin. You will always know where straight
is on the wheel.
When turning into a corner, unwind the
wheel as soon as possible. The idea is to
use all of the road. When you steer
smoothly into and out of corners, keep the
front wheels as straight as is feasible and
the car will remain more balanced. The
consequence of straightening out corners
and being smooth with the wheel is that you
will be faster out of the turns.

918 Sets at the Nürburgring
In test runs on the Nürburgring
Nordschleife, the Porsche 918 Spyder
prototype achieved a best time of just 7
minutes and 14 seconds around the 12.8
mile track. The plug-in hybrid super car has
surpassed expectations and proven its
dynamic driving potential nearly one year
before the start of series production.
"With the time of 7:14 minutes, the 918
Spyder prototype is already proving to be a
fully sustainable concept after just a few
months on the road,” said Dr. Frank Walliser,
head of the 918 Spyder project.
The lap time of the Porsche 918 Spyder
prototype is one of the best ever recorded
for a street-legal vehicle with standard tires.
It is particularly impressive as it was
achieved from a standing start. The 795horsepower plug-in hybrid super sports car
was equipped with production-intent
Michelin street tires and the optional
"Weissach" feature package, which includes
measures to improve driving dynamics.

Good Vibrations
Upgra)ng A Porsche S%nd Sy*em
By Ken Maurer
We all love our Porsches -- if we didn’t, we
probably wouldn’t own one, and we
definitely wouldn’t be part of this wonderful
Porsche club. Whether it’s the feel of the
car in the corners, the sound of the engine
as we approach redline, or the look of the
car that keeps us glancing over our
shoulder as we walk into our local
MegaLowMart, we each have something we
like best about our Porsche. Sadly,
however, in most modern Porsches, the
factory stereo system isn’t likely to be one of
those items that engenders such feelings of
endearment.
My own recognition of the downsides of the
factory stereo came not long after I
purchased my Cayman a couple of years
back. At first, I tried to talk myself around
the issue. After all, I didn’t buy the car for
the stereo, and the primordial scream of that
flat six right behind me was better than any
guitar solo by any musician this side of Jimi
Hendrix. In the back of my mind, however, I
knew the stock, plain-Jane stereo in my
truck sounded noticeably better, and I don’t
consider my ears to be all that sensitive to
such things. That, combined with the recent
refusal of my CDR-24 to play certain CDs, or
to skip periodically -- not to mention the
complete lack of iPod connectivity,
BlueTooth, Nav etc., finally led me to the
point of stereo replacement.
With that in mind, I recently found myself
contacting an audio shop in California that
!
specializes in replacing sound systems in
Porsches (and they’re a member of PCA to
boot). In the picture, you can see what to
expect should you do the same ...
Unfortunately with any modern Porsche
since about 2005 or so, if you want to
replace the head unit, you have to replace
the amplifier as well, due to the use of a
fiberoptic connection between the two. This
isn’t all bad though, since the factory amp
tends to be a weak link in the system.
Initially, I was going to attempt the install
myself, as the kit came with everything that
is needed; however, as there will be
substantial rewiring involved, I’ve decided to
have it done professionally. In a future
edition, I’ll give my impressions of the new
system and the quality of the install. My
hope is it will be helpful for those in the
same boat I was with the factory stereo.

Porsches to Para)se
By Dan Ma(in
Who knew Paradise was only an hour
away? Joe and Deb Questel did. They led
a tour of 11 Porsches with 18 passengers
to "Paradise Point" in Scottsville, Kentucky
on Saturday, September 15th. The day
started out with overcast skies but wouldn't
you know it? Our 55 mile drive from
Lebanon to Scottsville was met with
nothing but sunny skies once at our
destination. Paradise Point lived up to
expectations. A fun stop with an antique
gift shop and great food. There wasn't a
dish that drew anything less than rave
reviews. Breakfast selections included two
types of quiche, hash brown casserole,
cowboy casserole and french toast. Hebrew
National dogs for lunch and bread pudding
for dessert. If you've never been there you
have two weekends to try it out before they
!
close for the winter. Great stuff but enough
about the food and shopping. There was a
great mix of Porsches on this ride as well. There were Boxsters, 911s spanning over 30
years, 944s and a brand new Cayman R
driven by proud owner Rick Jannett. Lots
of car talk and tire kicking. A fun day that
everyone enjoyed. This drive was so
much fun we were all talking about Joe's
tour on October 13 to the Cherokee Steak
House on Old Hickory Lake for dinner
followed by a drive to Watertown to take in
a drive-in movie. We can't wait! Thanks to
Joe and Deb Questel for planning and
leading us to Paradise! On to Watertown!

step toward progress in Middle Tennessee.
The current facility at 2350 Franklin Road
Nashville houses Audi Nashville, Jaguar
Nashville and Porsche of Nashville. The
growth of all 3 brands in the past couple of
years has made it necessary to expand the
facilities to better serve the current and future
customer base.
All 3 stores are owned by the publicly held

industry-leading automotive retailer
committed to providing our customers with
an outstanding automotive experience that is
delivered with professionalism, integrity and
enthusiasm.
Background INFO: On March 5th the City of
Brentwood planning committee gave the go
on plans to build both a Porsche and an Audi
dealership in Brentwood’s Mallory Park near
Cool Springs. Sonic Automotive Group of
Charlotte North Carolina purchased lot 7
(1576 Mallory Lane) and lot 14 (1580 Mallory
Lane) so they could simultaneously build
both facilities. Lot 7 is the 2.2 acre lot facing
the interstate. Lot 14 is a 6.41 acre lot facing
the interstate immediately north of lot 7. The
plan is to build a 9,178 square foot building
for Porsche and a 32,010 square foot
building for Audi. Although there is still a lot
of planning and work to be done, the plan is
to begin building by midsummer and
complete the project by around this time next
year. PAGE 12
